Compare the exact truck you plan to use with the trailer’s loaded weight and the truck’s real occupants, cargo, accessories, and hitch. A truck’s advertised maximum towing capacity is only one limit: tongue or pin weight also uses payload, and the loaded truck and trailer must stay within applicable GVWR, axle, GCWR, and hitch ratings.
Why the biggest advertised tow rating may not be the right comparison
A tow rating applies to a particular vehicle configuration and specified equipment, not automatically to every pickup with the same model name. Engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain, towing package, and installed options can affect the applicable figures. Manufacturer maximums may also depend on stated assumptions or required equipment.
So compare the ratings for each specific truck, not two model-line headlines. Use the vehicle’s owner manual and certification labels, plus the manufacturer’s towing guide or VIN-specific lookup where available. The guidance available for these sources is not uniform across every model year: for example, Ford’s cited towing guide is for model year 2024, while Toyota’s cited Tacoma information is explicitly for model year 2026. Check the current information for the truck’s own year and configuration.
Know which rating answers which question
| Rating or term | What it limits | What to count or verify |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | What the truck carries | People, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware, and trailer tongue or pin load all use payload. The available amount depends on the specific truck and its equipment. |
| GVWR | The maximum loaded weight of the truck | Check the truck with its occupants, cargo, equipment, and the load imposed by the trailer. |
| GAWR | The maximum load permitted on an individual axle | Check front and rear axle loads separately; staying under GVWR alone does not prove that both axles are within their ratings. |
| GCWR | The maximum combined weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer for the applicable configuration | Compare the actual combined weight with the vehicle-specific rating. |
| Trailer weight rating or towing capacity | The maximum trailer weight specified for a particular truck configuration and equipment | Use the applicable manufacturer rating and its conditions, rather than a model-line maximum. |
| Tongue or pin weight | The vertical load the trailer places on the hitch | This load is carried by the truck and counts against payload; the truck and hitch also have separate limits. |
How to compare two trucks for the same trailer
- Identify each truck precisely. Record model year, engine, axle ratio, cab and bed, drivetrain, packages, and installed accessories. Look up ratings in the owner manual, certification labels, manufacturer towing guide, or VIN-specific tool.
- Use the trailer’s loaded weight. Include its cargo and equipment; an empty or brochure weight does not represent the weight you intend to tow.
- Work out the truck’s real load. Count occupants, bed cargo, aftermarket equipment, hitch hardware, and the trailer’s tongue or pin load. Compare the resulting truck load with payload, GVWR, and the front and rear GAWRs.
- Check the combined and hitch limits. Compare the loaded truck-and-trailer combination with GCWR. Separately compare trailer weight and tongue or pin load with the truck’s and hitch’s applicable limits, and confirm any manufacturer-required towing equipment.
- Apply the same assumptions to both candidates. The better match is the exact truck that accommodates your intended loaded combination while meeting every applicable limit—not necessarily the truck with the larger advertised maximum.
What to do when a rating or actual weight is unclear
Do not treat an unverified estimate as a confirmed fit. Check the truck’s labels and vehicle-specific manufacturer information, and weigh the loaded truck and trailer if you need actual weights. A tongue-weight scale can help measure the trailer’s vertical load, but it does not replace the truck’s payload, axle, GVWR, GCWR, or hitch ratings. When a measurement or rating is unavailable, resolve it before relying on the combination; do not assume that passing one limit means the others are satisfied.

A practical comparison worksheet
For each truck, collect the same information before deciding:
- Exact model year and configuration, including installed towing equipment
- Applicable payload, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, GCWR, trailer rating, and hitch limits
- Loaded trailer weight and tongue or pin load
- Truck occupants, cargo, accessories, and hitch hardware
- Any conditions or assumptions attached to the manufacturer’s ratings
There is no model-to-model winner without a particular truck pair and a defined load. The useful comparison is whether each exact truck can carry and tow your actual combination without exceeding any of its applicable ratings.
