Greg’s Restorations documents a screen-used 1985 Toyota pickup and describes its own restoration and build. Its account says two trucks were used in the film and that the truck it restored had been Universal Studios’ personal truck for later films. Those production and ownership details are the shop’s account, not an independently verified production record. The shop also describes equipment differences between the first movie truck and the truck it restored, including tinted windows, a tonneau cover, one roll bar, SR5 seat embossing, a Toyota tailgate decal, light covers and blacked-out wheel-well trim.

Choose the build before choosing the truck
Set your target level of accuracy before you buy. It determines how much you should value original parts, how much custom work may be needed and which compromises are acceptable. The three useful targets are:
- Reliable driver: Prioritize sound structure, safe operation, mechanical condition and serviceability. Movie-specific accessories are optional.
- Period-inspired tribute: Preserve or restore a sound base truck, then add selected visual details such as black paint, lights, bumpers or a roll bar. Document which elements are original and which are later additions.
- Close film replica: Research the particular appearance you want to recreate and expect more time sourcing, adapting or making parts. A shop’s restoration is one documented interpretation, not a definitive factory specification for every scene.
Do not let a replica checklist persuade you to overlook a weak frame, extensive corrosion or poor prior repairs. A complete, structurally sound donor is usually a better starting point than a more photogenic truck that needs substantial repair. How to find and screen a candidate
Search broadly, verify specifically

Request clear photographs of the frame, cab, bed, suspension, drivetrain, interior, wiring and repaired areas. Ask for additional views of anything obscured by undercoating, accessories, carpeting or fresh paint. A photo set can help screen candidates, but it cannot replace an in-person inspection.
Inspect structure before appearance
Look for corrosion and evidence of repairs on the frame and body, as well as dents, poor panel fit and signs that old damage was covered rather than properly repaired. Pay close attention to the quality and extent of prior work. If you cannot confidently assess structural condition, make a professional inspection part of your buying decision rather than treating a clean exterior as evidence of a sound truck.

Greg’s Restorations says its project came from a dry climate and had little to zero rust, yet its body and bed still needed paint preparation and dent repair. The practical lesson is not that every donor will need the same work; it is that low rust does not mean a finished body, and attractive paint does not tell you what is underneath.
Evaluate the whole truck, not just the engine
Inspect mechanical condition and completeness as separate questions. A running engine does not establish that the transmission, 4×4 system, brakes, wiring or other components are sound. Ask what work has been done, who did it and whether receipts or other documentation exist. Check whether important interior pieces, trim and other parts are present, and identify modifications or donor parts that may affect the finished build.
For a serious candidate, compare the seller’s account with the physical truck and records. Have a mechanic familiar with older 4x4s examine the vehicle and produce a truck-specific list of safety, repair and restoration needs. If the seller cannot provide photographs or access to areas you consider important, account for that uncertainty in your decision rather than assuming the hidden condition is good.
Use auction examples as examples—not inventory
A Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2022 listing documented a 1985 Toyota Xtra Cab SR5 4WD tribute with a five-speed manual, gray interior, KC lights, Smittybilt bumpers and an included 1/10-scale remote-control model. That truck was sold at the auction. The listing shows one way a tribute may be presented; it is not evidence of a currently available truck or a current price benchmark.
Compare candidates on the things that drive the build
If you have more than one truck under consideration, use the same categories for each. Record what you have verified, what remains uncertain and what the uncertainty could cost to resolve.

What a faithful restoration can involve
Greg’s Restorations describes a substantial, ground-up process for its documented project. It began in 2013 and took about a year, with the completed truck unveiled for a 2015 anniversary. The work included stripping the truck to its frame, blasting chassis and axle components, soda-blasting the body, body and dent repair, repainting, wiring, drivetrain work and rebuilding the interior.

