Identify the exact car set before ordering parts
A LEGO car’s appearance alone may not tell you which set it came from. Cars can share colors, wheels, windscreens, or body shapes, and a similar-looking part is not necessarily the one shown in the original build. Start with any information you still have: the box, instruction booklet, set number written on a storage container, or other records of the model.

LEGO’s missing-pieces guidance says the set name or number can be found on the box or building instructions. If you have either item, record the set number exactly. If you have several cars or mixed pieces, keep the identified car and its loose parts separate while you work so that parts from another model do not end up on the order list.

- Look for the set name and number on the box or instructions, as LEGO recommends.
- Keep the set number with your notes. It helps distinguish this car from models with similar names or designs.
- If the booklet belongs to a different version of a car, do not use it to decide which pieces are missing. Confirm the set identity first.
If you do not have the original packaging
Use any surviving instruction booklet or set information you can locate to establish the set before you order. LEGO’s Building Instructions section provides free PDF downloads for thousands of sets. Search there for the set using its identifying information; the correct guide is more useful than trying to infer the original parts from the car’s appearance alone. The available evidence does not establish that every older set has a downloadable guide, so do not assume a guide exists until you have checked.

Get the building instructions and map the problem
Find the official guide before taking the car apart or placing an order. LEGO says its Building Instructions section contains thousands of complete guides available as free PDF downloads. The guide shows the intended assembly and gives you a reference for what belongs in each location.
Use the guide to work out whether a part is actually missing, damaged, or simply attached somewhere you did not expect. If the car is partly assembled, compare it with the relevant build steps and note the point where the existing model stops matching the instructions. If it is already disassembled, use the steps to identify which elements the build calls for, rather than ordering parts based on a visual guess.
Make one list with a clear status for each part
Write down each part you cannot use, and label it as missing or damaged. That distinction matters because LEGO presents separate routes for reporting missing pieces and broken pieces. Keep the list focused on parts needed to complete the car; avoid adding pieces just because they look similar to a part in the guide.

For each item, record the description and any identifier shown in the instructions. LEGO’s UK guidance for a missing piece in a new set asks for a complete piece description, the element ID found in the list at the back of the instructions, and the set number. The exact process may vary by region, but those details make a useful, specific parts list.

- Set number: Record it once at the top of the list and keep it with the request or order.
- Part description: Note the shape and color shown in the guide. Be as specific as the guide allows.
- Element ID: If the booklet includes an element list at the back, copy the relevant ID rather than relying on a vague visual description.
- Status: Mark whether the part is absent or present but broken.
- Quantity: Count how many of that part the build requires and how many usable ones you already have.
Counting usable pieces prevents a common ordering mistake: requesting the total number shown in the build when some of those pieces are already in the car or in its parts pile. If a part is broken but still present, count it as unusable rather than as a spare.
Choose between a replacement request and buying a part
There are two practical LEGO routes to check. The replacement-pieces service is the route to investigate when a piece is missing from a set or a piece is broken. Pick a Brick is the route for buying individual pieces. LEGO separates the missing-piece, broken-piece, and buying-pieces options on its service pages, so choose the route that matches what happened instead of treating every repair as a purchase.

When the car came from a new set
If a set was new and a piece was absent, check the missing-piece route first. LEGO’s UK instructions for this case call for a complete piece description, the element ID from the back of the booklet, and the set number. Since that guidance is UK-specific, use it as a guide to the information to prepare, not as a guarantee that the request form or eligibility rules are identical in other countries.

When a piece broke during use
Use the broken-piece route rather than describing the part as missing. Identify the piece from the instructions and record the set number. Whether the request can be fulfilled depends on LEGO’s current regional process and the particular part; the official pages cited here do not promise replacement for every break or every set.
When you simply need to buy parts
Pick a Brick is appropriate when you want to purchase individual pieces. It may also help with an older-set rebuild: LEGO says a set-number search can be used for rebuilding older sets. Treat search results as candidates to verify, not as proof that every part from a set is currently stocked.
Search Pick a Brick by the strongest identifier you have
LEGO’s Pick a Brick help page says searches can use color, category, keyword, piece name, or number. If you have an element or part number from the instructions, start there; a precise identifier is more useful than a broad description. If you do not have a number, try the part name, then refine with color or category. For an older set, you can try its set number as LEGO describes, then compare any result against the instruction guide before adding it to a cart.
- Open Pick a Brick for your region. Product availability and ordering details can vary, so use the service for the country where you intend to order.
- Enter the part number or name if available. Use the identifier from the booklet or element list when you have one.
- Refine a broad search. Add a color, category, or descriptive keyword if a number or name does not produce a clear match.
- For an older set, try the set number. LEGO says this can help when rebuilding older sets, but still compare the returned pieces to the guide.
- Verify each candidate. Match the shape and color to the instructions and to the existing car before ordering. Do not assume a visually similar piece has the same fit.
- Check quantity and current order rules. Confirm the number of pieces you need and review the regional limits and availability shown before submitting.
Pick a Brick’s official description is: “With Pick a Brick, you can search by color, category, keyword, piece name or number to find the bricks you want for your creation.” A search can help locate a candidate part, but the car’s guide remains the reference for deciding whether it is the correct one.

