How to Inspect a Used Range Rover’s Air Suspension, Electronics, and V8

Identify the vehicle by VIN, then inspect its suspension, electronics, engine-specific clues and maintenance evidence. L322 V8 checks apply only to the relevant variants.

Before inspecting a used Range Rover, identify its generation, model year, market and exact engine from the VIN. The detailed checks below apply chiefly to the L322, sold from 2002 to 2012; its engine-specific concerns are not a fault list for every Range Rover V8. For any generation, combine a careful viewing and road test with maintenance records, VIN-specific recall checks and a technician’s diagnostic inspection.

Start with the exact vehicle and its records

“Range Rover V8” is not a precise enough description for an engine inspection. Generations, engines, equipment and specifications vary. Use the VIN to identify the vehicle and consult owner information that matches its market and specification. Land Rover’s iGuide provides VIN-based information; browsing by model and year can show derivatives or options that a particular vehicle does not have.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This matters throughout the inspection, not just when reading the engine section. A feature shown in a generic model-year guide may not be fitted to the car you are viewing, while a vehicle’s market and specification affect which owner information is relevant. Confirm the identity from the VIN and the vehicle’s documentation, then check that the engine and equipment described by the seller match. If the seller’s description, records and VIN-based information do not line up, resolve that discrepancy before relying on a model-specific checklist.

Ask for service evidence before you travel

Request invoices and maintenance records, with particular attention to suspension, compressor and engine work. For vehicles from 2013 onwards, Land Rover describes its Online Service History as a permanent record of maintenance and services, including upcoming service needs. Do not assume that portal covers older vehicles: ask the seller for their invoices and other records.

When reviewing paperwork, look for what work was actually performed, when it was done and which vehicle or system the invoice describes. A seller’s verbal statement that the compressor, suspension or engine has been “done” is less useful than an invoice that identifies the work. Record gaps as gaps rather than assuming the work was completed. Conversely, an invoice is evidence of past work, not proof that a system is functioning correctly today; the vehicle still needs to pass the operational checks and any specialist assessment.

Ask specifically whether there has been suspension work, compressor inspection or replacement, coolant loss or overheating, engine work, roof-seam repair, or water ingress. These questions connect the paperwork to the areas that need closer inspection. A complete history makes the vehicle easier to assess, but it cannot rule out an intermittent fault or a problem that has developed since the last service.

Check recalls by VIN and market

Use the official recall resource for the vehicle’s market and check the VIN. Land Rover USA says its lookup covers recalls issued in the previous 15 years for vehicles from the 1995 model year onwards. That is the scope of that US lookup, not evidence that an older vehicle has no recalls. If the vehicle falls outside the page’s stated coverage, contact the appropriate Land Rover customer service channel for its market. Ask for evidence that applicable recall work was completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a search result from one market as a universal recall answer. The vehicle’s market matters, and the US page’s stated time range is a limit on that particular lookup. Record the VIN, the resource checked and any outstanding question. If a recall appears applicable, ask the seller for evidence of rectification or confirm the status with the relevant Land Rover channel before purchase.

Inspect the air suspension while the vehicle is stationary

Carry out the height checks on level ground. First establish which height settings the specific vehicle offers; on the L322, Autocar’s buying guide recommends checking that it moves through its three settings without abnormal noise. Allow yourself time to watch the vehicle rather than simply pressing the controls and assuming that a change in height means the system is healthy.

  1. Check the setting and starting position. Confirm which height settings the car offers and make sure the vehicle is on level ground. This gives you a consistent view of whether the body rises or lowers evenly. Do not compare operation with a different generation or specification without first confirming what the vehicle is equipped to do.
  2. Operate each available setting. Watch the body as it moves. Note whether the vehicle responds to each selected setting and whether the movement appears even. On the L322, check the three height settings described in the buying guide. A setting that does not work as expected merits investigation, but it does not identify a failed part.
  3. Listen while it moves. The L322 recommendation is for the height changes to occur without abnormal noise. Note when a noise occurs—during raising, lowering or at another point—and tell the technician. A sound during operation is a symptom to investigate, not a standalone diagnosis.
  4. Look at the air bellows. Check for visible damage or signs of leakage. The inspection is visual, so do not conclude that the system is sound just because no damage is obvious. If something looks suspect, ask a specialist to inspect it.
  5. Observe the vehicle after parking. Watch for a corner or the whole vehicle settling. If it sinks, note where and when you observed it and arrange diagnosis. Settling can indicate that further inspection is needed; it does not by itself establish which component is responsible.
  6. Review compressor paperwork. Ask for workshop bills documenting compressor inspection, repair or replacement, if any. Note whether records exist and what they say. A documented repair is useful history, but it does not replace checking current operation.

