Start with the pressure range printed on your exact tire and the compatible rim maker’s limits, then choose a starting pressure for your tire size, riding load, tube or tubeless setup, and route. Measure with a gauge and make small, setup-specific adjustments without exceeding either component’s limits.
What PSI should my e-bike tires be?
Use the pressure range marked on the tire as the first boundary, not a universal gravel-bike chart or another rider’s setup. Then check the wheel or rim maker’s compatibility and pressure instructions. The usable setup must respect both the tire and rim guidance; if either maker’s instructions are unclear or appear to conflict, check with the manufacturers or a qualified bicycle shop rather than guessing.

Schwalbe’s bicycle tire pressure FAQ puts the issue plainly: “It is not possible to give a general air pressure recommendation for a specific bike or tire.” The right value depends on the individual tire and wheel, the load they carry, and the conditions in which they are ridden. E-bike use does not remove those dependencies, and the evidence does not establish one pressure that is right for all e-bikes on gravel and dirt.
Think of pressure as a setup choice within equipment limits. The goal is not simply to inflate as much as possible for speed or as little as possible for comfort. It is to find a pressure that supports the actual load and works for the surface while balancing rolling efficiency, grip, comfort, wear, and the risk of punctures or impacts.

That means the answer to “What PSI should my e-bike tires be?” starts with your particular tire and wheel rather than a number from a friend or an online chart. A pressure that works for a wider tire on one bike may not suit a narrower tire, a different rim, or the same bike loaded with luggage. Use a calculator or manufacturer guide to establish a starting point, not a shortcut around checking your equipment.
Which factors should determine your starting point?
Tire size and volume
Narrower tires generally need more pressure than wider tires. A wider tire can generally be run at lower pressure, but width alone does not identify a safe or suitable number: construction, rim compatibility, load, and the tire’s own marked limits still matter. Find the complete size printed on the sidewall rather than relying only on a model name.
Size matters even within a single tire model. Schwalbe’s 2025 catalog lists different maximum pressures for three G-One Overland sizes: 40-622 has a listed maximum of 4.5 bar/65 psi, 45-622 has 4.0 bar/55 psi, and 50-622 has 3.5 bar/50 psi. These are maximums for those specific catalog entries, not suggested gravel pressures. The example is a reminder to identify the full size and read the markings on your own tire.
Rider, luggage, and front-to-rear load
Pressure needs change with the load on each tire. Include the rider and anything carried on the bike, such as bags or other luggage. Also consider how that load is distributed between the front and rear wheels: the two tires may not carry the same share, so do not assume that one identical pressure is automatically appropriate at both ends.
Greater load generally calls for more pressure, but that direction is not a substitute for the tire and rim instructions. A pressure suitable for a lightly loaded ride may not suit the same bike carrying luggage. Reassess the setup when the load changes rather than treating a previous setting as permanent. If a calculator asks for rider or system weight, provide the most accurate relevant information it requests and account for the luggage you expect to carry.
Tube or tubeless setup
Identify whether the tire is being used with an inner tube or as a tubeless setup. Schwalbe says tubeless tires can generally be ridden at slightly lower pressure, but that does not create a universal tubeless setting or permission to exceed equipment limits. The appropriate pressure still depends on the exact tire and rim.
Think of tubeless as one input when selecting pressure, not as an independent safety guarantee. The tire and rim must still be compatible, and their instructions still set the applicable boundaries. If you are comparing a tubed ride with a tubeless ride, keep the rest of the setup and conditions as similar as practical so you can judge the effect of a pressure change rather than several changes at once.

