How to Check Whether a Used Dodge Hornet Has Open Recalls

Use the Hornet’s VIN—not just its model year—to check for unrepaired recalls. Learn how to look it up, verify uncertain results, and understand what a clean search does and does not mean.

Check the exact Dodge Hornet’s 17-character VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. A model-year search or a seller’s assurance cannot tell you whether a particular car still has an unrepaired safety recall. If the result is unclear or a campaign was recently announced, confirm the VIN-specific status with Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer before buying or driving the vehicle.

The check is free and takes the vehicle’s VIN or, where supported, its license plate. If NHTSA lists an open safety recall, the repair is free at a manufacturer dealership. A clean result is useful, but it is not a complete service history or a guarantee that the car has no mechanical problems.

Check the Hornet by VIN, not just by model year

A recall can apply to some vehicles within a model year or production range without applying to every Dodge Hornet from that year. The key question is whether an unrepaired recall is associated with the specific car you are considering. NHTSA’s VIN or license-plate lookup is the first public check for unrepaired U.S. safety recalls; it is not a complete vehicle-history report or a mechanical inspection.

You cannot determine a specific used Hornet’s current recall status without checking its VIN in a current lookup. The examples below show why a model-level list should not be treated as a verdict on an individual car. Even when a campaign is described as affecting 2024 or 2025 Hornets, the range does not mean every vehicle from that year is included, nor does it tell you whether a covered vehicle has already received the remedy.

For a purchase, check the car you will actually take home, not just a similar Hornet in an online article or a different vehicle in the seller’s inventory. The VIN ties the lookup to that individual vehicle. If the listing does not show the VIN, ask the seller for it or inspect the vehicle and its paperwork in person before relying on a model-level search.

How to check a used Dodge Hornet for open recalls

  1. Get the full 17-character VIN

NHTSA says the VIN is visible at the lower left of the windshield and on the vehicle registration; it may also appear on insurance documents. Match the number to the exact vehicle being considered, rather than relying on a VIN copied from another listing or document. If you are checking a car in person, compare the windshield VIN with its paperwork.

Use the complete 17-character number. A partial VIN, model year, trim, or description such as “2024 Hornet” cannot substitute for a VIN-specific search. If the number on a document does not match the one on the car, pause and resolve the mismatch before interpreting any recall result. The purpose of the check is to identify campaigns tied to that particular vehicle, so accuracy at this first step matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s lookup

Open NHTSA Recalls and enter the VIN. The tool also supports a license-plate search. A VIN or plate search is the relevant option for finding unrepaired recalls associated with a specific vehicle. A year, make, and model search returns general recall information; it cannot establish whether a particular Hornet has an open repair.

Read the lookup result as a status check, not as a general list of every issue reported for Hornets. A model search can be useful for learning that a campaign exists, but the VIN-based result is the step that connects a recall to the car you are evaluating. If you use a plate search, make sure the plate belongs to the vehicle you intend to buy and verify any uncertain result using the VIN.

Make a note of when you checked. NHTSA says VINs for some recent recalls are added continuously, so the result can change as affected vehicles are identified. A check made well before a purchase may not answer the same question as a current lookup immediately before you decide.

  3. Record any result that needs attention

If the result lists an unrepaired recall, save the recall number and description. Those details will help the dealer identify the campaign and answer questions about the remedy. A result showing a recall for a model or production range is not, by itself, proof that the car in front of you is affected or that its repair is still open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the result with your purchase notes, especially if you are comparing several vehicles. Record which VIN you searched and whether the result described an unrepaired recall. If the result is unclear, do not try to infer coverage from the model year alone; give the VIN and any recall number shown to Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer and ask them to clarify that vehicle’s status.

  4. Confirm unclear or recent results with Dodge/Mopar or a dealer

Contact an authorized Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram dealer with the VIN and recall number, if one is shown. Ask whether the campaign applies to that VIN, whether the remedy has already been completed, and how to arrange the repair if it remains open. FCA recall notices also direct owners to Mopar’s recall site and the Mopar Owner’s Companion App.

This manufacturer route is particularly useful if the campaign was recently announced, the NHTSA result appears incomplete, or a seller says a repair was completed but the available record does not make the status clear. The dealer can help connect the VIN to the campaign and explain the remedy. If you are still negotiating the purchase, ask for the confirmation before treating the recall question as settled.

When you call, have the VIN in front of you and identify the question plainly: whether any recall remains open for that vehicle, whether the named campaign applies, and what the dealer says has been completed. If a repair is needed, ask the dealer how to schedule it and follow any safety directions in the manufacturer’s notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Ask for documentation, then verify it

Ask the seller for paperwork showing completed recall repairs, but do not treat a verbal assurance or a general recall list as the final check. The VIN lookup is the central public check for unrepaired recalls; dealer confirmation is useful when a record is ambiguous, a repair is claimed, or a campaign is new.

A seller may be accurate that a Hornet had a recall campaign or that work was done, but those statements do not by themselves answer whether this VIN is affected or whether the work addressed the applicable remedy. Compare the seller’s documents with the VIN-specific lookup and ask the dealer if the records disagree or leave a question open. A screenshot of a model-year recall list is not proof that the individual car has been repaired.

