A dashboard phone holder can keep a phone in a convenient place for navigation, but it does not make interacting with the phone distraction-free or guarantee safer driving. Choose a mount that stays secure and can be positioned without blocking your view, vehicle controls, displays, or airbag path; set up navigation before you move.
What a dashboard phone holder can—and cannot—do
A car phone mount secures a phone in a chosen position. It does not remove the visual, manual, or cognitive demands of using a phone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes texting as involving all three types of distraction. NHTSA reported that 3,208 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024, and that these crashes accounted for 8% of fatal crashes that year. NHTSA also reports that sending or reading a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for five seconds; at 55 mph, it compares that distance to the length of an entire football field. NHTSA distracted-driving statistics The practical approach is to mount and configure the phone while parked, then avoid handling it while driving.
Where to place a dashboard mount
There is no universal best spot: dashboard shapes, sightlines, controls, and airbag locations vary by vehicle. Transport Canada recommends placing a display in the forward view as close as possible to the centre of the road view, but only if it does not obstruct visibility. Its guidance also says a device should not block the roadway, vehicle controls, required displays, or an airbag pathway. Transport Canada display-placement guidelines

- Keep the road view clear. Check the driver’s view from the normal seating position, including the view of traffic and pedestrians.
- Leave controls and displays accessible. The phone should not cover controls or information you need while driving.
- Stay clear of airbags. Do not place a mount or phone where it could interfere with an airbag or its deployment path; consult the vehicle manual if you are unsure.
- Check glare and reflections. A position that seems clear while parked may produce glare or a windshield reflection in daylight or at night.
- Consider movement. Vibration or a mount shifting position can make the screen harder to see and may turn an initially acceptable placement into an obstruction.
Transport Canada’s guidance is voluntary, not a substitute for applicable vehicle regulations or standards. It recommends pairing a portable device with the vehicle’s original-equipment display when available; that is guidance, not a binding requirement.
What to check before buying
No product comparisons or model-specific testing are established here, so there is no evidence-based ranking of brands or mount styles. Use the following checks to assess a particular product’s fit for your vehicle and phone:

- Dashboard compatibility: Check the manufacturer’s stated compatible surfaces and installation method. Confirm the proposed spot is suitable for the dashboard material and shape.
- Phone and case fit: Verify supported phone dimensions, case thickness, and attachment method. If the holder uses a magnetic attachment, confirm what is required for your specific phone and case.
- Secure retention: Look for clear information about how the mount attaches and holds the phone. Product claims about stability are not independent proof of performance; check fit after installation and stop using a mount that loosens or shifts.
- Positioning range: Consider whether the arm or head can be adjusted to a clear viewing position without covering a control, display, or airbag path.
- Installation and removal: If you expect to move the holder or remove the phone often, check how it is secured and released. Ease of use should not come at the expense of a stable installation.
- Charging: If you want charging, verify whether the holder supports wired or wireless charging and whether your phone and case are compatible. Consider cable routing so it does not interfere with driving controls.
Set it up before driving
- Choose a clear location while parked. Check your view of the road, controls, displays, and airbag locations against the vehicle manual and the mount’s instructions.
- Install and secure the holder. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the dashboard surface and attachment method.
- Fit the phone and test the position. Confirm it is retained and remains readable without obstructing your view. Reposition or remove it if it slips, reflects glare, or blocks anything.
- Set navigation before moving. Enter the destination, choose audio guidance if useful, and connect to the vehicle interface where available.
- Leave the phone alone while driving. If you need to change a route or handle the device, pull over and park where it is legal and safe to do so.
Rules depend on where you drive
A dashboard mount does not determine whether a particular phone activity is legal. In the United States, distracted-driving laws are set by states, and NHTSA notes that rules differ; check the law where you drive rather than assuming that a mounted phone makes use permissible. In the UK, government guidance says it is illegal to hold and use a phone while driving, including while stopped in traffic. Hands-free access may be allowed if the phone is not held, but the device must not block the view of the road and traffic ahead.
