Choose an off-road SUV for the hardest terrain you expect to drive regularly—not for a badge, one clearance figure, or a once-in-a-lifetime trail. Start with how often you will leave pavement, then compare the exact trim’s drivetrain, low-range gearing, clearance and angles, tires, traction equipment, and recovery provisions against that terrain. Finally, make sure its comfort, space, towing ability, and running needs still suit everyday driving.
How do I choose an off-road SUV for my driving needs?
Begin by describing your real trips: how much is pavement, what the roughest routine route is like, and how often you will drive it. A maintained gravel road, a rutted muddy access track, and a slow rocky climb are not interchangeable tests. A vehicle that is a sensible choice for the first may be poorly suited to the last, even if both owners call their trips “off-roading.”

Then assess each candidate as a system. An SUV’s advertised four-wheel-drive badge or ground-clearance number does not tell you whether its tires, gearing, underbody, geometry, and traction equipment fit your route. Compare the exact model year and trim sold in your market, not just the nameplate. Features and specifications vary by year, market, and equipment package, and manufacturer guidance itself warns that off-road-oriented design can affect on-road behavior.

| Maintained gravel or fire roads and light trails | A suitable AWD or 4WD system, tires appropriate to the route, adequate clearance and sound condition. Keep passenger, cargo, and everyday-use needs in the comparison. | Do not assume AWD makes every track safe, or that a crossover can handle terrain beyond its tires or design. |
| Frequent rough tracks, ruts, or soft surfaces | Check the exact drivetrain, underbody clearance and exposed components, tire construction and condition, and whether protective or recovery equipment is fitted. | Low-hanging steps, tow hitches, or other trim parts can meet obstacles before the main body does. Verify the actual vehicle. |
| Slow, steep, or technical terrain | Look for a drivetrain and gearing intended for demanding off-road use, low range where offered, and vehicle-specific traction aids such as differential locks. Assess all three angles as well as clearance. | Do not infer technical capability from an “off-road” badge, AWD label, or one specification. Learn the equipment’s limits and operation before the trail. |
Set the use case before comparing SUVs
Separate routine needs from occasional ambitions
Ask what the vehicle must manage repeatedly, including the route to a campsite, work site, or recreation area—not just the most dramatic obstacle you hope to try. How often you drive on pavement matters too. Toyota’s UK guidance recommends weighing the on-road and off-road share of driving; its market and the specifications for vehicles sold there may differ from those in other countries.

Write down the conditions rather than relying on a broad label. Note whether the route is maintained, steep, rocky, muddy, sandy, deeply rutted, or narrow; whether obstacles are slow and controlled or likely to scrape the vehicle; and whether help is nearby if you get stuck. Also account for weather and seasonal changes. A familiar gravel road after rain may present a different traction challenge from the same road in dry conditions.
Decide how much compromise you will accept
More clearance, more protective hardware, different tires, and gearing intended for low-speed control may help on rough terrain, but those qualities do not automatically make a vehicle better for all-day pavement driving. Maneuverability, ride comfort, efficiency, passenger space, cargo capacity, and towing requirements can matter more on the trips you take most often. Mazda’s crossover guidance likewise treats off-road use as conditional on both vehicle capability and terrain, and asks buyers to consider cargo and towing requirements as well as clearance and tires.
A useful selection rule is to buy for the most demanding route you expect to use regularly, with a reasonable margin for conditions, rather than paying a daily-use penalty for a rare scenario. If a route exceeds the driver’s experience or the vehicle’s design, choosing a more capable trim does not eliminate the need to turn around.

Drivetrain: AWD and 4WD are not interchangeable promises
Read how the system works in the owner’s manual. Jeep’s official beginner guidance puts it plainly: “4×4 driving and AWD aren’t the same thing.” That is Jeep brand guidance, not a universal technical standard, but it is a useful warning against treating the labels as proof of equivalent hardware or intended use. A system designed to help on slippery pavement may differ from selectable or full-time 4WD designed for loose surfaces or more demanding off-road use.

