Turn on the vehicle’s defroster to soften the ice, then clear it with a plastic ice scraper. Before driving, make sure every window and visibility-relevant area—including lights, the roof, hood and backup camera—is clear. Don’t pour hot water on frozen glass or force frozen wipers to move.

Warm the glass with the defroster
Start the vehicle and set the climate controls to defrost. The heat helps soften frost and ice, making it easier to clear. Controls vary by vehicle, so follow the owner’s manual if you’re unsure which setting to use. AAA Minneapolis explains the defrost-first approach.

Scrape with a plastic tool
Use a plastic ice scraper on the softened glass. A scraper with an integrated snow brush is useful for clearing loose snow as well; the National Weather Service recommends keeping a windshield scraper and brush in the car. National Weather Service winter preparedness guidance.

Clear the whole vehicle and check the wipers
Clear every window, not just a small viewing patch on the windshield. Remove snow and ice from the lights, roof, hood and backup camera, too. Before switching on the wipers, check that the blades are free of ice. AAA’s visibility guidance covers these areas.

Protect the windshield and wipers
- Don’t pour hot water on frozen glass. The sudden temperature change can crack the windshield, AAA warns. AAA’s deicing advice.
- Don’t use a metal scraper or tap the glass. Metal can scratch the glass, and tapping it to break ice can cause damage. Use a plastic scraper instead. AAA Minneapolis.
- Don’t run the wipers through ice or yank frozen blades off the glass. Wait for the defroster to loosen the ice or clear it manually. Scraping or pulling can damage the rubber blades; forcing the wipers may also harm wiper components. AAA’s wiper-blade guidance and GM Bulletin 24-NA-164, hosted by NHTSA.
- Never use a torch or hammer on windshield ice. AAA identifies both as damaging methods. AAA Minneapolis.
Do you need deicer spray?
Usually, the essential combination is the vehicle’s defroster and a plastic scraper. A glass deicer may help loosen stubborn buildup, but it’s an optional aid, not a substitute for clearing the glass. If you choose one, use a product intended for automotive glass and follow its label. AAA also discusses a homemade isopropyl-alcohol mixture, but does not establish that drivers need it. For winter conditions, keep a scraper and brush in the car. Winter washer fluid with deicing properties can be a useful supporting product, but it does not remove ice already bonded to the windshield.

Prevent ice from building up
When freezing weather is expected, parking under cover or placing a windshield cover over the glass can reduce buildup. A tarp, towel or sheet can also serve as a covering; a dedicated cover is optional. Choose any cover for a fit that stays in place and an attachment method suited to your vehicle.
