Ask for written quotes for the same car variant and registration location, and compare loans using the same amount and term. A lower EMI or premium is not, by itself, proof that an offer costs less or provides equivalent cover.
Start by fixing the comparison
Before collecting prices, make the offers comparable. A quote for a different variant, registration location, down payment, loan duration or insurance cover answers a different question. Write down the inputs you want each dealer, lender and insurer to use, then keep them consistent.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Car: same make, model and exact variant.
- Registration: the same intended city or state. Road tax and registration charges depend on jurisdiction.
- Payment plan: the same down payment, expected loan principal and loan term.
- Insurance: equivalent cover, add-ons, deductibles and relevant claim terms.
Keep a separate record for the upfront amount and the total paid over the loan period. The first answers whether you can meet the cost of taking delivery; the second shows the cumulative cost of buying with credit. Combining them without checking what is already included can lead to double-counting.
What an on-road quote should show
An advertised or ex-showroom price is not a complete comparison of the amount due to take delivery. Ask each dealer for a written, itemized final quotation for your chosen variant and registration location. The quote should make it possible to see the vehicle price, statutory charges, insurance and optional or dealer-added items separately.

| Quote line | What to check |
|---|---|
| Vehicle price | Confirm the make, model and exact variant. Compare the same vehicle across offers. |
| Road tax | Check the amount and applicable rule with the transport authority for the intended registration location. |
| Registration charges | Ask what the line covers and verify the applicable charge with the relevant local authority. |
| Hypothecation charge | If the car is financed, ask whether a separate charge is included and how it is described in the quote. The applicable fee depends on local rules. |
| Insurance | Identify the policy and cover being quoted; do not compare its price as if all policies provide the same cover. |
| Optional products or dealer-added items | Ask what each item is, whether it is optional, and whether removing it changes the final amount. |
These are categories to inspect, not a universal list of amounts or a national fee schedule. For example, Meghalaya’s transport department publishes state-specific information on registration and hypothecation fees and says car road tax depends on the sale amount. That example illustrates why local charges must be checked for the actual registration location; it should not be used as a price guide for another state.
Verify charges instead of guessing
Ask the dealer to explain any line you do not recognize and identify which charges are statutory and which are optional. Then check statutory tax and registration amounts with the transport department responsible for the intended registration location. Do not assume that a charge, fee or tax timing shown for one state applies throughout India.
If two dealers quote different totals, compare corresponding lines rather than just the bottom figure. One quote may include an optional product or a different insurance policy; another may list a charge separately. A written breakdown makes those differences visible and gives you a basis to request a corrected, like-for-like quote.

Compare loan offers by total credit cost, not EMI alone
An EMI is a periodic payment, not a complete measure of what borrowing costs. The loan term, principal, interest-rate structure and fees affect the total repayment. Ask more than one lender for written offers using the same principal, down payment and duration, then compare the complete terms.
The Reserve Bank of India’s notification says banks should publish the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), or a similar representation of the total cost of credit on a loan to an individual borrower, so customers can compare costs across products and lenders. The notification’s implementation date was April 1, 2015; it is evidence for the comparison purpose of APR disclosure, not a source of current car-loan rates.
| Loan detail | Why it belongs in the comparison |
|---|---|
| Principal or loan amount | Offers with different amounts borrowed are not directly comparable. |
| Term | A longer or shorter repayment period changes the payment schedule and can change total repayment. |
| APR or comparable total-cost measure | Use the lender’s stated measure to assess borrowing cost, and check what fees it includes. |
| Interest-rate structure | Record the type of rate and the terms that explain how it applies. Do not assume two headline rates have identical conditions. |
| EMI | Useful for budgeting the periodic payment, but insufficient on its own to rank offers. |
| Processing and other fees | List each fee and when it is payable. Ask whether any charge sits outside the quoted APR or comparable measure. |
| Prepayment terms | Check the lender’s written conditions and any applicable charge before assuming you can repay early on a particular basis. |
Use a consistent loan comparison
- Set the borrowing amount. Choose the down payment and expected principal, and ask lenders to quote against the same figures.
- Set the term. Request the same repayment duration from each lender so that EMI and total repayment can be compared meaningfully.
- Collect written terms. Record APR or the lender’s comparable total-cost measure, rate structure, EMI, every fee and prepayment condition. Ask for the official key fact sheet or offer documents where applicable.
- Calculate the period total. Add the scheduled repayments and fees that are not already included in the figure you are using. Keep the calculation’s included and excluded items explicit.
- Check the contract before accepting. Use the written offer and loan documents to confirm the amount, term, rate, fees and conditions that will actually apply.
Do not add fees twice. If the lender’s stated total-cost measure includes a particular charge, note that before adding it to a separate calculation. If it does not include a fee, show it separately. When a lender does not explain the scope of its measure, ask for a fee breakdown rather than assuming the offers are comparable.

