To follow a Formula 3 season, watch Friday qualifying as well as the races: it sets the Feature Race grid and determines the reverse-grid Sprint starting order. The Sprint and Feature Race award different points, and the official FIA Championship Standings table is the place to check the changing totals. Most rounds use one Sprint and one Feature Race, but special-format events can add sessions or races, so check each round’s timetable before applying the usual format.
How a standard Formula 3 weekend works
The FIA’s Formula 3 FAQ describes the standard 2025 weekend as a Friday practice and qualifying day, a Saturday Sprint Race and a Sunday Feature Race. The sessions have distinct purposes: practice gives drivers track time, qualifying determines the Feature Race order and supplies the positions used to form the Sprint grid.

| Day | Session | Published duration | What it determines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | Free Practice | 45 minutes | Practice; it does not set either race grid. |
| Friday | Qualifying | 30 minutes | The qualifying classification sets the Feature Race grid and is used to form the Sprint reverse grid. |
| Saturday | Sprint Race | 45 minutes | A separate race with its own points allocation. |
| Sunday | Feature Race | One hour | A separate race with the larger standard points allocation. |
These are the durations and sequence in the FIA FAQ’s standard 2025 format, not a guarantee that every event timetable will match. Check the schedule for the specific round, especially when following an event that has been announced with a special format.
The distinction between session length and race outcome is useful when planning what to follow. Free Practice is the only listed session that does not establish a grid or directly award the race points described below. Qualifying is the key Friday session for the weekend’s starting positions; Saturday and Sunday are separate scoring opportunities. A published timetable is still the best guide to the actual session times and order at a particular venue.

How qualifying sets the two grids
Under the standard arrangement described in the FIA FAQ, the Feature Race grid follows Friday’s qualifying classification. The Sprint grid is formed by reversing the top 12 from qualifying. That means a driver’s qualifying position has two different effects: it sets the starting position for the Feature Race, and for drivers in the top 12 it is reversed to determine their Sprint positions.
For example, the driver who qualifies first is placed 12th on the Sprint grid under that top-12 reversal, while the 12th qualifier starts the Sprint from first. Qualifiers outside the top 12 are not part of the reversed group; the event’s official grid is the authoritative reference for exact starting positions, including any changes published after qualifying.
This is why Friday is not just a warm-up for the races. A driver may qualify near the front for Sunday but start farther back in Saturday’s Sprint. Conversely, a qualifying result that places a driver 12th can put them at the front of the Sprint while leaving them 12th on the Feature Race grid. Follow both race grids rather than assuming the Sprint winner started from pole.

The Sprint is run as its own race, with its own classification and points allocation. Likewise, a strong Sprint result does not change the Feature Race grid under the standard format: that grid follows qualifying. When watching live, keep Friday’s qualifying order and the two official grids separate so the starting position you expect for one race is not mistakenly carried over to the other.
Also distinguish the qualifying classification from the final published grid. The standard description explains how the grids are formed, while the official grid shows the positions drivers actually start from after any published changes. For a close championship calculation, use the race classification and applicable regulations for the result, and use the final Feature Race grid when determining who is shown in pole position for the pole bonus.
How many points are available in each race?
The 2026 FIA Formula 3 Sporting Regulations, Version 2, award points to the top ten classified drivers in both races. The Sprint’s points descend by one from first to tenth; the Feature Race rewards the winner with 25 points and uses a different scale for the remaining places.
| Finishing position | Sprint Race points | Feature Race points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 10 | 25 |
| 2nd | 9 | 18 |
| 3rd | 8 | 15 |
| 4th | 7 | 12 |
| 5th | 6 | 10 |
| 6th | 5 | 8 |
| 7th | 4 | 6 |
| 8th | 3 | 4 |
| 9th | 2 | 2 |
| 10th | 1 | 1 |
The table is the standard allocation in the 2026 regulations. A 2025 event’s exact scoring rules should be checked against the regulations in force for that season; do not assume that a later regulation version automatically applies to an earlier championship.

