Clean a motorcycle helmet with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and mild neutral soap only where the helmet’s manual allows. Soften dried insects and road grime before wiping; clean the visor separately; wash only padding the manufacturer identifies as removable and washable; and keep solvents and direct heat away from the EPS impact liner. Because finishes, visor coatings and padding differ, the manual for your exact make and model takes priority over general advice.
Before you start: identify the surfaces and check the manual
A helmet combines materials that do not necessarily tolerate the same cleaner or cleaning method. The painted shell, matte finish, decals, visor coating, comfort padding and EPS impact liner have different care needs. A product that is acceptable for one part may harm another. Read the manual for your exact helmet before cleaning, and check which components are designed to come off and what the manufacturer permits for each surface.

Remove only components the manual identifies as removable. Do not treat fixed padding as though it were a washable liner, and do not assume a visor can be detached or cleaned with the shell’s cleaner. SHOEI directs owners to the supplied product manual for further care details; BMW’s System 7 Evo manual gives separate directions for its shell, visor and head pad. Those examples illustrate why model-specific instructions matter, not a universal method for every helmet.

Before choosing a cleaner, identify the exact surface you are treating. A painted shell, matte shell and visor may look like parts of one object, but their finishes or coatings can have different restrictions. Check whether the visor is tinted or has a treatment, and whether the shell has decals or specialty coatings. If the manual gives a separate product or method for one component, do not substitute the method listed for another.

- Gather a clean, soft cloth and lukewarm or warm water. Use mild neutral soap only on surfaces for which the manual allows it.
- Check whether the helmet has a matte finish, decals, specialty coating or treated visor, and follow the relevant care instructions.
- Set aside any approved removable liner pieces for separate cleaning. Leave fixed padding and the EPS impact liner in place unless the manual says otherwise.
- Do not reach for household cleaners, polish, wax, deodorizer or a generic helmet spray unless the manufacturer permits that product on the specific surface.
A clean soft microfiber cloth is a useful generic item because manufacturer instructions commonly call for a soft cloth. It is not a license to use any cleaner with it: first check whether the manual allows water, neutral soap or a named product on that surface. Use a clean cloth so grit picked up from another part of the helmet is not dragged across the visor or finish.
How to clean the helmet step by step
- Inspect the helmet. Look for impact damage, separated or deteriorated padding, damage to the retention parts, a damaged impact liner, or a visor scratch that affects your view. Cleaning is not a remedy for these problems. If you find them, use the replacement or service guidance later in this guide instead of treating the helmet as a routine-cleaning job.
- Soften stuck-on insects and grime. Lay a wet cloth or well-moistened towel over dried deposits and give them time to soften. BMW and SHOEI recommend this approach for stubborn insect residue. Once it loosens, wipe gently. Do not scrape with a fingernail or tool, or rub hard: that can scratch a visor or damage a finish.
- Wipe the shell gently. Use a clean, soft cloth and the cleaner allowed by the manual. SHOEI Europe recommends lukewarm water with a little neutral soap and a clean soft cloth; BMW’s System 7 Evo manual recommends a mild soap solution or its helmet cleaner for that model’s shell. These are model-specific directions. Take particular care with matte finishes, decals and specialty coatings rather than assuming a polish or cleaner is compatible.
- Clean the visor as a separate surface. Use a clean soft cloth and only the cleaner the helmet maker permits for that visor. Keep softened debris from being scraped across it. In the BMW System 7 Evo manual, fuel, solvents, window or glass cleaners, and alcohol-containing products are prohibited on the visor. SHOEI Europe warns against hot water, salt water, petrol, glass cleaner and other solvents on helmet components. Follow your own manual; do not transfer one model’s approved product or restriction to another without checking.
- Clean the interior according to its construction. Remove comfort-liner parts only if the manual says they are removable. SHOEI USA says removable comfort-liner parts may be hand-washed or machine-washed at 30°C/86°F in a washing bag with neutral detergent. BMW specifies hand-washing the System 7 Evo head pad at no more than 30°C. These instructions are not permission to machine-wash every helmet liner. For fixed padding, wipe rather than removing or soaking it as though it were a removable washable part.
- Protect the EPS impact liner. SHOEI says EPS is neither solvent- nor heat-proof and advises careful wiping with a damp cloth to avoid scratches or indentations. SHOEI Worldwide also warns that the EPS liner is vulnerable to solvent or heat. Do not use a solvent or direct heat on it, and do not scrub it. If it appears damaged, separated or affected by an unsuitable chemical, stop and consult the manufacturer’s replacement guidance.
- Let everything dry fully. Allow washed parts to dry completely before reinstalling them. Do not speed-dry them with a hair dryer or tumble dryer: SHOEI says not to use either. BMW says to let the System 7 Evo head pad dry slowly in the air. DMD and Airoh advise room-temperature or ventilated drying away from heating appliances and direct heat. Use the instructions for your model, and do not put damp padding back into the helmet.
- Store it dry and protected. After airing the helmet dry, keep it in a dry place. DMD recommends using the original helmet bag where possible. Check the manual for any additional model-specific storage instructions.
For a shell or visor, the basic sequence is to soften grime first, then wipe rather than attack it with force. If a deposit does not come away easily, give the damp cloth more time instead of escalating to a scraper, abrasive pad or stronger chemical. This is especially important on the visor, where scratches can affect vision and SHOEI Worldwide advises replacing a visor scratched enough to impair sight.
When a liner is removable, take care not to confuse removal with permission to wash it by any method. Confirm how the parts detach and whether the instructions permit hand-washing, machine-washing, or only another specified method. SHOEI USA’s machine-wash option is limited to removable comfort-liner parts, a washing bag, neutral detergent and 30°C/86°F. BMW’s System 7 Evo instruction is hand-washing at no more than 30°C. The difference is a reason to follow the precise helmet manual, not to choose whichever method seems easier.

