To use a coin-op car wash efficiently, check the bay’s instructions and selector labels before paying, then work through the available settings in order: pre-soak, tire cleaner if offered, high-pressure soap, an optional clean foam brush, rinse, optional wax, and spot-free rinse if available. Keep the wand aimed away from your body, use tire cleaner only on tires, and skip a shared brush that looks dirty.
Before you start the timer
Pull fully into the bay and read its posted instructions before inserting coins or starting a card payment. Wash menus, payment methods, billing increments, and available options vary by facility. Locate the selector and identify which setting is active before turning it on. If you plan to dry the car yourself, set a clean microfiber towel within reach so you are not searching for supplies while time is running. Follow the bay’s wash sequence
Use the posted directions if they differ from this common sequence. Equipment menus are not standardized, and not every bay offers every step. The sequence below follows the operating order in a Coleman Hanna manual and examples of operator instructions.

- Pre-soak: Select pre-soak and apply it across the vehicle as the bay directs. The Coleman Hanna operating manual starts its procedure with pre-soak: Coleman Hanna self-serve operation manual.
- Tire cleaner, if available: Apply it to the tires only, keeping it off painted panels. Not every wash offers this setting; Brooklin Coin Car Wash explicitly warns against spraying tire cleaner on painted surfaces: Brooklin Coin Car Wash instructions.
- High-pressure soap: Select the soap setting and cover the vehicle according to the bay’s directions. Keep control of the wand and spray toward the vehicle, away from your body.
- Foam brush, optional: Inspect the shared brush head before it touches the car. Rinse it first and use gentle pressure. If it has visible grit or dirt, skip it; dragging contamination across paint can scratch it. Both the wash guide and Brooklin’s instructions advise checking or rinsing the brush before use (wash guide; Brooklin Coin Car Wash).
- Rinse: Rinse off the soap thoroughly. One operator recommends rinsing from top to bottom, which helps move loosened residue down and away from areas already rinsed (Brooklin Coin Car Wash instructions).
- Wax or protectant, optional: Use this setting only if the bay offers it and you want that finish. Equipment menus can include wax, but it is not a universal feature (Coleman Hanna self-service equipment).
- Spot-free rinse, if offered: Use it as the final rinse. It is intended to reduce water spotting, but results depend on the facility’s system and conditions.
Use the wand and shared equipment safely
Hold the trigger gun firmly before starting and point the stream toward the vehicle, never toward yourself. The Coleman Hanna manual states: “Always direct the stream of spray away from your body toward the vehicle” (operating manual). Follow the bay’s instructions for the wand and each selector setting.
- Keep tire cleaner on tires; avoid painted surfaces.
- Check and rinse the shared brush before use; skip it if it appears dirty.
- Do not assume a function, pressure, payment option, or billing interval will match another location.
Make paid time count
The simplest way to avoid wasting time is to decide your sequence before you start, identify the selector positions, and have any personal supplies ready. Use only the optional steps that suit the car and the finish you want. Payment and timing are location-specific: there is no universal price or duration for a coin-op wash, and a card-based count-up system works differently from coin-timed increments (Autobell wash information).

Once the final rinse is complete, move out of the timed bay before hand-drying if the facility’s layout allows. Drying with a clean microfiber towel is optional; it is a practical finishing step rather than a required wash setting (self-serve wash guide).
