Yes, you may be able to update TomTom maps for free—but only if your specific device or app already includes that entitlement. TomTom’s proprietary map files are not generally available as free downloads for an ineligible device, and copying a map from another TomTom or using an activator is neither a legitimate nor a dependable solution.
Start by identifying your TomTom product. Eligible Wi-Fi devices update over Wi-Fi; many other portable units use MyDrive Connect or the older TomTom HOME software. Built-in vehicle systems require a vehicle-specific procedure. If you simply want TomTom navigation on a phone, the current consumer TomTom – Maps & Traffic app is free to download, although offline and premium features vary by app version, platform, and region.
The short version: You can legally get TomTom maps for free when TomTom included map updates with your device or app. You cannot generally download TomTom’s current proprietary map files, bypass activation, and install them on an ineligible device.
What “free TomTom maps” actually means
People use the phrase “free TomTom maps” to describe several different things:
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
- Free map updates included with a device: Some TomTom products include a map-update service or “lifetime” map updates. Those devices can receive updates without another map purchase while the product remains supported.
- Free update software: MyDrive Connect and TomTom HOME are free programs, but installing one does not make every map free. The software only manages the updates and services for which your device is eligible.
- A free smartphone app: TomTom offers a free consumer navigation app. That is different from downloading a TomTom map file for portable hardware.
- Free offline maps from another provider: Apps such as Organic Maps, OsmAnd, HERE WeGo, Google Maps, and Apple Maps can provide legally downloadable maps, but they do not provide TomTom map data.
- MapShare corrections: These were smaller user and map corrections, not a replacement for a complete current map. TomTom discontinued MapShare update support for devices on February 16, 2022. TomTom’s support notice explains the change.
- A free API allowance: TomTom’s developer APIs may have free monthly quotas, but API access is not a license to download and install consumer navigation maps on a TomTom device. TomTom’s developer pricing describes those separate terms.
TomTom says devices that include a map-update service can receive four or more full map updates per year for the supported life of the product. Devices without that entitlement may require a paid Map Update Service. See TomTom’s current update-options guidance.
First, identify which TomTom you have
The correct update method depends on the hardware and, in some cases, the vehicle it came from. Do not assume that a map intended for a portable GO or VIA device will work in a built-in dashboard system.
Wi-Fi portable devices
Newer products such as various GO Discover, GO Exclusive, GO Expert, GO Camper Max, GO Expert Plus, and GO Superior models can update directly over Wi-Fi. The exact features depend on the model and software generation. These devices normally do not need a computer for routine map updates.
MyDrive Connect devices
Many portable TomTom devices update through a Windows or Mac computer using MyDrive Connect. The program manages maps, device software, and subscriptions. It is free to install, but a map shown as “for purchase” is not made free by the program.

Older portable products commonly use TomTom HOME. If your device specifically uses HOME, use that program rather than attempting to force it through MyDrive Connect. Sign in with the TomTom account associated with the device.
Built-in or in-dash TomTom systems
TomTom navigation integrated into Renault, Mazda, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, smart, and other vehicles can use a vehicle-specific SD card, USB drive, TomTom HOME, MyDrive Connect, or an automaker-controlled update portal. The procedure depends on the exact vehicle and navigation system. TomTom lists separate in-dash procedures for systems including Mazda NB1, Fiat Blue&Me, smart Media-System, Renault Carminat, Peugeot Boxer, and Citroën Jumper.
Smartphone apps
The current consumer app is TomTom – Maps & Traffic, associated with TomTom’s transition from AmiGO. TomTom describes it as a free app with turn-by-turn navigation, maps, traffic, road-hazard information, speed limits, and speed-camera information in supported regions. The current TomTom app page has the official feature description, and the Google Play listing identifies the Android app.
GO Expert is different. It is aimed at truck and professional-vehicle drivers. Its features include truck routing, vehicle dimensions, hazardous-cargo settings, offline maps, and premium navigation options, but the app listing includes in-app purchases and subscriptions. “Free to download” does not mean that all GO Expert maps and features are free. Check the current store listing before relying on it.

The most reliable test is what TomTom offers after it recognizes your device—not the wording on an old retail box or a used-device listing.
- Find the exact model and serial number. The model name may appear on the back, underside, box, or device information screen. The serial number is particularly important because compatibility can depend on the model, serial prefix, software generation, storage capacity, and region.
- Install the correct official update program. Use Wi-Fi on supported devices, MyDrive Connect for compatible computer-based products, or TomTom HOME for older HOME devices.
- Sign in to the original TomTom account. A used device may still have an entitlement, but the account association and device compatibility must be confirmed by TomTom’s system.
