Maintain the E31 BMW 850CSi’s S70 V12 using the documentation that matches your car, not a generic modern-engine schedule. BMW’s 1994 E31 owner’s handbook lists 8.25 L of engine oil with filter renewal and 13.0 L for the cooling system including the heater circuit. Those are capacity references—not instructions to pour in those exact amounts during a routine service or substitutes for the correct oil, coolant, or service procedure.
Start with the car’s VIN, build date, market, handbook and service history. The 1994 handbook provides useful model-specific reference data, but does not establish one complete, current maintenance schedule for every 850CSi.

Identify the car and the right service information
The car covered here is the E31 850CSi with BMW’s S70 engine. BMW’s parts catalog identifies that model-and-engine pairing. Before ordering parts or carrying out service, confirm that your car is the 850CSi variant and check its VIN, build date, original market and existing service records. A model name alone may not establish which market-specific or year-specific instructions apply.

- Collect the car’s records. Note dates and mileage for oil and filter changes, coolant service, spark-plug replacement and any engine or cooling-system repairs. Treat undocumented work as unverified rather than assuming it was completed.
- Match the documentation. Check the handbook and service information for the car’s year and market. Confirm component fitment against the VIN before buying parts.
- Resolve unknowns before servicing. If the applicable oil specification, fluid, part or procedure is unclear, ask a BMW service professional familiar with the E31/S70 rather than filling the gap with a modern guess.
Keep three kinds of information separate: the car’s identity, the handbook’s reference figures and the actual work instructions. The VIN and market help establish which documentation and parts apply. The handbook supplies useful capacity and spark-plug references. The workshop procedure explains how to perform a repair or service. One cannot safely stand in for another: for example, an oil capacity is not an oil-selection specification, and a workshop index listing a cooling procedure is not the procedure itself.
When records are thin, make a short list of what is confirmed and what remains unknown before arranging work. A dated invoice or service entry can support a completed task; a previous owner’s recollection or a part already installed may not establish which specification was used. This does not mean every unknown requires immediate replacement. It means the next service decision should be made with the applicable schedule and a technician who can assess the particular car, rather than by assuming an undocumented task was done or prescribing a universal reset interval.
Engine oil: what the handbook establishes
BMW AG’s 1994 E31 owner’s handbook lists 8.25 L (14.5 imperial pints) of engine oil with filter renewal for the 850CSi. This is a capacity reference for the stated service condition. It does not mean that every routine drain will remove exactly 8.25 L, or that the engine should be filled with that entire amount without checking the level using the applicable procedure.

The handbook describes the oil as “Brand-name HD oil for spark-ignition engines.” That is period wording, not a current viscosity grade, product recommendation or confirmation that a particular modern formulation is suitable. The handbook data available here does not establish a present-day oil brand, viscosity or specification. Check the documentation applicable to the car and obtain qualified guidance if it does not resolve the choice.
These distinctions matter when choosing oil. A capacity tells you the stated system volume under a particular service condition; it does not tell you the oil’s viscosity, current specification, formulation or brand. Nor does the phrase “HD oil” identify a contemporary product. Do not use the capacity number or a product label alone to conclude that an oil is correct for this S70. If comparing oils or filters, use verified fitment and applicable BMW documentation as the basis; no particular current products or product-to-product comparison is established here.
How to approach an oil and filter service
- Confirm the oil and filter requirements first. Use the applicable BMW information and VIN-based fitment check. Do not infer a filter part number or a modern oil grade from the 8.25 L capacity figure.
- Use the S70 service procedure. The E31 workshop documentation index lists an oil-and-filter procedure. Follow the full, correct procedure for the S70 variant, including any required checks; the index alone does not supply those steps.
- Use capacity as a reference, not a target pour. After service, establish the final level using BMW’s prescribed checking procedure. Do not assume the amount drained or the handbook capacity determines the correct final fill by itself.
- Record what was done. Log the date, mileage, oil and filter identification, and the service performed. This makes the next decision depend on a known history rather than guesswork.
For an owner reviewing an oil-service invoice, check whether it identifies the date and mileage, the oil and filter used, and the service performed. If those details are missing, ask the shop to clarify what can be confirmed. The 8.25 L reference can help spot a misunderstanding about the handbook figure, but it cannot verify the final fill level or prove that the selected oil and filter were appropriate. Those questions need the specific procedure and fitment information.