Find out whether the system is always active or requires the driver to select a mode, what surfaces each mode is intended for, and whether the vehicle has low range. Do not assume that an SUV with AWD has low range—or that a four-wheel-drive model can use every setting on ordinary pavement. Some part-time 4H/4L systems are intended for loose or slippery surfaces rather than regular hard-surfaced roads. Operating instructions differ by vehicle, so follow that vehicle’s manual rather than general advice from another model’s driver.
Know when high range and low range apply
Low range, when available, is a low-speed, higher-torque mode intended to help control the vehicle in difficult situations. It is relevant to slow, demanding terrain; it is not a shortcut for driving fast or for making an unsuitable route safe. High-range four-wheel drive is a different setting, and the correct mode and shifting procedure depend on the particular system.
Before switching modes, check the manual for the permitted surface, speed, vehicle conditions, and shifting sequence. Do not force a shift or copy a procedure from another make. If the vehicle does not offer low range, do not presume that an electronic terrain mode duplicates it.

- Approach angle: how steep an obstacle can be at the front before the front bumper or another part contacts it.
- Breakover angle: how sharply a crest can rise beneath the vehicle before the underbody contacts it as the vehicle passes over.
- Departure angle: how steep a drop or obstacle can be behind the vehicle before the rear contacts it.
These measurements are useful comparisons, not guarantees: the obstacle’s shape, the vehicle’s load, tire choice, and the exact point being measured all matter. Bumpers, steps, tow hitches, and other low-hanging parts may reduce practical clearance or become the first contact point. Check specifications for the specific trim and inspect the actual equipment fitted, including accessories added by a previous owner.
Manufacturer figures can help screen candidates, but treat them as model-specific claims. Subaru’s US lineup page states that its SUVs and crossovers have at least 8.3 inches of clearance and that named Wilderness models have at least 9 inches. Those figures apply to the vehicles and page described by Subaru, not to other brands, model years, or markets. Mazda cites 8.3–8.6 inches of clearance for the CX-50; verify the exact model year and trim before using that range to make a purchase comparison. Neither figure establishes suitability for a particular obstacle by itself.
Check traction, articulation, tires, and protection
Terrain modes, differential locks, and suspension articulation can help when grip differs from wheel to wheel, but availability and operating limits are vehicle-specific. Establish which aids the trim actually includes, how they are engaged, and what conditions the manual permits. A display or mode selector is not a substitute for knowing how the system behaves.
Tires are part of the vehicle’s capability, not a finishing detail. Check tread pattern, sidewall condition, size, and the manufacturer-approved size and load rating. Consider whether the stock tire suits your actual surfaces; an aggressive tread is not automatically the best choice for a vehicle used mainly on pavement. Check whether there is a suitable spare and the equipment needed to change a tire. On rougher routes, inspect whether underbody protection and recovery points are present and suitable, rather than assuming a trim’s marketing description means they are included.

Choose a vehicle type and trim that fit the terrain
When a crossover can make sense
A crossover can be a reasonable choice for maintained gravel, light trails, and other routes that remain within its design and equipment limits. Mazda’s guidance does not treat crossovers as universally capable or incapable: it makes suitability conditional on terrain and vehicle capability. That means checking clearance, tires, the vehicle’s condition, and the route, not deciding from body style alone.
For a crossover you will use off pavement, pay particular attention to low-mounted parts and tire condition, and be realistic about routes with deep ruts, large rocks, or steep obstacles. If your routine trip calls for more capability than the vehicle was designed to provide, a different vehicle or route is the safer answer.
When more dedicated off-road equipment matters
Frequent rough tracks or slow technical terrain put more weight on low-speed gearing, geometry, traction aids, underbody protection, and recoverability. Compare those features on the exact trim and verify which are standard, optional, or unavailable in your market. An off-road package may add useful equipment, but a package name alone does not reveal what is included or whether it is enough for a specific route.
There is no universal minimum clearance, drivetrain, or best SUV established for all drivers. A fair comparison needs at least the terrain, frequency, model year, market, passenger count, and budget. Without those, a single ranked “best off-road SUV” list can conceal the trade-offs that determine whether a vehicle actually fits.

