To improve an electric car’s range in summer highway driving, reduce the energy spent pushing through air and cooling a heat-soaked cabin: keep a steady, legal speed, remove unused exterior racks, pre-cool the car while it is plugged in, and park in shade when possible. Keep tires at the pressure specified by the vehicle maker, and use the car’s trip estimate to plan a charging reserve. There is no reliable universal percentage for the combined effect of heat and highway speed; the result depends on the vehicle, route, weather, load, and settings.

Why heat and highway driving affect EV range

Two different energy demands are at work. At highway speeds, aerodynamic drag—the force of air resisting the car’s motion—rises rapidly as speed increases. A roof box, rack, or other external accessory adds drag, and open windows can also increase it. In hot weather, the climate system uses energy to cool the cabin, while the vehicle may also need energy for battery thermal management. The size of these demands varies by car and conditions, so their effects should not be combined as if they were fixed, independent penalties.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These factors also affect a trip in different ways. Speed, windows, and exterior accessories influence the air the vehicle has to move through while it is driving. Cabin preconditioning and a sunshade address heat that builds up while the car is parked; they do not remove highway aerodynamic drag. Tire pressure and cargo are separate parts of vehicle setup. Thinking in terms of the source of energy use makes it easier to choose a practical action rather than expecting one setting or product to solve every range concern.

Speed remains important in hot weather. A 2024 U.S. Department of Energy analysis says the range impacts from temperature begin to converge as speed increases over 40 mph in the analysis discussed. That is not a universal threshold, nor evidence that faster driving is harmless: aerodynamic demand still increases at higher speeds. The analysis should not be treated as a direct test of hot-weather highway trips. Read the DOE analysis.

What hot-weather range testing tells you—and what it cannot

AAA’s May 1, 2026 study found an 8.5% driving-range loss for the tested EVs at 95°F compared with 75°F. In the same comparison, it reported a 10.4% reduction in EV MPGe, a measure of efficiency. These are separate reported outcomes: range loss describes distance, while MPGe describes efficiency. Neither figure is a guaranteed result for a particular car or trip.

AAA’s automotive engineering team and the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center tested three EVs and three hybrids on a chassis dynamometer. The cabin HVAC was set to 72°F, and the test-cell temperatures were 20°F, 75°F, and 95°F. The limited vehicle sample and controlled laboratory conditions matter when applying the result to real driving. An older AAA hot-weather test reported a 17% range reduction at 95°F with air-conditioning, but it used different vehicles, methods, and comparison conditions. The 2026 result is the more recent consumer reference, not a universal replacement figure. See AAA’s 2026 study details.

The difference between the 8.5% range result and the 10.4% MPGe result is a reason to keep the measures straight, not to treat one as a correction factor for the other. MPGe describes energy efficiency in a standardized format; range is distance under the test conditions. Neither number says exactly how far a particular EV will travel after a particular charge, nor how much range a particular driver will gain by changing a setting.

Heat is only one part of a trip’s energy use. Speed, wind, elevation changes, traffic, passengers and cargo, tires, and vehicle configuration all matter. A hot, windy trip at high speed with a loaded roof rack will not necessarily match a controlled temperature test—or another driver’s experience. The available evidence does not support calculating a combined heat-and-highway penalty by adding a generic heat percentage to a generic speed percentage.

How to prepare before a hot-weather drive

Pre-cool the cabin while plugged in

If you have charging access before departure, use the vehicle’s scheduled departure or cabin preconditioning feature to cool the interior while the car is connected. This can draw some of the initial cooling energy from the grid rather than the traction battery. The available controls and their names vary by make, model, and software version; follow the owner’s manual or support guidance for your vehicle rather than assuming a Tesla-specific instruction applies to every EV.

Pre-cooling is most relevant when the cabin is hot from sitting in the sun and you can connect the car before leaving. It is a convenience as well as an energy-management option: it lets you begin with a cooler cabin without relying entirely on the battery for the initial cooling load. If the car is not plugged in, the feature may still be available, but the energy source and effect can differ; check your vehicle’s instructions and settings rather than assuming it is drawing from the grid.

Limit the heat that builds up while parked

Choose shade where practical. If the car must sit in direct sun, a windshield sunshade—or a shade designed for a glass roof, if the vehicle has one—can reduce solar heating of the parked cabin. Check that any shade fits the vehicle’s glass and does not interfere with required sensors or equipment. A cooler parked cabin may need less energy to bring to a comfortable temperature, but the cited sources do not establish a specific driving-range gain from using a shade.

A shade is a simple, optional physical accessory for the parked-car problem; it is not an on-road range device. Its usefulness depends on the car’s windshield or roof shape and on whether it is practical to install and store. There is no supported universal price or quantified range-saving claim to attach to one. If you are considering a product, check fit and compatibility for the exact vehicle rather than assuming a generic shade will work, especially for a glass roof.

