Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can earn with a car by driving it for work, renting it out, or using it to provide a separate service. Options range from Amazon Flex package blocks and peer-to-peer car sharing to local errands or mobile detailing—but availability, eligibility, costs, and insurance vary. Compare what you could keep after expenses, not just the money a platform or customer pays you.
First, choose how you want your car to earn
The options fall into three categories: you drive the car to do jobs, someone else rents access to it, or you use it to support a service business. The first two have distinct examples in the sources linked below. Several other ideas are possibilities to investigate locally, not confirmed listings with universal availability or established earnings.
Before committing, estimate what each option would leave you after platform or payment fees, fuel, added mileage, maintenance, tires, insurance, and the vehicle’s loss in value. Include your time and any equipment or supplies. A high gross payout is not necessarily a profitable use of the car, and no reliable earnings figure is established here for these ideas.
Earn by driving your car
1. Deliver packages with Amazon Flex
Amazon Flex delivery partners use their own vehicles and select available delivery blocks. Amazon’s requirements page gives examples of acceptable vehicle types: a four-door sedan, SUV, van, or covered-bed truck, generally mid-sized or larger. Check the current requirements and local block availability before counting on this work; an open block is not guaranteed just because you meet the vehicle criteria.

2. Deliver rental cars or reposition vehicles
Uber describes Car Delivery as moving vehicles between rental locations, renters, and business locations. It is offered in select markets, not nationwide. Uber lists an active courier profile, a valid driver’s license, a clear profile photo, and background checks that include criminal and motor-vehicle screening among the onboarding conditions. Check whether the option is available where you live and read the current terms in Uber’s Vehicle Delivery overview.
3. Deliver restaurant meals
Food delivery is a car-based gig-work category, but platform rules, service areas, and insurance arrangements differ. The IRS includes driving for deliveries among its examples of gig work, and Turo identifies food delivery as a type of professional use. Neither source establishes the current requirements or pay of a particular meal-delivery provider. Verify a platform’s rules and how your insurance applies before accepting orders.
4. Deliver groceries or retail orders
Grocery and retail delivery may be available through local services, but do not assume a particular provider operates in your area or accepts your vehicle. Check the service area, vehicle requirements, pay structure, expected mileage, and insurance terms before signing up. The sources cited here do not verify a named grocery service’s current rules.

5. Take local courier jobs
Businesses may need documents, parts, or other items transported locally. The IRS includes on-demand work in its description of gig work, but a particular courier company can set its own requirements. Ask about mileage reimbursement or fees, delivery deadlines, proof of delivery, commercial insurance, and any licensing rules that apply in your area.
6. Run errands and complete local tasks
Errands and task work can include jobs where having a car helps you get to a customer or transport permitted purchases. The IRS names running errands and completing tasks as gig-work examples. Demand and access depend on local customers or platforms, and not every task will justify the time and driving it requires.
7. Handle deliveries for a local business
A restaurant, shop, or other local business may need delivery help without operating its own fleet. This is a lead to validate, not a guaranteed job: find out how deliveries are assigned, who pays for mileage and parking, what happens if an order is delayed or damaged, and what insurance the business expects. Estimate the route’s costs before agreeing to a flat rate.
Earn by renting out access to your car
8. List your car on a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform
For a car that would otherwise sit unused, peer-to-peer sharing can earn money by renting access rather than by having you drive each trip. Turo’s US host information says hosts must be at least 21, meet vehicle eligibility rules, have valid auto insurance, satisfy regional legal and insurance standards, and complete host orientation. It also directs hosts to check whether their lender or lessor permits sharing.