The table summarizes examples from named manufacturers. It is not a substitute for the instructions for your helmet: do not apply a model-specific method to another helmet unless its manual agrees.
| Surface or issue | Manufacturer guidance in the cited example | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | SHOEI Europe recommends lukewarm water, a little neutral soap and a clean soft cloth. BMW’s System 7 Evo manual recommends a mild soap solution or BMW helmet cleaner for that shell. | Use a gentle method permitted by your manual; verify compatibility with the particular finish, decals or coating. |
| Visor | BMW’s System 7 Evo manual warns against fuel, solvents, window or glass cleaner, and alcohol-containing products. SHOEI Europe warns against hot water, salt water, petrol, glass cleaner and other solvents on helmet components. | Clean the visor separately and follow its specific instructions. Do not infer that a shell cleaner is safe for the visor. |
| Removable comfort padding | SHOEI USA permits hand- or machine-washing removable comfort-liner parts at 30°C/86°F in a washing bag with neutral detergent. BMW specifies hand-washing the System 7 Evo head pad at no more than 30°C. | Wash only parts the manual identifies as washable, and use the method and temperature stated for that model. |
| EPS impact liner | SHOEI advises careful wiping with a damp cloth and warns that EPS is vulnerable to solvent and heat. | Avoid solvents, heat and forceful scrubbing; treat damage as a safety issue, not a cleaning challenge. |
| Drying | SHOEI prohibits a hair dryer or tumble dryer. BMW advises slow air-drying for the System 7 Evo head pad. DMD and Airoh advise room-temperature or ventilated drying away from heating appliances and direct heat. | Air-dry completely away from direct heat. Do not use a faster method unless your exact manual expressly allows it. |
The most important comparison is not which brand’s method is best, but which part it applies to. A neutral soap recommendation for one shell does not automatically cover its visor or interior. A machine-wash instruction for a removable comfort liner does not apply to fixed padding or the EPS impact liner. Likewise, a named helmet cleaner permitted for one manufacturer’s shell is not proof that a similar spray is suitable for another helmet’s coating.

Temperature and drying instructions matter as much as the detergent. The cited examples include a 30°C/86°F limit for SHOEI USA’s removable comfort-liner parts and a hand-wash limit of 30°C for BMW’s System 7 Evo head pad. The examples also consistently caution against direct heat for drying. If the manual for your helmet gives a different limit or method, use that rather than combining directions from different brands.
Cleaners and methods to avoid as defaults
Avoid petrol, solvents, glass cleaner and aggressive household cleaning products unless your helmet’s manual explicitly permits a particular product on a particular surface. A cleaner can harm plastic parts or visor coatings, and solvents or heat can damage EPS. SHOEI Worldwide warns that petroleum agents and acid- or alkali-based cleaners can damage plastic parts. BMW’s System 7 Evo manual makes a specific distinction between its shell and visor directions, including a restriction on alcohol-containing products for the visor.
Do not assume a spray, polish, wax or deodorizer advertised for helmets is safe for every shell finish, coating or liner. BMW’s manual permits BMW helmet cleaner for its shell and visor cleaner for its visor, while SHOEI’s advice specifies neutral soap for some surfaces and warns against solvents. The name or intended use of a product is not enough to establish compatibility. The precise manual controls.
There is also no single “helmet cleaner” rule that resolves every surface. The supported gentle baseline is a soft cloth, water and mild neutral soap where the manufacturer allows it. Some manufacturer instructions identify a model-specific approved cleaner for a particular surface. If you cannot confirm that a product is allowed for the shell, visor or liner in question, do not use it by assumption; consult the exact manual or manufacturer.
- Do not scrape dried bugs. Soften them with a wet cloth first, especially on the visor.
- Do not use hot water or direct heat as a shortcut. Manufacturer instructions include specific limits and EPS is heat-sensitive.
- Do not machine-wash by default. SHOEI USA’s machine-washing direction applies to removable comfort-liner parts, with a washing bag and a 30°C/86°F limit. Other helmets may specify hand-washing or different care.
- Do not soak fixed padding or remove parts that are not intended to come off. Follow the model’s construction and care directions.
- Do not assume a cleaner approved for the shell is approved for the visor. Check the instructions for each surface, especially where the visor has a coating.
- Do not use a hair dryer, tumble dryer, radiator or other direct heat source to hurry drying. SHOEI, BMW, DMD and Airoh guidance supports slow or room-temperature air drying for the examples cited.
How often should you clean a helmet?
There is no universal cleaning schedule established across the manufacturer guidance. SHOEI Europe says: “We recommend cleaning the outer shell of the helmet and the visor regularly, ideally after every ride.” That is SHOEI’s recommendation, not a cross-brand requirement. For your helmet, use its manual and clean more promptly when grime or insect residue is present, using the gentle method appropriate to the affected surface.