Surface and ride priorities
Gravel and dirt describe a wide range of conditions. Surface roughness matters because pressure is a trade-off: higher pressure can reduce rolling resistance, wear, and puncture susceptibility, while lower pressure can improve comfort and grip. Persistent underinflation can accelerate wear. Decide which characteristics matter most for the route, then adjust only within the approved limits.
A smoother gravel route and rougher dirt route may put different priorities on comfort and grip, but neither label dictates a particular PSI. SRAM/Zipp’s calculator takes ride type, surface, conditions, weight, and tire-and-wheel setup into account; use the closest accurate descriptions of your actual ride. If your route changes, revisit the setup rather than assuming the pressure that felt good on one surface will automatically suit another.
How to find a safe starting pressure
- Read the tire sidewall. Record the exact size and the printed minimum and maximum pressure. Those values define the tire’s permitted range; they are not, by themselves, a recommendation for your particular ride. Do not use a figure from another size in the same product family as a substitute.
- Check the rim or wheel maker’s guidance. Confirm that the tire is compatible with the rim and identify any applicable pressure constraints. Do not rely on the tire marking alone when the rim maker provides additional limits. If you cannot establish compatibility or interpret a limit, ask the manufacturer or a qualified bicycle shop.
- Write down the real setup. Note the tire size, tube or tubeless configuration, and the load you expect to carry. Consider front and rear load separately if luggage or the bike’s setup puts noticeably different weight over each wheel. Include the route type and conditions you expect to encounter.
- Use a setup-specific guide or calculator. SRAM/Zipp’s tire-pressure calculator considers ride type, surface, conditions, weight, and tire and wheel setup. Enter the closest accurate details available. Treat the result as a starting point, then check it against the marked tire range and rim maker’s guidance; a calculator does not override either.
- Inflate and measure with a gauge. Use a pump with a pressure gauge or a standalone tire-pressure gauge. A thumb squeeze is not a reliable way to establish pressure: Schwalbe specifically cautions against the thumb test. A measured reading gives you a repeatable baseline for later adjustments.
- Ride and make small adjustments. If the starting point does not suit the route, change pressure gradually, staying inside both tire and rim limits. Pay attention to comfort, grip, handling, tire squirm, and signs that the tire is experiencing impacts. Recheck with the gauge after each adjustment rather than estimating by feel.
Before inflating, it helps to make a short record: tire size, rim or wheel, tube setup, expected load, route conditions, and the calculator or guide used. This makes it easier to compare like with like. If the calculator’s suggested number falls outside the range permitted by the tire or rim, do not use that number; revisit the entered details or seek guidance from the component makers.
Keep a note of the tire setup, load, surface, and pressure that worked for a particular ride. That record can make future adjustments more deliberate, especially when comparing a smooth gravel route with rougher dirt or when the bike is carrying different luggage. It remains a record for that setup and those conditions—not a universal prescription for another tire, wheel, or load.

Begin with the safe starting point from the actual tire and rim limits and a calculator or manufacturer guide that accounts for your setup. Then make one modest change at a time according to what you notice on the route. There is no evidence-based universal PSI table for “e-bikes on gravel” that can account for every tire size, construction, wheel, load, and tube or tubeless configuration.
- If comfort or grip is the priority: Lower pressure may help, particularly with a wider tire, but remain within both component makers’ limits and watch for poor handling, tire squirm, or signs of impacts.
- If the bike feels under-supported under a heavier load: Greater load generally calls for more pressure. Reconsider the load on each tire, and use the equipment limits and setup-specific guidance to choose a safe adjustment.
- If rolling efficiency is the priority: Higher pressure can reduce rolling resistance, but do not assume the highest permitted value is best for every surface or load. Comfort, grip, wear, and puncture susceptibility also enter the trade-off.
- If the ride includes rougher dirt: Surface conditions can change which trade-offs matter most. Use the actual conditions in a pressure calculator where possible, then fine-tune gradually while monitoring handling and impacts.
Make changes in small steps and measure again each time. This lets you connect a change in feel with a known pressure, rather than relying on memory or an unmeasured squeeze. If the bike handles poorly or the tire squirms, take that as a reason to reassess the setup; do not keep lowering pressure just to seek more comfort. Likewise, a firm feel is not proof that a pressure is appropriate for your tire, rim, load, or surface.
Change one variable at a time where practical. If you change pressure, load, tire, or tube configuration together, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the ride. Never use a pressure adjustment to work around a tire-rim compatibility problem or a value outside the makers’ stated limits.

