A single MPG figure, safety award or warranty-duration headline cannot establish which SUV will cost less or protect you better. This guide uses U.S. sources and explains how to make a like-for-like comparison without assuming a particular buyer, vehicle or fuel price.
Set up a fair comparison before looking at the numbers
Start with a shortlist of SUVs that could serve the same purpose. A small crossover and a large, heavier SUV may both be called SUVs, but comparing their ratings as though they were interchangeable can mislead. NHTSA explains that its comparisons account for vehicle class and curb weight. Choose candidates in a similar size and use class where possible, and record the details that can affect a result.

- Model year: Keep it the same where practical. A result for one year does not automatically establish the result for a later redesign or update.
- Trim and drivetrain: Record the exact version, including whether it is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Equipment and configuration may affect fuel-economy data, safety features or the applicability of a rating.
- Build date: Note it when available, particularly when checking IIHS results. A rating page may state that its result applies only to certain model years or vehicles built after a specified date.
- New or used: Mark the vehicle’s status. A used SUV’s remaining warranty depends on its documents, age and mileage, not simply the coverage described for a new vehicle.
A comparison worksheet can use one row per exact configuration, with separate columns for city, highway and combined fuel economy; energy use and personalized annual fuel cost; NHTSA rating and recall checks; IIHS categories; and factory warranty terms. Keep source and applicability notes with the entry so you can tell whether two figures actually describe comparable vehicles.

Before researching, decide which qualities matter most in your use. A buyer with a long commute may give personalized fuel cost particular weight; a household installing child seats may look closely at IIHS child-seat ease of use; and a shopper considering a used SUV needs to establish remaining coverage. This does not change the underlying ratings or warranty language. It helps you compare the evidence against your own priorities without pretending there is one universal winner.

Keep unconfirmed details visible rather than filling them in by inference. For example, if a listing names a trim but not a build date, record the date as unknown and check the vehicle documentation if the IIHS page makes the date relevant. The same discipline applies to warranty details: if the documents do not state a repair condition clearly, ask for the applicable written terms.
How do I compare SUV gas mileage?
Start with official fuel-economy information
Use the official EPA fuel-economy information for the exact model year and configuration. Record city, highway and combined estimates rather than relying on one number. Also note the energy-use information shown for the vehicle. The mix of city and highway driving matters: a shopper whose routine is mostly stop-and-go traffic should not treat a highway estimate as their expected result.
FuelEconomy.gov provides personalized estimates intended to account for a driver’s likely annual mileage and fuel price. Use those estimates when available instead of assuming all owners travel the same distance or pay the same amount for fuel. The annual fuel-cost figure shown on a government label is an assumption-based example, not a promise of an individual bill.

If one estimate uses one annual mileage or fuel price and another uses different assumptions, the resulting dollar figures are not a like-for-like comparison. Note your expected route mix too, since a mostly-city routine and a mostly-highway routine may not align equally with each vehicle’s city and highway estimates.
Interpret the dollars as an estimate, not a ranking by themselves
For illustration, an EPA/NHTSA sample label lists 24 city/36 highway MPG and an annual fuel cost of $777. That is an undated example label, not a current SUV average, a prediction for a particular SUV, or a personalized forecast. Do not use it to claim that SUVs generally have those ratings or costs.
For your own shortlist, keep the assumptions visible: annual miles, fuel price and expected route mix. If you change one of them, recalculate or refresh the personalized estimate rather than carrying the old dollar figure forward. A lower annual estimate under one set of assumptions does not establish the same cost advantage for a driver with different mileage or fuel prices.
When candidates have different city, highway and combined ratings, compare the complete set instead of selecting whichever number looks best. Use the combined value as a useful reference, then ask whether the rating’s driving mix resembles your own. The personalized dollar estimate is more relevant to budgeting, while the underlying ratings help explain how the vehicles differ across driving conditions.

