To find a fair price for a new car, compare the exact vehicle you want with current, regional transaction-based estimates, then get written quotes from several dealers and compare their itemized out-the-door totals. MSRP and invoice price provide useful context, but neither one proves that a particular offer is fair.
This guide focuses on U.S. purchases. Taxes, title, registration and dealer-fee rules vary by location, and there is no universal fair price or fixed discount that applies to every model and buyer.

What makes a new-car price fair?
A fair price is a defensible price for a particular vehicle, in a particular market, at a particular time—not a standard percentage below the window sticker. The right comparison accounts for the car’s year, trim, drivetrain, factory and port-installed equipment, location, current incentives and the full charges in each dealer’s offer.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with a regional estimate based on actual transactions, then use written dealer offers to see what buyers can actually negotiate for a comparable car. Treat the estimate as a benchmark, not a promise that a dealer will sell at that figure. The price may differ because of availability, popularity, incentives and dealer-specific costs or goals.

For context only, Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive reported a U.S. industry-wide average manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $51,654 for June 2026 in a release dated July 14, 2026. That dated aggregate is not a target for any specific model, trim, region or October 2026 purchase. It also does not establish a universally good discount from MSRP.
Step 1: Define the exact car you are pricing
A price for a similar-looking car is not a sound comparison if its equipment differs. Before checking estimates or contacting dealers, write down the details that identify the vehicle you want. Kelley Blue Book says its estimate reflects the selected vehicle and options; Edmunds likewise cautions that the year, make, model and options matter when generating an estimate.
- Model year, make and model
- Trim and drivetrain
- Factory options and packages
- Port-installed options, if listed
- Any dealer-installed accessories already attached to the vehicle
Use a vehicle identification number (VIN) or the dealer’s exact stock number when possible, and check that the listed equipment matches the car you would actually buy. If one quote is for a different trim or has additional options, keep it separate until the dealer provides a quote for the configuration you are comparing.
Equipment affects more than the sticker. A package can change MSRP, while dealer-installed accessories may be priced separately or included in a supplemental sticker. Ask for an itemized list rather than assuming that two cars with the same model name are equivalent.
Step 2: Check regional transaction-based estimates
Look up the exact configuration in at least one pricing service that uses transaction data. Kelley Blue Book’s Fair Purchase Price and Fair Market Range are based on actual new-vehicle transactions, are regionalized across 134 U.S. geographic regions, and are updated or verified at least weekly, according to its new-car FAQ. Edmunds’ Suggested Price—formerly called True Market Value (TMV)—estimates an average transaction price in the shopper’s area using actual transaction data; its TMV page explains the estimate.

Enter the correct year, model, trim and equipment, and use the location that reflects where you plan to buy. A broad national figure can obscure meaningful local differences. Save the estimate and the date you checked it: market conditions and incentives can change, so recheck close to purchase.
These services answer a narrower question than a dealer’s final quote. KBB’s Fair Market Range excludes taxes, title and fees. Edmunds says its Suggested Price is not an out-the-door cost. Neither estimate guarantees that a dealer has the vehicle in stock or will accept the estimated price. Use them to assess the vehicle selling price, not as a substitute for an itemized written offer.
Use more than one estimate as a cross-check
If the estimates are close, they provide a useful range for evaluating dealer offers. If they differ, check that both entries use the same equipment and geography, then note each estimate’s date and what it includes. A difference is not proof that one source is wrong: the tools estimate market prices, and their methods and coverage may not be identical.
Do not average unlike numbers just to produce a target. First make the configurations, dates and price definitions comparable. If a service gives a range, preserve the range rather than presenting its midpoint as a guaranteed fair price.
Step 3: Understand MSRP, invoice and destination charges
These figures help explain the pricing conversation, but they serve different purposes. The Edmunds guide to new-car pricing terms and the Federal Trade Commission’s vehicle pricing guidance describe the distinctions.

