There is no single “best” car accident lawyer for every South Carolina case. Start by getting names through the South Carolina Bar Lawyer Referral Service, verify each lawyer in the Judicial Branch directory, then compare relevant experience, who will handle your case, communication, scope of work, and written fee terms.
Start with a South Carolina Bar lawyer referral
The South Carolina Bar’s Lawyer Referral Service connects people with lawyers by legal issue and location. Participating lawyers agree to charge no more than $50 for a 30-minute consultation. That is a limited consultation fee, not the cost of representation: if the consultation lasts longer or you hire the lawyer, normal fees apply.
The Bar does not take clients as an agency. It may connect people with an attorney or another legal-aid provider, so use the service to find possible help rather than treating a referral as a recommendation or guarantee of fit.
Verify the lawyer’s South Carolina directory listing
Look up each candidate through the South Carolina Judicial Branch’s attorney search, using a first name, last name, or bar number. A successful search provides contact information. It confirms a directory listing; it is not an endorsement and does not establish a particular practice specialty.

Compare candidates on the work that matters
Use the initial conversation to establish what the lawyer—not just the firm—will do for your case. Ask the same core questions of each candidate so you can compare the answers directly.
- Relevant experience: What motor-vehicle injury matters has the lawyer handled that are relevant to the circumstances of your crash? Ask about the kinds of issues involved, rather than relying on an unexplained case count or outcome statistic.
- Day-to-day responsibility: Who will be your main contact, who will handle the matter day to day, and when will the attorney personally become involved?
- Communication: How will updates be delivered, how often should you expect them, and whom should you contact with a question?
- Scope of representation: What work is included in the proposed engagement, and what is outside its scope?
- Fees and expenses: What is the fee basis, how might it change at different stages, and which case expenses could you owe?
For two or more candidates, compare relevant crash and injury experience, personal handling, communication expectations, scope, fee basis at different stages, and how expenses are defined and deducted. The official directories and rules can help verify a listing and clarify written terms, but they do not identify a statewide “best” lawyer.

Get the fee arrangement and scope in writing
If the lawyer proposes a contingency fee, South Carolina Rule 1.5(c) states: “A contingent fee agreement shall be in a writing signed by the client.” The agreement must explain how the fee is determined, including the percentages at settlement, trial, or appeal; which litigation and other expenses are deducted; whether expenses come out before or after the fee calculation; and expenses the client may be expected to pay. The rule also calls for a written closing statement describing the outcome and, if there is a recovery, the remittance and its calculation. Read the agreement before signing and ask for an explanation of any term you do not understand.
Ask the lawyer to put the work covered by the engagement in writing as well. A clear scope helps you understand what the fee covers and what questions or services may require a separate agreement.

When multiple actors may have contributed to indivisible harm, South Carolina Code § 15-38-15 is relevant to how fault and liability may be allocated. The code page distinguishes earlier text from the version effective January 1, 2026. Under the effective text, a defendant found less than 50 percent at fault is generally liable only for that defendant’s percentage of indivisible damages, subject to statutory exceptions.
This is not a case outcome prediction. The effect depends on the facts, the plaintiff’s own fault, the other actors and claims involved, and applicable exceptions. Ask a lawyer how the rule may apply to your circumstances rather than assuming it determines whether you can recover or how much.

The official sources cited here do not establish your filing deadline, claim value, insurance coverage, or eligibility for a particular case. Those questions require the governing law and facts.
