For U.S. events, accessible EV charging is a separate consideration from required accessible parking: spaces serving chargers do not replace the parking facility’s minimum accessible car and van spaces.
Start with the full visitor journey
Accessibility is not solved by reserving a few parking spaces. Visitors need usable information before they arrive, a route from arrival points to the entrance, a way to move between exhibits and amenities, and access to participation and services. The ADA National Network’s temporary-event planning guide recommends treating these pieces as connected parts of the event.
For an outdoor expo, identify the route visitors will actually use and check that it is continuous, wide, smooth, as level as the site permits, and free of hazards and obstructions. Walk it before committing to a venue, then walk it again after setup: display vehicles, tents, check-in tables, queues, signs, cables and vendor equipment can change conditions substantially.
Choose and inspect the site
Before confirming a venue or layout, walk from arrival points to every event function. Record slopes, surface changes, curb transitions, narrow points, drainage, crossings, low or overhanging hazards, and places where crowds or equipment might block movement. Where practicable, include people with disabilities in the site review.

Repeat the inspection after installation, while the route is in its operating condition. A drawing may not show the cable crossing, queue spillover or tent weight that becomes a barrier on event day. The City of Los Angeles Department on Disability also cautions that temporary changes can create new barriers; see its event accessibility guidance.
Make arrival, parking and drop-off usable
Place accessible parking on the shortest accessible route to the entrance, and ensure drop-off arrangements connect to that route. Keep access aisles clear, level with their parking spaces and protected from parking, lines or queue spillover. Consider van clearance and room for lifts to deploy. If parking is off-site, assess the entire trip, including the route to any shuttle and the shuttle service itself.
For U.S. events, ADA.gov describes accessible car spaces at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle, subject to surface and slope requirements. Van spaces have additional width or access-aisle options, and the space, aisle and vehicular route must provide at least 98 inches of vertical clearance. These are federal guidance dimensions, not a site-specific parking count or a substitute for checking the applicable requirements. Review the current ADA.gov accessible parking guidance and local rules for the facility and event.

Plan EV charging access separately
Charging stalls need their own accessible layout and route to the rest of the expo. The U.S. Access Board’s technical assistance recommends, for its accessible mobility configuration, a vehicle charging space at least 11 feet wide by 20 feet long and an adjoining aisle at least 5 feet wide. It also addresses usable clear ground space, accessible charger controls and a connecting accessible route. See the Board’s design recommendations for accessible EV charging stations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Map more than the stall: check the path from the charging space to the event, charger control placement and usability, connector reach, and variation in vehicle inlet locations. Confirm that the route remains clear of cables, parked vehicles and event equipment. These technical recommendations do not by themselves establish that a particular charger or site arrangement complies with all applicable requirements.
Crucially, the Access Board’s parking spaces guide says spaces serving EV chargers do not count toward the minimum required accessible car and van parking spaces. Plan for both charging access and the facility’s required accessible parking; do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

Build a stable route across outdoor terrain
Choose the most level feasible route and keep it continuous between arrival, displays and amenities. Grass, sand, gravel or uneven ground may make a route difficult to use. Ontario’s guide to accessible events suggests buying or renting temporary outdoor flooring to stabilize routes over surfaces such as grass or sand.
Flooring is a possible tool, not a guarantee of accessibility. Inspect the installed surface for firmness, stability, slip resistance, edges, transitions and drainage. Test it in place, and keep tent weights, display stands, cables, cones, signs and queue barriers out of the clear route. The ADA parking guidance also describes firm, stable and slip-resistant surface principles; no particular mat or flooring product is endorsed by these sources.
Arrange displays and amenities along the accessible route
Make it possible to reach viewing areas without requiring visitors to cross inaccessible ground or take an unreasonable detour. Keep demonstrations and information points on the accessible route, and include the practical services that make a visit workable in the layout review.

- Restrooms, seating, food and drinking water
- Shelter and emergency arrangements
- Queues, demonstrations and other activities
The temporary-event guide addresses exhibits, activities, communications, concessions, toilets, drinking water and shelter. It does not give one vehicle-display spacing rule for every expo: dimensions depend on applicable standards and the site plan. Confirm the requirements that apply to the actual venue and event rather than assuming a generic layout is compliant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Publish useful access information and brief staff
Before the event, describe what visitors can actually use, including any limitations. Give clear directions in advance and signs on site. The ADA National Network guide and ADA For Business accessible-events guidance emphasize advance information and accessible participation.
- Where accessible parking, drop-off and EV charging are located
- Which entrance is usable and how to reach it
- Route surface and distance, where known
- Restroom and seating access
- A contact for access questions or requests
Brief staff and volunteers to give directions, keep access aisles clear, spot route obstructions and escalate problems. Make sure someone is responsible for checking the route during the event, not only during setup.

Compare sites and layouts by the journey they support
When more than one venue or arrangement is possible, compare how each performs across the whole visit rather than choosing on display space alone.
- Continuity and condition of the accessible route
- Proximity and convenience of accessible parking, drop-off and charging
- Charger placement, control access, connector reach and vehicle compatibility
- Terrain and exposure to weather
- Availability of accessible restrooms, seating, shelter and services
- Temporary infrastructure and staff coordination needed to keep routes usable
These considerations help frame a site review; they do not establish a universal ranking of venues or products. U.S. ADA and Access Board guidance is the main compliance reference here, while Ontario and Los Angeles guidance offer practical event-planning examples. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, property, event arrangement and facility, so verify the rules that apply locally before making a compliance claim.
