Download a CarPlay-compatible app from the App Store, connect the iPhone to a supported vehicle, and the app can appear automatically in CarPlay. You can then arrange the app list from the iPhone.
You do not install apps from the CarPlay screen. Install the app on your iPhone from the App Store, connect the iPhone to CarPlay, and then open or arrange the app on the vehicle display. Only apps that support CarPlay can appear in CarPlay Home; downloading any ordinary iPhone app does not make it available in the car.

Before you begin
- Use a compatible iPhone. iPad and iPod touch do not support CarPlay.
- Check the car or stereo. CarPlay support varies by vehicle, model year, country or region, and aftermarket stereo. Verify the exact vehicle or head-unit model in the Apple CarPlay compatibility list and your vehicle manual rather than relying only on the manufacturer’s name.
- Update the software. Apple recommends the latest iOS on the iPhone and the latest software or firmware available for the vehicle or aftermarket stereo.
- Know which connection you have. Your car may support wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, or both.
- Enable Siri. Siri is required for CarPlay. Check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Settings > Siri, depending on your iOS version and region.
How to install an app for Apple CarPlay
1. Download the app on your iPhone
On the iPhone, open the App Store. Search for the app you want, review its listing, and tap Get or the price button. Authenticate if prompted, then wait for the installation to finish.
The app is installed on the iPhone—not in the vehicle. CarPlay does not have a separate App Store, and you should not expect to find one among the icons on the car’s display.

2. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay
For wired CarPlay
- Start the vehicle.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s USB port marked with a CarPlay symbol or smartphone icon. Some vehicles have multiple USB ports, but only one may support CarPlay.
- Accept any prompts on the iPhone and vehicle display.
Use a suitable data cable, not a cable intended only for charging. The correct cable depends on the iPhone connector and the vehicle’s USB port. For example, a vehicle with USB-A may require a compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable when paired with a USB-C iPhone. Apple provides additional wired CarPlay cable guidance.
For wireless CarPlay
- Put the vehicle in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode according to its manual.
- Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on the iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle when it appears and complete the pairing prompts.
Keep the iPhone’s Wi-Fi enabled after pairing. If the vehicle’s CarPlay network is listed in Wi-Fi settings, make sure Auto-Join is enabled. The exact pairing sequence varies between vehicle manufacturers.
Apple’s CarPlay connection instructions cover both wired and wireless setup.
3. Open CarPlay Home
Once the connection is established, CarPlay may open automatically. If it does not, select the CarPlay logo or the CarPlay source on the vehicle’s infotainment screen.
If the newly installed app supports CarPlay, it should appear automatically on CarPlay Home. Check additional Home-screen pages if you do not see it immediately; apps may be arranged across more than one page.
4. Move the app where you want it
You can arrange compatible CarPlay apps from the iPhone:

- Tap your vehicle.
- Tap Customize.
- Drag apps to change their order.
- Tap the delete control beside an eligible app to remove it from CarPlay.
- Under More Apps, tap the add control to restore an eligible app.
The revised arrangement takes effect the next time the iPhone connects to CarPlay. Removing an app from CarPlay does not necessarily uninstall it from the iPhone; it changes whether the app is shown in the CarPlay interface.

What apps work with CarPlay?
CarPlay does not mirror the entire iPhone. Apple allows supported app experiences designed for use in a vehicle. Common categories include:
- Audio, music, podcasts, and other listening apps
- Navigation and mapping
- Messaging and voice calling
- Electric-vehicle charging and fueling
- Parking
- Quick food ordering
- Driving-focused tools
- Selected vehicle-manufacturer apps
Developers must support CarPlay and obtain the appropriate Apple entitlements for the relevant category. An ordinary iPhone app cannot be forced onto the CarPlay display through a setting or downloaded onto the vehicle. Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation explains the supported framework and app experiences.
Why an installed app may not appear
The app does not support CarPlay
This is the most likely explanation. Check the app’s App Store listing or the developer’s documentation for CarPlay support. Installing an app on the iPhone alone is not enough.
Some apps can still be used through Siri without displaying a full CarPlay icon. Apple gives examples such as Reminders, Clock, and Weather. That is Siri access to an iPhone app, not installation of that app in CarPlay Home.