What does a tire’s maximum pressure tell you?
A maximum printed for a particular tire is a component limit, not a target pressure for gravel riding. Schwalbe’s 2025 bicycle tire catalog describes the G-One Overland as a gravel tire for commuters, adventurers, and e-bikers, with a listed 50% road / 50% off-road use. Its size-specific maximums illustrate why the exact sidewall matters:
| G-One Overland size listed in Schwalbe’s 2025 catalog | Catalog maximum pressure | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 40-622 | 4.5 bar / 65 psi | Product- and size-specific maximum, not a recommended riding pressure |
| 45-622 | 4.0 bar / 55 psi | Product- and size-specific maximum, not a recommended riding pressure |
| 50-622 | 3.5 bar / 50 psi | Product- and size-specific maximum, not a recommended riding pressure |
The figures are not interchangeable even within this one tire family: the catalog lists different maxima for different sizes. Check the markings on your own tire and the instructions for your own rim. A catalog example cannot establish the safe pressure for a different model, tire construction, wheel, load, or riding condition.
The same distinction applies to any tire maximum you encounter: it defines an equipment boundary, not the pressure that will maximize grip or comfort on your route. A lower value is not automatically correct either; it still needs to support the actual load and remain within both component makers’ instructions. Use product specifications to confirm the limits for your exact equipment, and use setup-specific guidance to select a starting point inside those limits.
How often should you check pressure?
Use a gauge rather than judging firmness with your thumb. Schwalbe recommends checking tire pressure at least monthly and before each ride when using latex tubes. A pressure check is also sensible whenever the setup or load has changed, or when the bike’s handling gives you reason to question the current setting. Follow the relevant component guidance if it specifies a different check routine.
A gauge-equipped floor pump is a practical way to inflate and check pressure; a standalone gauge is another option. The useful feature is a measured reading, not a particular product. If readings vary between tools, check that the gauge is being used correctly and rely on a consistent measuring method when comparing adjustments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a useful comparison over time, use the same gauge where practical and note the reading along with the conditions. A thumb test cannot tell you whether a small change moved the pressure up or down by a repeatable amount. The gauge is especially useful when you are testing gradual changes for a particular route or load.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a PSI from another e-bike: Another rider may have a different tire width, rim, load, or tube setup, so the number may not transfer safely or comfortably.
- Treating a catalog maximum as the goal: A maximum says what a specific tire size permits; it does not identify the right pressure for a gravel or dirt route.
- Ignoring the rim maker’s constraints: Tire and rim compatibility and pressure guidance both matter. Verify both rather than relying on a single marking.
- Assuming tubeless means pressure can be lowered without limit: Tubeless use may allow a slightly lower pressure in general, but safe pressure remains dependent on the exact tire and rim.
- Using a thumb test or an unmeasured adjustment: Feel cannot establish a dependable PSI. Use a gauge and make gradual changes.
- Changing pressure without accounting for luggage: Load affects pressure needs, and front and rear tires may carry different shares. Reassess when the load changes.
- Assuming a calculator result supersedes the component instructions: A calculator can help identify a starting point, but it cannot authorize pressure beyond the tire or rim limits.
- Changing several variables at once: If you change pressure, load, tire, or tube setup together, you will have less clarity about what improved or worsened the ride.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same pressure in the front and rear tire?
Not automatically. The front and rear tires may carry different shares of the bike, rider, and luggage load. Consider each wheel’s load when selecting a starting point, and follow the tire and rim limits for both positions.

Should I run lower pressure for tubeless gravel tires?
Schwalbe says tubeless tires can generally be ridden at slightly lower pressure. That is a general direction, not a universal setting: the safe pressure still depends on the exact tire and rim, their compatibility, and the load.
Is the maximum PSI printed on my tire the recommended pressure?
No. It is the maximum for that tire, not a target for a particular route. Choose a setup-specific starting point within the tire and rim makers’ limits, accounting for tire size, load, configuration, and conditions.

Can a pressure calculator tell me exactly what to use?
A calculator provides a setup-specific starting point, not permission to ignore equipment limits. SRAM/Zipp’s calculator considers ride type, surface, conditions, weight, and tire-and-wheel setup. Check its result against the pressure range and constraints for your exact tire and rim.
A simple decision rule
For any e-bike gravel or dirt setup, first establish what the exact tire and rim allow. Next account for tire width, load distribution, tube or tubeless configuration, and the route’s surface. Use an appropriate manufacturer guide or calculator for a starting point, measure with a gauge, and adjust in small steps while monitoring handling, comfort, grip, and impacts. If you cannot verify the tire-rim compatibility or applicable pressure limits, resolve that uncertainty before riding rather than choosing a number by guesswork.