The shop says it photographed and documented the disassembly and bagged and labeled hardware so pieces could return to their original locations. That is a practical approach to a complex restoration, not a mandatory method for every job. For your project, agree with the restorer how parts, fasteners, removed assemblies and decisions will be recorded before teardown begins.
Plan for repair and replacement parts
The shop reports that some parts for its project were discontinued, some came from a donor truck and some were made in-house. That can make parts sourcing a project in its own right. Before authorizing work, ask the restorer to identify known hard-to-find items, explain the proposed source or fabrication method, and distinguish confirmed availability from an assumption that a part can be obtained.
Agree on how substitutions will be handled. A donor part may help complete a driver or tribute, while a close replica may require a more specific component or custom fabrication. Make those choices explicit in the build plan, especially where a replacement affects appearance, fit or the level of originality you want to retain.
Separate documented project details from universal specifications
The shop’s truck included Smittybilt front and rear bumpers and a roll bar, six-inch KC Daylighter off-road lights, KC fog lights, 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires, 15-inch US Wheels, a custom rubber bed mat, a custom-built 22RE engine, a ceramic-coated header and performance exhaust, and a solid axle with auto-locking hubs. It also describes restoring a five-speed transmission to original-equipment specifications, restoring the wiring harness and connectors, and rebuilding the interior.

These are details of that restoration and the shop’s replica offering, not a definitive factory specification for every scene or every 1985 pickup. Decide which details your chosen reference requires and have the shop confirm parts, fitment and any related work for your particular truck.
Think through lights, wheels and stance
The restorer says its truck retained stock suspension height while wearing 31-inch tires and 15-inch wheels. A replica can therefore appear lifted without the shop describing its suspension height as raised. Do not assume a particular stance from photographs alone: confirm the suspension configuration and wheel-and-tire setup on the candidate and in the build plan.
The shop describes four original Daylighters on its truck and lists six-inch KC Daylighters among its replica options; the auction tribute also had KC lights. These examples do not establish that a current light listing matches an original unit or fits every truck. Before buying lights, verify the exact model, brackets, wiring, vehicle compatibility and applicable road-use rules.

There is no universal restoration price for a 1985 pickup. The donor’s rust, repairs, mechanical condition, completeness and desired finish all affect the scope. Greg’s Restorations says its builds average about $50,000 to start, plus the vehicle, and can exceed $150,000 depending on condition and finish. Those are the shop’s published estimates for its work, not a current quote for your truck or a typical price guaranteed by every restorer.

Hagerty says its displayed values draw on various data sources and do not establish the insured value under a Hagerty policy. Because the report specifies a 2-door long-bed model, do not treat those amounts as direct valuations of an Xtracab or use them as current asking prices. They are dated reference figures, not a substitute for evaluating the exact truck and market you are considering.
To build a useful budget, get an inspection and a written estimate based on the actual donor and your chosen finish. Ask the shop to separate necessary structural and mechanical work from appearance upgrades, identify assumptions and parts that are not yet secured, and explain how it will handle newly discovered damage. Compare estimates by scope and condition rather than by headline total alone.
Set up the restoration so surprises are manageable
Before work starts, make a written scope that names the intended outcome, agreed appearance references, work to preserve existing components, planned replacements and any acceptable substitutions. Set a process for approving additional labor when teardown reveals hidden issues. A truck restored for regular use may sensibly retain practical or non-original solutions; a close replica may put greater weight on sourcing and visual accuracy.

- Record the baseline. Photograph the truck inside and out, including the frame, underbody, engine bay, interior, wiring and existing repairs. Keep the seller’s documents and your inspection findings with the project records.
- Agree on teardown and labeling. Decide how assemblies, hardware and parts will be photographed, identified and stored. The shop’s documented project used photographs and labeled, bagged hardware to support reassembly.
- Approve the repair plan before cosmetics. Establish the structural and mechanical work that must be completed before paint and replica accessories. Ask the shop to identify unresolved condition questions rather than presenting them as settled estimates.
- Track parts decisions. Mark each component as original, replacement, donor-sourced or fabricated, and confirm fitment before purchase or installation. This is especially useful where discontinued parts or a particular film appearance affect the choice.
- Review milestones. Request updates at agreed stages—such as after disassembly, after metal and body repairs, before paint and before final assembly—so decisions can be made while the relevant work remains visible.
- Keep final records. Retain invoices, parts information, repair photographs and descriptions of modifications. That record helps explain what was restored and what was changed if the truck is serviced or sold later.
Make the decision on condition, scope and evidence
The strongest candidate is not necessarily the most complete replica. It is the truck whose verified condition and configuration make sense for the build you can afford and maintain. Confirm the identity and paperwork, prioritize rust and repair quality, inspect mechanical systems and completeness, then price the restoration around the specific work required. Add movie details only after the base truck and the desired level of accuracy are clear.
