Crank only for the time allowed by your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If the car does not start after a limited number of attempts, stop trying to preserve the battery and starter, identify the symptom, and decide whether you need a battery test, jump-start, block heater, or roadside assistance.
The instructions below are general guidance for modern vehicles. Your owner’s manual for the exact year, engine, transmission, and model overrides generic advice, especially for maximum cranking time, push-button starting, diesel engines, hybrids, EVs, battery connections, and flooded-engine recovery.
First: make the car safe to start
Cold weather is not a reason to skip the safety check. Snow, ice, poor visibility, a blocked exhaust, or an enclosed parking space can make a routine start dangerous.

- Get the vehicle outdoors. If it is in an attached or enclosed garage, do not start it there. If it can be moved outside safely while switched off, do that first. If it cannot be moved safely, contact roadside assistance rather than taking the risk.
- Clear the tailpipe completely. Remove snow and ice from the exhaust outlet before the engine runs. A blocked tailpipe can force carbon monoxide into the passenger compartment. The CDC specifically warns drivers to clear snow from tailpipes.
- Clear all windows and mirrors. Scrape the windshield, side windows, rear window, and mirrors until you have full visibility. Do not drive with only a small opening scraped in the windshield.
- Brush snow and ice from the roof, hood, lights, and trunk. Snow left on the roof can slide over the windshield during braking or blow onto another driver. Clear headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and the hood as well.
- Check that the doors, hood, and fuel door are usable. Do not yank a frozen handle or force a frozen hood. Use a suitable automotive de-icer and follow the vehicle’s instructions. Never use a flame near the vehicle.
- Check your own condition. Shoveling and scraping in severe cold can cause overexertion or frostbite. If you are stranded, becoming dangerously cold, or standing in traffic, get to a safe place and call for assistance.
Use a scraper or automotive de-icer rather than boiling or very hot water. Sudden temperature change can crack glass, and water can refreeze around door seals and wipers. The CDC’s winter-storm guidance also emphasizes keeping exhaust outlets clear and maintaining visibility.
The garage warning is not optional
An open garage door does not make it safe to run an engine inside. Exhaust can accumulate quickly in an attached or enclosed garage and may enter the home. Do not use remote start, idle the car while scraping it, or run it briefly “just to warm it up” inside the garage. If the vehicle has already been running indoors, leave the area immediately; if anyone has symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, or confusion, get into fresh air and call emergency services.
How to start a modern gasoline car
Modern gasoline engines use electronic fuel injection and engine controls to adjust the cold-start mixture. In normal circumstances, you do not need to pump the gas pedal. Pumping it is generally unnecessary and can flood some vehicles. A Toyota owner’s manual example and a Ford owner’s manual example both illustrate starting without treating the accelerator as a manual choke.
Before turning the key or pressing Start
- Sit in the driver’s seat and make sure the key or key fob is present.
- Set the parking brake.
- For an automatic transmission, select Park. Some vehicles permit starting in Neutral, but use the position specified in the manual.
- For a manual transmission, select Neutral and press the clutch pedal fully to the floor. Keep it depressed while starting.
- Switch off unnecessary electrical loads, including headlights if they are not needed, the radio, heated seats, rear defroster, and blower fan. Do not compromise visibility or safety; use the defroster when needed to clear the glass.
- Keep your foot off the accelerator unless your owner’s manual gives a specific procedure for a flooded engine.
Key ignition
- Insert the key.
- Confirm Park or Neutral, with the brake or clutch depressed as required.
- Turn the key to START.
- Release the key as soon as the engine starts. It should return to the ON position automatically.
If the engine does not start, return the key to the normal position and wait before trying again. Do not keep the starter engaged continuously. The allowed cranking time and rest interval vary by vehicle.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Push-button ignition
- Place the key fob inside the vehicle or in the location specified by the manual.
- Confirm that the transmission is in Park. For a manual vehicle, follow the required clutch procedure.
- Press the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the engine-start button once.
- Do not hold the button or press the accelerator unless the owner’s manual specifically directs you to do so.
