There is no single best Kohler engine air filter for every engine. Choose a replacement by matching it to the engine’s exact model and specification, then confirming the air-cleaner type and required elements in the applicable Kohler manual or parts information. The reviewed manuals do not establish a universal part number or comparative performance ranking.
How to identify the right Kohler air filter
Before ordering, find the engine model and specification, then identify whether its air cleaner is low-profile or heavy-duty. Some configurations also use a precleaner or a separate inner element. Match the replacement to all of these details rather than relying on the words “Kohler air filter” alone.
- Find the engine model and specification. Use those identifiers to locate the applicable Kohler manual or parts information.
- Identify the air-cleaner configuration. Check whether it is low-profile or heavy-duty and whether it includes a precleaner or inner element.
- Confirm the replacement parts and service schedule. Use the manual for that engine and configuration. Kohler’s manuals direct owners to authorized dealers for genuine service parts; see the 14 690 01 Rev. G service manual.
A generic listing or a filter that looks similar is not enough to establish fit. No universal replacement part number or filter-quality comparison is established by the cited manuals.
How often to service or replace the filter
Intervals depend on the engine family and air-cleaner configuration. These examples come from different Kohler service manuals, so apply only the schedule in the manual that covers your engine. Both manuals say indicated procedures should be performed more often in severe, dusty, or dirty conditions.

The publication year for the cited revision 24 690 02 Rev. O is not established here. Its hour values describe that manual’s schedule, not a universal Kohler interval.
Can you clean and reuse a Kohler air filter?
It depends on the element. Kohler’s RH255/RH265 owner’s manual says to remove and replace the paper element and states: “Paper element cannot be blown out with compressed air.” For the foam element in the configuration covered by that manual, Kohler permits washing it in warm water with detergent, rinsing it, and letting it air-dry. Do not apply that foam-cleaning instruction to a different filter design unless its own manual allows it.

What to inspect in a heavy-duty air cleaner
Kohler’s 62 690 05 Rev. H service manual identifies these parts in the heavy-duty assembly:
- Housing and retaining clip
- Paper element and inner element
- End cap and dust ejector valve
- Inlet screen and plug or filter minder
Inspect the assembly, replace the element, and check the inner element, replacing it when dirty. Replace bent or damaged components. Kohler warns that loose or damaged air-cleaner components can cause premature wear and failure. The manual’s component and service instructions apply to its heavy-duty assembly, not every Kohler cleaner.

Safety before servicing
Follow the safety procedure in the manual for your engine before opening or removing the air cleaner. The cited service manuals warn of accidental starting and instruct users to disconnect and ground the spark-plug lead or leads; they also give battery-disconnection instructions where applicable. These excerpts do not replace the complete model-specific procedure. If you cannot identify the correct steps, consult the applicable manual or a qualified service provider.

The cited manuals provide maintenance guidance, but no independent airflow or filtration-efficiency comparisons, performance tests, or evidence that one replacement improves power or fuel economy. If choosing a genuine Kohler part, the 14 690 01 Rev. G manual says genuine service parts can be purchased from authorized dealers.