Cooling system: capacity is not a bleeding procedure
The 1994 handbook lists 13.0 L (22.9 imperial pints) for the cooling system including the heater circuit. This figure describes system capacity. It is not an instruction to fill a hot engine, nor does it tell you how to bleed the system or how much coolant a particular drain-and-refill will take.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The E31 workshop documentation index lists coolant checks, coolant replacement and S70 cooling-system procedures. Use the applicable procedure for any coolant service; do not improvise a fill or bleeding method from the capacity number. The handbook’s storage advice also calls for checking coolant level and concentration and correcting them if necessary. It does not identify a current coolant product or a concentration target in the information described here, so confirm those details in the documentation for your car.
Do not treat a capacity mismatch during a service as proof of a fault by itself. The handbook’s number includes the heater circuit, while a particular service operation may not remove the full system volume. The correct refill and bleeding steps depend on the model-specific instructions, not on forcing a drain-and-refill to match 13.0 L. If the level or concentration needs correction, identify the required product and procedure before adding fluid.
When coolant service or a level correction is needed
- Check the level and concentration as directed by the applicable BMW instructions.
- Do not open or service a hot cooling system. Use the model-specific safety and service procedure.
- For replacement, bleeding or diagnosis, consult the S70 cooling-system procedure or a qualified E31 specialist; capacity alone cannot establish the correct steps.
- Record the service and any correction. If the level or concentration is outside the prescribed range, resolve it using the correct procedure rather than treating the capacity figure as a diagnosis.
If the reason for a coolant correction is unclear, record what was observed and have the cause assessed rather than repeatedly topping up without context. The sources cited here provide capacity and general storage-check guidance, not diagnostic thresholds or a repair flowchart. A low reading, an uncertain concentration or a recent cooling-system repair should therefore be handled using the correct workshop instructions and the car’s history, not an invented threshold based on the total capacity.
Spark plugs and replacement-part fitment
The 1994 E31 handbook lists Bosch F8 LCB2 double-earth-electrode spark plugs for the 850CSi. Verify the specification against the particular car and its applicable documentation before purchase. This historical handbook entry does not establish present-day availability, a current equivalent, or a replacement interval.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApply the same VIN and market check to filters and other replacement parts. The information here does not provide current filter part numbers or establish compatibility for every production year and market. Do not use a general E31 listing as proof of fitment for an 850CSi S70. If a seller’s listing conflicts with the car’s documentation or the VIN-based fitment information, resolve the discrepancy before ordering instead of assuming that similar model names mean interchangeable parts.

The same handbook also lists 2.3 L for the manual gearbox and 2.7 L for the final drive. Those are drivetrain figures, not S70 engine-oil capacities. The handbook refers readers to BMW service points for the correct gearbox grade and calls for brand-name hypoid gear oil for the final drive. They should not be mistaken for engine-service instructions or used to infer an engine-fluid specification.
The table is intentionally limited to the reference information that can be tied to the 1994 handbook. It is not an all-systems maintenance checklist, a parts-buying list or a claim that every car still has its original components. In particular, it cannot supply a current oil or coolant product recommendation, filter number, service interval, price, or reliability statistic. If you need one of those answers, go to the applicable service booklet or S70 workshop information and verify it for the individual car.
Use the car’s service schedule, not an invented universal interval
The information described here does not provide a complete interval table for every 850CSi year and market. It would therefore be misleading to prescribe a single mileage or time interval. Find the service booklet or schedule applicable to your vehicle and use its requirements alongside the car’s actual service history and condition.
If records are incomplete, ask a qualified BMW service professional to establish the car’s maintenance baseline using the right documentation. Do not interpret missing records as evidence that a service is unnecessary, and do not treat a capacity table as a maintenance schedule. Keep a written log of dates, mileage, parts and fluids used, and any work still to be confirmed.
When reviewing a proposed schedule, ask which year- and market-specific source supports each interval and task. The handbook capacity table cannot answer how often to change oil or coolant, and a broad workshop index cannot supply a schedule merely by listing procedures. If the car has been maintained in another market or has an incomplete history, have the specialist reconcile the vehicle’s documentation and known work before applying an interval. This is more useful than borrowing intervals from a different BMW model or assuming that a modern service pattern automatically applies to the S70.

For a planned lay-up, contact the service provider early enough to confirm that they understand the handbook’s three-month threshold and the listed tasks. Tell them the car’s market, year, VIN and storage duration, and share its service history where available. The handbook’s wording “Changing the engine oil while warm and renewing the filter element” is a direct instruction in its lay-up section; its coolant check is separate and includes concentration as well as level. Do not expand that short list into an unsupported all-purpose storage checklist or mistake it for a complete recommissioning procedure when the car returns to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical maintenance record
A concise record helps future owners and technicians distinguish confirmed work from assumptions. For each service, save:
- Service date and odometer reading.
- The task performed, such as engine oil and filter renewal or coolant check.
- Oil, coolant, filter or spark-plug identification, where applicable.
- The documentation or fitment information used for the car.
- Any unresolved specification, repair or follow-up item.
That record is especially useful when a car changes hands, has gaps in its history, or has been stored. It does not replace the applicable BMW schedule or workshop procedure; it gives the next person a reliable starting point.
Keep the record precise about what was actually done. For example, distinguish a coolant level check from coolant replacement, and distinguish a parts quote from an installed part. When the exact fluid or component cannot be confirmed, mark it as unknown rather than assigning a specification after the fact. This makes the next technician’s decisions clearer and prevents a future owner from treating an unverified entry as proof of service.
Sources and scope
The model-specific capacity and spark-plug references above come from BMW AG’s 1994 edition of the BMW E31 Owner’s Manual 840ci 850ci 850csi. The storage guidance comes from its care and maintenance section. E31 workshop documentation identifies oil-and-filter and S70 cooling-system procedures, while BMW’s parts catalog identifies the E31 850CSi/S70 pairing. These references do not establish a complete current maintenance schedule, modern fluid specifications, prices, or reliability statistics.