Cleaning after a ride can be practical when there is visible residue, because dried insects and grime are easier to address after they have softened than by scraping them later. But the cited guidance does not establish a required schedule for all manufacturers or all helmets. If your helmet’s manual gives a schedule or a specific product, follow it. Otherwise, let the condition of the surface and the manufacturer’s instructions guide the cleaning rather than treating SHOEI’s after-every-ride recommendation as a universal rule.
When cleaning is not enough: damage and replacement
Cleaning cannot restore impact protection after a crash. SHOEI Europe says to replace a helmet after a fall or accident even if there are few external marks or none visible. SHOEI USA lists impact, loose or deteriorated comfort padding or retention parts, and EPS separation, wear, breakup, heat exposure or solvent damage as reasons for replacement. If the helmet has experienced an impact or shows one of these conditions, do not try to clean away the evidence or assume that an intact-looking shell proves it is safe.
SHOEI Europe recommends replacing a helmet after about five years of normal use, care and storage. This is SHOEI’s manufacturer guidance, not a universal replacement interval or legal requirement. Follow the recommendations for your own make and model.
For a visor scratched enough to affect vision, SHOEI Worldwide advises replacing it. If another component is damaged or does not work correctly, ask the manufacturer or distributor about repair or replacement options for the exact model. Replacement parts must be compatible with that helmet; confirm the model fit and current availability rather than choosing by appearance alone.
These are different situations and call for different responses. A dirty visor may need gentle cleaning; a visor scratch that interferes with sight calls for replacement guidance. Ordinary road grime can be cleaned, but impact damage, a separated or damaged EPS liner, damaged retention parts, or deteriorated padding should not be treated as cosmetic issues. If you are uncertain whether a problem is damage or removable dirt, stop and consult the manufacturer or distributor rather than using more force or a stronger cleaner.

Replacement decisions can also be component-specific. SHOEI says replacement components may be available through its distributor, but availability and compatibility depend on the exact model. Confirm the model before ordering a visor or padding. No universal price or cost is established by the cited manufacturer care guidance, so check with the manufacturer or distributor for current availability and pricing rather than assuming parts are interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions
How and with what should a SHOEI helmet be cleaned?
SHOEI Europe recommends lukewarm water with a little neutral soap and a clean soft cloth for the outer shell, and says to soften stubborn insect residue with a wet cloth before wiping. Clean the visor according to its own instructions and avoid the hot water, salt water, petrol, glass cleaner and other solvents SHOEI warns against. For the exact model and its removable liner parts, follow the supplied product manual.
Can I use glass cleaner or alcohol on a motorcycle helmet visor?
Do not use either by default. BMW’s System 7 Evo manual warns against window or glass cleaner and alcohol-containing products on its visor; SHOEI Europe also warns against glass cleaner and other solvents on helmet components. Check the instructions for your exact visor and use only a cleaner the manufacturer permits.
Can I machine-wash motorcycle helmet padding?
Only if the manual for your exact helmet permits it and identifies the parts as removable and washable. SHOEI USA allows machine-washing its removable comfort-liner parts at 30°C/86°F in a washing bag with neutral detergent. BMW specifies hand-washing the System 7 Evo head pad at no more than 30°C, so machine-washing is not a universal rule.

How often should I clean my motorcycle helmet?
There is no universal schedule established across the manufacturer guidance. SHOEI Europe recommends cleaning the shell and visor regularly, ideally after every ride, but that is SHOEI’s recommendation rather than a requirement for every brand. Check your manual and clean residue using the method allowed for each surface.
When should a motorcycle helmet be replaced?
Cleaning cannot restore impact protection. SHOEI Europe advises replacement after a fall or accident, even if external marks are slight or absent. SHOEI USA also lists impact, loose or deteriorated comfort padding or retention parts, and EPS separation, wear, breakup, heat exposure or solvent damage as replacement reasons. SHOEI Europe recommends replacement after about five years of normal use, care and storage; that is manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule. Consult your own manufacturer for model-specific advice.
Should I replace a scratched visor?
SHOEI Worldwide advises replacing a visor if it is scratched enough to affect vision. Ask the manufacturer or distributor about a model-compatible replacement and confirm current availability.
