Aerodynamic modifications can help a car generate downforce, but whether that creates useful grip depends on the part, the car, its setup and the conditions. A splitter, spoiler or wing, diffuser, or dive planes are not guaranteed grip upgrades—and the available wind-tunnel study does not establish a universal gain for street cars. Start by understanding what each part does and what evidence supports its claims.
How aero mods can affect grip
Aerodynamic add-ons guide airflow and can change downforce and drag. Downforce is an aerodynamic force that presses the vehicle toward the road; drag resists forward motion. A part’s name or appearance alone does not establish how much of either force it produces on a particular car.
It is also important to distinguish an aerodynamic measurement from a handling or lap-time result. A measured force, a lap-time comparison and a driver’s subjective impression answer different questions. One does not automatically prove the others.
What the main aero parts do
These are distinct types of add-on. Their effects depend on their design and installation, and the available evidence does not provide universal numerical rankings for consumer parts.

This comparison identifies the tested categories, not guaranteed benefits or a recommended combination. The study assessed each add-on group individually; it does not show that combining them will produce the same results.
What the wind-tunnel study establishes—and what it does not
In a 2018 SAE International paper, Soares, Knowles, Goñalons Olives, Garry and colleagues reported a parametric assessment of dive planes, a front bumper splitter, a rear-end spoiler and an underbody diffuser. The work used a simplified 35% scale DrivAer Fastback model with a smooth underbody, no wheels and side mirrors. Each group was assessed individually across a range of ride heights over a moving belt. Tests were conducted at zero yaw, a car-length-based Reynolds number of 4.2 × 10⁶ and Mach 0.12, in Cranfield’s 8 ft × 6 ft wind tunnel. SAE International’s 2018 paper abstract describes the work as addressing enclosed-wheel racing-car categories and proposing a high-performance configuration.

Those details define the experiment; they are not expected results for a full-size road car. The study abstract does not provide a transferable grip percentage for a particular consumer vehicle or establish the effect of a retail kit. It should not be used to claim that a generic bolt-on part will make every car grip better.
How to evaluate a grip or downforce claim
Ask what was tested and how before comparing products or interpreting a performance number. SAE J2881_201910 is a recommended practice intended to improve uniformity and traceability for published aerodynamic performance measurements. It describes full-scale wind-tunnel testing of a production-ready, full-scale vehicle under specified loading, content and tunnel conditions. Its use is generally voluntary, but the SAE page says it is required when someone advertises or publishes performance as measured according to J2881. It is a measurement and reporting practice, not a product certification. Read SAE’s J2881_201910 description.

- Vehicle and configuration: Is the make, model, year and relevant setup identified?
- Part and package: Was the part tested by itself, or as one element of a larger aero package?
- Method and conditions: Was the result measured in a wind tunnel or another stated setting? Are the conditions comparable to the intended use?
- Reported outcome: Is the claim a measured aerodynamic force, a lap-time result or a subjective impression? Treat these as different kinds of evidence.
A result measured on a scale model in a specified tunnel is useful evidence about that experiment. It is not interchangeable with a full-scale vehicle test or proof of a particular road-car lap-time improvement.
Mounting and safety deserve as much attention as shape
Aero devices need secure mounting. Formula SAE’s 2026 competition rules say mounting systems must have sufficient static rigidity and that devices must not oscillate or move excessively while the vehicle is moving. The rules also set minimum radii for forward-facing edges that could contact a pedestrian: 5 mm for horizontal edges and 3 mm for vertical edges. The practical lesson is to check the device’s mounting method and stability rather than judging a part only by its profile. Poorly secured hardware or edges that create a hazard are concerns independent of whether a seller claims a performance benefit.

SAE J2492_201910 concerns suspension and ride-height modifications for automobiles, light trucks and SUVs as they apply to legal use. It explicitly excludes wheel and tire modifications from its scope and warns that those can have potentially serious side effects. It is not a general standard for the legality of aero devices. A sensible path for a first aero modification
- Choose the use case. Decide whether the car is intended for road use, track use or both; applicable rules and priorities may differ.
- Look for vehicle-specific fitment. Verify the exact make, model, year and trim rather than assuming a universal part fits or performs as claimed.
- Ask for relevant evidence. Prefer claims that identify the tested vehicle, configuration, method and conditions. Check whether the result describes an aerodynamic force, lap time or subjective feedback.
- Inspect installation requirements. Review mounting points, rigidity and the potential for movement at speed before treating the part as ready for use.
- Check local requirements. Confirm that the modification is permitted for your vehicle and intended use in your jurisdiction.
