How to Drive an AWD SUV Safely on Snow and Ice

AWD can help an SUV get moving, but it cannot create traction. Learn how to prepare your tires and vehicle, drive smoothly, and plan for winter delays.

AWD can help an SUV move by sending engine power to more than one wheel, but it cannot create grip on snow or ice. Drive for the conditions—not for the drivetrain: choose suitable tires, reduce speed, leave extra stopping room, make smooth inputs, and postpone the trip if the road is unsafe.

What AWD can—and cannot—do on snow and ice

All-wheel drive can help an SUV get moving when the road is slippery because it can distribute engine power to multiple wheels. That benefit does not give the tires more traction than the surface allows. If the tires cannot grip, the SUV can still slide, fail to turn as expected, or take longer to stop. The National Weather Service warns that even trucks and SUVs with four-wheel drive can lose traction in snow; the same caution applies to AWD SUVs.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters most when a driver is tempted to keep a normal pace because the vehicle feels stable while accelerating. Getting underway is only one part of driving. Steering and stopping still depend on the available tire grip, and a slick patch can overwhelm it. Do not treat AWD as permission to drive at the posted limit when snow, ice, or poor visibility calls for a slower speed.

Winter crashes are not merely a theoretical concern. NHTSA reports that in 2023 there were 101,390 police-reported traffic crashes in snow/sleet conditions, including 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes. Those figures describe crashes that occurred when snow or sleet conditions were present; they do not establish that snow or sleet alone caused each crash.

Think of AWD as one part of a winter-driving setup, not a safety guarantee. The tires, road surface, speed, visibility, and your inputs all matter. AWD may help the SUV get moving, but it does not shorten stopping distances on its own or make a turn safe at any speed. The most useful question is not whether your SUV has AWD, but whether its tires and your driving pace suit the road you are actually on.

Decide whether to drive before setting off

Postpone a trip when conditions are poor

Check weather and traffic conditions before leaving. If roads are in poor condition, delay nonessential travel rather than relying on AWD to make the trip safe. A vehicle’s capabilities cannot remove the risks created by slick roads, limited visibility, or conditions that are deteriorating.

Reconsider the trip if forecasts or current road reports indicate conditions are poor, or if visibility is likely to make safe travel difficult. A delay is a practical safety decision, not a failure to prepare the SUV. Even a well-equipped vehicle can encounter a stretch of road where the available grip or sight distance is inadequate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan a necessary trip around the conditions

For a trip that cannot wait, choose a route and allow extra time so you do not feel pressured to drive quickly. Tell someone your route and expected arrival time. Check conditions again before departure, since a route that looked manageable earlier may have changed. Carry supplies in case the trip takes longer than expected or you become stranded.

Build the extra time into the plan before you start. Rushing to make up time can undermine the slow, smooth driving that slick roads require. Keep the route simple where possible, and let someone know if conditions force a significant change or delay. No particular route or schedule removes winter risk, so remain ready to stop or turn back if conditions worsen.

Set up the tires for the conditions

Choose a tire category suited to the expected weather

Tire type affects the grip available to the SUV. NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. All-season tires provide some mud-and-snow capability, but that is not the same as being the best choice for deep snow. Summer tires are not designed for below-freezing temperatures or snow and ice.

Choose tires based on the conditions you expect to encounter, while following the vehicle manufacturer’s size and specification requirements. A tire that fits the wheel is not automatically an approved fit for the SUV. Check the owner’s manual and tire placard before buying or installing a different tire type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing options, start with the kind of winter conditions you regularly face: deep snow, below-freezing temperatures, or milder conditions where all-season tires may provide some mud-and-snow capability. That is a category comparison, not a promise that one tire will suit every driver or road. Confirm that the tire’s size and other specifications are compatible with your specific SUV before purchase, and ask the tire retailer to verify the vehicle requirements if anything is unclear.

Do not choose only by the AWD label or by the tire’s appearance. The useful comparison is between an appropriate tire category for the expected conditions and a specification approved for the vehicle. NHTSA’s guidance supports winter tires as more effective than all-seasons in deep snow; it does not identify a particular brand or retailer as best.

Fit a matched set when your manual requires it

Follow the instructions for your specific SUV rather than assuming all AWD systems have identical tire rules. An owner’s manual excerpt in a NHTSA-hosted document directs drivers to install a complete set of four winter tires at the same time and match their diameter, brand, construction, and tread pattern. That is manual-specific guidance, not a universal specification for every AWD vehicle. Use your own owner’s manual and placard to determine the required combination.

If your manual calls for four matching winter tires, do not treat replacing only one or two as an equivalent setup. The cited manual calls for a complete set installed at the same time, with matching characteristics. Other vehicles may specify differently, so check before changing tires or mixing types. If you cannot confirm what is permitted, ask a qualified tire professional to interpret the vehicle’s requirements rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check pressure, tread, and visible damage

Check tire pressure when the tires are cold and use the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the tire placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire as the vehicle’s recommended setting. Inspect the tread and sidewalls, and look for damage before driving. A tire’s category alone does not tell you whether that tire is in suitable condition.