If the key-fob battery is weak, the vehicle may have a designated backup detection location. That location differs by model; look it up before an emergency. A push-button system may also crank automatically for a programmed period, so do not repeatedly press the button while it is already trying to start.
How long should you crank?
There is no universal cold-weather cranking limit. Manufacturer examples show why the manual matters: a Subaru Legacy manual example gives a 10-second limit, a Ford Bronco manual example allows cranking for up to 15 seconds, and the 2025 Lexus NX manual describes an automatic system that may crank for up to 30 seconds.
Those figures are examples, not a rule for every car. Follow the manual for your exact vehicle. If the first attempt was brief and the battery still operates the dashboard strongly, one further attempt may be reasonable after the specified pause. Repeated attempts can drain a marginal battery and overheat the starter.
What to do after the engine starts
Do not race the engine or hold the accelerator down to “warm it up.” Let it run briefly while you confirm that it is idling smoothly, check for warning lights or unusual noises, and clear the windshield and other windows. If an oil-pressure warning remains illuminated, there is smoke, or the engine sounds abnormal, switch it off and seek service.

Modern vehicles generally do not need a universal 10-, 15-, or 30-minute stationary warm-up. Prolonged idling wastes fuel and can increase wear. The EPA’s fuel-economy guidance says modern engines generally do not benefit from long warm-ups; its idle-reduction guidance also explains why unnecessary idling is undesirable. Your manual may give different instructions for an older vehicle, a diesel, exceptionally low temperatures, a turbocharged engine, or a special emissions system.
If the car does not start: diagnose the symptom
“It won’t start” can mean two different things. A no-crank problem means the starter does not turn the engine. A crank-but-no-start problem means the engine turns at normal speed but does not fire. Cold weather often exposes a weak battery, but not every no-start is a battery problem.
| What happens | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No lights and no sound | Severely discharged battery, loose or disconnected cable, key/fob problem, blown fuse, or another electrical fault | Check the manual and inspect the battery connections only if safe and accessible. If you are unsure, call roadside assistance. |
| Rapid repeated clicking | Insufficient battery power or a poor battery connection is likely | Stop repeated attempts. Arrange a battery test or use a jump-start only if the battery is safe and the manual permits it. |
| One solid click with bright lights | A starter motor or starter-control fault is possible | Do not keep cranking. Have the starting system diagnosed. |
| Engine turns slowly | Weak battery, heavy or incorrect oil, poor connection, or a starter problem | Stop after limited attempts. Test or charge the battery and have the oil and starting circuit checked. |
| Engine cranks at normal speed but does not fire | Fuel delivery, ignition, immobilizer, sensor, or engine-management problem may be involved | Do not assume a jump-start will fix it. Arrange service after the permitted attempts. |
| Engine starts and immediately dies | Fuel delivery, immobilizer, charging-system, or cold-weather fuel problem may be involved | Stop repeated attempts and seek diagnosis. |
AAA identifies rapid clicking as a common sign of insufficient battery power and notes that a single click can point toward the starter. AAA also warns that an engine that cranks but does not start can have causes other than the battery.
When to try once more—and when to stop
A second attempt may be reasonable only when the first attempt was brief, the engine was turning normally, the battery still powers the dashboard strongly, there is no sign of battery damage, and the manual allows another attempt. Wait for the manual’s interval, commonly around 10–15 seconds, rather than immediately turning the key again.
Stop immediately and call for help if the battery becomes noticeably weaker, the starter clicks repeatedly, the battery case is swollen, cracked, leaking, or frozen, or you smell fuel, burning wiring, or overheated components. Stop if you hear unusual mechanical noise, see smoke, the car is in an unsafe location, or you are becoming dangerously cold.
Can you jump-start a car in freezing weather?
Sometimes, but a jump-start is a carefully qualified fallback—not a cure. Read the owner’s manual first, especially if the vehicle has a battery in the trunk, remote jump points, an automatic stop-start system, multiple batteries, a hybrid system, or an EV. Use roadside assistance if you are not confident identifying the terminals or following the procedure.