Think of the label as a common starting point, not an exact forecast. EPA/NHTSA labels provide estimates and direct shoppers to FuelEconomy.gov for estimates personalized to their driving. They cannot promise what a specific owner will spend, because the annual cost depends on assumptions that may not match that owner’s mileage and fuel price. Keep any estimate tied to the assumptions used when you compare it.
The available official information does not establish a current, representative SUV-wide average for fuel economy or annual fuel cost. Avoid turning a sample label into an industry benchmark or using a fleet projection as a current estimate for the SUVs on your list. For a model comparison, look up each candidate’s exact configuration and use your own assumptions.
Which SUV has the best safety rating?
There is no defensible universal answer from an SUV label alone. Check the exact model year and configuration, and treat ratings as evidence to inspect rather than a complete summary of real-world risk. NHTSA and IIHS assess safety through different resources and categories, so using both gives a fuller picture than selecting a vehicle based on one star total or award.
Check NHTSA ratings and recalls
Look up each candidate in NHTSA’s Vehicle Comparison Tool and rating/recall resource. The tool brings 5-Star Safety Ratings and recall information together. Review the available rating details, including frontal, side and rollover context where shown, rather than stopping at the overall star result. Keep the class and curb-weight context in mind when comparing vehicles; a star rating should not be treated as an absolute score that erases differences between unlike vehicles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck recall information for the vehicle you are considering, not just the model name in general. A rating is not a substitute for checking whether a specific vehicle has an unresolved recall. For a used SUV, use the vehicle’s identifying details in the official lookup and resolve any open recall question before treating the comparison as complete.
Keep NHTSA findings in their proper role: the comparison tool is a place to review ratings and recall information, not a substitute for confirming which exact vehicle is in front of you. Record what the lookup establishes and whether a recall question remains. For used inventory, checking the individual vehicle helps avoid assuming that a general model-level result answers its recall status.
Cross-check IIHS categories and applicability
Use the IIHS rating page for the relevant SUV class and inspect the individual results for crashworthiness, headlights, crash-prevention systems and child-seat ease of use. An award can help identify a strong overall result, but it does not replace checking those categories individually. A buyer who frequently drives at night, relies on driver-assistance features or regularly installs child seats may weigh different categories more heavily.

Read the rating page’s applicability notes. Confirm the model year covered and any build-date limitation before transferring a result to a specific vehicle. If the page distinguishes versions or says that a result applies only after a production change, match that condition against the SUV under consideration.

Use a category-by-category record rather than compressing everything into an award name. Crashworthiness, headlights, crash prevention and child-seat usability address distinct aspects of the IIHS results. Two SUVs may each have a prominent award or rating, yet the category details and applicability notes still matter to a buyer deciding which evidence aligns with their needs. NHTSA’s 5-Star framework and IIHS category results should be recorded as separate evidence, not treated as interchangeable scores.
Do not transfer a result across years or builds just because the model name is unchanged. The IIHS rating pages for small, midsize and large SUVs state the applicable model year and, in some cases, build-date conditions. If a page’s note does not clearly cover the exact configuration you are evaluating, leave that result qualified rather than presenting it as definitive.
What should I compare in an SUV warranty?
Compare the written factory warranty documents, not only a salesperson’s summary or a headline such as “long coverage.” Duration is only one dimension. The documents determine which systems and components are covered, what the owner must do to preserve coverage, and how a repair claim is handled.
- Time and mileage limits: Record both limits and how the documents describe when coverage begins. Do not compare durations without also recording the mileage cap.
- Covered components: Identify which parts and systems the warranty actually covers. A broad label does not establish that every repair is included.
- Exclusions and conditions: Note excluded items, maintenance obligations and any conditions that affect coverage.
- Repair process: Check where covered work can be performed, what approval or documentation is required, and how claims are handled.
- Owner costs: Look for deductibles or other costs the owner may have to pay when seeking covered repairs.
- Written evidence: Get material promises in writing and keep the warranty documents with the vehicle records.
Use the same checklist for every candidate. If a detail is unclear or absent from the document you have, ask the seller or manufacturer for the applicable written terms rather than assuming that a similarly named warranty has the same coverage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Put the actual documents side by side and compare the same items in the same order. One warranty may emphasize a long time limit, while another document may make the covered components, exclusions, maintenance duties or claims process easier to identify. The comparison should capture both what is promised and what conditions apply. A long headline duration alone cannot show whether a repair you care about is covered or what you would need to do to make a claim.
Ask specifically about any owner-paid amount and any repair or approval requirements that are not clear from the summary. The goal is not to assume that a particular term is favorable or unfavorable; it is to know what the contract requires before treating the warranty as a meaningful difference between SUVs. Keep the written answer with the document so the comparison remains verifiable later.

