How to Choose a Renault Electric Car for Your Daily Commute

Choose a Renault EV by weighing your round-trip commute, charging access, realistic range reserve, space needs and occasional longer journeys.

Choose a Renault electric car by matching your round-trip commute and charging access to the exact model and battery—not by treating its maximum WLTP range as a guaranteed distance. Renault UK lists WLTP maxima of 252 miles for Renault 5, 249 miles for Renault 4, 285 miles for Megane and 381 miles for Scenic. Your best fit depends just as much on regular detours, cold-weather or motorway driving, passengers, cargo and access to charging.

Start with your commute and charging routine

Write down the distance you drive on a normal day, including the return journey and regular errands. Then consider how often you take longer or faster routes, and whether you can charge at home, at work or only at public stations. Reliable overnight charging can make a smaller-battery car practical for a routine that would be less convenient if you depended on public charging.

Compare that routine with the WLTP figure for the exact battery and trim you are considering, leaving a sensible reserve rather than planning to arrive nearly empty. WLTP is a standardized comparison figure, not a forecast of your commute range. Renault says temperature, road type, speed, driving style, vehicle weight and options can affect range.

Compare Renault’s UK range figures

Renault UK’s range page lists the following manufacturer WLTP maximums. They are useful for an initial comparison, not independent real-world test results or guaranteed distances.

Model Renault UK published WLTP maximum What to consider for commuting
Renault 5 Up to 252 miles Compact option; check the battery and trim because range differs by powertrain.
Renault 4 Up to 249 miles Compare the exact specification and your passenger and cargo needs.
Megane Up to 285 miles Consider it if your routine needs more range than the smaller options provide.
Scenic Up to 381 miles Its listed maximum is highest here; confirm current local availability and specification.

Figures are from Renault UK’s current range page, accessed in 2026: Renault UK electric vehicles. The Renault 5 product page separately states up to 259 miles, while its powertrain page gives up to 192 miles for the 40 kWh Urban Range battery and up to 250 miles for the 52 kWh Comfort Range battery. That difference is a reason to check the exact model year, market, trim and source page rather than relying on a single headline number.

Which Renault suits different daily needs?

Renault 5: prioritize compact size

The Renault 5 is the compact, city-oriented choice among these models. Renault UK lists it at 3.92 m long with up to 326 L of boot capacity. Those figures can help when comparing parking space and luggage needs, but check the exact trim and battery and consider whether the actual rear-seat and boot layout works for your passengers, child seats or regular cargo. Its UK product page states up to 259 miles, while the powertrain page gives battery-specific WLTP figures; use the latter when comparing battery options.

Renault UK lists two Renault 5 battery choices: 40 kWh Urban Range, with WLTP range up to 192 miles, and 52 kWh Comfort Range, with WLTP range up to 250 miles. The powertrain page estimates a 15–80% DC charge in 31 minutes for the 40 kWh battery and 30 minutes for the 52 kWh battery. These are manufacturer figures, not a promise of a particular stop duration. See Renault 5 E-Tech electric and Renault 5 powertrain details.

Renault 4: compare the exact version against your space needs

The UK range page lists the Renault 4 at up to 249 miles WLTP. Decide whether its specific cabin and cargo configuration fits your routine, then verify battery, equipment and availability for the model year and market you will buy. The published maximum alone does not establish which Renault 4 trim is best for a particular commute.

Megane: consider it when you need more listed range

Renault UK lists the Megane at up to 285 miles WLTP. It may be worth comparing if your daily distance, regular detours or charging pattern call for more range than the smaller choices offer. Confirm the exact configuration and use the same realistic reserve when evaluating it as you would for any other model.

Scenic: look beyond the headline maximum and check availability

Renault UK’s range page lists the Scenic at up to 381 miles WLTP. Renault Group’s 1 September 2026 update describes a revised Scenic with an 89 kWh NMC battery and up to 642 km WLTP, plus a 67 kWh LFP battery and up to 467 km WLTP. The release said the 89 kWh version was available to order in France and the 67 kWh version was expected in autumn 2026; that does not establish UK order availability. Check Renault in your country for the current model and specification before comparing these updated figures with UK listings. The release gives estimated 15–80% DC charging times of 28 minutes for the 89 kWh version and 24 minutes for the 67 kWh version. See Renault Group Media.

Check charging before choosing the car

Charging access can matter as much as battery size. Work out where the car will usually charge and whether those points are dependable for your schedule. Compare the vehicle’s AC and DC charging capability with the supply available at home, work or public stations; charging time depends on the charge point, the vehicle’s onboard charger, battery temperature and state of charge.

  • Home charging: If you have off-street parking, check whether a charge point can be installed at the property and what equipment the chosen trim includes. Suitability depends on the property and its electrical installation.
  • Public or workplace charging: Check that chargers are practical for your route and routine, rather than assuming a listed maximum charging speed will be available at every stop.
  • Cables: Renault’s guidance describes Type 2 cables for certain AC charging setups and notes that requirements depend on the vehicle and installation. Confirm what comes with the exact trim and what your charging setup requires before buying a cable.

Renault’s Renault 5 charging page estimates about 30 minutes for a 15–80% DC charge. Treat that as an indicative manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed stop time. Renault says charging from 15% to 80% is useful for routine charging because the final portion takes longer; it advises charging to 100% before a long trip when full range is needed. Account for longer trips and route planning

If the car must also handle occasional long journeys, compare more than the commute range. Consider DC charging capability, where reliable charging stops fall on your routes and how much time you are willing to spend charging. Renault says Google Maps route planning can select charging stops when the car needs them and can precondition the battery near a planned charger on supported models and versions. Check that the feature is available on the particular vehicle you are considering.

Use this final checklist before deciding

  1. Measure the routine: Include the round trip, regular detours and the faster or colder-weather driving you actually expect.
  2. Choose a realistic reserve: Compare your routine with the exact trim’s WLTP figure, allowing for conditions that can reduce range.
  3. Confirm charging access: Identify where you will charge most often and whether installation, cables or other equipment are needed.
  4. Check practical fit: Assess parking, passengers, child seats and luggage in the actual model and trim.
  5. Verify the specification: Confirm battery, charger, equipment, model year and order availability with Renault for your country.
  6. Test the long-trip plan: Check charging stops and any route-planning or battery-preconditioning features on the specific version.

Renault’s figures and equipment are market- and specification-dependent. The cited range and charging information is UK-centered, and the Scenic update’s order timing is France-specific; prices, incentives, networks and availability can differ elsewhere.