Typical 12-volt jump-start sequence
Exact connection points vary, so the manual takes precedence. For a conventional 12-volt vehicle, the typical sequence is:
- Park the donor vehicle close enough for the cables to reach, but keep the vehicles from touching. Switch both vehicles off before connecting the cables.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal or approved positive jump point on the disabled vehicle.
- Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal or approved positive jump point on the donor vehicle.
- Connect the black clamp to the donor vehicle’s negative terminal.
- Connect the final black clamp to a clean, approved unpainted metal ground point on the disabled vehicle, away from the battery and moving parts. This keeps the final spark away from potentially vented battery gas.
- Keep cables clear of belts, fans, pulleys, and hot components. Start the donor vehicle.
- Attempt to start the disabled vehicle according to its manual. Do not hold the starter indefinitely.
- When both vehicles are safely switched off if the manual requires it, disconnect the cables in the reverse order: black from the disabled vehicle’s ground, black from the donor negative, red from the donor positive, and red from the disabled positive.
AAA’s jump-start instructions also recommend using a clean metal ground point on the disabled vehicle for the final negative connection. Do not guess if the vehicle has special terminals or the manual specifies another sequence.

A jump-start supplies temporary starting power. It does not prove that the battery, alternator, or charging system is healthy. After the car starts, have the battery and charging system tested. If the battery is repeatedly discharged, the underlying problem may be a worn battery, charging fault, parasitic drain, loose connection, or repeated short trips.
Why cold weather makes starting harder
Cold starts combine several disadvantages:
- A 12-volt battery can deliver less current in low temperatures, while a cold engine requires more effort to turn.
- Engine oil becomes more resistant to flow as its temperature falls.
- Diesel fuel can become harder to filter or ignite in extreme cold.
- Tire pressure falls as air temperature drops.
- Hybrid and EV batteries temporarily provide less available energy, while cabin and battery heating consume more energy.
NHTSA explains that gasoline and diesel engines require more battery power in cold weather and that cold temperatures can reduce hybrid and EV range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCCA is not the same as battery capacity
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is a battery manufacturer’s rating for the current a new, fully charged battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F / −18°C while maintaining the required voltage. It describes starting performance under a defined test; it does not tell you how long the battery can power lights and accessories.
Battery output depends on its design, age, state of charge, temperature, and previous damage. Interstate gives approximate estimates of about 35% less strength at 32°F and up to 60% less at 0°F, but those are manufacturer estimates rather than a universal percentage for every battery. A weak battery may work on a mild day and fail during the first severe freeze.
How to use a block heater
A block or coolant heater warms part of the engine or cooling system before startup. It can reduce cold-start difficulty and shorten warm-up time, but it cannot compensate for a weak battery, incorrect oil, poor maintenance, or a fuel problem.
Do not use one universal temperature or duration. Examples from manufacturer manuals differ:
Recommended Free Tools
- A Chevrolet manual example recommends engine-heater use at or below 0°F / −18°C and plugging in for at least four hours.
- A Nissan manual example recommends use at or below 20°F / −7°C and approximately two to four hours of connection.
Those are examples for particular vehicles and heater systems, not general rules. Check the manual for the temperature threshold, connection procedure, cord-routing instructions, and whether an extension cord is permitted. Use a grounded three-wire outlet, inspect the cord for damage, protect the connection from weather as directed, and never place a household space heater under the hood. The Chevrolet owner’s manual example and Nissan manual example show why block-heater instructions must be model-specific.
Diesel cars need a different cold-start routine
Do not treat a diesel like a gasoline engine. In a typical modern diesel:
- Turn the ignition to ON/RUN without cranking.
- Watch for the glow-plug or Wait to Start indicator.
- Wait until the indicator goes out, then crank without pressing the accelerator unless the manual directs otherwise.
- Use the manufacturer-specified cold-weather oil and diesel fuel. In severe conditions, use an engine or coolant heater if the manufacturer recommends it.
Diesel fuel can gel or a water-filled fuel filter or separator can freeze, preventing fuel flow. Use regional winter-grade fuel and only manufacturer-approved fuel treatment where applicable. Do not assume that every diesel needs an additive.

