How to Check Whether a Used Luxury Car Still Has Its Factory Warranty

Check a used luxury car’s warranty by confirming its VIN-specific status with the automaker or an authorized dealer, then verify the start date, mileage limits and coverage type in the applicable contract.

To check a used luxury car’s factory warranty, get its full VIN, original in-service date and current mileage, then ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to confirm the vehicle-specific coverage and expiration limits. A model year, seller’s description or “certified” badge cannot establish whether coverage remains. Check the written warranty terms as well: factory, certified pre-owned (CPO), battery and separately purchased extended coverage are different types of protection.

What to verify before you buy

A factory warranty is the automaker’s original new-vehicle coverage, subject to its time and mileage limits and the terms that apply to that vehicle. To find out if any remains, you need to establish two things: the car’s actual warranty start point and its current coverage record. The model year alone does not answer either question.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Gather the complete VIN and odometer reading, then establish the original retail delivery or in-service date. Ask the automaker or an authorized dealer to confirm what coverage is recorded for that VIN, including its type and expiration by both date and mileage. Get the answer in writing and compare it with the applicable warranty booklet or contract.

These steps verify recorded coverage; they do not determine whether a particular repair will be covered. A claim can depend on the written terms, exclusions and the facts of the repair. If coverage affects your decision, ask the manufacturer or dealer to explain any uncertainty before you commit.

Step-by-step: check the car’s factory coverage

1. Get the VIN and current mileage

Ask the seller for the full VIN and a clear photo of the odometer. Match the VIN on the car to the one in the listing and any paperwork the seller provides. The manufacturer or dealer uses the VIN to look up vehicle-specific information; a listing’s model year or a general online VIN decode is not a substitute for a live coverage record.

If the seller will not provide the VIN, you cannot get a reliable vehicle-specific confirmation. Treat a verbal claim such as “the warranty is still good” as unverified until the manufacturer or an authorized dealer checks the car’s record.

2. Find the original warranty start date

Ask for the original retail delivery date or first in-service date, and request documentation if available. The clock may have started before the current or first private owner took possession. For example, BMW of North America says its U.S. coverage begins at first retail sale or when a vehicle is first placed into service as a demonstrator, mobility-program or company vehicle, whichever comes first. Porsche’s U.S./Canada terms similarly account for earlier demonstrator, lease or company use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That early start can matter even when the car has had few owners or was sold as a particular model year. If the seller’s date differs from the manufacturer’s record, ask the manufacturer or dealer to resolve the discrepancy rather than choosing the date that gives the car more apparent coverage. Ask whether the date supplied is the first retail delivery date or an earlier qualifying in-service date; the distinction can change the expiration calculation.

3. Check the manufacturer’s record

Use the automaker’s owner portal or app if it provides coverage information. BMW of North America says owners can check coverage status through the My BMW App or My BMW portal. In the app, go to Services & Stores → Service and maintenance → More → BMW Service Inclusion. On the portal, open My Garage and select Warranty. BMW says the display includes vehicle coverage and warranty or maintenance expiration by date and mileage.

For another make, contact its customer-support service or an authorized dealer and ask for a VIN-specific warranty-status lookup. The exact portal features and menu labels vary by manufacturer and may change; if you cannot locate the information online, ask support where the current record is available. A reader may reasonably ask, “Is there a place on the manufacturer’s website where I can check warranty status?” The answer depends on the automaker: BMW makes status available in its app and portal, while for other brands you should check the owner portal or call the manufacturer or dealer to learn what VIN-specific lookup is offered.

4. Ask for the details in writing

Request the VIN-specific coverage record from the seller or dealer, along with the warranty booklet or contract that applies to the vehicle. If you are buying from a private seller, verify the information directly with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. Record the date of the confirmation and the name of the source.

Make sure the response identifies the coverage type, its start trigger, remaining time and mileage, and any transfer condition. If the record shows more than one layer of coverage, ask which one is active now and when the next layer begins. Manufacturer warranty pages direct owners to the warranty literature or a dealer for details and exclusions; a brief status screen is not a substitute for those terms.

Ask the representative to state both the calendar expiration and the mileage limit, and which one ends coverage first. Most of the examples below use a limit expressed as a number of months or years or miles, whichever comes first. A car can therefore reach its mileage limit before the calendar term ends, or the date limit before the odometer reaches the cap. Confirm the record’s “as of” date and mileage, too, so a status viewed earlier is not mistaken for a current one.

5. Match the record to the contract

Read the warranty document for the vehicle’s exact model year and, where relevant, powertrain and market. Check the coverage scope, exclusions, expiration rules, transfer provisions and any procedural requirements. Ask whether the recorded history, modifications or servicing affect eligibility under that contract; do not assume that a general rule applies without checking the applicable terms.