Is an extended car warranty worth it?
First identify what is being offered. The Federal Trade Commission’s March 2023 consumer alert explains: “An auto service contract is a contract to pay for some repairs or services.” Such contracts are sometimes called extended warranties, but the FTC says they are not warranties as defined by federal law. An auto service contract is separately purchased, so compare it as an additional product rather than treating it as part of the SUV’s included manufacturer warranty.
Compare the service contract’s incremental value
Before deciding, set the factory warranty beside the proposed contract and identify what the contract adds, when it starts and when it ends. If it begins while factory protection is still active, some protection may overlap. A contract’s broad description does not establish that it will pay for the repairs a particular owner is concerned about.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- List the repairs or systems covered and compare them with existing factory protection.
- Read exclusions and any maintenance, authorization or repair-network requirements.
- Record the deductible and any other owner-paid costs for a claim.
- Confirm the contract’s start date, end point, provider and price in writing.
- Ask how a claim is submitted and which repair facilities can perform covered work.
Do not assume that a contract described as broader is automatically worth its price. Its value depends on the additional coverage, timing, exclusions, claim conditions and cost in the specific written terms. Compare those details before signing rather than deciding from the “extended warranty” label.
Make the comparison concrete: write down the factory coverage that remains at the proposed contract’s start, then identify the contract’s additional covered repairs and any time when the two overlap. Next, compare the purchase price and deductible with the services and conditions actually promised. This checklist does not predict whether you will need a repair; it helps you judge the contract on its terms rather than on its label or a general promise of peace of mind.
Confirm who is responsible for the contract and how claims work. Record the provider’s identity, any repair-network limits, approval steps, exclusions and required records. A contract that sounds comprehensive in a sales explanation may still impose conditions or exclude a particular repair. If the provider or claims process is unclear, get the written terms before deciding whether the incremental protection justifies the price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify warranty coverage on a used SUV
For a used SUV, establish what coverage remains on that particular vehicle. The original new-vehicle warranty description alone cannot tell you whether a time or mileage limit has already been reached or whether a particular term applies to a later owner. Ask for the actual warranty documents and check the vehicle’s age and mileage against the stated limits.
- Read the dealer’s Buyers Guide. Use it together with the warranty documents; do not rely on a verbal description as a replacement for either.
- Identify the coverage being represented. Distinguish any remaining manufacturer warranty from dealer coverage or a separately purchased service contract.
- Confirm expiration by time and mileage. Determine when each applicable term began and when its limit will be reached, using the written terms and vehicle records.
- Check conditions and transfer details. Review required maintenance, exclusions, repair procedures and any relevant transfer or remaining-coverage terms.
- Keep the documents. Retain the Buyers Guide, warranty paperwork and any contract so you can refer to the actual coverage if a repair is needed.
Do not assume that a used SUV has the same coverage as a new one simply because the model has a factory warranty. Confirm the relevant start date, current mileage and remaining time or mileage limit, and distinguish the coverage source. The FTC’s used-car guidance points shoppers to the dealer’s Buyers Guide; review that along with the warranty paperwork so you know what the seller is representing and what the written terms say.