Include this check in your pre-trip routine, especially before a longer winter drive. Confirm pressure while the tires are cold, then look over the tread and sidewalls for visible problems. If a tire appears damaged or you are unsure whether its condition is safe, have it checked before relying on it in winter conditions. Keep the manufacturer’s recommendation as the reference point; a number printed on the tire is not a substitute for the vehicle’s placard or manual.

Prepare the SUV and clear your view

Before a winter trip, make sure the systems you rely on to see and be seen are ready. Check the lights, wipers, defrosters, washer fluid, and coolant. Use washer fluid appropriate for the vehicle and climate, and replace wiper blades if they are not clearing the windshield effectively.

Clear snow and ice from the windows and from vehicle surfaces, including the roof, lights, sensors, and backup camera. Snow left on the roof or around visibility equipment can obstruct what you need to see. Check that floor mats are secured and cannot slide into the pedals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a snow brush and ice scraper accessible rather than buried beneath luggage. Clearing the vehicle is part of preparing to drive, not a task to leave until visibility becomes a problem on the road.

Make this a complete walk-around rather than clearing only a small area of the windshield. Remove snow and ice from the surfaces named above so your view and the vehicle’s lights and sensors are not obstructed. Check that the defroster, wipers, and washer system are ready to use before you set off; discovering a visibility problem after snow has begun accumulating is a harder time to deal with it.

Secure floor mats after cleaning the interior, and check that nothing can interfere with the accelerator or brake pedals. Put the scraper and brush somewhere reachable from the cabin, and make sure the emergency supplies are not inaccessible under a load of luggage. Small preparation steps help you avoid preventable problems when it is cold, visibility is limited, or the trip takes longer than expected.

Drive at a pace that leaves room to react

Reduce speed and increase following distance

Slow down for the actual surface and visibility, even when the road’s posted speed limit is higher. NHTSA advises that slick roads make it harder to control or stop a vehicle and recommends increasing following distance. More space gives you additional time to respond and more room to slow down without abrupt braking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Begin braking earlier than you would on dry pavement. Avoid sudden steering or braking inputs, and do not accelerate sharply. The National Weather Service’s winter-driving guidance is direct: “Drive slower than normal and leave more room between you and surrounding vehicles. DO NOT use cruise control, brake quickly or make sharp turns.”

There is no single speed or following gap that fits every winter road. Adjust to the surface and visibility you have, and leave more room than you would on dry pavement. If the SUV ahead slows, starts to slide, or encounters an obstacle, the added space gives you more time to respond without a panicked stop. When conditions change, reassess your pace instead of assuming that the speed that felt manageable a few minutes ago remains appropriate.

Use smooth controls and keep cruise control off

Accelerate gently, steer smoothly, and make turns gradually. Quick changes in direction or speed can demand more grip than a slick surface provides. Do not use cruise control on slippery surfaces: manage speed yourself so you can respond to changing conditions.

Approach a curve with a cautious pace and make steering changes gradually rather than waiting until you are in the turn and then correcting sharply. Similarly, begin slowing early instead of relying on sudden braking at the last moment. Smooth inputs give you a better chance of staying within the grip available, though they cannot guarantee that a slick road will not cause a loss of traction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for less-obvious ice

Pay particular attention to shaded pavement, curves, and overpasses, where ice may be present. Rain or pavement that looks merely wet near freezing can also signal a possible ice hazard. Adjust speed and inputs to the possibility of reduced traction rather than waiting for a slide to confirm the road is slick.

A road can look wet without providing the grip you expect, especially near freezing. Treat these areas as potential hazards before you reach them: ease off speed, avoid abrupt maneuvers, and leave yourself room to respond. The point is not to identify every icy patch in advance, but to drive with enough margin that an unexpected slick area does not immediately require a sharp correction.

Give snowplows room

Do not crowd or travel beside a snowplow. Plows may make wide turns, stop frequently, or leave the roadway. Keep enough distance to allow the operator to work and to give yourself time to react to the plow’s movement.

A plow’s movement may not match the path of an ordinary vehicle, so do not assume it will turn or stop where you expect. Resist the urge to pass or linger alongside it when that would put you close to its movement. Give it room and keep your own pace controlled.

What to do if the SUV starts to skid

  1. Stay calm and ease off the accelerator. Avoid a sudden reaction that adds another abrupt input while the SUV is sliding.
  2. Steer toward the direction the front of the car should go. Make a controlled correction rather than a sharp turn.
  3. If the SUV has ABS, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. Do not pump the brakes when ABS is operating.

These steps are general guidance, not a substitute for the instructions in your vehicle’s manual. If poor visibility makes it unsafe to continue driving, pull over and stop until visibility improves.

