When Apple CarPlay is not working, start with the connection—not a factory reset. Check that your iPhone, vehicle, country or region, and connection type are supported; then test the cable or wireless link, restart both devices, enable Siri, remove Screen Time restrictions, forget the car, and pair it again. If every known-good phone and cable fails, the problem may be the vehicle’s USB port, infotainment firmware, or head unit rather than the iPhone.
Use the steps below in order. They begin with quick, reversible checks and progress to software updates and vehicle service.
Before troubleshooting: confirm CarPlay is possible
Apple CarPlay requires three things:
- A compatible iPhone
- A compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereo
- Availability in the vehicle’s supported country or region
Apple’s current compatibility information includes iPhone models from the iPhone 5 onward in its displayed lineup and more than 800 vehicle models, along with aftermarket systems from brands including Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony. That does not mean every iPhone works with every car. Compatibility can vary by model year, trim, market, connection type, iOS version, and stereo software.
Your vehicle owner’s manual and manufacturer are the authoritative sources for exact compatibility. If your specific vehicle is not listed, or the CarPlay option is absent from its infotainment system, do not assume a cable, adapter, or iPhone reset will add the feature.

1. Identify whether the problem is wired or wireless
The first useful question is whether CarPlay fails over a cable, wirelessly, or both. The fix is different for each connection.
For wired CarPlay
- Unplug and reconnect the iPhone firmly.
- Try a different USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Try another USB port in the vehicle, if one is available.
- Look for a port marked with a CarPlay or smartphone icon. Some vehicle USB ports provide power only.
- Make sure the vehicle is in the correct USB or smartphone input rather than another audio source.
A phone that charges but does not open CarPlay has established an electrical connection, but that does not prove that data is passing between the phone and head unit. The cable, adapter, USB port, or vehicle system may still be unable to establish CarPlay.
If your wired connection is intermittent or repeatedly disconnects, testing a replacement CarPlay USB cable is a sensible first purchase. Match the cable to the iPhone connector and the vehicle’s USB port, and test another vehicle port before buying a more specialized accessory. A known-good, data-capable cable is the goal; an Apple-branded cable is not universally mandatory.
For wireless CarPlay
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure Wi-Fi is on.
- In Wi-Fi settings, select the vehicle’s CarPlay network and verify that Auto-Join is enabled.
- Start the vehicle and wait for the infotainment system to finish loading.
- If CarPlay does not launch automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
Wireless CarPlay uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Turning on Bluetooth alone is not enough, and being connected to a different Wi-Fi network can interfere with the vehicle’s wireless CarPlay connection.

Restart both sides of the connection before changing more settings:
- Restart the iPhone normally.
- Turn the vehicle off completely.
- Open and close the driver’s door if your vehicle requires that to shut down the infotainment system.
- Wait briefly, start the vehicle again, and retry CarPlay.
Do this after changing a cable, USB port, Bluetooth setting, or wireless CarPlay setting. A normal restart is low risk. It is not the same as restoring the iPhone to factory settings.
3. Make sure Siri is enabled
Siri must be enabled for CarPlay setup and voice controls. On the iPhone, open Settings, locate Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri—the label can vary by iOS version—and make sure Siri is turned on. Then restart the connection and try again.
If Siri is disabled, CarPlay may fail to complete setup or voice commands may not work even if the display connection appears normal.

4. Remove Screen Time restrictions
Screen Time can block CarPlay. Check:
Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps
Make sure CarPlay is allowed. If the iPhone is managed by a parent, school, or employer, the person or organization controlling the device may need to change this setting.
After enabling CarPlay, restart the iPhone and vehicle and test again. Restrictions can prevent CarPlay from launching even when the cable and vehicle are otherwise compatible.
5. Forget the vehicle and pair it again
Use this step when CarPlay used to work, the vehicle appears in the iPhone’s CarPlay settings, or wireless pairing became corrupted.

- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Forget This Car.
- Restart the iPhone and vehicle.
- Set up CarPlay again using the vehicle manufacturer’s pairing procedure.
For wireless systems, also remove the iPhone from the vehicle’s Bluetooth or phone-pairing menu before starting over. Car manufacturers use different menu names, so follow the vehicle manual for the car-side deletion and pairing steps.
Forgetting one vehicle does not erase the iPhone. It clears the stored CarPlay relationship. That is very different from erasing all content and settings.
6. Update iOS and the vehicle’s infotainment software
Update the iPhone
Check for an iOS update under Settings > General > Software Update. Install the latest available update for your iPhone, then restart the phone and test CarPlay again. Apple’s current iPhone documentation describes the update process for iOS 26, but the exact update offered depends on the iPhone model and Apple’s release schedule.