The point of these checks is to identify evidence that needs explanation, not to name a part from a brief viewing. Do not infer that a compressor, air spring or valve block has failed from noise, uneven movement or a vehicle that settles. Several possible causes require proper diagnosis, and the research-supported check is to have a Land Rover specialist inspect the system and explain what testing supports the diagnosis.

If the seller says a symptom is normal, ask whether it can be demonstrated and whether any workshop has assessed it. If there are compressor records, compare them with what you observe. If there are no records, do not assume that the compressor has never needed work or that it necessarily needs replacement. Keep the observation and the unanswered diagnostic question separate.

Test the electronics and look for signs of water ingress

Operate the equipment, not just the dashboard

Try every switch, button and electrical feature fitted to the car. A normal-looking dashboard does not establish that all systems work, and an intermittent problem may not appear while the vehicle is stationary. Make a note of anything that fails, behaves inconsistently or displays a warning.

Work methodically around the cabin and any other accessible controls so that you do not mistake an untested feature for a working one. Establish what equipment is actually fitted to this specification, then operate each item. For each problem, record what you pressed, what happened and whether the behaviour was repeatable. This gives the technician something more useful to investigate than a general report that “the electrics are fine” or “there is a warning.”

Request diagnostic scans before and after the drive

Ask a technician to scan the car before the road test and again afterwards. Have them record the codes and explain which are current and which are stored. A warning that has been cleared is not proof that its underlying cause has been fixed; Autocar recommends checking again after the drive because some faults can return.

Use the two scans as a comparison. Ask which codes were present before the drive, whether any new ones appeared afterwards and whether a previously observed warning returned. A scan is evidence to interpret, not a complete diagnosis on its own: ask the technician to explain the codes in context and what further inspection, if any, is warranted. If the seller reports that a warning was recently cleared, make sure that claim does not substitute for a post-drive check.

A suitable JLR-compatible scan tool may help, but compatibility depends on model year and control modules. Unless you can interpret the results and verify coverage, a professional inspection is the safer option. No particular scanner brand is established here as the right choice. If you are considering a tool, verify its compatibility with the specific vehicle rather than assuming that a device described as JLR-compatible will support every year and module.

A Land Rover specialist pre-purchase inspection is useful alongside the scan, particularly when the results include codes that need interpretation or when symptoms involve the suspension, engine or electrical systems. Ask the specialist to evaluate the relevant systems and explain the evidence behind any recommended work. A scan tool can support that inspection; it should not be treated as a replacement for it.

Check the L322 Westminster boot and audio controls

For an L322 Westminster, inspect the boot and audio controls for water-related damage and ask whether roof-seam repairs or leaks have occurred. Autocar’s workshop manager describes rain entering at roof seams and running down the left side of the boot, where it could damage the audio control system. This is a generation- and trim-specific check, not a claim that all Range Rovers share the issue.

Look for signs of water-related damage in the boot and test the audio controls rather than assuming they work because the dashboard has no warning. Ask whether the roof seams have been repaired or whether leaks have been reported, then compare the answer with available repair paperwork. Tony Hooper, workshop manager at Hereford 4X4, advised: “If you’re buying a Westminster, check there first.” His comment refers to this L322 Westminster roof-seam and boot-water concern; it should not be read as a general warning about every Range Rover or trim.

Match the V8 checks to the engine

Confirm the engine variant from vehicle documentation or VIN-specific information before applying an engine checklist. The L322 guide identifies different checks for its 4.4-litre petrol and 4.2-litre supercharged engines; neither observation should be generalized to all Range Rover V8s. If you cannot verify which engine is fitted, pause before interpreting a symptom against an engine-specific concern.

L322 4.4 petrol: coolant and overheating clues

Check the coolant expansion tank and ask about any history of coolant loss or overheating. Autocar’s guide reports that failed water-jacket housing O-ring seals on the 4.4 petrol can be a cause of overheating and coolant leaking into the gearbox. A low coolant level, evidence of leaks or a history of overheating warrants specialist investigation; it does not, by itself, confirm that these seals have failed.