Do not assume your personal policy covers a rental. Turo says many personal auto policies exclude peer-to-peer car sharing. Review your policy, local rules, financing or lease terms, and the platform’s current protection and damage-responsibility terms before listing. See Turo’s US vehicle-listing requirements and its earnings-plan overview and detailed earnings-plan terms.
9. Rent the vehicle directly to a local business or operator
A direct arrangement could put an underused vehicle to work, but it is not the same as using a car-sharing platform. Agree in writing on permitted use, who may drive, payment, mileage, maintenance, damage, and return conditions. Confirm the insurance and legal treatment with your insurer and, if needed, a qualified adviser; do not assume a platform’s protection applies to a private rental.
Use the car to provide a separate service
10. Pick up and deliver furniture or marketplace items
Local buyers and sellers may need help moving an item between locations. This is most plausible if your vehicle can safely carry the item and you have a way to secure it. Check local demand, vehicle capacity, loading safety, and insurance before offering the service. A sedan will not suit every pickup, and the sources here do not establish a specific marketplace program or earnings level.
11. Offer moving help with a suitable vehicle
A van, pickup, or trailer may be necessary for moving jobs, so this is not a fit for every car owner. You may also need equipment and help lifting. Check local licensing, liability, and insurance requirements, and make clear what the customer is paying for: vehicle use, labor, or both.

12. Provide mobile car cleaning or detailing
Your car can help you reach customers and carry cleaning supplies, but the service itself requires equipment, materials, customer acquisition, and time. Work out whether you can perform the job at the customer’s location and whether any local business requirements apply. Validate demand before investing in supplies or modifying your vehicle.
13. Offer mobile mechanic work if you are qualified
A car can help you reach customers and transport tools, but mechanic work depends on relevant skills and equipment—not simply owning a vehicle. Check what services you are qualified to perform, what liability coverage you need, and whether local licensing applies. Treat this as a service business rather than passive income from the car.
14. Carry advertising on your car
A wrap or decal arrangement may pay you to display advertising, but check whether there is a legitimate program in your area and read its eligibility, payment, installation, removal, and contract terms. No current provider, standard payment, or universal eligibility is established here; do not rely on a promised rate without verifying the offer.

- Time: Include onboarding, waiting, travel to the first job, loading, cleaning, and customer communication—not only time on a delivery or rental.
- Vehicle use: Estimate business miles, fuel, maintenance, tires, and wear. Extra mileage can also affect the car’s value and how long you want to keep it.
- Fixed and financing costs: Check whether your lender or lessor permits the intended commercial use, and account for insurance and vehicle costs appropriate to the work.
- Fees and risk: Understand platform charges, cancellation terms, damage responsibility, and any costs of equipment, supplies, parking, or tolls.
- Control: Consider whether you choose the schedule, accept jobs when offered, or make the car unavailable for your own use while it is rented.
For renting, compare the expected return with the time the car may be unavailable and the condition in which it must be returned. For driving jobs, compare the pay and route with the miles and unpaid time needed to complete them. For a service business, include the time spent finding customers and doing work beyond driving.
Track business use and understand the tax rules
The IRS says gig income is taxable even if you do not receive an information return. It says you must file a tax return if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more from gig work, even if the work is part-time, temporary, or a side job. Independent contractors may also need to make estimated tax payments. See the IRS page on managing taxes for gig work for current guidance.
For eligible business use of a car, IRS Topic 510 describes the standard-mileage and actual-expense methods. If you use a vehicle personally as well as for work, separate the business and personal use. Under the actual-expense method, potentially relevant costs include the business share of gas, oil, repairs, tires, insurance, registration, licenses, and depreciation or lease payments. Business-related tolls and parking may be separately deductible under the guidance. Method eligibility and timing rules matter, so check IRS Topic 510 and the current instructions for your tax year, or consult a qualified tax professional.
Keep records of income, expenses, and business use that substantiate what you report. A mileage logbook can be a convenient aid, but no particular product is IRS-endorsed and a logbook alone may not capture all records you need. Choose a method you can maintain consistently and retain supporting receipts and records.
Quick Recap
How to choose your first option
- Check local availability and eligibility. Confirm the platform or customer actually operates where you are and that your car qualifies. Availability can be market-specific, as Uber’s select-market vehicle delivery illustrates.
- Ask your insurer and lender or lessor. Describe the exact use—delivery, carrying customers’ goods, or rental—and get clarity before you start.
- Estimate costs using a realistic route or booking. Include all business miles, fees, added wear, equipment, and time, not just the headline payment.
- Try a limited commitment first. Where terms allow, test whether the work fits your schedule and produces an acceptable return before buying equipment or relying on it for regular income.
- Keep records from day one. Record income, expenses, and business mileage so you can judge the actual result and prepare for tax reporting.
