There is no universal reset sequence for an SCR system fault. First determine whether the dashboard is reporting low DEF/AdBlue fluid or an SCR malfunction: a refill may clear a low-fluid alert when the vehicle’s manual says so, but a system, dosing, or fluid-quality fault usually needs diagnosis and repair before any reset. The exact procedure depends on the vehicle and its warning message.
Identify what the warning is asking you to do
Read the full dashboard message and check the owner’s manual for your make, model, year, engine, and market. “Refill urea tank” is not the same instruction as “Service urea system” or a warning about incorrect fluid or dosing. A warning that remains despite adequate fluid is not proof that the tank needs more DEF.
- Low-fluid warning: The manual specifies adding DEF/urea fluid and may describe how the vehicle recognizes the refill.
- Fluid-quality or incorrect-fluid warning: Follow the manual’s service instructions; adding more fluid or clearing a code does not establish that the fluid or system is correct.
- SCR system or dosing malfunction: The underlying fault needs diagnosis. Hyundai recommends authorized inspection for an SCR malfunction, and Mahindra directs owners to an authorized service center for a dosing malfunction. Hyundai owner guidance; Mahindra owner guidance.
If the warning is only for low DEF
Use only the fluid specified for the vehicle, and follow its manual for the refill amount and method. Do not overfill. Refill instructions are a remedy for a low-fluid condition, not a general SCR-fault reset.
The procedure varies by vehicle. Hyundai’s manual, for its specified low-urea warning that can prevent restart, says to refill the tank, switch the Engine Start/Stop button to ON, and wait for the message to disappear. If it does not clear, the manual says to have the vehicle inspected. Hyundai owner guidance.

If the message reports a malfunction or does not clear
Arrange to have the SCR system diagnosed using the vehicle’s fault codes and the manufacturer’s procedure. Do not assume that clearing codes repairs the cause. Depending on the fault, the issue may involve the system, fluid quality, or dosing; the appropriate repair and reset steps are vehicle-specific.
A reset may be required after the fault is corrected, but it may require manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment. For example, a Mercedes-Benz service bulletin dated March 23, 2026, version 7, covers Model 907 vehicles with code KP7 and Generation 4 SCR. For the stated case involving P13DF00 or P300685 remaining after the applicable faults have been processed and corrected, it directs technicians to reset the SCR/AdBlue warning with XENTRY Diagnosis. The bulletin says to complete applicable quality or concentration diagnostics first when related codes are present, and not to reset before correcting the underlying condition. This is not a general procedure for other Mercedes configurations or other makes. Mercedes-Benz service bulletin.

Take restart restrictions and derates seriously
Some vehicles warn that they may not restart after being switched off; Ford also describes an AdBlue no-engine-start countdown for a detected system fault. If a countdown is active, prioritize diagnosis and repair rather than relying on a generic code clear or topping up the tank. The trigger and remaining time depend on the vehicle. Ford owner guidance.
Heavy-duty vehicles can apply staged engine derates or speed limits. The MY2024 PACCAR/Kenworth Engine Aftertreatment Operator Manual describes 25% and 40% derate stages and, at a later stage, a 5 mph vehicle speed limit for its covered application. Those figures are specific to that application and must not be treated as passenger-car rules or timings for other trucks. The manual calls for inspection and repair. PACCAR/Kenworth operator manual.

What to tell the service technician
To identify the correct procedure, provide the make, model, model year, engine, market, exact warning text, and any diagnostic trouble codes. Also report whether the tank was refilled, what fluid was used, and whether the warning includes a restart countdown or derate. Without those details, there is no reliable universal reset sequence or scan tool to recommend.
