Use a walk-around and test drive to spot warning signs, then have an independent mechanic inspect the car before you buy. A visual check, a vehicle-history report, and a dealer’s inspection claim cannot establish that an older car is mechanically sound. Ask for maintenance records, check the VIN for history and open recalls, and get the mechanic’s findings and repair estimates in writing.
What a buyer’s inspection can—and cannot—tell you
A first-pass inspection helps you notice obvious clues and decide whether to continue. It is not a diagnosis: noises, leaks, uneven tire wear, or corrosion can have several causes, and hidden problems may not show up during a short drive. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, “A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.” FTC guidance on buying a used car from a dealer explains why both checks matter.
The FTC’s Buyers Guide lists examples of possible defects across major systems. Use it as a screening reference, not as a complete diagnostic checklist or proof that a particular component is sound.
Before you go see the car
- Ask for the VIN and maintenance records. Compare the seller’s account with available records and the car’s mileage and condition.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask permission to take the car to a mechanic you choose. Request a written report with estimated costs for needed work.
- Review the vehicle history. A history report may show recorded ownership, accident, repair, or salvage information, but it may be incomplete and does not establish the car’s current mechanical condition. The FTC identifies NMVTIS-approved providers as one route to title-history information.
- Check for open recalls by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup; recall status is specific to the vehicle.
- If buying from a U.S. dealer, read the Buyers Guide. It states whether the vehicle is sold “as is” or with a warranty. Get any additional promises in writing.
Inspect the exterior, frame, and tires
Look in good light and take your time. Check for signs of collision repair, corrosion, and visible structural damage. The FTC Buyers Guide identifies frame cracks, corrective welds, rusted-through frame areas, and a bent or twisted frame—sometimes called “dog tracks”—as possible defects. A visual clue is a reason to ask for a professional evaluation, not a conclusion about the car’s history or safety.

Look for tire damage, mismatched sizes, and uneven wear. The Buyers Guide lists tread depth below 2/32 inch as a possible defect. An optional tread-depth gauge can measure that one condition; it cannot assess alignment, suspension, or the rest of the vehicle. Have a mechanic evaluate unusual wear or suspected repairs.
Look for signs of water or flood damage
Check under the seats and dashboard for mud or sand, around doors for rust, and inside for loose, stained, or mismatched carpet. Notice musty or decaying odors, but also unusually strong cleaning-product smells that might mask them. None of these clues alone proves flood damage. The FTC warns that water exposure can lead to mechanical and electrical problems and corrosion over time.

The NICB VINCheck can identify some flood-damaged, stolen-but-unrecovered, or salvage vehicles. Its coverage depends on the vehicle having been insured when damaged, so a clean result does not rule out flood exposure. If you see suspicious signs, have a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase.
Check under the hood and beneath the car
With the car parked, look for obvious fluid leaks and damaged or missing belts. Avoid hot or moving parts, and do not reach beneath a vehicle that is not properly supported. The FTC Buyers Guide lists possible engine defects such as oil leakage beyond normal seepage, cracked engine blocks or heads, missing or inoperable belts, and abnormal exhaust discharge. It also lists cooling-system leaks, an improperly functioning water pump, battery leakage, and starting or charging-system problems.

These are examples, not a complete inspection procedure. A mechanic can safely examine areas a buyer cannot see or assess, including the underside and internal condition, and connect findings to likely repairs.
Test-drive in conditions like your usual driving
When possible, ask to start the car cold, then drive it in conditions similar to your normal use. The FTC Buyers Guide lists symptoms involving the engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential, brakes, steering, and suspension. Listen and feel for unusual noise or vibration, observe whether the transmission shifts properly, and, in a manual car, notice clutch slipping or chattering. Pay attention to steering that binds or has excessive free play, abnormal braking, or a car that does not track consistently.

A test drive reveals symptoms, not their underlying cause. Ask the seller and your mechanic to explain any illuminated warning light and verify the condition. A light being off does not, by itself, prove that a system is fault-free.

Consumer.gov’s used-car checklist recommends reviewing maintenance records, testing the car in conditions like your normal driving, and hiring a mechanic who can identify needed repairs and likely costs. Compare the records with the seller’s claims and the car’s observed condition.

Choose an independent mechanic yourself and ask for a written inspection report and repair estimates. The FTC recommends an inspection even if a dealer calls the vehicle certified or inspected, or offers a service contract. A safety inspection may focus on roadworthiness and is not necessarily a full mechanical inspection. If a dealer will not allow an independent inspection, the FTC advises considering another seller.
Use the written estimates to compare the asking price plus near-term work with your budget and other options. There is no universal repair-cost threshold for walking away; the decision depends on the specific car, the work it needs, and what you can afford.