Remove avoidable weight and exterior drag

Before a highway trip, take out cargo you do not need and remove a roof or hitch rack when it is not carrying anything and can safely be removed. External accessories can increase aerodynamic drag, particularly at highway speed. Tesla’s range guidance discusses smooth driving, tire pressure, and reducing unnecessary drag; treat it as an example of manufacturer advice, not a universal model-specific instruction. Tesla Range Tips (United Kingdom).

Consider what is attached to the outside of the car as well as what is inside it. Removing an unused rack is most relevant for a highway journey, where the added drag has more opportunity to matter. If a rack is needed for the trip, keep it; the practical recommendation is to avoid carrying an unnecessary accessory, not to sacrifice the cargo or equipment you actually need. Similarly, reducing unnecessary cargo is sensible, but available evidence does not support assigning a specific number of miles saved to a given amount of weight.

How to drive efficiently on the highway

Choose a steady, legal speed

Higher highway speeds generally require more energy because aerodynamic resistance rises with speed. Driving at a steady, legal pace instead of repeatedly accelerating and braking can help avoid unnecessary energy use. The best pace is not a single number: obey the speed limit and account for traffic, road conditions, and safe following distance. Do not trade safe driving for a range target.

There is no universal “best EV highway speed” in the cited guidance. A useful approach is to avoid driving faster than necessary for the conditions and to maintain a consistent pace when traffic permits. If the route estimate changes as you drive, use that current information to make a safe plan rather than trying to match a speed recommendation that may not fit the road, weather, or legal limit.

Keep windows closed at highway speed

Open windows can disturb airflow and add drag. Tesla recommends keeping windows up and climate control on Auto for its vehicles. That is a manufacturer-specific recommendation, not a rule that every EV driver should turn off air-conditioning. Use the climate controls as the vehicle maker directs, and keep the cabin comfortable and windows clear enough for safe driving, including when defogging is needed.

At highway speeds, closing the windows is a practical way to avoid one source of extra aerodynamic drag. It does not mean driving without cabin cooling. In hot weather, use the climate system as needed for comfort and visibility, and consult the owner’s manual for the controls available in your particular model.

Use climate control thoughtfully, not at the expense of safety

Cooling the cabin takes energy, but switching off air-conditioning is not a universal range prescription. Cabin comfort, safe visibility, passenger needs, and the car’s own climate-management strategy all matter. If the vehicle offers climate modes or temperature settings that maintain comfort efficiently, consult its manual and use those controls. Tesla’s advice to use Auto is an example for Tesla vehicles only.

There is no single AC range-loss percentage supported for every EV. The 2026 AAA result compares performance across test-cell temperatures with cabin HVAC set to 72°F; it is not a test that isolates the effect of turning AC on or off for every car. Avoid turning a study of overall temperature impact into a claim about the precise cost of one climate setting. Prioritize safe visibility and reasonable comfort over a speculative range gain.

Check tires and vehicle setup

Use the tire pressure specified by the vehicle maker, checking it under the conditions and at the intervals described in the owner’s manual. Do not overinflate tires in pursuit of range: more pressure is not automatically better, and the correct value is vehicle-specific. Also remove unnecessary cargo and accessories where practical. These steps reduce avoidable energy demand without relying on an unsupported range-savings estimate.

For range-minded vehicle preparation, “correct pressure” is the goal—not the highest pressure that a tire or gauge permits. Underinflation can add rolling resistance, but available evidence does not endorse a universal pressure target or a pressure increase above the manufacturer’s specification. Plan around the car’s real trip estimate, not its label alone

The EPA range printed for an EV is a standardized combined estimate, not a promise of the distance it will cover on a particular highway trip. EPA combines adjusted city and highway figures using a 55% city and 45% highway weighting. Its testing program includes a 95°F cabin-cooling cycle and a high-speed cycle, and adjusts laboratory results for real-world factors. The combined label still is not an individual driver’s highway-range prediction. EPA fuel economy and EV range testing.

The label is useful for comparing vehicles on a standardized basis, but it is not a substitute for route-specific planning. A particular trip may involve sustained highway speeds, wind, elevation, a heavy load, or hot conditions that differ from the standardized test mix. For that reason, multiplying the EPA combined figure by a universal “highway factor” is not a reliable way to predict the range of your own drive.

For a specific journey, use the vehicle’s route planner or energy display, which can account for the route and current conditions more directly than multiplying the EPA combined figure by a generic highway percentage. Check the estimate before leaving and monitor energy use as you drive. Allow a practical charging reserve appropriate to your route, weather, charging access, and comfort with uncertainty; no single reserve amount is right for every trip.