| Term | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| MSRP or sticker price | The manufacturer’s suggested retail price. The window sticker lists the vehicle’s base price and factory options and includes required pricing information. | Use it to understand the manufacturer’s suggested price and vehicle configuration. Dealers may sell above or below MSRP; it is not a binding sale price. |
| Invoice price | The amount shown on the manufacturer’s invoice to the dealer. | Treat it as a reference point, not a statement of the dealer’s final net cost or an automatic fair-price target. Holdbacks and factory-to-dealer incentives can affect effective cost. |
| Destination or freight | A transportation charge reflected in vehicle pricing documentation. | Check whether it is already included in the figure being quoted. Do not accept it a second time just because the quote uses an invoice-based figure. |
| Dealer-installed add-on or markup | An accessory, option, preparation charge or additional markup added by the dealer, sometimes shown on a supplemental sticker or quote. | Ask what each item is, its price and whether it is optional. Do not assume the charge is required or that the item is worth its listed price. |
| Out-the-door price | The total amount due after the vehicle price and applicable taxes and fees. | Use the itemized total to compare what each purchase would actually cost, while recognizing that local tax and registration rules differ. |
“Below invoice” does not, by itself, establish that a deal is good: invoice is not necessarily the dealer’s effective cost, and the relevant question is how the offer compares with current local transactions for the exact vehicle. Equally, an offer above MSRP is not automatically explained by the sticker; ask what is being charged and compare the full written offer with other dealers’ quotes.

Contact several dealers and ask for a written quote on the same vehicle configuration. Edmunds recommends collecting multiple offers and using the lowest credible offer to ask another dealer to match or improve it. Ronald Montoya, Edmunds Senior Consumer Advice Editor, puts the approach this way: “The best way to negotiate a car’s price is to obtain multiple offers from dealerships and use the lowest offer to either improve on the discount or match the sale price at a location closer to home.” See Edmunds’ guide to negotiating car prices.
Make the request specific enough that dealers cannot answer with mismatched vehicles or a partial price. Ask them to identify the vehicle by VIN or stock number, show the selling price before taxes and fees, list every add-on and dealer fee, state which incentives are included and provide the complete out-the-door total. Also ask whether the vehicle is available now or must be ordered.
- Choose the comparison vehicle. Identify the exact year, trim, drivetrain and options you want. If you are open to an alternative configuration, treat it as a separate comparison rather than blending it into the same price check.
- Send the same request to several dealers. Give each dealer the same configuration and ask for a written, itemized offer. Written figures make it easier to spot differences hidden by an advertised price or a verbal estimate.
- Check what the offer assumes. Ask whether the price depends on an incentive, eligibility condition, dealer financing arrangement or another stated requirement. Compare only offers whose conditions you understand and can meet.
- Inspect added charges. Have the dealer identify markups, dealer-installed accessories, preparation charges and other fees separately. Ask whether each item is optional and whether removing it changes the selling price.
- Compare the totals and availability. Confirm that the offer is for the same equipment, includes all applicable line items, and describes a vehicle available on the same terms—or clearly states that it requires an order.
- Use the strongest credible offer to negotiate. Ask another dealer to match or improve the written vehicle price, or to offer it at a location more convenient to you. Request a revised written quote so the comparison remains clear.
Step 5: Compare the whole deal, not the headline number
Put every offer on the same axes before deciding which is strongest. A low advertised price can be less useful than a higher-looking quote if the first omits a required charge or depends on an incentive you cannot claim. Conversely, an add-on that appears on one offer may be removable, so ask before treating it as an unavoidable cost.
| What to compare | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle configuration | Is this the same year, trim, drivetrain, factory equipment and port-installed equipment? | Different equipment is not a like-for-like price comparison. |
| Selling price | What is the vehicle price before taxes and fees? | This is the cleanest figure to compare with transaction-based market estimates. |
| Markup and add-ons | What dealer-added items are included, what do they cost, and can they be removed? | Separating these charges reveals whether the vehicle price itself is competitive. |
| Incentives | Which manufacturer offers are included, and what conditions apply? | Offers with different eligibility assumptions may not be comparable. |
| Taxes, title, registration and dealer fees | Are all applicable charges itemized, and are any estimates still subject to local calculation? | These charges affect the amount due but do not all belong in a vehicle-price estimate. |
| Out-the-door total | What is the complete amount due under this quote? | This is the practical total to compare before choosing where to buy. |
| Availability | Is the described vehicle on the lot now, in transit, or available only by order? | The timing and certainty of the offer may differ between an in-stock vehicle and an order. |
Keep both the selling price and the out-the-door total in your notes. The former helps answer whether the vehicle price aligns with local market estimates; the latter shows the total purchase cost in that dealer’s quote. Do not compare a pre-tax estimate from a pricing tool directly with a dealer’s total after taxes, title and fees.