The different scales make finishing position and race type both important. A Sprint victory is worth 10 points, while a Feature Race victory is worth 25. A second place in the Feature Race earns 18 points, twice the nine points for second in the Sprint. The top ten score in either race, but a finish outside the top ten does not earn a position-based point under this allocation. That does not mean every event uses this exact table: use the regulation version for the season and account for reduced scoring if a race is interrupted or shortened.
Bonus points
The 2026 regulations provide two additional types of points:
- Feature Race pole position: Two points go to the driver shown in pole position on the final Feature Race grid. The standard rule is tied to that final grid position, rather than simply to winning Friday qualifying.
- Fastest lap: One point is awarded in each race to the driver with the fastest valid lap among the top-ten classified drivers. If the leader has completed less than half the scheduled race distance, no fastest-lap point is awarded.
For a season total, add the points from each race and any eligible bonus points. For example, a hypothetical driver who wins a standard Sprint, finishes second in the Feature Race, holds Feature Race pole on the final grid and records an eligible fastest lap in the Sprint would score 10 + 18 + 2 + 1 = 31 points across those results. The example illustrates how the rules add together; it is not a result from a real round.
Fastest lap is not an automatic point for the driver who posts the quickest lap overall: the lap must be valid, the driver must be among the top-ten classified finishers, and the leader must have completed at least half the scheduled distance for the point to be awarded. Check the final classification and the applicable regulations rather than relying on a live timing screen alone. The bonus can affect a close points comparison, but it is only one point per race and is subject to those conditions.

The pole bonus also has a specific reference point. Under the standard 2026 rule, it goes to the driver shown in pole position on the final Feature Race grid. It is therefore best to verify the final grid rather than assume that the fastest qualifier automatically receives the two points, particularly if the published starting order changes after qualifying.
Interrupted or shortened races can receive reduced scoring under the regulations. If a red flag or shortened distance affects a specific result, use the relevant current FIA regulation clauses and the official classification rather than applying the full-race table by default.
How the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships are decided
The Drivers’ Championship goes to the driver with the highest points total from Competitions that actually took place. A cancelled competition therefore is not treated as a completed result for this purpose. For the Teams’ Championship, the title goes to the Competitor with the highest score, with results from all three of its cars counted.

That distinction matters when reading a standings table. A team’s championship score is not based only on its best-finishing car: each of its three cars’ results contributes. To understand a close title contest, compare the official cumulative total, not just race wins or the most recent weekend’s results.
Think of the Drivers’ table as each driver’s points accumulated across competitions that took place, and the Teams’ table as the score for the Competitor’s three cars together. A driver’s result can help the team total, but the two championships answer different questions: which driver has the highest eligible total, and which Competitor has the highest score when all three cars are counted. A win count or one standout finish is not a substitute for comparing the points totals.
When a season is in progress, standings are provisional in the practical sense that more results can still change the totals. After a round, compare the updated FIA table rather than adding only the latest race result to an old total. If reporting a points gap or title position, identify when the table was checked, because the order and totals can change as competitions are completed.
What changes at the 2026 Madrid finale?
The standard one-Sprint, one-Feature pattern did not apply unchanged to the 2026 Madrid finale. The FIA announced an additional Qualifying session and a second Feature Race. Its announcement quoted FIA Formula 3 CEO Bruno Michel: “This season finale at Madrid will include an additional Qualifying session and a second Feature Race.”
The event-specific details published by the FIA were:
- The first Qualifying session set the Sprint reverse grid and the grid for the first Feature Race.
- The second Qualifying session set the grid for the second Feature Race.
- Pole position in each Qualifying session awarded two points.
- Both Feature Races used the standard Feature Race points allocation.
This format creates two Feature Race scoring opportunities rather than one, in addition to the Sprint and qualifying pole points. Do not estimate an expanded round’s maximum points using only the usual single-Feature weekend. Use the event timetable and applicable regulations to account for every race and bonus point. More generally, the Madrid format is a reminder to check the published schedule for every event: the standard format is a useful baseline, not a substitute for the round’s own instructions.
For that event, do not assume the ordinary single-qualifying description covers the whole weekend. The two qualifying sessions had different jobs: the first was used for the Sprint reverse grid and first Feature Race grid, while the second set the second Feature Race grid. Both Feature Races had the standard Feature Race points allocation, so each added a separate opportunity to score under that table. The FIA announcement also specified two points for pole position in each qualifying session; when applying those event-specific points, follow the event’s published format rather than silently substituting the standard single-Feature rule.

