Choose winter tires for an AWD SUV by matching the tire to your winter conditions, confirming the exact vehicle-approved size and specifications, and fitting a matched set of four. AWD can help an SUV accelerate on snow, but it does not improve tire grip while braking or cornering. For regular snow, ice, or freezing conditions, a dedicated winter tire is the clearest specialist choice; a 3PMSF-marked all-weather tire may suit drivers who need one set year-round. Neither the AWD badge nor a snow marking replaces correct fitment and maintenance.
What AWD does—and does not—do for winter driving
All-wheel drive can help send power to the wheels that have traction, which can make it easier to get moving on a slippery surface. It cannot create grip where the tires have little traction. Michelin’s winter-tire guidance says AWD and 4WD help with acceleration but do not improve braking or cornering on snow and ice. Those tasks still depend on the contact between the tires and the road.

That distinction matters when choosing tires. An SUV may pull away confidently and still need more distance to stop or be unable to turn as expected on a slick road. A winter tire is intended to provide cold-weather traction; AWD is not a substitute for one. Michelin recommends winter tires on all four wheels, including on AWD vehicles, to maintain balanced traction and control.

Choose a tire type for your actual winter conditions
Start with the roads you regularly drive, not a generic idea of what an SUV needs. Consider whether you encounter persistent cold, deep or packed snow, ice, slush, or only occasional winter weather. Also consider whether you can change tires seasonally and whether local rules govern winter tires or studs.
Dedicated winter tires
If you regularly drive in snow, ice, or freezing conditions, a dedicated winter tire is the most direct specialist option in the guidance available here. These tires are designed for cold-weather traction. Look for the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, commonly abbreviated 3PMSF, when selecting a tire for severe-snow use.
NHTSA states that winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. That is a general distinction between tire types, not a ranking of particular models or a promise that a winter tire will prevent skidding. Road surface, vehicle, tire condition, speed, and driving choices still matter.

All-weather tires with 3PMSF
A year-round all-weather tire bearing 3PMSF may be worth considering if you want one set rather than seasonal changes and need a tire marked for severe-snow traction. It is a different choice from a dedicated winter set: weigh convenience against the need for specialized cold-weather performance in the conditions you regularly face. The marking alone does not show that an all-weather tire performs identically to a dedicated winter tire in every winter condition.

How to read 3PMSF and M+S
The 3PMSF symbol indicates that a tire meets an industry standard for severe-snow traction, according to Michelin’s Winter Tire Buying Guide. M+S, meaning mud and snow, is common on all-season tires, but Michelin distinguishes it from the severe-snow traction standard represented by 3PMSF. Do not treat M+S as interchangeable with 3PMSF when you are choosing for severe snow.
A snow marking is a useful screening criterion, not a complete performance comparison. It does not establish that two marked tires have equal traction, or that a tire will perform the same in deep snow, on ice, and in slush. Michelin describes an Ice Grip designation, when available, as an additional indicator for ice performance. Consider it alongside—not instead of—fitment, tire type, and your road conditions.
Studded or studless
Studded and studless are two winter-tire approaches to consider, but the material available here does not establish a universal winner for every surface or location. Stud rules vary by jurisdiction, so check local law before buying or using studded tires. If you are choosing between them for a particular route, ask a qualified tire professional to explain which option is appropriate for your conditions and whether it is permitted where you drive.
| Option or marking | What it tells you | How to use it in your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated winter tire | Designed for cold-weather traction | A specialist option for regular snow, ice, or freezing conditions |
| All-weather tire with 3PMSF | Meets an industry standard for severe-snow traction | Consider if you need one set year-round, while recognizing it is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated winter tire in every condition |
| M+S marking | Common on all-season tires; not the same severe-snow traction standard as 3PMSF | Do not use it as a substitute for the 3PMSF marking when seeking the severe-snow designation |
| Ice Grip designation | Additional ice-performance indicator when available | Use as another selection clue, not as a complete model-to-model comparison |
| Studded or studless construction | A choice of winter-tire construction | Check local stud rules and seek advice for the roads you drive |
Confirm the exact fitment before shopping
Do not choose a size from a generic SUV guide or from another vehicle that looks similar. The correct fit depends on your SUV’s year, make, model, and wheel setup. NHTSA directs owners to the tire placard on the driver’s door or the owner’s manual. Replacements should be the original size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

