How to Estimate How Long an EV Can Power Your Home During an Outage

Estimate outage runtime by dividing the energy you can safely allocate to backup by the backed-up loads’ daily energy use, then verify the vehicle and equipment can supply them.

Estimate runtime by dividing the energy you make available for backup, in kilowatt-hours (kWh), by the average energy use of the loads you are powering, in kilowatts (kW). For a day-based estimate, divide available backup energy by the backed-up loads’ use in kWh per day. The result is only meaningful after you confirm that your vehicle and backup equipment can supply those loads safely and at the same time.

The runtime calculation

Use the formula that matches the way you have measured household use:

For example, if you allocate 48 kWh to backup and the loads you intend to run use 24 kWh per day, the arithmetic estimate is two days. Those figures are illustrative inputs, not a claim about a particular EV or home. Replace them with the energy your vehicle can actually supply and your own measured or estimated outage use.

Keep the units straight: kWh measures an amount of energy; kW measures the rate at which energy is being used or delivered. A vehicle can have enough stored energy for a long outage yet still be unable to run several high-demand appliances simultaneously because its output limit is too low.

Use energy over time for a changing load

Most homes do not draw the same power constantly. A refrigerator cycles, lights may be used only in the evening, and a pump may run intermittently. For runtime, the useful figure is the total energy those loads consume over a representative period, ideally a day, rather than the sum of appliance wattages treated as if every device ran continuously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have a daily total, divide the energy allocated to backup by that kWh-per-day figure. If you have only an average simultaneous load in kW, the result is hours. To convert hours to days, divide by 24, while remembering that an outage load can vary from day to day.

Build an estimate for your home

  1. Identify the backup method. Check the exact vehicle model year, trim, market, owner’s manual and any required home equipment. Establish whether you will power selected devices from vehicle outlets or use a compatible system to energize household circuits.
  2. Find the energy available at the start. Use the manufacturer’s usable-energy information and the vehicle’s indicated battery state of charge. Do not substitute the battery’s gross or advertised pack capacity for the amount the system permits you to discharge.
  3. Set aside energy you will not use for the house. Decide how much charge must remain for driving, and account for any vehicle or system discharge floor. The energy assigned to the home is the usable amount after these limits, not necessarily the vehicle’s full battery capacity.
  4. Choose the loads to keep running. List the specific circuits or appliances that matter during the outage. Separate essential needs from optional loads so you can calculate a realistic minimum-use case as well as a more comfortable one.
  5. Estimate or measure their energy use. Use household energy-monitoring data, appliance energy labels or manufacturer information where available. For variable loads, record use over a representative day if possible. Do not assume a rated wattage is the appliance’s all-day average.
  6. Calculate duration. Divide the energy reserved for backup by the selected loads’ daily kWh to estimate days. If you have an average kW instead, divide kWh by kW to estimate hours.
  7. Check delivery limits separately. Verify that the vehicle, inverter and backup equipment can support the continuous load, including the combination of appliances that may operate together. Check starting surges for motors and compressors against the equipment’s documented limits.

Use ranges when your inputs are uncertain

If you do not know whether daily outage use will be 18 or 30 kWh, calculate both cases rather than presenting a single precise duration. With 48 kWh allocated for backup, those assumptions produce about 2.7 days and 1.6 days respectively. These are arithmetic examples only; they do not account for unreported conversion losses, changing weather, vehicle settings or any other site-specific factor.

A useful estimate is therefore a scenario, not a promise: state the battery energy assigned to the home, the loads included, their assumed daily use and the reserve left in the vehicle. If any of those inputs change, the runtime changes too.

Stored energy is not the same as power output

Runtime is governed mainly by available energy and consumption. Whether a load can run at all depends on power output. A system’s continuous kW rating limits the load it can sustain, while short starting surges can matter for equipment such as pumps or compressors. An estimate that divides kWh by daily use cannot establish that the electrical system will start or safely operate every appliance on the list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the documentation for the relevant output path: a vehicle outlet, a V2L connector, or a home integration system may have different limits. Pay attention to per-outlet limits as well as an overall system rating. Do not treat the total rating as proof that any one outlet—or every outlet at once—can deliver that amount.

Ford states that the F-150 Lightning’s Pro Power Onboard system offers up to 9.6 kW from 11 power points across the frunk, bed and cab. That is a vehicle-specific outlet-output example, not evidence that plugging into those outlets can energize home wiring. Verify the ratings and instructions for the exact vehicle and connection method you intend to use.

V2L device power and V2H home backup are different

V2L: selected devices through vehicle outlets

Vehicle-to-load (V2L) supplies compatible devices through a vehicle outlet or the connector specified by the vehicle maker. It can be useful for a limited set of loads, but it is not automatically a method for backing up a home’s circuits. Follow the exact vehicle manual, use correctly rated cables and connectors, and do not improvise a connection into household wiring.

V2H: a compatible system connected to house wiring

Vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup requires more than a vehicle with an outlet or bidirectional capability. The vehicle must be compatible with the charging and home-backup equipment, and the installation must safely isolate the home from a failed grid. Without the right switching and interconnection equipment, an EV outlet is not a safe substitute for a transfer system.

For its documented F-150 Lightning backup mode, Ford’s 2025 owner’s manual identifies the Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System as required components. The system operates with the vehicle paired and plugged in when the home has lost power. The Union of Concerned Scientists’ June 2025 report likewise describes the need for compatible charging and switching equipment to isolate a backed-up home from the nonfunctioning grid.