Update the vehicle stereo
The infotainment system has separate firmware. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s support page, owner’s manual, or dealer instructions for the latest software and installation method. Depending on the vehicle, an update may be installed over the air, from a USB drive, or by a dealer.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that an iPhone update will repair a vehicle firmware problem. Availability and procedures vary by make, model, model year, trim, and country. If CarPlay disappeared after an infotainment update, or the update cannot be installed by the owner, contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer.
7. Separate a CarPlay connection problem from an app problem
If CarPlay connects but one app is missing or malfunctioning, the connection itself may be working. CarPlay does not mirror the entire iPhone screen. Only compatible apps and supported categories appear, including many audio, navigation, messaging, voice-calling, EV-charging, parking, and quick-food-ordering apps.
Try these checks:
- Confirm the app is installed and current on the iPhone.
- Check the CarPlay app arrangement in Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Customize, where available.
- Restart the iPhone and vehicle.
- Test another compatible app to determine whether the issue is limited to one title.
If only one third-party app is affected, contact that app’s developer. An ordinary iPhone app will not necessarily appear on the vehicle display simply because it is installed on the phone.
Optional convenience upgrade: wireless CarPlay adapter
Only buy this for a vehicle that already supports factory wired CarPlay.
A wireless CarPlay adapter converts an existing wired CarPlay connection into a wireless one. It does not add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks CarPlay, repair a damaged USB data path, or fix a defective infotainment head unit.
This accessory makes sense when wired CarPlay works reliably but you want the phone to connect without plugging it in. Before buying, verify that the car already supports wired Apple CarPlay and check the adapter’s vehicle, iOS, and connection requirements. Compatibility differs among vehicles and adapters, so do not treat one model’s results as a guarantee for another.

When a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter is involved
Some USB-C iPhones or vehicle setups involve an adapter and a separate cable. Apple says a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter works with most CarPlay vehicles, but warns that some combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems can disrupt wired CarPlay.
If that arrangement is unreliable, use a direct cable that matches the iPhone and vehicle connectors when possible. A USB-C to Lightning adapter for CarPlay can be appropriate for a compatible setup, but it should be tested rather than assumed to solve a connection fault.
Do not factory-reset the iPhone as a routine CarPlay fix
A factory restore removes the iPhone’s information and settings. It is a separate recovery procedure, not the normal way to reset a CarPlay pairing. Forget the vehicle, restart both devices, and check the cable, restrictions, Siri, and software first.
A network-settings reset is also not a universal CarPlay repair. It can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and other network information, so reserve it for situations where ordinary wireless troubleshooting has failed and you understand what will be cleared. It should not replace checking compatibility, pairing, and vehicle firmware.
When to contact the manufacturer, dealer, or installer
Escalate the issue when:
- Your exact vehicle, trim, model year, or market is not listed as compatible.
- CarPlay disappeared after an infotainment update.
- Every known-good cable and compatible iPhone fails.
- The USB port is loose, damaged, wet, or physically broken.
- The head unit repeatedly reboots, freezes, or loses its USB connection.
- The vehicle requires a firmware update that cannot be installed by the owner.
- Wired CarPlay fails even though the phone, cable, and port work in another compatible vehicle.
Apple directs compatibility and stereo-firmware questions to the vehicle manufacturer. For a hardware diagnosis or installation, use an authorized dealer CarPlay update service or a qualified car-audio professional. An aftermarket CarPlay head unit may be an option for some vehicles, but installation, steering-wheel controls, backup cameras, factory microphones, and trim compatibility must be checked before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is CarPlay not working even though the iPhone is charging?
Charging proves that power is reaching the iPhone, not that a data connection has been established. Try a different data-capable cable, another vehicle USB port, and the port marked for CarPlay or smartphone use. A charge-only port, damaged cable, adapter problem, or faulty head unit can provide power without CarPlay data.

Test a known-good data cable, try another compatible USB port, and connect the iPhone directly rather than through an adapter combination. Restart the iPhone and vehicle, update iOS and vehicle firmware, and check whether the USB port is loose or damaged. If every cable and phone fails, have the vehicle’s USB path or head unit inspected.
What should I check when wireless CarPlay will not connect?
Turn on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. In Settings > Wi-Fi, select the vehicle’s CarPlay network and verify Auto-Join is enabled. Select the CarPlay logo manually if it does not open, restart both devices, then forget and re-pair the vehicle if necessary.
Does CarPlay require Bluetooth and Wi-Fi?
Wireless CarPlay requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Wired CarPlay primarily uses the USB data connection, although pairing and vehicle-specific setup behavior can vary.

Can a wireless CarPlay adapter fix CarPlay?
Only in a limited situation. It can convert a working factory wired CarPlay connection into a wireless one. It cannot add CarPlay to an unsupported vehicle, repair a defective USB data connection, or fix a failing head unit.
Does every iPhone and car support CarPlay?
No. Compatibility depends on the exact iPhone, vehicle, model year, trim, market, connection type, iOS version, and vehicle software. Check Apple’s compatibility information and confirm the exact vehicle with its manufacturer.
Why does CarPlay connect but one app not appear?
CarPlay is not general iPhone screen mirroring. Only compatible apps and supported categories appear. Check the app’s CarPlay arrangement under Settings > General > CarPlay > your vehicle > Customize, update the app, and contact its developer if only that app is affected.

The Bottom Line
Most CarPlay failures can be isolated without erasing the iPhone: verify compatibility, test the correct wired or wireless connection, restart both devices, enable Siri, remove restrictions, forget and re-pair the car, and update both iOS and vehicle firmware. A cable is the appropriate first purchase for unreliable wired CarPlay; a wireless adapter is only for a car that already has reliable wired CarPlay. Persistent failure across multiple phones and cables points to the vehicle, not another iPhone setting.