Keep everyday needs in the decision
Once a vehicle clears the terrain test, compare the practical parts of ownership that shape most of your miles. List how many people and how much gear you carry, whether you tow, what level of comfort you need, and how easy the vehicle is to maneuver where you park or drive daily. Include fuel or energy needs and the costs of maintaining tires and off-road equipment in your own ownership calculation; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal cost comparison among models.
For each exact trim, make a side-by-side checklist of drivetrain, low range, ground clearance, approach/breakover/departure angles, tires, spare, protection, recovery points, passenger and cargo capacity, and towing capability. Mark a feature “not verified” until you confirm it in current specifications, a window sticker, or the vehicle itself. Do not compare one model’s maximum or optional figure with another trim’s standard equipment as if the two were equivalent.
Prepare the SUV and yourself before leaving pavement
Inspect, plan, and carry suitable equipment
Jeep and Ford’s off-road guidance emphasizes checking vehicle condition and tires, planning the route, and carrying relevant supplies. Ford Middle East’s essentials list includes a spare tire, tire-changing kit, deflator, portable compressor, and recovery kit. That is practical preparation guidance, not a claim that one list suits every route or market.
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the owner’s manual. Learn the vehicle-specific 4WD mode limits and shifting procedure, tire-pressure guidance, recovery instructions, and any warnings for the equipment fitted.
- Check the vehicle and tires. Inspect tire condition and the spare, confirm the tire-changing tools are present, and check the vehicle for damage or loose components before departure.
- Plan the route and range. Use approved roads or trails suited to your ability and vehicle. Account for distance, fuel or energy needs, weather, and a way to communicate or change plans where conditions require it.
- Pack equipment appropriate to the route. A compressor and deflator are useful when the route and vehicle guidance call for pressure changes; a spare and repair or recovery supplies should match your tire setup and conditions.
- Consider traveling with another capable vehicle in remote or unfamiliar terrain, where a solo driver may have fewer options if the vehicle becomes stuck or disabled.
Use tire pressure changes carefully
Ford explains that reducing tire pressure can lengthen the tire’s footprint and help on soft ground. That does not mean every vehicle or tire should be aired down by the same amount. Use the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ guidance, account for the load and terrain, and carry a way to reinflate. Under-inflated tires are not appropriate for normal road driving; restore pressure before returning to pavement, and verify it with a gauge.
Treat recovery equipment as a system, not a guarantee
A winch, strap, or recovery point is only useful when the equipment, attachment points, and technique are rated and appropriate for the situation. Never assume a visible hook is a rated recovery point or that a strap can be attached safely to any part of the vehicle. Follow the vehicle and equipment manufacturers’ instructions, and do not attempt a recovery that exceeds your training or gear.
Quick Recap
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by badge: a trim name or “4×4” label does not specify the system, gearing, tires, or protection fitted to the vehicle in your market.
- Using clearance as the whole test: the front, underside, or rear can make contact even when the clearance number looks favorable. Compare the angles and exposed parts too.
- Assuming all-wheel drive means technical off-road ability: verify intended surfaces, available low range, and instructions in the owner’s manual.
- Ignoring tires and condition: tread, sidewall condition, suitable spare provision, and pressure management affect whether a vehicle is prepared for the route.
- Buying for a rare extreme at the cost of routine use: weigh the pavement miles, passenger and cargo needs, towing, comfort, and maneuverability against the off-road features you will use.
- Trying an unfamiliar trail alone without a plan: assess the route against your skill and vehicle, carry suitable supplies, and consider another capable vehicle in remote conditions.