Keep any repair paperwork or dealer confirmation with the car’s other documents. It can help you distinguish a recall that was completed from one that still needs attention. If the seller cannot provide a clear answer, treat the status as unconfirmed rather than assuming that a recall is closed.

  6. Arrange any open safety-recall repair

NHTSA says an open recall repair is free at a local dealership. Contact the manufacturer’s dealership to schedule the remedy, and follow any safety instructions in the manufacturer’s notice while you wait. If you have not bought the car, resolve the status with the seller and dealer before treating the vehicle as ready for use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a listed recall, use the campaign description and the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing how serious the issue is or whether it is safe to keep driving. A recall notice may identify a specific concern and remedy; follow its guidance. The recall repair itself is not a reason to rely on an unrelated diagnostic scan or to postpone contacting a dealer.

If you are considering a vehicle with an open recall, you can ask the seller to have the remedy completed or coordinate with the dealer before the sale. Whatever arrangement you make, verify the VIN-specific status rather than relying only on a promise that the work will happen later. After the repair, retain the documentation and recheck the record if you need confirmation that the campaign has been closed.

What each recall-check route can tell you

Route What it is useful for What it does not establish
NHTSA VIN or plate lookup Checking for unrepaired U.S. safety recalls associated with the specific vehicle. It does not show recalls already repaired, every non-safety manufacturer campaign, or every recall outside its stated coverage limits.
NHTSA year/make/model search Finding general recall information for a vehicle model or year. It does not confirm whether a particular Hornet is affected or whether its repair remains open.
Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer Confirming VIN-specific applicability, clarifying an uncertain result, and arranging a recall remedy. A seller’s statement or an unverified model-level list is not a substitute for confirmation tied to the vehicle’s VIN.

The routes work best in sequence: use NHTSA to identify a possible open recall, then use Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer to resolve a result that is listed, unclear, or newly announced.

NHTSA is the straightforward first stop because it provides a public VIN- or plate-based check for unrepaired safety recalls. Dodge/Mopar and a franchised dealer serve a different purpose: they can confirm a manufacturer-specific question and help arrange the repair. These are complementary checks, not competing sources to choose between. If NHTSA shows a recall, use the manufacturer route to understand and resolve it; if a recent campaign or record is uncertain, the manufacturer route is also the sensible follow-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A generic OBD-II scanner is not an alternative to either route. It reads diagnostic trouble codes; it does not establish that all applicable manufacturer recall repairs have been completed. A VIN decoder may identify vehicle attributes, but it is not a recall-status record. Likewise, a broader used-car inspection or vehicle-history check may be useful for other purchase questions, but it does not replace the free, current VIN lookup and manufacturer confirmation for recall status.

Why a clean NHTSA result has limits

NHTSA describes its lookup as a tool for unrepaired recalls, but it does not cover every kind of vehicle issue or every historical campaign. According to NHTSA’s recall lookup guidance, a VIN search does not show:

  • Recalls that have already been repaired.
  • Some recently announced recalls before all affected VINs have been identified.
  • Safety recalls more than 15 years old, unless the manufacturer offers broader coverage.
  • Manufacturer customer-service campaigns and other non-safety campaigns.
  • Recalls involving international vehicles.

That is why a clean result should be read narrowly: it means the lookup did not show an unrepaired recall within the tool’s coverage at the time you checked. It does not certify the vehicle’s mechanical condition, reveal every service campaign, or prove that no new VIN determination is pending. For a recent campaign or an uncertain record, contact the manufacturer or dealer.

The first limitation is important when comparing a search result with the seller’s records: a recall that has already been repaired may not appear as an open item. A clean lookup therefore does not mean the Hornet has never been recalled. It means there is no applicable unrepaired recall shown within the lookup’s coverage when you performed the check. Repair history and current open status are different questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The second limitation matters for new announcements. A manufacturer may still be identifying every affected VIN after a campaign has been announced. NHTSA says some recently announced recalls may not yet show all affected vehicles, and VINs can be added continuously. If you have heard about a new campaign and the tool gives no clear answer, do not use that result alone to rule out applicability. Check again later and ask Dodge/Mopar or a dealer to confirm.

The age and campaign limits matter too. The tool may not display safety recalls more than 15 years old unless the manufacturer provides broader coverage, and it is not a full catalogue of non-safety customer-service campaigns. It also does not cover recalls involving international vehicles. These are boundaries of what the lookup reports, not evidence that a car has been inspected or that every possible vehicle concern has been resolved.

NHTSA’s recall FAQ states: “Do recalls expire? Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” The lookup’s age limitation is different: it describes what the tool displays, not whether a recall itself ceases to exist. If an older Hornet or a past repair raises a question, ask the manufacturer or dealer rather than treating a missing entry as proof that the campaign never existed.

A recall check is only one part of a used-car decision. It answers a narrow question about reported unrepaired safety recalls, not whether the car is mechanically sound, whether all maintenance was done, or whether a non-safety service campaign applies. Handle those questions separately and do not interpret a successful lookup as a substitute for a broader vehicle evaluation.

