In the United States, 91 percent of commuters drove alone in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). That dated national figure shows why changing even part of a commute is worth considering—but the right option depends on your route, schedule, safety, accessibility, and local services.
Start with the commute you actually have
Before choosing a mode, map your trip from door to door, including the first and last mile. Note your usual departure and arrival times, how often you travel, whether you need a car during the workday, and what alternatives are available at both ends.
USDOT’s 2024 Efficient Transportation: An Action Plan for Energy and Emissions Innovation reports that 87 percent of all U.S. trips in 2022 were made in private vehicles and 91 percent of commuters drove alone. These are national figures for 2022, not current estimates for a particular city or person.
- Availability and reliability: Check whether a route, service, or carpool fits the days and hours you work.
- Door-to-door time: Include waiting, transfers, parking, and walking or rolling to stops—not just time in the vehicle.
- Safety and access: Consider sidewalks, crossings, bike infrastructure, terrain, and any accessibility needs.
- Cost and flexibility: Account for fares, parking, employer benefits, and how you will handle schedule changes or errands.
- What the change replaces: A trip that substitutes for driving alone differs from one that adds a new journey.
These are practical ways to compare options, not a measured ranking of their emissions. The federal sources cited here do not provide an apples-to-apples emissions estimate for a specific commute, so avoid assuming a precise reduction without route-specific data.

Choose an alternative that fits
Public transit
For a route with useful service, transit can replace some or all of a solo car trip. USDOT states in its action plan that “Public transit investment is one of the most effective means to reduce transportation sector emissions.” That is a statement about the role of transit investment, not a calculation of the emissions saved on every rider’s trip.
Many transit riders walk to or from stations, or make additional trips on foot. USDOT describes this as one way transit use can increase physical activity; it is a general observation, not a guarantee of an individual health outcome.

Carpooling and vanpooling
Sharing a ride can be practical when coworkers, neighbors, or other commuters have compatible routes and schedules. Agree in advance on pickup points, days, cost-sharing, and what happens when someone needs to leave early. A carpool that replaces separate solo drives is the relevant change; avoid treating every shared ride as an automatic emissions saving regardless of what it replaces.
Walking, biking, or rolling
For shorter trips—or as a connection to transit—walking, biking, and rolling may work where routes are safe and accessible. Check distance, weather, secure bike parking, and the condition of sidewalks and crossings. A bicycle is one possible way to make a cycling commute feasible, but the right choice depends on the rider and route; the sources here do not establish a best bicycle or accessory.

Telework
If your job permits it, working from home can remove a commute on days you do not travel to the workplace. Confirm expectations with your employer and consider whether remote work is genuinely available for your role and schedule.

Ask your employer whether it offers commuter assistance. USDOT describes the Federal Transit Benefit as an employer-provided benefit intended to encourage home-to-work use of vanpools, commuter rail, commuter bus, or other mass transit. Eligibility and current rules depend on the program and employer policy, so confirm the details with your employer rather than assuming you qualify.

Also look for commute programs in your region. A USDOT FY 2025 budget document describes Georgia Commute Options as offering trip planning, discounted transit passes, and guaranteed rides home, while promoting transit, telework, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, and walking. This is a Georgia example, not a service available nationwide; check local providers for current offerings and terms.
Make a small, testable change
- Pick one day or leg of the commute when an alternative appears workable.
- Check current transit schedules, route conditions, employer policies, and any local program details you will rely on.
- Try the alternative and note door-to-door time, reliability, cost, and comfort.
- Adjust the plan or try another option if it does not fit; a mixed routine can be more workable than changing every commute at once.
Reassess based on your experience and the trips actually replaced. Without route-specific inputs, a precise emissions figure would be misleading.