Have a qualified electrician assess the panel, connection design and local requirements before planning to back up house wiring. The California Joint IOU VGI forum report describes installation variation arising from site conditions, including the locations of the main panel and EVSE. A setup that works at one property is not proof that the same equipment or installation will fit another.

What a published three-day estimate does—and does not—tell you

Ford says an F-150 Lightning paired with a home integration system can power a house for three days. Ford’s accompanying footnote ties that estimate to a properly equipped home with a transfer switch that disconnects it from the grid, an extended-range battery, and household use of 30 kWh per day; Ford says results vary with energy use. The publication year is not specified on the opened corporate page.

The 30 kWh-per-day assumption and three-day duration describe a particular qualified scenario, not a general EV runtime. They imply 90 kWh of household energy use across three days under those assumptions; that arithmetic is not a statement of the truck’s usable battery capacity or a guarantee that another household will get the same result. Your vehicle’s discharge limit, reserve, losses and actual backed-up consumption can change the outcome.

Confirm compatibility before relying on a model example

Availability depends on the vehicle, model year, trim, market and equipment. A feature name such as V2L or bidirectional charging is not, by itself, confirmation that a particular car can supply a particular home’s wiring.

  • Ford F-150 Lightning: Ford’s 2025 owner’s manual lists the Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System for its documented home-backup mode. Ford’s corporate estimate and its 9.6 kW outlet figure apply to the conditions and equipment described by Ford; check the exact model year and installation.
  • Kia EV9 and planned Hyundai Motor Group expansion: In a release dated November 28, 2025, Hyundai Motor Group said Kia’s U.S. V2H service had launched in February 2025 for EV9 owners. The release said Hyundai planned to introduce V2H beginning with IONIQ 9 and Kia planned EV6 compatibility for P/E models. Treat that as the manufacturer’s dated statement, not confirmation of present availability for every vehicle, trim or location.
  • Other vehicles: The Union of Concerned Scientists’ June 2025 report identifies solutions from several manufacturers and discusses the switching equipment needed for home backup. It does not make every vehicle with V2L or bidirectional charging compatible with every home system.

Before making a runtime plan, confirm what the manufacturer supports for your exact vehicle and local market, what equipment is required, and whether the installation covers selected circuits or the whole panel. Do not infer compatibility from a feature listed for a related model or another country.

Compare backup options on the details that change runtime

When comparing two vehicles or backup configurations, fill in the same information for each. If a manufacturer or installer does not state a value, leave it unresolved and ask for the relevant documentation or quote rather than estimating from another model.

What to compare Why it matters What to verify
Exact vehicle year, trim and market Backup capability and equipment can vary across versions. Owner’s manual and current manufacturer compatibility information.
Backup method Device-level V2L and home-wiring V2H are different arrangements. Whether the vehicle supports the intended connection and which loads it can supply.
Energy available after reserve This is the numerator in the runtime calculation. Usable energy, state of charge, driver reserve and system discharge cutoff.
Continuous and surge output These determine which loads can operate together and whether motor loads can start. Documented limits for the vehicle, outlet or inverter, and home equipment.
Required charging, inverter and switching hardware Home backup needs a compatible path and safe grid isolation. Exact parts, installation design and which circuits or panels are covered.
Installation and site requirements Panel and EVSE locations and other site conditions can affect the design. An electrician’s site-specific assessment and written cost quote.
Mobility during an outage Energy assigned to the home is no longer available for the same driving reserve. How much charge must remain for travel and how quickly the vehicle may be needed.

The available manufacturer and independent material does not establish comparable installation prices or universal runtime figures across vehicles. Obtain a site-specific quote and base the duration comparison on documented available energy and your own load estimate.

Common estimate errors to avoid

  • Using pack capacity as backup energy: A published battery capacity may not equal the energy the vehicle permits you to discharge. Apply the documented usable-energy and cutoff information, then keep a travel reserve.
  • Confusing kW with kWh: Output capability tells you what can run at once; stored energy and consumption determine how long it can run.
  • Adding nameplate watts as daily use: Rated power does not tell you how long a device will operate. Use energy consumed over time, especially for cycling or intermittent loads.
  • Ignoring starting demand: A device may have a brief startup surge above its normal running demand. Check both limits in the relevant equipment documentation.
  • Assuming V2L means whole-home backup: Vehicle outlets do not automatically connect safely to house wiring. Use only a supported, correctly installed home-backup system for that purpose.
  • Applying one vehicle’s settings to another: Reserve controls, discharge limits and connector instructions are model-specific. Follow the manual for the vehicle in your driveway.
  • Treating a published scenario as a guarantee: Ford’s three-day figure depends on stated vehicle and home conditions and 30 kWh of household use per day. Different loads or equipment produce a different result.

A practical worksheet to keep with your outage plan

  • Vehicle make, model year, trim and market:
  • Documented backup method and required equipment:
  • Battery energy available at outage start:
  • Energy reserved for driving and system discharge cutoff:
  • Energy allocated to backup after those limits:
  • Circuits or devices included in the estimate:
  • Estimated or measured use of those loads, in kWh per day:
  • Calculated duration: allocated backup kWh divided by daily kWh:
  • Maximum continuous output and any relevant starting-surge limits:
  • Home circuits covered and electrician-confirmed isolation method:

Recalculate if your selected loads, reserve or starting state of charge changes. For an uncertain outage, keeping a lower-use scenario in the plan makes the estimate more useful than relying on a single best-case duration.