Do not respond to a skid by making a series of sharp steering or braking moves. The guidance is to remain calm, ease off the accelerator, and steer toward where the front of the vehicle should go. If ABS is equipped, keep steady pressure on the brake pedal rather than pumping it. Review the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific instructions so you know what systems your SUV has and how its manufacturer says to use them.

If the concern is visibility rather than a skid, do not try to press on simply because the SUV has AWD. Pull over and stop until visibility improves, choosing a place where you can stop safely. If the road or storm makes continued travel unsafe, delay the trip or wait for conditions to improve.

Carry supplies for a delay or a breakdown

NHTSA recommends keeping winter supplies in the vehicle. Assemble items for clearing snow, making yourself visible, staying warm, and handling basic needs while waiting. A practical checklist includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper
  • Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter
  • Jumper cables and a flashlight
  • Warning devices and a first aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Phone and charger
  • Water, food, and any needed medicine

Check that the items are present and usable before a trip. The list is a starting point for winter readiness, not a guarantee that a packaged kit contains everything you need.

Think through what each item is for when assembling the supplies: a shovel, broom, and scraper help with snow and ice; abrasive material is among NHTSA’s suggested items; and a flashlight and warning devices can support visibility if you are delayed. Blankets, food, water, medicine, and a charged phone address basic needs during a wait. A prebuilt emergency kit may be convenient, but check its contents against this list and add anything necessary that is missing.

Keep supplies organized so you can reach them without unloading the vehicle in poor conditions. Check that the phone and charger are available and that medicines you may need are included. The goal is to be prepared for a delay, not to assume that a particular kit guarantees rescue or makes it safe to travel through a storm.

If you become stranded

If the vehicle is stuck or stopped in snow, keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow. NHTSA advises running the engine only sporadically to warm the vehicle; do not leave it running for long periods with the windows closed or in an enclosed space. Use the supplies you brought to stay prepared while waiting, and keep your phone available for necessary communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snow around the exhaust pipe is a specific hazard to address, so check it and clear it if needed before running the engine. Follow NHTSA’s advice to run the engine only sporadically to warm the vehicle, rather than leaving it on for long periods with the windows closed. Never run it in an enclosed space. Keep the phone available, use supplies as needed, and communicate your situation when you can.

Vehicle-specific limits matter

AWD layouts and traction-control behavior vary by vehicle. Tire restrictions and chain fitment can also differ, so do not assume equipment that works on one SUV is suitable for another. Follow the owner’s manual, tire placard, and local road rules for your vehicle. This guidance is general U.S.-oriented winter-driving advice; the safest choice when conditions make travel unsafe is to delay the trip.

In particular, do not install chains based on another vehicle’s setup or a general assumption about AWD. Check the manual for restrictions and fitment information and follow local requirements. Likewise, do not transfer a tire specification or winter-tire matching rule from another SUV to yours. When the manual, placard, or local rules are unclear, verify them before setting out rather than improvising on the roadside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AWD make an SUV safe to drive on snow and ice?

No. AWD can distribute engine power and help the SUV get moving, but it cannot create tire grip. SUVs can still lose traction, steer poorly, or take longer to stop on slick surfaces. Choose suitable tires, slow down, and leave extra stopping room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are winter tires better than all-season tires for an AWD SUV?

NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. All-season tires provide some mud-and-snow capability, while summer tires are not designed for below-freezing temperatures or snow and ice. Check your SUV’s manual and tire placard for approved tire size and specifications.

Should I put winter tires on all four wheels of an AWD SUV?

Follow the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle. A manual excerpt in a NHTSA-hosted document calls for a complete set of four winter tires installed at the same time and matched by diameter, brand, construction, and tread pattern, but that is vehicle-specific guidance rather than a universal rule.

What tire pressure should I use in winter?

Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure on the tire placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire as the recommended setting.

Should I use cruise control on snow or ice?

No. The National Weather Service advises against using cruise control on slippery surfaces. Manage speed yourself, drive more slowly than normal, and leave more room between vehicles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my AWD SUV starts to skid?

Stay calm, ease off the accelerator, and steer toward the direction the front of the vehicle should go. If the SUV has ABS, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal rather than pumping it. Follow your owner’s manual for vehicle-specific instructions.

Can I use tire chains on any AWD SUV?

No general chain recommendation fits every SUV. Chain fitment and restrictions vary by vehicle, so check the owner’s manual and local road rules before using chains.

What should I do if snow or poor visibility makes driving unsafe?

Postpone nonessential travel when roads are in poor condition. If visibility becomes too poor to drive safely, pull over and stop until it improves. For a necessary trip, check weather and traffic conditions, plan a route, tell someone your expected arrival, and carry winter supplies.

The Bottom Line

AWD may help an SUV get moving, but tires and available road grip still determine how well it can steer and stop. Fit tires suited to the conditions and approved for your vehicle, check them and prepare the SUV before departure, then slow down, leave extra space, and use smooth inputs. Keep cruise control off on slippery roads, give snowplows room, and delay the trip or stop safely if conditions make travel unsafe.