Put the comparison together without inventing a total-cost winner
Fuel use, safety evidence and warranty exposure answer different questions. Fuel estimates depend on personal mileage, route mix and fuel prices. Safety results depend on test category and exact vehicle applicability. Warranty costs depend on the written terms and, for a separate contract, its price and conditions. Without candidate vehicles and those buyer-specific details, an overall “cheapest SUV” or “best SUV” ranking would not be supported.
| Dimension | Compare | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel economy | City, highway and combined estimates; energy use; annual-cost assumptions; your annual miles and route mix | Treating one label’s annual dollar estimate as a universal cost |
| Safety | Exact model year, trim and build date; NHTSA stars and recalls; IIHS crash tests, headlights, crash prevention and child-seat usability | Comparing unlike classes as though a rating were an absolute score, or treating an award as every relevant detail |
| Factory warranty | Time and mileage limits, covered systems, exclusions, repair process, owner costs and remaining coverage where relevant | Comparing only the headline duration |
| Service contract | Incremental coverage, start date, exclusions, deductible, repair conditions, provider and price | Assuming “extended warranty” means factory warranty or that broader coverage is automatically worth its cost |
Finish by recording the evidence and its limits for every candidate. If one SUV has a favorable fuel estimate but an IIHS result that applies only to a different build date, flag the mismatch instead of silently treating the results as equivalent. If warranty paperwork does not establish a coverage detail, mark it as unconfirmed and seek the applicable document before relying on it.
Keep the comparison auditable: save or note the official page or document used, the vehicle configuration it describes, and any assumptions behind the dollar estimate. That way, a later change in fuel price, mileage assumption or candidate vehicle does not get confused with a change in the underlying vehicle data. For a model-by-model ranking, first identify the candidates and verify each exact configuration against current EPA, NHTSA, IIHS and manufacturer warranty information.
A practical checklist for your shortlist
- Are all candidates in a comparable size and use class?
- Have you recorded each SUV’s model year, trim, drivetrain and relevant build-date information?
- Do your fuel-economy entries include city, highway and combined estimates plus the assumptions behind any annual cost?
- Have you personalized estimates to your likely annual mileage, fuel price and driving mix?
- Have you checked NHTSA ratings and recalls for the exact candidates and reviewed available underlying test context?
- Have you checked IIHS category results and verified that their model-year and build-date notes apply?
- Have you compared factory warranty documents by coverage and conditions, not duration alone?
- If considering a service contract, have you separated its terms and price from included factory coverage?
- For a used SUV, have you checked the Buyers Guide and established remaining coverage and expiration limits?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I compare SUV gas mileage fairly?
Look up the exact model year and configuration in official EPA fuel-economy information. Record city, highway and combined estimates and energy use, then use FuelEconomy.gov to personalize an annual cost estimate to your likely mileage and fuel price. Keep the assumptions consistent across candidates.
Which SUV has the best safety rating?
There is no universal answer without specific vehicles and configurations. Check NHTSA ratings and recall information, including available frontal, side and rollover context, then cross-check IIHS crashworthiness, headlights, crash-prevention and child-seat ease-of-use results. Verify the model year and any build-date restrictions.
What does an SUV warranty cover?
The written warranty determines the covered components, exclusions, time and mileage limits, maintenance or other conditions, repair process and possible owner-paid costs. Compare those terms directly instead of relying only on a duration headline or sales summary.
Is an extended car warranty the same as the factory warranty?
No. The FTC’s March 2023 consumer alert describes an auto service contract as a contract to pay for some repairs or services; it may be called an extended warranty, but it is separately purchased and is not a warranty as defined by federal law. Compare its incremental coverage, overlap, exclusions, deductible, provider and price.
How can I check warranty coverage on a used SUV?
Review the dealer’s Buyers Guide and the actual warranty documents. Confirm which coverage remains, when it began, and when time or mileage limits expire. Separate remaining manufacturer coverage from dealer coverage or a separately purchased service contract.
The Bottom Line
Compare exact SUV configurations, not broad model labels: use official EPA data and personalized fuel-cost assumptions, review NHTSA ratings and recalls alongside applicable IIHS categories, and read the written factory warranty. Treat any service contract as a separate purchase. Without the specific vehicles and buyer assumptions, a universal cheapest or safest SUV ranking is not supported.