The practical lesson is to count the actual sessions and races on the schedule before calculating a weekend total. A special event may offer more than one Feature Race and more than one qualifying pole opportunity. Its scoring opportunities cannot be compared directly with a standard round by looking at one race result or assuming the usual race count.

The FIA’s 2026 season overview directs readers to its Championship Standings section. Use the official table for current order and points during the season, or the final classified order once the championship is complete. Standings change as races are completed, so include the date checked when quoting a total or describing a title position.
The FIA’s 2026 season overview says sessions are available through F1 TV or local television channels; the FIA FAQ directs readers to regional broadcaster information. Which coverage is available, and which platform tier includes it, depends on location. Check the broadcaster listing for your country rather than assuming a service carries every session everywhere.
For a reliable check, start with the official FIA Championship Standings section, then confirm whether you are looking at the Drivers’ or Teams’ table and whether it is current or final. Do not quote a champion or final total until the official classified table is available and checked. When following a live season, the latest table may reflect completed competitions only up to its update; note the date beside any total you repeat.
Viewing access is a separate question from the sporting format. The overview identifies F1 TV and local television channels as ways sessions may be available, while the FAQ directs readers to regional broadcaster details. There is no single availability assumption that works for every country or every platform tier. Check the broadcaster information for your location and confirm that it covers the specific session you want to watch.
A practical way to keep track
- Before the event: Check the round’s official timetable. Note the qualifying sessions, Sprint and Feature Race(s), and whether the event departs from the usual schedule.
- After qualifying: Check the published race grids. Confirm the Feature Race order and the Sprint’s reversed top-12 order separately.
- After each race: Use the official classification and points table. Account for any eligible fastest-lap point and, for the Feature Race, the pole-position point under the applicable rules.
- For the championship picture: Check the FIA standings after results are incorporated. Track each driver’s total and remember that the Teams’ Championship counts all three cars.
- To watch: Consult the FIA’s regional broadcaster information and confirm coverage for your country and the particular session.
These checks are useful in sequence because each answers a different question. The timetable tells you what is scheduled, the grids tell you where each driver starts, the classification shows the official race result, and the standings show the cumulative championship effect. If something about a result is unusual—such as a shortened race or a final grid different from the qualifying order—consult the applicable regulations and official event documents before calculating points.

The result alone does not tell the whole scoring story. A Sprint win is worth 10 points under the 2026 rules, while a Feature Race win is worth 25, so the Sunday result can alter the championship more sharply. Qualifying also creates a strategic contrast between the grids: a strong position for the Feature Race can mean a less favorable Sprint starting place when it falls within the reversed top 12.

When checking a weekend’s consequences, verify three things in order: the official starting grids, the final classified results for both races, and the updated standings. Add a fourth check at a special-format round: how many qualifying sessions and Feature Races were held, and which qualifying session determined each grid. This avoids comparing a nonstandard round to a normal one as though they offered the same number of scoring chances.
For a quick comparison between the two standard races, ask three questions: did a driver finish in the top ten, what was the points value of that position in this race type, and did an eligible bonus apply? A fourth question matters when comparing weekends: was it a standard one-Sprint, one-Feature event, or did the timetable include extra sessions or races? Keeping those questions separate avoids treating every win, pole or fastest lap as worth the same amount.
One simple way to follow a title battle is to record each driver’s official total after a completed round and then compare the next published table. Use race results to explain how the total changed, but let the cumulative standings establish the current order. For a team comparison, remember to account for the results from all three cars rather than focusing only on the driver who finished highest.
