Inspect the specific truck, not just the Ram badge: confirm its VIN and configuration, review its records and recall status, then have an independent mechanic examine it and provide a written report with repair estimates before you buy. A vehicle-history report, dealer inspection, or diagnostic-code scan cannot replace that mechanical inspection.
Before you go see the truck
- Get the identifying details. Ask for the VIN, model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, mileage, title status, and a list of modifications. When you see the truck, confirm the VIN matches the windshield and door-label information.
- Ask how it was used. Find out whether it was a personal, fleet, or commercial vehicle and whether it regularly towed, hauled, went off-road, or idled for long periods. Treat the seller’s answer as a claim until records and inspection support it.
- Review the history and maintenance evidence. Compare the seller’s account with the title, ownership, accident, salvage, and mileage information in a vehicle-history report. Ask for service invoices and compare their dates and mileage; a verbal summary is harder to verify. A clean history report does not prove the truck has no damage or mechanical problems. The FTC explains that a history report is not a substitute for an independent inspection.
- Check recalls by VIN. Search the truck in the NHTSA recall lookup and Mopar’s recall lookup. The NHTSA tool reports unrepaired recalls associated with the VIN. If one appears open, ask the seller or an authorized dealer for its status and repair documentation; safety-recall remedies are generally completed without charge. Do not infer one truck’s recall status from another Ram with a similar year or configuration. Mopar’s recall FAQ describes historical campaigns affecting selected Ram models and configurations, not the status of the truck you are considering.
- Verify any CPO claim. If the truck is advertised as Ram Certified Pre-Owned, request its inspection record, history report, and actual warranty contract. Ram’s published CPO program describes a 125-point inspection and safety review, a vehicle-history report, and a Maximum Care Limited Warranty listed as 3 months or 3,000 miles with a $100 deductible. Confirm the truck’s eligibility and the coverage, exclusions, duration, and deductible in the paperwork for that vehicle.
What to check in person
Look at the truck in daylight on level ground. Your walk-around can flag questions for the mechanic; it cannot establish the condition of hidden components.

- Body and underbody: Look for inconsistent paint, uneven panel gaps, mismatched glass or lights, corrosion, fluid leaks, and signs of repair. Check for visible damage around the frame and hitch area.
- Tires, wheels, and brakes: Note whether tires match, whether the tread is uneven, and whether there is visible damage or little tread remaining. A visual glance is not enough to judge brake or suspension condition; ask the mechanic to assess wear and components.
- Cabin and equipment: Test the controls, warning lights, HVAC, windows, locks, cameras, and other equipment fitted to that truck. Compare the odometer reading with service records and the wear visible inside.
- Records: Ask to see invoices, not only a list of claimed maintenance. Ask about overdue service and recent repairs, then check whether the dates and mileage make sense.
Arrange an independent inspection and road test
Choose an independent mechanic yourself, ideally one familiar with the truck’s engine and drivetrain. The FTC distinguishes a mechanical inspection from a safety inspection and recommends an independent inspection even when a dealer says a vehicle was certified or inspected. Ask the shop what its inspection includes and what it costs; get the scope in writing, then request a written report with estimated repair costs.
Ask the mechanic to tailor the inspection to the truck’s exact year, engine, drivetrain, modifications, and history. A useful scope includes the engine, transmission, steering, suspension, brakes, frame and underbody, leaks, corrosion, tires, electrical systems, and evidence of collision repair. Ram’s CPO description also identifies areas including the wheels, undercarriage, engine, and steering. For a 4×4, ask for the transfer case and available drive modes to be checked. For a truck that towed or hauled, ask the mechanic to assess the hitch, wiring, cooling, and drivetrain in light of its use. This is a practical scope to discuss with the mechanic, not a factory checklist or a claim that every Ram has the same faults.

- Round mirror size: 2 inches in diameter
- Telescopes from 9. 5 - 28. 5 inches
- 5-section stainless steel shaft
- Comfortable textured cushion grip
During a safe road test, pay attention to starting, warning lights, unusual noise or vibration, steering, braking, transmission behavior, and fitted features. Ask the mechanic to scan for diagnostic trouble codes and explain what they mean. A consumer code reader can help a technically capable buyer, but a code scan is not a full inspection; equipment and procedures vary by model year. Consult the correct truck’s official manual. Ram owner-manual material for 2009–2018 models describes OBD II; see the Ram OBD II reference.
If a dealer will not let the truck leave the lot, ask whether it will permit a mobile inspector or an inspection by a shop you choose on-site. The FTC says refusal to allow an independent inspection is a reason to consider another seller.

How to compare more than one Ram
Compare the trucks against the work you need them to do. A Ram 1500 and a 2500 or 3500 can differ in engine, drivetrain, suspension, towing setup, and prior workload; there is no basis here for declaring one engine or generation universally best. Use the exact configuration and the mechanic’s findings to judge suitability.

What the available Ram-specific evidence does—and does not—tell you
“Ram” covers multiple truck classes, generations, engines, and configurations. A problem associated with one particular setup should not be treated as a diagnosis for every Ram. No dependable model-year-by-model-year failure ranking or cross-generation Ram reliability rate is established here. Identify the exact truck, check its VIN, review its records, and have a mechanic assess that specific configuration.

NHTSA reports 997 recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles nationally in 2025; this is an all-vehicle U.S. figure, not a Ram-specific rate. It is not a substitute for checking the truck’s VIN. The FTC’s 2018 review of more than 2,325 vehicles in 20 cities found that almost half displayed the revised Buyer’s Guide; that historical compliance finding is neither a current rate nor specific to Ram. See NHTSA’s vehicle safety resources and the FTC’s 2018 review.
If buying from a dealer in the United States, read the Buyer’s Guide to see whether the truck is sold as-is or with a warranty. Get any promises about repairs or coverage in writing, as the FTC dealer guidance advises.