- Read the driver-door tire placard. Record the tire size and the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure. The placard is a starting point tied to your vehicle, unlike a size suggested for a different SUV.
- Check the owner’s manual. Look for tire and wheel guidance, including any manufacturer-approved alternate size for winter use. If the manual and placard leave a question about an alternate setup, ask the automaker or a qualified tire professional before ordering.
- Match the factory requirements. Confirm that the replacement tire’s load capacity and speed rating meet the SUV’s requirements. Do not assume that a tire with the right nominal size is suitable if its other specifications do not match the vehicle guidance.
- Verify wheels and clearance. If you are using a separate winter wheel set or a different approved size, confirm wheel compatibility and clearance for your exact SUV. Michelin notes that winter tires can be mounted on existing wheels if the size matches; a second wheel set is optional and may make seasonal changes easier.
- Have uncertain fitment checked before purchase. NHTSA advises consulting a tire dealer when unsure. Provide the vehicle year, make, model, current wheel setup, and the proposed tire specifications so the fitment can be checked against the maker’s guidance.
The evidence here does not identify a universally suitable size for AWD SUVs. A winter tire used on an Audi Q5 in a manufacturer-presented example is not evidence that the same size or tire fits another Q5 or any other SUV. Use the specifications for your own vehicle.
Why an AWD SUV needs four matched winter tires
Fit all four wheels with winter tires rather than putting them only on the front or rear axle. Michelin recommends winter tires on all four wheels, including for AWD and 4WD vehicles. Mixing tire types can create a traction imbalance and unpredictable handling because the axles may respond differently on a slippery road.
For an AWD system, matching also concerns tire circumference. Michelin says AWD and 4WD systems typically require the same circumference at all four positions; even small differences may stress drivetrain components. Use the vehicle maker’s specifications and tolerances rather than relying on a general rule about how much tread difference is acceptable. No single allowable tread-depth difference applies to every SUV in the guidance cited here.

If you are replacing fewer than four tires, or mixing an existing tire with a new winter set, consult the vehicle maker or a qualified tire professional before proceeding. A tire that physically fits is not necessarily an appropriate match for the AWD system.

Buy and install with a fitment check
Use the following sequence to keep the purchase tied to your vehicle rather than to a broad product category:
- Decide the tire type. Choose a dedicated winter tire if regular severe winter conditions call for a specialist set; consider a 3PMSF all-weather tire if year-round use is a priority. Use your local winter conditions and legal requirements in that decision.
- Write down the complete vehicle requirements. Gather the placard size and cold-pressure recommendation, manual guidance, and required load and speed specifications. Include any manufacturer-approved alternate winter size, if one is listed.
- Compare complete specifications, not just the symbol. Check the 3PMSF marking if severe-snow traction is a requirement, and consider the Ice Grip designation for ice performance if available. Still compare the tire’s type and fitment; a marking is not a head-to-head performance ranking.
- Confirm a matched set of four. Make sure the tires meet the vehicle maker’s matching requirements and are compatible with the AWD system. If considering a mixed set or only two replacements, pause and get vehicle-specific advice.
- Confirm the mounting plan. Existing wheels can be used if the tire size matches, according to Michelin. If using another wheel set, have compatibility and clearance confirmed for the exact SUV.
- Check local rules. Verify any restrictions or requirements that apply to winter tires or studs in the places where you will drive.
- Ask the installer to verify the vehicle application. Have the tire and wheel specifications checked against the SUV’s placard, manual, and manufacturer requirements before mounting.
Manufacturer product pages can illustrate how a particular tire was tested, but they do not establish fitment for another vehicle. For example, Michelin’s X-Ice Snow+ page reports testing in size 235/55R19 on an Audi Q5 and recommends four dedicated winter tires for severe winter conditions. That configuration-specific example is not a fitment recommendation for every Audi Q5 or other AWD SUV, nor does it establish a universal best tire. Confirm the exact product, size, load and speed rating, and fitment for your vehicle.

Correct tires still need to be in suitable condition and inflated as the vehicle maker recommends. NHTSA’s general tire-safety guidance says tires are unsafe at 2/32 inch of remaining tread and advises regular checks for damage and uneven wear. That is a general safety minimum, not a special winter-performance threshold: winter traction on snow and ice may diminish before a tire reaches 2/32 inch.
Check pressure when the tires are cold
Use the cold pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, found on the placard or in the owner’s manual. NHTSA advises checking pressure when tires are cold. Do not inflate to the maximum pressure molded on the tire as a substitute for the vehicle’s recommendation; the tire’s molded maximum is not the target pressure specified for your SUV.

Inspect tread and tire condition
- Check tread depth and look for uneven wear across the set.
- Inspect for damage and have a tire professional assess anything that concerns you.
- Do not interpret the 2/32-inch general minimum as proof that a tire retains strong winter traction right up to that point.
- Keep AWD matching requirements in mind if wear or damage means a tire needs replacement; ask the vehicle maker or a qualified tire professional how to maintain the required set match.
These steps follow NHTSA’s TireWise safety guidance. The specific replacement and matching decisions for an AWD system remain subject to the vehicle maker’s specifications.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Assuming AWD makes winter tires unnecessary. AWD assists acceleration, not braking or cornering on snow and ice.
- Buying only two winter tires. Michelin recommends winter tires on all four wheels for balanced traction and control, including on AWD vehicles.
- Treating M+S and 3PMSF as equivalent. M+S is common on all-season tires; it is not the same severe-snow traction standard.
- Shopping by tire size alone. The size must be appropriate, but load capacity, speed rating, matching, and vehicle approval also matter.
- Assuming every 3PMSF tire performs alike. The symbol indicates a severe-snow standard; it is not a guarantee of identical performance across tire models or road conditions.
- Ignoring AWD circumference requirements. Small differences can stress drivetrain components, so follow the SUV maker’s actual specifications and tolerances.
- Using the tire’s maximum molded pressure. Set pressure to the vehicle maker’s cold recommendation instead.
- Waiting until the general tread minimum to consider winter capability. The 2/32-inch figure is a general safety minimum, not a winter-performance threshold.