As you plan, think about what could change between the estimate and the destination: weather and wind, elevation, speed, cargo, and available charging. If the display or route planner updates its estimate, use that information to reassess the plan. Leave a reserve that makes sense for your situation rather than planning to arrive with no margin. The cited sources do not specify one correct reserve percentage or distance for every EV driver.

A quick decision guide

The measures differ in timing, mechanism, convenience, and compatibility. Preconditioning depends on the vehicle having a suitable feature and, for drawing some initial cooling energy from the grid, being connected to a charger. Shade is relevant while parked and must fit the vehicle. Speed, closed windows, and removing an unused rack address drag while driving; correct tire pressure and lighter cargo address vehicle setup. Most of these steps do not require buying anything, while a compatible shade is an optional purchase with no established range-saved figure.

Measure When it helps Why it helps Practical consideration
Pre-cool while plugged in Before departure, when charging is available Some initial cabin-cooling demand can be supplied by the grid Feature names and availability vary by vehicle
Park in shade or use a compatible sunshade While the car is parked in sun Limits solar heating of the cabin No specific driving-range gain is established; confirm shade fit
Hold a steady, legal speed During highway driving Reduces energy demand associated with high speed and repeated changes in pace Safety, traffic, and legal limits come first
Close windows at highway speed During highway driving Helps avoid extra aerodynamic drag Keep visibility and comfort safe; use climate control as the maker advises
Remove unused racks and excess cargo Before a trip Reduces avoidable aerodynamic drag or vehicle load Remove accessories only when practical and safe
Set tires to maker-specified pressure As part of normal vehicle checks Avoids unnecessary rolling resistance from underinflation Do not inflate above the specified value to chase range
Use the route planner and leave a reserve Before and during the trip Uses a trip-specific estimate rather than a generic label multiplier Allow for weather, wind, elevation, load, and charging access

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I improve my EV range in hot weather?

Start with the measures that match the problem. If the cabin is heat-soaked and the car is plugged in, use its scheduled departure or preconditioning feature to cool the cabin before leaving. Park in shade or use a compatible sunshade when practical. On the road, maintain a steady, legal speed, close the windows at highway speed, remove an unused exterior rack, and avoid carrying unnecessary cargo. Keep tire pressure at the vehicle maker’s specified value. The benefit varies by vehicle and conditions; there is no universal range gain for these steps.

Does highway driving reduce electric car range?

Highway speed can increase energy use because aerodynamic drag rises as speed increases. Roof or hitch racks and open windows can add drag, too. Drive smoothly at a steady, legal pace and remove accessories you do not need when practical. EPA’s combined range figure uses a 55% city and 45% highway weighting, so it is not a promise of a particular highway-trip distance. Use your EV’s route planner or energy display for the journey you are taking.

How much does air conditioning affect EV range?

There is no single AC range-loss percentage supported for every EV. AAA’s 2026 test found an 8.5% range loss for its tested EVs at 95°F compared with 75°F, with HVAC set to 72°F, but the test involved three EVs under controlled conditions and does not isolate a universal AC-on versus AC-off penalty. Use climate control as the vehicle maker recommends; comfort, safe visibility, and defogging matter.

Should I precondition my EV before driving in summer?

If your vehicle offers cabin preconditioning or a scheduled departure feature, cooling the cabin while connected to a charger can supply some of the initial cooling load from the grid rather than the traction battery. Feature names, availability, and instructions vary by make and model, so check your owner’s manual. If the car is not plugged in, do not assume the energy comes from the grid.

Does a sunshade increase electric-car range?

A compatible windshield or glass-roof sunshade can limit solar heating while the car is parked, which may reduce the cabin’s initial cooling demand. The cited sources do not quantify a driving-range gain from using one. Confirm that the shade fits your vehicle and does not interfere with sensors or equipment.

Should I inflate my tires above the recommended pressure to improve range?

No. Use the pressure specified by the vehicle maker and follow the manual’s guidance on checking it. The recommendation is not to inflate tires beyond that value in pursuit of range; more pressure is not automatically better.

Is the EPA range rating a good estimate for a summer highway trip?

It is a standardized combined estimate, not a prediction for your exact trip. EPA combines adjusted city and highway results with 55% city and 45% highway weighting; its test program includes a 95°F cabin-cooling cycle and a high-speed cycle. Actual use also depends on speed, weather, wind, elevation, load, and configuration. Use your car’s route planner or energy display and leave a practical charging reserve.

The Bottom Line

For hot-weather highway driving, address both sources of energy use: pre-cool while plugged in and reduce cabin heat while parked, then limit avoidable drag with a steady, legal speed, closed windows, and no unnecessary exterior rack. Keep tires at the maker’s specified pressure and plan with the vehicle’s trip estimate rather than a generic highway-range multiplier. AAA’s 2026 test offers useful context—an 8.5% range loss at 95°F versus 75°F for the tested EVs—but it is not a guarantee for every car or trip.
