Set your car budget from the total cost of owning the specific vehicle—not from the monthly payment a dealer advertises or the maximum loan a lender will approve. Start with your household cash flow, estimate every vehicle cost, and work backward to a purchase price and financing offer that leave room for your other needs.
1. Work out what your household can spare
Before looking at cars, write down monthly take-home income and regular expenses: housing, utilities, food, existing debt, and family or personal costs. Decide how much needs to stay available for savings and emergencies. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends making a monthly spending plan before deciding what is comfortable for a vehicle payment. CFPB: How much can I afford to borrow for a car or auto loan?
There is no universal payment-to-income percentage established by the cited CFPB and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance. Your workable limit depends on your income, other commitments, and the vehicle’s actual costs.
2. Set a total monthly transportation ceiling
Decide on a maximum for all recurring transportation costs together, not just the loan or lease payment. Include insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, and repairs. These costs continue while a loan payment stays the same—and some remain after the loan is paid off.

Get estimates for the candidate vehicle and your circumstances. Insurance depends on the vehicle and driver; fuel and upkeep depend on how and where you drive, the vehicle’s condition, and local costs. A generic national estimate may not reflect your actual budget. The CFPB’s vehicle-affordability guidance and its auto-loan resources distinguish the loan payment from other ownership expenses.
Stress-test your estimate: would the budget still work if repairs cost more than expected or your income were interrupted? The CFPB identifies maintenance and unexpected repairs as costs to account for, but does not prescribe a particular reserve amount. Choose a cushion that makes sense for your household rather than treating a fixed figure as official guidance.

3. Find a purchase price that fits
Ask the dealer for a written out-the-door price for the actual car, including taxes and fees, before discussing financing. Local charges vary. The FTC recommends getting that price in writing before visiting the lot and before talking about dealer financing. FTC: Financing or Leasing a Car
Start from the out-the-door amount, then account for your down payment and the realistic value of any trade-in to determine how much you would need to finance. If you still owe money on the trade-in, include that balance in the calculation; do not count the trade-in value twice. Add optional products or features only if you choose them deliberately, since they can raise the amount financed and the total repayment.

4. Compare loan offers beyond the payment
For each offer, compare the annual percentage rate (APR), amount financed, loan term, monthly payment, finance charge, and total of payments. Get terms from more than one lender. A lower monthly payment can come with a longer term and more interest overall; it can also leave you owing more than the car is worth.
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 36 months | $597 | $1,498 |
| 48 months | $458 | $1,999 |
| 60 months | $375 | $2,508 |
| 72 months | $320 | $3,024 |
These are rounded CFPB illustration figures for a $20,000 loan at 4.75%, not current market rates or a quote for an individual buyer. The CFPB page was last modified January 30, 2024. CFPB loan-term example

Insurance is separate from the loan payment, but it belongs in your budget; lenders require coverage for financed vehicles. Get an insurance estimate for the specific car and driver before committing. If you are considering a lease, compare the total lease obligation and your end-of-lease plan as well as the periodic payment. The FTC discusses both financing and leasing, but the cited guidance does not establish a personalized lease-versus-buy result.