Ask the seller directly whether the vehicle has overheated or lost coolant and whether any related work is documented. Compare the answer with the service invoices and what you can observe at the expansion tank. If the evidence raises concern, arrange specialist assessment before deciding what the symptom means. The reported seal issue is a possible cause in the 4.4 petrol, not a diagnosis to make from a brief viewing and not a universal fault claim about every V8.

L322 4.2 supercharged: listen at idle

With the engine running at idle, listen for a rattle from the supercharger. Treat an unusual noise as a reason to have the engine assessed by a specialist, rather than diagnosing the component by ear during a viewing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure the observation really applies to the 4.2 supercharged engine before relying on this check. Note whether a rattle is present at idle and describe it to the specialist. The guide calls out the idle rattle check; it does not establish a failure rate or show that every noise comes from the supercharger. A quiet engine during a short inspection is also only one observation, not a substitute for records and a professional assessment if other concerns exist.

Exhaust condition

The L322 guide also flags exhaust wear and the possibility of catalytic-converter breakup. Look and listen for visible exhaust damage or abnormal exhaust noise, and have concerns investigated before purchase. The guide does not establish a failure rate or a repair-cost average for these issues.

  • Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices

Include exhaust condition in the inspection rather than treating the V8 checks as limited to the engine bay. If you see damage or hear an abnormal noise, report the specific observation to the specialist and ask what examination is needed. Do not estimate a repair bill from the observation alone; neither a typical cost nor a prevalence figure is established here.

Use the road test to check how the car behaves

Drive the vehicle only with the seller’s permission and appropriate insurance. Pay attention to warnings and changes in behaviour, and record what happens rather than trying to diagnose it at the roadside. A road test adds evidence that a static inspection may miss, but it does not replace a technician’s scan before and after the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Watch the dashboard. Note any warning that appears, changes or returns. Record when it happens, especially if it is accompanied by a change in vehicle behaviour. A warning is a reason for diagnosis, not proof of a particular failed part.
  • Assess the gear changes. Notice whether changes are reluctant or harsh. Autocar’s L322 guide specifically flags stubborn gearbox changes accompanied by dashboard lights. Record both the shift behaviour and any warning rather than describing either in isolation.
  • Listen under braking. The guide identifies front wishbone knocks under braking as an L322 check. Note the conditions under which a knock occurs and ask for an inspection rather than assuming its cause.
  • Listen over bumps. The guide also identifies rear hub-bush clonks over bumps. Record whether you heard a clonk and when it occurred; have the relevant area checked by a specialist.
  • Recheck the electrical features. Check that the controls and electrical features you tried while stationary continue to work. If something becomes intermittent, tell the technician and include it in the post-drive assessment.
  • Notice the suspension. Pay attention to how it behaves on the road and whether an abnormal noise or warning appears. Describe what you experienced without assuming the road test identifies a failed suspension component.

Do not dismiss a symptom because it happens only once, and do not assume a dashboard warning identifies the failed part. Include the observation in the post-drive diagnostic assessment. The before-and-after scans are particularly useful when a fault can return after driving, so keep them connected to the road-test notes instead of reviewing them as unrelated paperwork.

Inspect the body and underside

Look under the vehicle for evidence of off-road damage, and inspect the tailgate for rust or other damage. These checks complement the mechanical inspection: visible damage is a reason to ask what happened and whether repairs were made, not a substitute for a technician’s assessment.

Ask the seller about visible damage and any repair history, then compare the answer with what can be seen and any invoices. Avoid assuming that a vehicle has or has not been off-road based only on its appearance. The useful result of this check is a record of condition and any unanswered repair questions for a specialist to assess.

Compare candidates by evidence, not by a made-up score

If you are choosing between two vehicles, compare like with like where possible: generation, year, market and V8 variant. There is no established numerical scoring rubric for these checks, so keep a written record of observed symptoms, documents and questions that remain open. A side-by-side record helps distinguish a documented repair from a reassuring claim, and a demonstrated symptom from an assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to compare Evidence to record What remains unresolved
Vehicle identity VIN, generation, model year, market and confirmed engine variant Whether the records or equipment match the individual vehicle
Maintenance and recalls Invoices, service history and evidence of completed applicable recall work Any gaps in the records or recall status that still need confirmation
Air suspension Height-setting operation, noise, visible bellows condition, settling and compressor records The cause and scope of any abnormal behaviour until a specialist diagnoses it
Electronics Results from equipment checks and diagnostic scans before and after the drive Whether a code is current, stored, intermittent or linked to a verified fault
Engine and cooling Engine variant, coolant condition, overheating history and any relevant noise or exhaust concern The diagnosis and repair implications of any symptom
Road and body condition Gear-change behaviour, warnings, knocks, underside condition and tailgate condition The repair scope and cost, if inspection finds a fault

