Ask for the exact set number, then compare the seller’s contents with that set’s instructions or a reliable inventory. A photo of a finished car—or a seller’s claim that it is “complete”—cannot establish that every required part is present. Check build parts separately from figures, instructions, stickers, the box and spare pieces, because those may matter to you even when they are not required for a build-complete set.
Start with the set number, not the car’s appearance
LEGO car sets can look similar while using different parts and quantities. A general name such as “red race car” is not enough to identify the correct inventory. Ask the seller for the set number and verify it against the box, instructions, or another reliable reference for the exact model.

If the seller does not know the number, ask for clear pictures of the box or instruction booklet, including the cover and any printed set number. If neither is available, you may be able to identify the model from its distinctive features, but do not treat a guessed identification as a dependable basis for a completeness check. Without a confirmed set number, you cannot reliably compare the contents with that set’s parts list.
Make sure the reference matches the set
Use the instructions or a reliable inventory for the exact set, not a similar-looking car, a related model, or an alternate build from another set. If the reference distinguishes versions, stickered parts, assemblies, or alternate models, pay attention to those notes. A parts list is only useful if it describes the set and version the seller is offering.

BrickLink’s Inventory Guidelines describe using an inventory comparison tool to identify missing items when LEGO data is available. The guidance also treats instructions and parts lists as stronger evidence for an inventory than a picture of the box. If a trustworthy parts list is not available, the instructions can still provide a practical reference for checking what the build requires.
Decide what “complete” means for your purchase
“Complete” can refer to the parts required to build the model, or to a more collector-oriented package with figures, instructions, stickers, spare elements and the original box. Those are different expectations. BrickLink’s Help Center definition of a complete used set is that it contains all parts needed to build the models shown in the instructions, including alternate models. Under that marketplace definition, the original box and extra parts are not required; if the instructions are missing, the listing should disclose that.
That definition is useful for checking build completeness, but it does not decide what you should expect from a particular listing. You may want a figure, sticker sheet, instruction booklet or box, especially if the price or listing description suggests those are included. Confirm each item separately rather than assuming the word “complete” covers every accessory or piece of packaging.

Agree on the contents before paying
- Build parts: all parts needed for the instructed model or models.
- Figures: ask whether any figures shown in the instructions or listing are included, and whether they are the expected versions.
- Instructions: confirm whether the booklet is included and whether it is complete and legible.
- Stickers: ask whether stickers are already applied, supplied on a sheet, missing, or damaged, if their presence matters to you.
- Box and packaging: confirm separately; these are not required by BrickLink’s build-complete definition.
- Spare pieces: ask whether the seller has them, but do not count them as a substitute for a required part.
Be particularly clear about whether “the car” means only the main model or every model shown in the instructions. BrickLink’s definition includes alternate models, but a seller may be using the word casually to mean that the displayed car is assembled. If the set’s instructions show alternate builds and you care about being able to make them, ask the seller to check against those instructions rather than just the finished primary model.
Use photos as a screen, then verify the inventory
Request a photograph of all loose contents spread out on a plain surface. A picture of only the assembled car is not enough: pieces inside the build are hidden, and a model can look finished despite a missing part or a substitution. Ask for close-ups of small elements and distinctive parts that are difficult to identify in the wide shot. If figures, stickers, alternate builds, or spare pieces are part of the deal, ask for separate photos of those too.
Photos can help establish what appears to be present, but they do not prove the quantities. One visible small element may look like several in a crowded picture, and parts can be obscured or stacked. Compare counts against the reference, not just whether each type of piece appears at least once. A set may require multiple matching elements.

Check beyond the visible bodywork
Compare the seller’s contents with parts required inside the car as well as those visible on its exterior. A completed-looking model may conceal missing interior or structural parts. Ask whether the car was built with the original parts from that set or whether the seller substituted pieces. If there were substitutions, ask which parts were changed and whether the seller still has the originals.

Make the photo useful
Ask the seller to spread the contents out rather than photograph a pile or a closed container. A wide shot can show the overall contents, while close-ups can help identify small or distinctive parts. If the seller has already built the car, request photos of the loose pieces as well as the model. A picture of the finished car answers what the model looks like; it does not show which parts are inside it or whether every quantity in the inventory is present.
When reviewing a photo, note which parts are visible and which remain unclear. Do not infer that a hard-to-see element is included simply because it might be beneath another piece. Ask for another angle or a count of that item. This turns an attractive listing picture into a specific verification request without pretending the picture alone confirms completeness.
Compare the pieces using one of two routes

When possible, combine them: have the seller compare the inventory and provide photos of the contents, then ask for a build-based check if you can inspect the set in person. Neither method guarantees that every element is correct if the set number or reference is wrong, or if variants are mistaken for one another.

A list may show several of the same element, and a check that marks a type “present” after finding just one will miss a shortage. The comparison is only as useful as its reference: BrickLink’s guidance gives instructions and parts lists more weight than a box picture when determining inventory. If the contents or set version are uncertain, resolve that first instead of treating a partial match as a verified count.

