Treat any warning sign as a reason to ask questions or arrange a professional inspection—not as proof of a particular fault. The 2018 Tiago manual is useful context for cars covered by that edition, but the individual car’s year, variant and condition must be verified separately.
1. Verify the car’s identity and documents first
Before negotiating or paying, compare the chassis and engine identifiers on the vehicle with the Registration Certificate (RC). Check that the registration details agree with the seller’s account, and look for a hypothecation entry that may indicate an outstanding loan. Ask to see current insurance and Pollution Under Control (PUC) documents. You can independently check registration details through the government vehicle lookup service linked from the inspection guide. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for matching the records.
Ownership transfer and insurance transfer are separate tasks. Check the relevant state or RTO process for transferring registration; requirements can vary, and the applicable steps for your location should be confirmed before purchase. For insurance, the IRDAI motor-insurance guidance says the seller should notify the insurer in writing and that a fresh proposal form is required. It also says a comprehensive or package policy’s ownership transfer must be recorded within 14 days of the transfer for own-damage claims to be payable. Confirm the current policy and process with the insurer, and keep the registration and insurance ownership details aligned.
2. Look for body-repair and flood clues
Inspect the car in good light. Look across the doors, bonnet and tailgate for uneven panel gaps, and compare adjacent panels for paint that differs in shade or finish. Check for rust, especially on the boot floor and door sills. Consider the car’s location history when assessing possible flood exposure. These are clues to investigate, not conclusive proof of a collision, repair or flood damage.

A paint-thickness gauge can help identify filler or repainting that may be difficult to see. A reading cannot explain the full repair history or establish whether structural damage exists. If a panel or repair looks suspicious, ask a qualified inspector to assess it.
3. Check mileage against service evidence
Compare the odometer reading with dated service-book entries and invoices. The timeline should make sense for the car’s age and apparent use. Ask the seller to explain missing periods, inconsistent entries or a reading that seems implausibly low. None of these checks alone proves odometer tampering; they help you decide whether the mileage is supported by records. The inspection checklist recommends treating gaps and inconsistencies as reasons for concern.

Tata’s Tiago manual recommends scheduled maintenance and authorized service, and the 2018 manual copy lists service-related records among the vehicle documentation. Use the manual and maintenance schedule for the specific car’s year and variant rather than assuming a 2018 document covers every Tiago.
4. Check the engine and basic operation
Arrange a cold start if practical
Ask to see the car before it has been warmed up. On starting, observe whether the engine starts and idles smoothly, and watch for excessive smoke or listen for unusual noises. A cold start can reveal symptoms that may be less apparent once the engine is warm, but it does not establish that the car is mechanically sound.

Look for leaks and fluid concerns
Look for fresh oil or fluid stains around the engine and beneath the car. If checking oil or coolant levels, follow safe procedures and do not touch hot components. Milky-looking oil or contaminated coolant warrants stopping the inspection and asking a mechanic to diagnose the cause; either appearance is a warning sign, not a diagnosis by itself.
The 2018 Tiago-AMT-OMSB Rev03 manual copy includes pre-driving checks and sections on maintenance, engine oil, battery, tyres and the AMT gearbox. It says: “Always carry out prescribed service / maintenance work as well as any required repairs at an authorized TATA MOTORS Dealers or Authorized Service Centre’s (TASCs). Use only genuine parts for continued reliability, safety and performance.” This is guidance from that manual edition, not confirmation of current recall status or the correct procedure for every model year and variant. If records or symptoms raise questions, ask a Tata service centre or qualified mechanic to inspect the car against the appropriate schedule.

5. Inspect tyres, equipment and road behavior
Tyres and suspension
Check the tyres for uneven wear and inspect the spare. Uneven wear can justify checking alignment or suspension condition, but it does not identify a cause on its own. As a basic screening check, press down at each corner and observe whether the car settles promptly. This is not a substitute for inspecting the suspension and underbody on a lift.
Electrical equipment
Operate the windows, central locking, air conditioning, infotainment system and lights. Check each item rather than assuming that equipment works because it is present.

Safe test drive
On a safe route, pay attention to steering pull, braking noise or pull, suspension clunks over bumps, clutch bite point and gear changes. If the Tiago has an AMT, check that shifts behave smoothly. Warning lights, delayed shifts or abnormal behavior are reasons to have the transmission assessed rather than guessing at the cause.
6. Choose the right level of professional inspection
A DIY check can help you identify obvious concerns, but it cannot provide the same access or diagnosis as an independent mechanic or a paid pre-purchase inspection. Compare options by what the inspector will actually do, not just by the service name.
| Inspection option | Useful for | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| DIY visual and road check | Initial screening of documents, visible body condition, equipment and symptoms on a drive. | It does not establish hidden structural condition, underbody state or diagnostic-code history. |
| Independent mechanic | Mechanical questions or symptoms that need a qualified assessment. | Ask whether the mechanic can inspect the underbody, scan for stored engine codes and road-test the car; scope depends on the mechanic and available equipment. |
| Paid inspection service | A broader pre-purchase assessment, potentially including paint-thickness checks, a scan for stored engine codes and a written report. | Confirm exact tests, underbody access, road-test scope, report format and that the inspector is independent of the seller. |
True Motion Auto’s India guide, updated August 2026, quotes an indicative pre-purchase inspection range of ₹1,500–₹4,000, depending on city and inspection depth. This is a secondary publisher’s quoted range, not an official rate or a fixed current offer; confirm local availability and the actual price directly with a provider.
When to pause the purchase
- The identifiers or registration details do not match, or the seller cannot resolve a hypothecation or ownership discrepancy.
- Body, paint, rust or boot-floor clues raise unanswered questions about repairs or possible flood exposure.
- Mileage does not align with dated records and the seller cannot provide a credible explanation.
- A cold start, leak, fluid appearance, warning light or road-test symptom needs diagnosis before you can judge the car.
- You cannot assess a concern yourself; arrange an independent inspection and review its findings before deciding.
No single visual check, document or test drive proves a used Tiago is sound. Base the decision on the car’s records and observed condition, and get qualified help where a concern needs diagnosis.