When comparing two vehicles, use the same sequence for each: confirm identity and engine, review the same categories of records, operate the suspension, test the electrical equipment, take diagnostic scans before and after the drive, and note the road-test and body observations. That makes the comparison more meaningful without pretending the checks produce a universal grade. If one car has clearer invoices or a completed repair record, record that evidence; if another has an unresolved warning or settling, record the issue and the diagnosis still needed.

A candidate with clearer records and no unresolved symptoms is easier to assess than one whose history or behaviour remains unexplained. Do not turn that observation into a guarantee: a clean viewing cannot establish that a complex vehicle has no hidden faults. Nor should an unverified symptom automatically become a fixed repair estimate. Ask a specialist what inspection is required and what conclusion the available evidence supports.

When to pause the purchase

Arrange a specialist pre-purchase inspection before committing if the suspension does not operate normally, the vehicle settles while parked, the electronics show faults, the engine has coolant loss or overheating history, or the road test reveals abnormal noises or gear changes. Ask the specialist to inspect the relevant system, interpret diagnostic codes and state what evidence supports any proposed repair. If the seller will not permit reasonable checks or provide available records, treat that as an unresolved purchase risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

There is no sourced failure-rate percentage or average repair cost for the concerns listed here. That means the inspection should lead to a diagnosis and a vehicle-specific repair discussion, not an invented probability or blanket price. Before proceeding, make sure you understand which observations have been verified, which remain uncertain, and what further work the specialist recommends. If the evidence is incomplete, the decision is whether to investigate further or accept that uncertainty—not to treat missing information as proof that everything is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before buying a used Range Rover?

Identify the vehicle by VIN, generation, market and engine; review service and recall records; operate the available air-suspension settings and look for noise, visible bellows damage or settling; test every fitted electrical feature; and arrange diagnostic scans before and after a road test. The detailed engine-specific checks here apply to the L322, not every Range Rover.

How can I tell whether a used Range Rover’s air suspension is faulty?

On level ground, operate each height setting and watch for even movement, listen for abnormal noise, inspect the bellows and observe whether the vehicle settles after parking. These are signs to investigate, not a way to identify a failed compressor, air spring or valve block. Ask a Land Rover specialist to diagnose any abnormal behaviour.

Should I buy a Range Rover if a warning light has been cleared?

A cleared warning does not prove that its cause has been fixed. Ask a technician to record diagnostic codes before and after the road test, explain which are current or stored and check whether faults return. Treat the codes as evidence for a diagnosis, not a complete diagnosis by themselves.

Are the 4.4 petrol and 4.2 supercharged V8 checks the same?

No. For the L322, the buying guide flags possible water-jacket housing O-ring seal failure as a cause of overheating and coolant leaking into the gearbox on the 4.4 petrol. For the 4.2 supercharged engine, it recommends listening for a rattle at idle. Confirm the engine first and have symptoms assessed by a specialist; these observations are not universal V8 faults.

Does Land Rover’s Online Service History cover every used Range Rover?

Land Rover describes Online Service History as applying to vehicles from 2013 onwards, with a permanent record of maintenance and services and upcoming service needs. For older vehicles, ask the seller for invoices and other records rather than assuming the portal covers them.

How should I check recalls on a used Range Rover?

Use the official recall resource for the vehicle’s market and enter its VIN. Land Rover USA says its lookup covers recalls issued in the last 15 years for vehicles from the 1995 model year onwards; that limit applies to that US lookup and does not show that older vehicles have no recalls. Ask the relevant Land Rover channel about coverage outside the stated range and request evidence of completed applicable work.

The Bottom Line

Identify the vehicle by VIN, then inspect it systematically: check records and recalls, exercise the air suspension, test every electrical feature, obtain diagnostic scans before and after the drive, and match V8 checks to the actual engine. The specific 4.4 petrol and 4.2 supercharged concerns described here are L322 guidance, not universal Range Rover faults. Treat symptoms as reasons for specialist diagnosis, not instant parts diagnoses or repair-cost estimates.