Building from the instructions asks a different question from counting loose parts. It tests whether the available pieces can support the instructed build and may reveal substitutions that a quick visual review overlooks. It still does not settle whether the seller is including the box, spare pieces, or other items you agreed to buy; those need their own confirmation.
Read inventory categories carefully
Catalog inventories may separate required parts from extras, counterparts and alternates. BrickLink’s inventory guidance distinguishes these sections, and its Studio Help Center explains importing a set’s inventory in sections. Those categories matter because a number shown in a catalog may not mean that every listed item is a required build part.
- Regular parts: the primary inventory items to compare against the build.
- Extra parts: spare elements included with a set. A missing spare does not necessarily mean the model cannot be built, and a spare should not be counted as a replacement for a different required part.
- Counterparts: related or paired inventory items, such as a stickered piece or an assembly. Check the instructions and inventory notes to see what is actually expected.
- Alternates: items associated with alternate models or inventory treatments. Confirm whether the reference expects them for the set and which model or build they relate to.
Do not assume two catalog entries are interchangeable because they look similar in a small image. A stickered and unstickered part, or two variants of an element, may have different appearances or collector value. Check the instructions and inventory notes, and ask the seller which version is present if it affects your decision.

In practical terms, keep the questions “Can I build it?” and “Does the listing include the exact items I want?” separate. For example, an extra piece may be absent without preventing the instructed model from being built, while a required piece cannot be treated as present merely because a different-looking spare is in the bag. Likewise, a stickered counterpart or assembly may be relevant to the expected appearance even if a superficially similar piece is visible. Use the inventory notes and instructions to establish what each listing item represents before deciding that one can stand in for another.
Ask the seller precise questions
A specific request is more useful than asking simply, “Is it complete?” Ask for information that can be checked against the set reference and keep the answer with the listing details.
- What is the exact set number? Can you show it on the box or instruction booklet?
- Are all pieces from this set included, or were any parts substituted, lost or replaced?
- Have you checked the contents against the instructions or a parts inventory? If so, which reference did you use?
- Can you photograph all contents spread out, with close-ups of small or distinctive parts?
- Are the figures included? Are they the versions shown for this set?
- Are the stickers present, already applied, or still on the original sheet?
- Are the instructions, box, packaging and spare pieces included? Please list any that are missing.
- If you have not checked every item, which parts or categories remain unverified?
If the seller cannot confirm every element, ask them to list what has been checked and what is uncertain. A written disclosure lets you judge the purchase on its actual contents rather than on an unqualified “complete” claim.

You can make that request easier to answer by asking the seller to state what they compared against and to identify exceptions, rather than asking for an assurance with no detail. For instance: “Please confirm the set number, say whether you checked the contents against the instructions or an inventory, and list any missing or substituted parts. Please also confirm whether the figures, sticker sheet, booklet, box and spare pieces are included.” The aim is not to make the seller use catalog terminology; it is to make the offered contents and remaining uncertainties explicit.
What to do when a part is missing or uncertain
First identify the exact missing or questionable item from the set instructions or reliable inventory. Record its description and, when available, the element ID printed in the parts list at the back of LEGO instructions. LEGO’s guidance on replacement pieces explains how to identify an element and request pieces for a new set. That guidance does not establish that replacement coverage applies to a used purchase, so do not assume LEGO will replace a part missing from a secondhand set.
Then ask the seller whether the piece is included but not pictured, available separately, or definitely missing. If it is missing, decide whether the set is still worth buying to you and clarify the price or terms before completing the purchase. Do not treat an unverified part as present simply because it is small, hidden, or likely to be in a mixed bag.
When you contact the seller, be exact: give the set number and the part description, and include the element ID if the instructions provide one. This avoids a vague exchange about “the small black piece” and gives both sides a concrete item to check. If the seller says a replacement is available, ask whether it is the correct version and whether it will be included in the sale. The element ID is useful for identifying the part; it is not proof that a used-set buyer is eligible for LEGO replacement support.
How to make the decision
- Good evidence: the set number is verified, a matching instructions or inventory reference is available, and the seller has checked quantities or built the model while disclosing any exceptions.
- Some evidence, remaining uncertainty: the seller provides a broad contents photo or reports a partial check, but small parts, quantities, variants, or hidden pieces remain unverified. Decide whether the price and risk are acceptable to you.
- Weak evidence: the set number is unknown, the only evidence is a finished-car photo, or “complete” is not accompanied by a contents check. Treat completeness as unconfirmed.
There is no published probability in the cited guidance for how often used LEGO car sets are incomplete. The practical choice is therefore based on the specific listing’s evidence, the importance of any missing accessories to you, and your willingness to accept unverified contents—not on an assumed average risk.
A seller inventory check is generally the quicker route when the set number and a suitable list are available. Building from the instructions takes longer and may be impractical before purchase, but it can expose build problems that a photograph misses. A photo-only review is quickest, yet leaves quantity and hidden-part questions open. Choose the level of checking that matches how much uncertainty you are willing to accept; no one method guarantees completeness.