The app is hidden in CarPlay settings
With the vehicle parked, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Customize. Look under More Apps and check whether the app was removed from the visible list. Add it or drag it into the desired position.
The app, iPhone, or vehicle software is outdated
Update the app from the App Store and install any available iOS update. Also check the vehicle or stereo manufacturer’s instructions for infotainment firmware updates. Compatibility and menu labels can change with software versions.
Wired CarPlay is not connecting reliably
- Try the vehicle’s designated CarPlay USB port rather than another charging port.
- Try a different known-good data cable.
- Inspect the cable and the iPhone port for damage or debris.
- Connect directly to the vehicle instead of using a chain of adapters or hubs.
Apple notes that some adapter, cable, and vehicle combinations can interfere with wired CarPlay. If you need a replacement, choose an Apple CarPlay USB cable only after matching the iPhone connector to the vehicle’s USB-A or USB-C port. A cable can solve a connection problem; it does not install apps or add CarPlay to an incompatible vehicle.
Wireless CarPlay is not connecting
Confirm that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, that the correct vehicle is selected under Settings > General > CarPlay, and that the vehicle’s CarPlay Wi-Fi network has Auto-Join enabled. Keep the phone near the vehicle during the initial pairing and follow the car’s pairing instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you install any iPhone app on CarPlay?
No. CarPlay is intentionally limited to approved, driving-oriented interfaces. Do not sideload unsupported apps, jailbreak the iPhone, or use screen-mirroring workarounds as though they were official installation methods. They may create safety, reliability, compatibility, or warranty problems and are not required for the normal CarPlay setup.
Video is a separate case. Apple describes video apps as a supported category for eligible vehicles when parked; that does not make video a general way to display any iPhone app while driving. Use navigation, audio, calls, messages, and Siri in the manner intended by the vehicle and app.

What if the car does not have CarPlay?
Software cannot add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks compatible hardware. Depending on the car, an aftermarket CarPlay stereo or head unit may be an option. Apple lists aftermarket systems from brands including Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony, but brand-level compatibility is not enough to guarantee a fit.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before buying, verify the exact vehicle year and trim, dashboard fit, wiring harnesses, steering-wheel controls, backup-camera integration, USB location, and whether the unit supports wired or wireless CarPlay. Professional installation may be appropriate where the vehicle requires custom trim, wiring, or camera integration.
Quick answer
Install the app from the iPhone’s App Store, connect the iPhone to a CarPlay-compatible vehicle, and look for the app on CarPlay Home. If it is missing, confirm that the app specifically supports CarPlay, then check Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Customize. There is no App Store on the CarPlay display, and unsupported iPhone apps cannot be added to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install apps directly from the Apple CarPlay screen?
No. CarPlay does not have its own App Store. Download apps on the iPhone, then compatible apps can appear on CarPlay when the phone connects to a supported vehicle.
Why does an iPhone app not show up in CarPlay?
Only if the developer has added CarPlay support and Apple has approved the relevant CarPlay entitlement. Ordinary iPhone apps cannot be forced onto CarPlay Home.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I add an app back to my CarPlay screen?
Yes, but the app must support CarPlay. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, select your vehicle, tap Customize, and add it from More Apps if it is listed.
Does removing an app from CarPlay delete it from my iPhone?
No. You can remove an app from the CarPlay list without uninstalling it from the iPhone. The app remains on the phone unless you delete it separately.
The Bottom Line
The official workflow is: download the app on the iPhone, connect to CarPlay, and customize the compatible app list from the iPhone. If an app still does not appear, it probably lacks CarPlay support—or the connection, restriction, software, or vehicle compatibility needs attention.