- Open the map or subscription section. In MyDrive Connect, open My Content and inspect My Maps and the map-update service or expiry information. TomTom documents this process in its subscription-checking instructions.
- Read the offer carefully. “Included,” “available,” or “update” indicates an entitlement or an available update. “Expired,” “buy,” or a displayed price means that the device is not currently being offered a free update through that account.
TomTom’s Map Update Service page also provides a device checker based on the first two characters of the serial number. Use it as an initial compatibility check, then confirm the result in the update application.

What “lifetime maps” means
“Lifetime” does not mean that the owner receives updates forever, regardless of what happens to the hardware. It generally means updates for the supported life of that particular product, as determined by TomTom. It does not guarantee that:
- every future map format will work on every old device;
- a device that still powers on will remain compatible with current maps;
- the entitlement automatically transfers to another TomTom;
- the map works in a different region or product family; or
- an old device will receive updates on the same schedule as newer hardware.
TomTom’s current support information distinguishes newer Wi-Fi products, which receive full map updates approximately monthly, from previous-generation products, which receive four releases per year. As of August 9, 2026, TomTom’s support page listed map version 1170 as the latest map for previous-generation navigation devices. TomTom’s developer release page identifies the Q2 2026 version 1170 release as May 27, 2026. Because map versions change, check the live TomTom latest-maps page before treating 1170 as current.

Method 1: Update an eligible Wi-Fi TomTom for free
Use this method only if your model supports direct Wi-Fi updates.
- Turn on the TomTom device and connect it to a reliable private Wi-Fi network.
- Open the main menu and select Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi, choose your network, and enter its password.
- Go to Settings > TomTom Account.
- Sign in or create an account if the device requires one.
- Open Settings > Updates and New Items.
- Select the offered map and software updates.
- Tap Update now.
- Keep the device connected to power until the download and installation finish.
TomTom recommends an unrestricted private Wi-Fi connection. Public networks can be slow, filtered, or configured to require a browser sign-in, and map downloads can be large. The complete Wi-Fi update procedure is available from TomTom.
Expected result: After installation, the new map should appear in the device’s map settings and navigation should start normally. If no update is offered, the map may already be current, the device may be linked to another account, or the product may no longer support the offered map.
Method 2: Update an eligible device with MyDrive Connect
MyDrive Connect is the normal route for compatible TomTom devices that do not update directly over Wi-Fi.
- Download and install MyDrive Connect from TomTom.
- Do not connect the TomTom until the installation is complete.
- Open MyDrive Connect.
- Sign in with the TomTom account associated with the device.
- Connect the TomTom directly to the computer with a USB cable.
- Turn on the device and wait for MyDrive Connect to recognize it.
- Open My Content.
- Scroll to My Maps.
- Select Install, Update, or Update Selected for the map that is offered as included or available.
- Leave the device connected until the installation is complete.
- Use the application’s safe-disconnect option before unplugging the device.
TomTom says that changing maps through MyDrive Connect can require at least 8 GB of free space on the computer. Free space may also be needed on the TomTom itself. Keep the computer powered, prevent it from sleeping, and avoid interrupting the process.
If the complete map does not fit
MyDrive Connect may offer a Map Zone. A Map Zone is a regional portion of the map and, according to TomTom, contains the same level of detail as the complete map. Availability is limited to some devices and map products, including certain Europe, USA, Canada, and Mexico maps. See TomTom’s Map Zone guidance.
Method 3: Update an older device with TomTom HOME
For an older TomTom that uses HOME:
- Install TomTom HOME from TomTom’s official support or download channel.
- Connect the navigation device to the computer.
- Open TomTom HOME.
- Sign in with the relevant TomTom account.
- Click Update my device.
- Select the map that is offered for the device.
- Click Update and install.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. TomTom warns that this can take several hours depending on map size and connection speed.
- Click Done.
- Click the blue eject button in HOME before disconnecting the device.
Use the map that HOME offers for that specific device. Do not copy a map folder from another TomTom or attempt to substitute a map intended for a newer product family. TomTom’s HOME update instructions cover the supported process.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
Method 4: Update a built-in vehicle navigation system
There is no universal “TomTom car stereo” update procedure. Before downloading anything:
- Record the vehicle make, model, model year, and exact navigation-system name.
- Check the vehicle-specific TomTom support page and the owner’s manual.
- Determine whether the system uses an SD card, USB drive, TomTom HOME, MyDrive Connect, or the manufacturer’s own update portal.
- Back up the original SD card or USB contents where the manufacturer permits it.
- Install only the map package specified for that vehicle system.
- Follow any ignition, battery, or installation-time instructions from the vehicle maker.