Do not spray ether or pour gasoline into a diesel intake unless the exact manufacturer procedure explicitly permits a starting aid. Many modern diesel manuals prohibit starting aids because of fire, pre-ignition, or engine-damage risks. Chevrolet’s Duramax guidance says to wait for the indicator and warns against gasoline or ether in the air intake. Ford’s Power Stroke guidance discusses approved cold-weather fuel treatment, block-heater use, and driving rather than prolonged idling after startup.
Hybrid and electric vehicles
Hybrid vehicles
A hybrid may not start its gasoline engine immediately—or may start it and then shut it off—because the vehicle controls the engine automatically. Follow the vehicle’s normal Ready-mode procedure. Do not assume the car is ready merely because it is silent; look for the Ready indicator and follow the manual.
Battery-electric vehicles
An EV normally does not crank an engine. Press the brake and use the vehicle’s start control as specified until the vehicle indicates that it is in Ready mode. In cold weather:
- Precondition the cabin and battery while connected to the charger when the vehicle supports that function.
- Leave the vehicle plugged in when practical and maintain enough charge for the trip and possible delays.
- Expect that range may fall and charging may be slower.
- Regenerative braking, acceleration, and available power may be temporarily limited until the battery warms.
- Drive more conservatively and allow extra energy for cabin heat, traffic, detours, and weather.
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends preconditioning an EV while it is still charging. Tesla’s cold-weather guidance documents temporary limitations on energy, regenerative braking, acceleration, and charging when the battery is cold. There is no universal EV range-loss percentage; results vary with the vehicle, battery temperature, speed, heating demand, terrain, tires, and weather.
An EV can still have a dead 12-volt battery even when its high-voltage traction battery has charge. Use only the manufacturer’s designated 12-volt jump points and procedure. Never attempt to jump, open, or service the high-voltage battery yourself.

Preventing cold-weather starting problems
Test the battery before the severe cold arrives
- Have the battery and charging system tested before the first severe cold snap, especially if starting has become slower.
- Inspect for loose, dirty, or corroded connections. Have unsafe or heavily corroded connections repaired rather than guessing.
- Replace the battery based on its test result and condition, not age alone. Three to five years is a rough commonly cited service-life range, but climate, vibration, use, maintenance, and discharge history change the result.
- Use the manufacturer-specified battery size, chemistry, and CCA. More CCA than the vehicle requires does not automatically make it start faster.
- If the car was built with an AGM battery, do not automatically substitute a conventional flooded battery. The charging system and vehicle electronics may require the specified type.
Chevrolet’s battery-care guidance covers specified CCA and battery selection, while AAA lists warning signs of a failing battery.
Use the correct oil
Cold oil flows less easily, increasing the effort required to crank the engine. Use only the viscosity and specification listed in the owner’s manual. The W in a multigrade designation relates to low-temperature performance, but it does not mean that any oil with a lower number is automatically suitable. Do not switch to a thinner oil based on a generic winter recommendation.
Protect the cooling system
Before winter, check the coolant level, leaks, condition, and freeze protection. Use the manufacturer-approved coolant type; coolant chemistry is not interchangeable across all vehicles. NHTSA recommends checking coolant and following manufacturer specifications, and Hyundai’s winter guidance recommends checking freeze protection and using the specified ethylene-glycol coolant.
Never open a hot, pressurized radiator or coolant reservoir. Check it only when the system is cool and follow the manual.

Keep fuel and tires ready
Keep a gasoline vehicle’s tank close to full during severe winter weather when practical. This provides more resilience if you are delayed or stranded, but it is not a guaranteed cure for a no-start condition. Ordinary gasoline should not automatically be blamed for a freeze-related no-start; battery condition, connections, fuel delivery, and ignition faults are also common directions to investigate.
Cold air lowers tire pressure. Check all tires, including the spare if fitted, when they are cold and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or in the manual—not the maximum pressure molded into the tire. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance explains the importance of correct tire pressure.
