If you know your Kenwood radio’s security code, use the procedure in the manual for your exact model to enter that existing code. If you have forgotten it, Kenwood’s guidance is to have an authorized service center decode the unit; a reset button does not recover an unknown code. The steps depend on which situation applies.
First, identify whether you know the code
“Reset” can mean two different things: re-entering a code you already know after the radio loses power, or recovering a code you no longer know. Kenwood treats these differently. Its US FAQ says an owner who does not know the code needs to take the unit to a Kenwood-authorized service center for decoding: Kenwood USA car-audio FAQ.
- You know the code: find the manual for the exact radio model and follow its code-entry procedure.
- You do not know the code: stop trying entries and contact an authorized service center.
How to re-enter a code you know
- Find the exact model number. Check the radio itself or its paperwork. Kenwood’s support page provides access to manuals and service resources.
- Look for the code in your records. Check the Car Audio Passport or other paperwork or record where you saved it. Kenwood manuals describe this as an owner-entered code; the manual explains how to enter it but does not reveal a forgotten personal code.
- Open the manual for that model. Follow its instructions and use the controls specified for your unit. A power interruption or pressing the reset button may cause some radios to ask for the existing code again.
- Enter the code you have recorded. If it is not accepted, follow the radio’s display and manual rather than continuing to guess.
Button names and entry procedures vary by model. Do not assume another Kenwood radio’s instructions apply to yours.
What to do if you forgot the code
- Contact a Kenwood-authorized service center. Kenwood USA’s FAQ states: “If you do not know the security code for your unit, you will need to take the unit to a KENWOOD authorized service center to have it decoded.” Use Kenwood’s support resources to locate an appropriate service route and confirm the center’s current requirements before visiting or shipping.
- Gather proof of ownership. Kenwood says a service center may require proof of purchase because the code is an anti-theft feature. Have your receipt or other ownership documentation ready.
- Confirm whether the unit must be removed or shipped. Service arrangements vary. Kenwood’s US support guidance says a shipped product should include your contact information, a copy of the purchase receipt, and a description of the problem, and should be securely packed. Check with the selected center for current instructions before sending anything.
Other regional Kenwood pages also point owners toward authorized service or a specialist dealer. For example, Kenwood Germany’s support guidance describes sending a radio for decoding or contacting a specialist dealer and requests proof of purchase or a dealer declaration. Kenwood Belgium likewise directs owners to an authorized dealer or service center. These are regional examples, not universal service instructions; confirm the process in your country.

Why repeated guessing can make the wait longer
Some Kenwood manuals specify lockout delays after incorrect entries. In one documented model family, the manual lists a five-minute wait after the second wrong entry, one hour after the third, and 24 hours after the fourth. Those timings apply to that manual’s models, not every Kenwood radio. Check your own manual and the display; if you are unsure of the code, stop guessing and contact authorized service.

Kenwood’s documented paths are model-specific entry for a code you know and authorized decoding for a code you have forgotten. The cited support guidance does not validate generic reset tools, code generators, or software as a way to recover an unknown code. A car-audio installer may be able to help access or remove the radio, but confirm directly whether the provider is authorized and can perform decoding before arranging service.