Keep the record, booklet and any written answers with your purchase documents. If the seller’s description and the manufacturer’s record conflict, treat the manufacturer’s VIN-specific confirmation and applicable written contract as the basis for further questions, not the listing language.

Factory warranty, CPO and extended coverage are not interchangeable

A car can have more than one kind of protection, and a seller may use “warranty” without making clear which one they mean. Ask the seller to identify each layer separately and confirm its start date, expiration limits and transfer conditions. A CPO designation by itself does not prove that a particular benefit will pass to a later buyer.

Coverage type What to establish Why it matters
Original factory warranty Original start trigger; current coverage status; time and mileage limits; applicable booklet It is the manufacturer’s new-vehicle coverage, and the clock may have started before the current owner acquired the car.
Certified pre-owned coverage CPO sale date; when CPO coverage begins; its own duration and mileage limit; whether it transfers CPO coverage has separate terms. Depending on the program, it may begin after remaining new-car coverage ends or at the CPO sale if that coverage has already expired.
Extended warranty or service contract Contract provider; covered repairs; start and end dates; exclusions; transfer procedure and fees It is a separate contract, not proof that the original factory warranty remains active.
Battery-specific coverage Covered component and condition; in-service start date; time and mileage limits; any capacity-loss terms Battery protection does not establish that general vehicle coverage is still active.

For every layer, ask whether it is active now, what event starts it, and whether the named buyer can use it. Do not assume that one program’s transfer rule applies to another or that a benefit transfers simply because the vehicle itself is sold. For a CPO car, record when the CPO sale took place: the date can determine which transfer policy applies. For any separate service contract, ask who administers it and whether the transfer must be completed by a deadline or for a fee; a seller’s promise to “include” it is not a substitute for confirming that the contract is in force and transferable.

How manufacturer terms can differ

The examples below are manufacturer terms for particular markets, not a universal luxury-car standard. They illustrate why the VIN record and the correct written terms matter. The figures are contract limits, not guarantees that a specific used car still has coverage.

Manufacturer and market New-vehicle coverage described by the manufacturer CPO or other coverage described
BMW of North America, U.S. 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The period starts at first retail sale or earlier qualifying in-service use; the U.S. warranty applies to the first retail purchaser and each subsequent purchaser. BMW USA describes one year of CPO limited warranty with unlimited miles after the four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle or SAV limited warranty. It separately describes high-voltage battery defect coverage of eight years/100,000 miles from the in-service date, plus a capacity-loss provision for 2022–2025 certified EV models. Battery coverage is separate from general vehicle warranty status.
Audi of America, U.S. Four years from the original in-service date or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The CPO limited warranty lasts one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. If no original new-vehicle warranty remains when the CPO sale occurs, the CPO coverage is effective at purchase. Audi directs owners to the applicable literature or dealer for limitations and exclusions.
Porsche Cars North America, U.S./Canada Four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The start is first retail delivery or earlier qualifying demonstrator, lease or company use. Porsche Approved CPO coverage begins when new-vehicle coverage expires and lasts two years with unlimited miles. Use the warranty booklet for the exact model year and powertrain.
Lexus Europe The European page describes a three-year manufacturer warranty with a mileage cap that varies by market, and says the remaining term transfers to subsequent owners. The page also describes Lexus Relax and battery programs with specific annual service or check conditions. These European terms do not establish coverage for a vehicle in another market.

For a U.S.-specification BMW, BMW of North America says the new-vehicle limited warranty applies to the first retail purchaser and each subsequent purchaser. That does not mean every BMW-branded benefit is transferable under the same rule: the CPO program has its own conditions. The BMW CPO transfer guidance available in the FAQ search excerpt lists current coverage, eligibility, documentation, a $200 fee and an application within 60 days. Because the FAQ could not be opened to verify the full wording, have BMW confirm the requirements for the specific vehicle before relying on them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audi’s U.S. CPO transfer rule depends on when the CPO sale took place. Audi says coverage from CPO sales before August 1, 2023, is transferable to a subsequent purchaser; for CPO sales on or after that date, it is non-transferable and may be used only by the original CPO purchaser. Confirm the CPO sale date and policy with the participating dealer. These rules concern Audi CPO coverage, not the separate question of remaining original new-vehicle coverage.

These distinctions are why it is worth checking the contract version tied to the exact vehicle rather than relying on a brand-wide summary. The term “unlimited miles,” for example, describes the mileage limit for a stated CPO period; it does not erase the separate time limit or make that CPO term part of the original factory warranty. Likewise, BMW’s eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery coverage is a separate component-specific provision, not evidence that the whole car remains under new-vehicle coverage.