A portable-device map is not automatically compatible with a dashboard system. Built-in systems can use different software, map formats, licensing, storage media, and vehicle integrations. If the system is supplied by an automaker, the manufacturer may control the update entitlement and sales process.
What to do when no free map update appears
“No update available” does not always mean that the map entitlement has disappeared. Work through these checks in order:
- Sign out and back in. Make sure you are using the TomTom account originally associated with the device or the account that purchased the map.
- Confirm device recognition. MyDrive Connect or HOME must identify the navigation device before it can display its map entitlement.
- Check My Content > My Maps. The map may already be installed, waiting for installation, or listed under a different status.
- Finish or cancel a pending update. A previous interrupted update can prevent a new offer from appearing.
- Restart everything. Close the update application, restart the device, restart the computer, and reconnect.
- Check compatibility. Use TomTom’s serial-number/device checker and verify that the model supports the current map generation.
- Try manual installation. In MyDrive Connect, open My Content > My Maps and select the map manually if it is shown there.
- Contact TomTom support. Have the model, serial number, account email, purchase details, and screenshots of the offer or error ready.
Common explanations include an already-installed latest map, a map purchased through another account, an unlinked device, an expired service, a pending update, or an incompatible map. TomTom documents these causes in its guide to map updates not being offered in MyDrive Connect.
Recovery for “No Maps Available” or “No Maps Found”
For a compatible MyDrive Connect device, TomTom’s recovery sequence is:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Connect the device and open MyDrive Connect.
- Go to My Content > My Maps.
- If the map is marked Corrupted, select it and click Uninstall.
- Open MyDrive Connect settings.
- Go to Downloads.
- Click Empty download folder, then save the settings.
- Disconnect the TomTom.
- Perform a soft reset using the procedure for your model.
- Reconnect the device and restart MyDrive Connect.
- Return to My Content > My Maps.
- Select the map and click Install.
Follow TomTom’s full “No maps available” recovery instructions if the map still does not appear.
If the computer does not recognize the TomTom
- Connect directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub.
- Try the supplied or a known-good data-capable USB cable.
- Try another USB port.
- Fully charge the TomTom.
- Restart the device and MyDrive Connect or HOME.
- Confirm that your operating system and update application are supported.
TomTom specifically warns that USB hubs and some front-panel or keyboard USB ports can cause connection problems with HOME devices. A direct connection to a main computer USB port is the safer choice. Do not unplug the device during a map installation.
If the map is too large
Free up storage on both the computer and TomTom, install a Map Zone if one is offered, remove unused regions, and use a stable private Wi-Fi or wired internet connection. Do not interrupt the installation simply because the progress indicator appears to pause; large map packages can take a long time to download and verify.
Use TomTom navigation free on a phone
If you no longer need dedicated TomTom hardware, the current consumer TomTom – Maps & Traffic app is the simplest official no-cost option. TomTom describes it as including:
Rank #4
- 8” navigator with high-resolution, dual-orientation display and map updates of North America .Special Feature:Large Display; Voice Assist; Hands-Free Calling; Live Traffic and Weather; Traffic Cams and Parking; Smart Notifications,Driver Alerts; Tripadvisor; National Parks Directory; Find Places by Name; Garmin Real Directions Feature.
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, weather, parking and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
- turn-by-turn navigation;
- maps;
- real-time traffic;
- roadwork, closure, and hazard information;
- speed-limit information; and
- speed-camera information in supported countries and regions.
Install it through the official TomTom app page or your phone’s official app store. The app may use mobile data for live traffic and other connected services, so “free” does not necessarily mean “works without an internet connection.”
Do not assume the consumer app has universal offline maps
TomTom’s app products and feature availability have changed during the transition from AmiGO. Support information has described offline navigation as an Android feature in development, while current listings emphasize online navigation and live services. Verify the offline-map option in the current version on your specific Android or iPhone before traveling without cellular coverage. Do not assume that the free consumer app offers the same offline functionality as GO Expert.
GO Expert is a separate paid-feature product
GO Expert is designed for trucks and professional vehicles. It can provide offline maps, truck-specific routing, vehicle dimensions, hazardous-cargo settings, and restrictions that ordinary car navigation may not handle. However, the app includes subscriptions or in-app purchases. If you need truck navigation, evaluate the current subscription offer rather than treating GO Expert as a completely free TomTom map solution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Legal free alternatives for offline navigation
If your TomTom is unsupported and you need offline navigation at no cost, a different navigation app may be more practical than trying to revive the hardware. These apps use their own data sources; none supplies free TomTom maps.

OpenStreetMap is open data under the Open Database License, subject to attribution and other licensing requirements. An OpenStreetMap download is not a TomTom map file and is not a drop-in replacement for TomTom hardware. Review OpenStreetMap’s licensing information before redistributing data.