US order limits are regional and time-sensitive
LEGO’s US Pick a Brick help page states a maximum of 400 unique pieces in an order flow: 200 Bestsellers and 200 Standard, with up to 999 of each piece. The page does not state a publication year for those limits. Treat these as US operational details that can change, not as a worldwide rule; check the current US help page before preparing a large parts list. The reviewed pages do not establish matching limits for other regions.
Check each part before submitting the request or order
A careful comparison is more reliable than ordering by appearance. Use the instructions and, where possible, the element ID or part number. Compare the candidate with an intact example from the car if you have one. Check its color and shape, and make sure you have not confused a neighboring part in the same build step with the one you need.
- Confirm the model: The guide and set number should correspond to the car you are rebuilding.
- Confirm the piece: Match the identifier where available, then check the illustrated shape and color.
- Confirm the count: Order or request only the number needed to restore the build, accounting for usable pieces already on hand.
- Confirm the route: Use the missing- or broken-piece service for the relevant issue, or Pick a Brick when purchasing individual parts.
- Confirm local availability and terms: LEGO’s store information indicates availability can vary, and the relevant ordering details may be regional.
If an exact piece is not available, do not assume that another part will fit or preserve the original build. The supplied official guidance does not establish compatibility for substitutes. You can keep the car unfinished while you identify another legitimate route, or decide separately whether a different design is acceptable; that would be a modification rather than a confirmed restoration to the instructions.

When you have the needed usable pieces, rebuild against the official instructions rather than relying on memory. If the car is partly assembled, locate the last step that matches the current model and continue from there. If it is dismantled, follow the sequence from the beginning or from the relevant stage shown by the surviving sections. This limits the chance of repeating a build error or hiding an absent part inside a later assembly.

- Lay out the car’s existing pieces and the newly sourced parts so you can compare them with the guide.
- Follow one instruction step at a time, checking the illustrated parts before attaching them.
- When the build uses a part you previously marked missing or damaged, confirm that you are using the identified replacement.
- Compare the completed section with the guide before moving on, especially if you resumed from the middle of the build.
- At the end, check that the rebuilt car matches the intended assembly shown in the instructions.
This procedure restores the documented build as far as the correct pieces and instructions allow. It does not establish that an unverified substitute is compatible, or that every set has every part available through current services.
Common problems and the next useful check
The search returns several similar parts
Return to the set guide and look for a more exact identifier, especially the element ID or part number. Narrow the search by color or category, then compare the part’s shape with the illustration and an intact counterpart if available. Do not order the first visually close result.
You cannot find the set number
Check the box and booklet, where LEGO says the set name or number can be found. If the box is gone, look for identifying information in the instructions or any set records you still have, then use LEGO’s Building Instructions section to locate the matching guide. Without a confirmed set identity, a parts list based only on resemblance is uncertain.

The booklet is missing
Search LEGO’s Building Instructions section for the set’s downloadable PDF. LEGO says the section contains thousands of complete guides, but that does not establish that every set is represented. If you find the right guide, use it to identify the pieces and build sequence; do not substitute instructions for a similar-looking car.
A piece is unavailable in Pick a Brick
Availability can vary, and LEGO’s store information does not establish that every old set or part is offered. Check that you searched by the best available identifier and chose the correct region. If the part still is not listed, the evidence does not support promising a restock or a compatible substitute; check the replacement-pieces service if the situation is eligible, or keep the part noted while considering your options.
You have a long parts list
Review the regional order limits before submitting it. For the US, LEGO’s help page states the 400-unique-piece maximum divided into 200 Bestsellers and 200 Standard, and up to 999 of each piece; those details may change. Do not apply those numbers to another region without checking its current guidance.
You are unsure whether a part is missing or merely misplaced
Compare the remaining build and loose pieces with the guide before ordering. A step-by-step check may show that the part is attached in a different location, or that you have already counted it among loose pieces. Add it to the list only when you have established that it is absent or unusable.
