To estimate how far an electric scooter will really go, divide its usable battery energy in watt-hours (Wh) by its energy use per mile or kilometre under conditions like yours. If you do not have consumption data, treat the manufacturer’s range as a conditional benchmark—not a promise—and compare its test speed, mode, load, temperature and route with your own. Repeated rides on your usual route provide the most useful planning figure.
What determines an electric scooter’s real-world range?
Range is the distance a scooter travels before its battery is depleted. It varies with how much energy is available and how quickly the scooter uses it. Speed, rider and cargo weight, hills, stop-start riding, wind, temperature, tire pressure, surface and acceleration all affect the result. Xiaomi, for example, identifies speed, load, road conditions, start-stop frequency and ambient temperature as factors affecting range on its Electric Scooter 6 Essential product page.

There is no evidence here for a universal adjustment such as subtracting a fixed percentage from every advertised figure. A range estimate is only useful when its assumptions resemble the ride you need to make.
Calculate a range estimate from battery energy
Find the battery’s nominal capacity in Wh
Look for the battery pack’s nominal energy rating in watt-hours (Wh) in the scooter’s specifications. If the manufacturer gives nominal voltage and amp-hours instead, calculate nominal energy as:
#1 Best Overall

Wh = volts × amp-hours
Use battery energy, not motor wattage. Motor power describes the motor’s output rating; it is not a measure of how much energy the battery stores.
Divide usable energy by consumption
If you can find a trustworthy energy-use figure for a scooter under conditions similar to yours, divide usable battery energy by consumption, keeping the distance units consistent:
Estimated distance = usable battery energy (Wh) ÷ consumption (Wh per mile or kilometre)

Nominal battery capacity is not necessarily the same as energy you can use on a ride. If you do not know usable energy or comparable consumption, do not treat this calculation as a precise prediction; use the manufacturer’s test information and your own route observations instead.
Use advertised range as a benchmark, not a guarantee
Before comparing a claimed range with your commute, find out how and at what speed it was measured. Check the riding mode, rider-plus-cargo load, temperature, wind, surface, gradient and whether the route involved stops. Claims tested at different speeds or under different conditions are not directly comparable.

| Example | Published range and test conditions |
|---|---|
| Xiaomi Electric Scooter 6 Essential | The stated 25 km standard-range test uses a fully charged scooter, a 75 kg rider-and-load weight, constant 15 km/h, 25±5°C, wind no higher than 3 m/s and a flat asphalt or concrete road with a maximum incline of 5%. Source: Xiaomi product page, accessed 2026. |
| Segway E2 Pro | The scooter has a nominal 275 Wh battery. Segway states 40 km at 15 km/h in ECO mode, 35 km at 20 km/h in Standard mode and 27 km at 25 km/h in Sport mode. Tests used a full battery, 75 kg load, 25°C and average pavement. Source: Segway specifications, accessed 2026. |
The E2 Pro figures illustrate that the same scooter’s stated range changes with speed and mode. These are manufacturer test results under the listed setup, not guaranteed everyday distances.

Adjust for your route and riding conditions
Once you know the test setup, compare it with the ride you actually plan to make. A faster pace, heavier combined rider and cargo load, more climbing, frequent starts, colder weather, headwind or underinflated pneumatic tires can change energy use. Their combined effect depends on the scooter and route, so avoid applying an unsupported percentage reduction.
- Speed and mode: Compare your intended pace and riding mode with the test speed and mode.
- Load: Include the rider and carried items, not just rider weight.
- Hills and stops: Consider the route’s gradients and how often you will accelerate from a stop. A UK Department for Transport technical report describes a hill-climb test route about 650 m long with around 40 m of elevation change, including sections around 10% gradient; the described comparison used a 70 kg rider. Those details illustrate a specific test, not a universal hill adjustment. The report’s listed battery capacities of 200–705.6 Wh apply only to the sample scooters for which capacity was given, not the whole market. See the UK Department for Transport technical report (2025).
- Weather and surface: Note temperature, wind exposure and whether the route is smooth pavement, rough ground or a mix.
- Tires: For pneumatic tires, check pressure against the scooter maker’s specification. Levy Electric’s range calculator says wind, tire pressure and throttle habits can shift its projections by ±15%. That is Levy’s caveat for its estimator, not a universal error range.
Levy’s estimator also asks for battery voltage and capacity, rider weight, average top speed, outside temperature, path type and hill grade. Its example uses a 230 Wh battery and displays 10.0 miles for the conditions entered. That output belongs to the calculator’s example; it should not be transferred to a different scooter or route.
Validate the estimate on your usual route
- Start with a fully charged scooter and record the route distance.
- Note the relevant conditions: speed or mode, load, weather, hills, surface and stop-start pattern.
- Repeat the ride under comparable conditions so that the results can be compared fairly.
- Use a conservative result from your repeated rides when deciding whether the scooter has enough range for a trip.
Conditions and battery state can make available range vary from ride to ride. Repeated, comparable rides are more useful than treating one best-case trip as a dependable planning figure.

When comparing models, put the test assumptions beside the claimed distance. A scooter with the largest advertised number is not automatically the best match if its claim uses a slower speed, lighter load or easier route than your intended use.
- Battery capacity in Wh
- Whether the claim is maximum, standard or tied to a specific mode
- Test speed and mode
- Rider-and-cargo load
- Temperature and wind conditions
- Road surface, gradient and stop-start pattern
If a manufacturer does not state a condition you need to compare, treat that part of the claim as unknown rather than assuming it matches another scooter’s test.