Account for short trips
Repeated short trips may not replace the energy used during starting, particularly when headlights, defrosters, heated seats, and the blower are operating. Periodically idling the car is not an efficient battery-charging strategy. A properly selected battery maintainer may be more appropriate, but check the owner’s manual before connecting a charger, particularly on vehicles with battery-management systems or AGM batteries. Consumer Reports discusses chargers and maintainers, and AAA offers additional winter battery advice.
Keep jumper cables or a charged portable jump-starter in the vehicle if appropriate for your car. Do not store a lithium jump pack outside its specified storage-temperature limits; extreme cold can reduce its output or damage it.
Common cold-start mistakes to avoid
- Starting in a garage: dangerous carbon-monoxide exposure can occur even with the door open.
- Pouring boiling water on glass: thermal shock can crack a windshield, and water can refreeze.
- Cranking until the battery dies: this can overheat the starter and leave you without enough power for another attempt.
- Pumping the accelerator: generally unnecessary on modern fuel-injected gasoline cars and potentially capable of flooding some engines.
- Using ether or gasoline in a modern diesel intake: unsafe unless the exact manufacturer procedure explicitly permits it.
- Jumping a frozen or damaged battery: it can cause an explosion, injury, or vehicle damage.
- Guessing at oil or coolant: use the exact approved viscosity, specification, and coolant chemistry.
- Using a household space heater under the hood: this creates fire and electrical hazards unless the equipment and setup are specifically designed and approved for that use.
- Driving with snow or fog blocking visibility: scrape and defrost all necessary glass before moving.
- Leaving a running car unattended and unlocked: warm it only where it is safe and legal, and never indoors.
When to stop trying and call roadside assistance
Call for help instead of continuing the starting procedure when:
- The battery is swollen, cracked, leaking, iced over, or otherwise damaged.
- You smell fuel, burning insulation, or overheated wiring; see smoke; or hear a severe mechanical noise.
- The starter only clicks repeatedly or the battery is becoming weaker.
- The engine cranks at normal speed but does not start after the attempts allowed by the manual.
- The engine starts and repeatedly dies.
- The car is stuck, exposed to traffic, buried in snow, or inaccessible without unsafe exertion.
- You do not know the correct jump points or procedure for a hybrid, EV, stop-start vehicle, or vehicle with a remote battery.
- You are becoming cold, confused, exhausted, or otherwise unable to work safely.
Roadside assistance is especially sensible when a battery test, jump-start, tow, or diagnosis can be performed more safely than working beside the vehicle in freezing weather.

- Crank only for the model-specific time allowed in the owner’s manual.
- If it fails, wait as directed and diagnose the sound rather than repeatedly cranking.
- After startup, clear visibility, check for warning signs, and drive gently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I press the gas pedal when starting a cold modern car?
Usually no. Modern fuel-injected gasoline vehicles normally manage the cold-start mixture automatically. Keep the accelerator released unless the owner’s manual gives a specific flooded-engine procedure.
What does rapid clicking mean when a car is cold?
Rapid clicking usually points toward insufficient battery power or a poor battery connection. Stop repeated attempts and test or jump-start the battery only if it is not frozen or damaged and the vehicle manual permits it.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I jump-start a battery that froze overnight?
No. Do not jump-start or charge a battery that is suspected to be frozen, swollen, cracked, leaking, or visibly damaged. Call roadside assistance or have it inspected safely.
How long should a block heater be plugged in?
There is no universal time. Vehicle examples range from about two to four hours to at least four hours, with different temperature thresholds. Use the exact instructions for your engine and heater.
Can I warm my car in the garage with the door open?
Never. Gasoline and diesel engines can produce deadly carbon monoxide in a garage even when the door is open. Move the vehicle outdoors before starting it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start a cold car outdoors, clear the tailpipe and all windows, use Park or Neutral, switch off unnecessary loads, and do not pump the accelerator on a modern gasoline engine. Crank only as long as the vehicle manual allows. If you hear clicking, the battery weakens, the battery appears frozen or damaged, or the engine cranks without firing, stop before repeated attempts turn a cold-weather inconvenience into a damaged starter or a dead battery.