What to do when dates, mileage or records do not line up

The seller gives a model year but no in-service date

Ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to look up the VIN and identify the recorded start date. Do not calculate the remaining term from the model year. If the start date cannot be confirmed, the remaining calendar coverage cannot be established reliably.

The seller’s mileage differs from the coverage record

Ask the dealer or manufacturer to explain the difference and check the car’s current odometer reading against the applicable mileage limit. A mismatch should be resolved before you rely on the stated expiration. Keep a copy of the record or written explanation you receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The portal shows an expiration but not what it covers

Ask which program the displayed date refers to—original factory, CPO, maintenance, battery or another contract—and request its governing booklet. Expiration information alone does not establish coverage scope or exclusions.

The seller says the car is “certified”

Ask which dealer or program certified it, when the CPO sale occurred, and for the contract and transfer rules. Then confirm the record with the participating dealer or automaker. Certification language in a listing is not enough to determine whether CPO coverage is active or available to you.

The vehicle was sold in another country or market

Ask the manufacturer which market’s warranty terms apply to that VIN and request the corresponding contract. Warranty duration and mileage limits can differ by region; the Lexus Europe terms, for example, specify local-market variation. Do not apply a U.S. figure to an imported or non-U.S. car without confirmation.

The seller and manufacturer show different dates

Ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer to explain which date is recorded as the first retail sale or qualifying in-service event, and whether supporting documentation can correct an error. Do not treat the seller’s estimate as a replacement for the record. Until the discrepancy is resolved, calculate no remaining term from an assumed start date.

The car has an EV battery warranty but unclear vehicle coverage

Ask for the battery terms separately, including the covered component, start date, mileage and any capacity-loss provision. Do not use a battery warranty’s longer term to infer that other vehicle components remain covered; the two records and contracts answer different questions.

What a VIN decoder or vehicle-history report can—and cannot—tell you

A VIN decoder may identify basic vehicle details, and a history report may show events recorded by its data providers. Neither is the manufacturer’s current warranty-status record. For live coverage status, expiration limits and program terms, use the automaker’s portal, customer support or an authorized dealer. A seller’s maintenance records can be useful for understanding service history, but they do not independently confirm what the manufacturer currently records as active coverage.

A practical message to send the seller or dealer

Use a written request that makes the questions specific:

Please provide the complete VIN, the current odometer reading, and the vehicle’s original retail delivery or in-service date. Please also provide the manufacturer or dealer record showing all active coverage for this VIN, with each coverage type and its expiration date and mileage, plus the applicable warranty or CPO booklet. If any coverage is transferable, please confirm the transfer conditions for a subsequent owner in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you receive the answer, compare it with the VIN on the car and the odometer photo. If the record includes several coverage layers, use the contract for each one rather than treating them as a single warranty. If the seller cannot provide clear documentation, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer directly before relying on the claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check a used luxury car’s factory warranty by VIN?

Yes. Give the complete VIN to the manufacturer’s customer-support team or an authorized dealer and ask for the vehicle-specific coverage status, original in-service date, and expiration by date and mileage. A VIN decoder or vehicle-history report is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s current record.

Can I use the model year to work out whether the warranty is still active?

No. The warranty clock can start at first retail delivery or an earlier qualifying in-service event, such as demonstrator or company use. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the start date recorded for the VIN.

Is there a website where I can check warranty status?

It depends on the make. BMW says coverage status and expiration information are available through the My BMW App and My BMW portal. For another brand, check its owner portal or contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to ask what VIN-specific lookup is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a CPO badge mean the warranty transfers to me?

Not necessarily. CPO terms and transfer rules differ by manufacturer and may depend on the date of the CPO sale. Audi, for example, says U.S. CPO coverage from sales before August 1, 2023, is transferable, while coverage from sales on or after that date is not transferable to a later buyer. Confirm the specific vehicle’s contract and policy with the participating dealer.

What should I get in writing before buying?

Request the VIN-specific coverage record, original in-service date, current mileage, each active coverage type, expiration date and mileage, applicable booklet or contract, and any transfer procedure, deadline or fee. Confirm unresolved questions directly with the manufacturer or authorized dealer.

Does a battery warranty mean the whole car is still under warranty?

No. Battery-specific coverage is a separate layer. Confirm its components, limits and any capacity-loss terms separately from general new-vehicle or CPO coverage.

The Bottom Line

Before relying on a used luxury car’s warranty, match its VIN and odometer to a current manufacturer or authorized-dealer record. Confirm the original in-service date, each active coverage layer, expiration by time and mileage, and the written terms and transfer rules that apply to you. Treat a model year, CPO badge, third-party report or seller’s verbal assurance as a prompt to verify—not proof of active factory coverage.