Why you should avoid TomTom map hacks
Websites offering cracked TomTom maps, torrents, key generators, activation tools, or modified installers are not a safe alternative. They can involve:
- copyright and license violations;
- malware or altered installation files;
- corrupted or incomplete maps;
- the wrong region or incompatible software generation;
- device boot failures or loss of the existing map; and
- no dependable support or recovery path.
TomTom states that purchased maps and services are assigned to one specific navigation device and cannot be transferred or shared with another. TomTom’s licensing guidance also matters when buying second-hand devices or map cards. TomTom reserves its map copyrights and prohibits unauthorized copying in its copyright terms.
For that reason, do not copy a map from a friend’s TomTom, download a “universal” map file, or use an activator. Check the official entitlement first. If the device is not eligible, compare the cost of an official update with replacing the hardware or using a legal offline navigation app.
If the official update is not free
TomTom’s U.S. store currently lists its Map Update Service at $69.95 for 12 months or $59.95 for a single map update. Those are U.S. prices shown in the supplied research and may change. Eligibility, availability, currency, and pricing can vary by device, country, account, and map region. Check TomTom’s current store page for the actual offer shown for your device.
Best Value
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Before paying, compare:
- the price of the update with the age and condition of the TomTom;
- whether your device still supports current map versions;
- whether a Map Zone solves a storage problem;
- whether your phone can meet your navigation needs; and
- whether a free offline alternative is adequate for your routes.
For a built-in vehicle system, compare the offer only after confirming the exact vehicle-specific procedure. Buying a portable TomTom map does not necessarily update an OEM navigation system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update an old TomTom for free?
Possibly. Sign in to the TomTom account associated with the device and check it through Wi-Fi, MyDrive Connect, or TomTom HOME, depending on the model. If the device included lifetime or an active map-update service, a free update may appear. An old device can still power on while no longer supporting the newest map, so compatibility must be confirmed rather than assumed.
What does lifetime maps mean on a TomTom?
It generally means free map updates for the supported life of that particular TomTom product, not the owner’s lifetime and not every future map format. The entitlement does not automatically transfer to another device, and TomTom may eventually stop supporting an older product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I copy a map from another TomTom?
No. TomTom says purchased maps and services are licensed to one specific navigation device and cannot be transferred or shared with another. A copied map may also be incompatible with the target device or fail activation.
Can I use an OpenStreetMap file on TomTom hardware?
Generally no. OpenStreetMap is a separate open-data source, not a TomTom-compatible map package. You can use OpenStreetMap-based apps such as Organic Maps or OsmAnd on a phone, but an OSM download is not a drop-in map for TomTom hardware.
Is the TomTom app free?
The current consumer TomTom – Maps & Traffic app is free to download and use for its advertised navigation features. Traffic and other live services may require an internet connection, and offline-map availability can vary by operating system, country, app version, and current rollout.
Is GO Expert free?
GO Expert is free to download, but it is a separate truck and professional-vehicle navigation app with in-app purchases or subscriptions. Offline maps, truck routing, vehicle restrictions, and premium features should not be assumed to be free.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does MyDrive Connect show no map update?
The device may already have the latest map, may be linked to a different TomTom account, may have a pending update, may be incompatible with the offered map, or may not be recognized correctly. Sign out and back in, inspect My Content > My Maps, complete pending updates, restart the device and application, and check compatibility.
What is the latest TomTom map version?
The supplied TomTom support research listed version 1170 as the latest map for previous-generation navigation devices as of August 9, 2026, with the Q2 2026 release dated May 27, 2026. Map versions change, and newer Wi-Fi devices can follow a different release schedule, so check TomTom’s live latest-maps page before updating.
Can MapShare provide a complete free TomTom map?
No. MapShare corrections were not equivalent to a complete map database, and TomTom discontinued MapShare update support for devices on February 16, 2022. Use the official map-update process instead.
What is the best free offline alternative to TomTom?
For a simple offline phone navigator, Organic Maps or HERE WeGo are strong starting points. OsmAnd is better for detailed customization and outdoor use. Google Maps and Apple Maps are convenient when their offline-download features and regional coverage meet your needs. None uses TomTom’s proprietary map data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Check your exact TomTom model, sign in with the correct account, and let the official Wi-Fi, MyDrive Connect, or TomTom HOME software determine whether a free update is included. “Lifetime maps” applies only while that product remains supported. If no legitimate update is offered, do not use a cracked map or activator: choose the official paid update, the free TomTom phone app, or a legal offline alternative such as Organic Maps, OsmAnd, HERE WeGo, Google Maps, or Apple Maps.