Separate monthly affordability from cumulative cost
A lower EMI can reflect a different loan amount or duration rather than a cheaper offer. For the monthly budget, compare the EMI at the same principal and term. For the cumulative cost, compare the total scheduled payments plus relevant fees over the agreed period. Present both figures, with their assumptions, rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
RBI consumer material also recommends asking about the loan amount, term, down payment, loan type and fees. Its FAQ discusses home loans, so those points are useful as general comparison questions, not car-loan-specific rules. Check the car lender’s own current offer and contract for the applicable terms.
Compare insurance on equivalent cover
A lower premium only establishes that one quoted policy costs less; it does not establish that the cover is equivalent. Ask for insurance quotes based on the same car and registration details, then compare the policy wording and the features that affect protection and claims.

- Cover and exclusions: read what the policy covers and what it excludes. A government-hosted consumer guide’s indexed material notes that comprehensive cover has exclusions, but the policy document is the source to rely on for a particular offer.
- Add-ons: list which add-ons are included, excluded or priced separately. Do not treat policies with different add-ons as equivalent without accounting for that difference.
- Deductibles: compare the amount or conditions that remain the policyholder’s responsibility, as stated in the policy documents.
- Claim conditions: review the applicable requirements and conditions, not just the premium.
- Renewal: understand what the quoted premium covers and what costs may recur. Do not assume a first quote establishes future renewal cost.
Premium can depend on factors including the vehicle’s make and value, registration state and manufacture year. Those inputs help explain why two quotes may differ, but they do not tell you whether the cover is comparable. Confirm specific coverage, exclusions and add-on terms in the insurer’s current policy wording and offer documents.
Make the insurance comparison fair
- Give insurers the same vehicle and registration details.
- Ask for the same cover configuration and the same add-ons wherever available.
- Record each premium alongside the cover, exclusions, deductibles and claim conditions it applies to.
- Read the current policy wording before deciding that a lower premium is a better-value offer.
- Keep any material differences visible in your comparison instead of reducing the decision to a single premium number.
If a policy document and a summary or sales explanation appear to differ, ask the insurer to clarify the written terms that govern the policy. A general consumer guide is not a substitute for the actual contract.

| Amount due to take delivery | The dealer’s itemized final quote, showing vehicle price, local statutory charges, insurance and optional items separately, plus the amount due under the proposed payment arrangement. | What must be paid now, and which parts of the quote are required, optional or open to verification? |
| Cost over the financing period | The loan principal, term, EMI schedule, APR or comparable total-cost measure, fees and prepayment terms; identify any items already counted elsewhere. | What will the borrowing arrangement cost over its stated period, under the written terms? |
| Insurance comparison | Premium beside cover, add-ons, deductibles, exclusions and claim conditions. | Are the prices being compared for equivalent cover? |
A simple working sheet can use one row per offer and columns for the fixed inputs, quote lines, loan terms and insurance terms. Record the date of each written quote so you do not mistake one offer’s terms for another’s. If an item is not explained, mark it as needing confirmation rather than treating it as included, mandatory or free.
A practical end-to-end workflow
- Choose the exact car and registration location. Fix the make, model, variant and intended city or state before comparing.
- Set the finance assumptions. Decide the down payment, expected loan amount and term to request from each lender.
- Get itemized dealer quotes. Request written final quotations and separate vehicle price, statutory charges, insurance and optional or dealer-added items.
- Check local statutory amounts. Verify road tax, registration and any applicable hypothecation charge with the transport authority for the intended registration location.
- Collect comparable lender offers. Use matching principal and term. Record APR or a comparable total-cost measure, rate structure, EMI, fees and prepayment terms, and review the offer documents.
- Collect equivalent insurance quotes. Align the vehicle details and cover, then compare premium alongside policy wording, exclusions, add-ons, deductibles and claim conditions.
- Review both totals. Show the amount due at purchase separately from the loan-period total. Check for differences and double-counting before deciding which offer is cheaper for your needs.
Common comparison errors
- Using the ex-showroom figure as the final price: request the itemized amount for the intended registration location.
- Applying one state’s charges elsewhere: confirm local taxes and fees with the authority responsible for the actual registration.
- Choosing by EMI: align principal and term, then compare total cost and fees as well as the periodic payment.
- Choosing insurance by premium alone: check whether the cover, add-ons, deductibles, exclusions and claim terms match.
- Comparing unlike offers: make the vehicle, location, financing assumptions and cover equivalent, or clearly label the differences.
- Using stale lender examples as current offers: a Consumer VOICE car-loan guide dated February 2015 contains historical lender and rate examples. They should not be treated as current prices, rankings or product advice.
- Assuming an unexplained line is mandatory: ask the dealer or lender what it covers, then verify statutory charges with the relevant authority where applicable.
What the available figures do—and do not—tell you
There is no broadly applicable current figure here for the typical Indian on-road addition, savings from comparing car loans or savings from comparing insurance. A percentage from one vehicle or location would not establish a national benchmark. Compare the written offers for your own car and registration location rather than relying on a generalized uplift or savings claim.
Likewise, the 2015 RBI notification is relevant to the role of APR in comparing credit costs, not to present-day car-loan rates. Historical consumer guidance can explain process concepts, but current lender terms, local government charges and insurer policy wording must come from the relevant current documents.