How to judge a quote when the numbers disagree
The dealer’s price is above a market estimate
First confirm the estimate and quote describe the same configuration and that the quote’s selling price is being compared with an estimate that excludes taxes and fees. Then inspect markup and add-ons. Ask the dealer to remove optional items or explain the price in writing, and compare the revised offer with other written quotes. An estimate is a reference point, not a guarantee, so local availability and demand may help explain a difference without proving that the offer is the best available.
The quote is below invoice
Do not treat that label as a verdict. Invoice does not necessarily equal the dealer’s net cost, and destination may already be represented in the price figure. Compare the itemized selling price with regional transaction-based estimates and the other offers you collected. Check whether the low figure depends on conditions or excludes charges that appear elsewhere.
One dealer quotes a low monthly payment
A monthly payment is not a comparable measure of the car’s selling price or total purchase cost. Ask for the vehicle selling price before taxes and fees and the complete out-the-door total in writing. Use those figures—not a payment headline—to compare against the other offers and the market estimate.
The advertised price changes when you ask for a quote
Ask the dealer to identify each difference between the advertisement and written offer, including dealer-installed items, markup, fees and incentive assumptions. Confirm that the advertised and quoted vehicles have the same equipment. If the dealer will not provide a clear itemization, use the written offers from dealers that do as your more reliable comparison set.

The estimates or offers vary substantially
Check for different trims, options, regions, dates, add-ons and incentive eligibility before concluding that the market is unusually high or low. Recheck estimates near the purchase date because they change with market conditions. If quotes still differ after you align those factors, use each dealer’s written itemization to determine what accounts for the gap; there is no universal price or discount that resolves every case.

A practical worksheet for your decision
Keep a simple record for each estimate and offer. The same information makes differences visible and helps you avoid revisiting a quote whose assumptions were never clear.
- Vehicle: year, make, model, trim, drivetrain, options and VIN or stock number.
- Market estimate: service, region, date checked, estimate or range, and whether taxes, title and fees are excluded.
- Dealer quote: date, vehicle selling price, itemized dealer fees, each add-on or markup, incentives and conditions, and out-the-door total.
- Availability: in stock, in transit or order required.
- Open questions: any charge, equipment difference or eligibility condition the dealer has not explained.
Before accepting an offer, you should be able to explain why its vehicle selling price is reasonable against local transaction estimates, identify what raises the total above that price, and verify that the written offer covers the car you intend to buy. If one of those checks is unresolved, ask for clarification or another written quote rather than treating a sticker, invoice comparison or monthly payment as the answer.
What the available price figures cannot tell you
No single estimate establishes the fair price for every buyer. KBB’s regional transaction data and Edmunds’ area-based Suggested Price offer market context, but a specific dealer’s availability, current incentives and quote terms still matter. Neither tool’s estimate should be mistaken for a complete out-the-door quote.
The figures in this guide do not calculate a personalized target: that would require the exact configuration, location, current incentives and actual dealer offers. The June 2026 industry MSRP figure is historical market context only, not a substitute for checking the current local market for your chosen car.
