Set up a lightweight sportbike by starting with the exact motorcycle’s suspension manual, measuring sag with the rider in full gear, and adjusting one variable at a time. There is no universal set of preload turns or clicker counts: the right settings depend on the bike, its suspension, rider and luggage load, and the surface.
How do I set up my suspension for street and track?
Use this order: identify the bike and its installed suspension, restore the manufacturer’s standard settings, measure sag, check spring suitability, then tune damping in small, recorded steps. Do not copy another motorcycle’s clicker counts or preload settings; even similar-looking sportbikes can have different components and adjustment ranges.
- Identify the setup. Note the motorcycle’s model year, fork and shock, available adjusters, and the baseline in its owner or suspension manual. Check any model-specific mounting instructions for aftermarket components.
- Measure sag. Record fixed front and rear reference distances with the suspension unloaded, with the bike on its wheels, and with the rider seated in normal position wearing riding gear. Work on flat ground and use consistent measurement points. The Öhlins road-and-track manual distinguishes free sag from rider-loaded ride height; follow the measurement procedure for the actual suspension.
- Set preload to the model’s target. Keep paired adjusters equal wherever the manual requires it. For example, the Honda CBR1000ST manual directs riders to keep left and right fork preload, compression, and rebound adjustments equal and within their limits. Its instructions and adjuster turns apply to that model only.
- Tune damping after sag and spring suitability are established. Return to the manual baseline, make a small change to either compression or rebound, and assess the result under comparable conditions before changing anything else.
- Record and reassess. Note the starting position, each change, load, and conditions. Öhlins Racing’s shock absorber manual advises: “Take notes, adjust in small steps and make only one adjustment at a time.”
A tape measure is useful for repeating the suspension-distance measurements. It does not tell you the correct sag target; that comes from the motorcycle or suspension maker’s recommendations and the specific setup.
How much sag should I run?
Use the manufacturer’s recommendation for the bike and fitted suspension where available. Published general guidance uses different formats and contexts, so treat the following figures as starting references—not interchangeable specifications.

| Source and context | Published starting reference | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| MH Suspension, 2026 article (the page displays © 2026; no separate publication date stated) | Track rider sag of 25–30% of total suspension travel, front and rear | A travel-based recommendation; confirm the actual bike’s travel and suspension guidance. |
| On Track / Southern Rider Club of Tasmania, Issue 2, approximately 2015 | Street rider sag commonly 30–35 mm; road-race rear sag 25–30 mm and front sag 25–30 mm | These are millimeter recommendations in the stated contexts, not a universal target. |
Do not combine a percentage of travel with a millimeter figure as though they describe the same target. Definitions and product-specific recommendations can differ; Öhlins’ manual, for instance, gives free-sag and ride-height guidance for its shock products and advises following model mounting instructions when available.
What do preload, compression, and rebound do?
- Preload changes the spring’s seat position and affects ride height. It is the adjustment used when setting sag, but it cannot make an unsuitable spring rate correct.
- Compression damping controls resistance as the suspension compresses.
- Rebound damping controls how the suspension returns after compression.
Set sag and assess spring suitability before using damping adjustments to address handling. Clicker changes cannot reliably compensate for the wrong spring or degraded suspension internals.

What changes between street and track?
Street riding brings variable pavement, bumps, weather, and ordinary changes in carried load. A track adds repeated hard braking, acceleration, and sustained cornering on a more predictable course; a rider may value support and consistency more there. Those are different demands, not a reason to abandon the motorcycle’s specified baseline.
The Honda CBR1000SP/ST owner manual illustrates how model-specific electronic suspension modes may address those conditions. It identifies M1 as suitable for track riding and M3 for street riding, and provides TRACK, SPORT, and RAIN situations. For that system, the manual describes increased front and rear firmness in TRACK as producing a more stable feel and being suitable for high-grip tires and high surface temperature; softer settings in SPORT/RAIN are associated with comfort and bumpy or wet conditions, while reduced firmness is described as useful in low-grip conditions. These modes and effects apply to that Honda system, not conventional suspension or other motorcycles.

- Rider, gear, and luggage load.
- Measured sag and front-to-rear balance.
- Spring suitability and suspension condition.
- Repeatable handling symptoms over the same section or comparable laps.
When should I get suspension service or spring advice?
If you cannot reach the recommended ride height within the available preload range, the spring may be wrong for the motorcycle and load. Öhlins advises consulting a dealer when spring mismatch is suspected. Worn or degraded internal components can also make adjustments inconsistent. A qualified suspension technician can assess spring rate, service needs, and model-compatible parts when a correct baseline cannot be achieved through the prescribed adjustments.