Examples of Dodge Hornet recalls—and what they do not prove

Official recall documents illustrate why checking the VIN matters. Each example applies to certain vehicles, not automatically to every Hornet in the listed years. The affected-population figures below describe campaigns, not how many vehicles still need repair.

Campaign Issue described in the official document What a buyer should take from it
25V-246, 2025 NHTSA’s Part 573 report describes certain 2023–2025 Dodge Hornets with a rearview image that may not display during a backing event. The report lists 40,372 affected vehicles and a suspect production period of August 31, 2022, through April 1, 2025. The 40,372 figure is the reported affected population in the 2025 recall report, not the number currently awaiting repair. Check the specific vehicle’s VIN.
24V-752 / FCA B7B FCA’s owner notice describes a brake pedal assembly that may collapse on certain 2024–2025 Dodge Hornets. The notice says an authorized dealer will reinforce the brake pedal arm at no charge. The model years alone do not show whether an individual car is covered or repaired. Confirm the VIN and follow the notice’s instructions.
24V-209 / FCA 32B FCA’s notice describes certain 2024 Dodge Hornets with manufacturer labels missing rim and tire size designation information. The stated remedy is a corrected label at no charge. This is another campaign for certain vehicles, not every 2024 Hornet. Use the VIN to establish applicability and repair status.

These notices explain the kinds of issues and remedies involved in specific campaigns. They do not tell you whether a car currently for sale has an open recall; only a current vehicle-specific check and, when needed, dealer confirmation can answer that.

For example, the 25V-246 report’s 40,372 figure is the population reported as affected by that campaign. It is not an open-repair count, a count of vehicles for sale, or an estimate of the risk for one Hornet. The reported production window is useful context for why vehicles of different build dates may be treated differently, but it still does not replace the VIN lookup. Do not conclude that every Hornet in the 2023–2025 model years is included because those years appear in the report.

The 24V-752 / B7B notice concerns a possible brake pedal assembly collapse on certain 2024–2025 vehicles and describes reinforcing the brake pedal arm as the dealer remedy. Because the concern involves a brake pedal, take the manufacturer’s instructions seriously and ask a dealer about the specific VIN rather than trying to judge applicability from a quick visual check. The notice does not mean every Hornet from those model years has the condition.

The 24V-209 / 32B notice concerns missing rim and tire size designation information on manufacturer labels in certain 2024 Hornets. The stated remedy is a corrected label at no charge. This example is a reminder that recall subjects and remedies vary: some involve vehicle operation, while others address required information. In either case, applicability and repair status still depend on the vehicle, not the headline or model-year range.

These examples can help you recognize recall numbers and understand why a result deserves follow-up. They should not be used as a substitute for the lookup or as a checklist that settles a specific car’s status. A Hornet may be outside a campaign’s affected VIN range, or it may have had the repair completed; only a current check and appropriate manufacturer confirmation can resolve that for the vehicle you are considering.

Recheck if the vehicle or campaign is recently updated

NHTSA says VINs for some recent recalls are added continuously. If a recall was just announced or the lookup result seems incomplete, check again later and contact Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer rather than assuming the vehicle is unaffected. NHTSA’s recall resources also describe the SaferCar app, which can send alerts after you add a vehicle and its VIN.

For a used-car purchase, run the lookup close to the time you make the decision. Save the result and any dealer confirmation with the vehicle’s paperwork so you can distinguish an open campaign from a completed repair. If you keep the Hornet, adding its VIN to SaferCar can help you receive alerts, but it does not change the need to follow manufacturer instructions or arrange a repair when one is required.

Rechecking is especially useful if you first searched before a new campaign was announced, if a seller mentions a recall that does not appear in the current result, or if a dealer says affected VINs are still being determined. A new search is not a substitute for asking the manufacturer when the answer remains uncertain; it is a way to see whether the public record has been updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if a used Dodge Hornet has open recalls?

Find the Hornet’s full 17-character VIN and enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls. You can also search by license plate. Use Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer to clarify a listed, recent, or ambiguous result.

Can I check a Dodge Hornet’s recalls by license plate or model year?

NHTSA supports a license-plate search, but a year/make/model search provides general recall information rather than a status for one specific vehicle. The VIN is the key identifier to use when confirming the car you are considering.

Does a clean NHTSA result mean the Hornet has never had a recall?

No. The lookup does not show recalls that have already been repaired, and it has other stated coverage limits. A clean result means no unrepaired recall was shown within the tool’s coverage at the time of the search; it is not a complete service history or mechanical inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Dodge Hornet recalls expire?

NHTSA’s recall FAQ says, “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” However, its lookup may not display safety recalls more than 15 years old unless the manufacturer offers broader coverage. Contact Dodge/Mopar or a dealer with questions about an older campaign.

Are open recall repairs free on a used Dodge Hornet?

NHTSA says open safety recall repairs are free at a local manufacturer dealership. Confirm the campaign and remedy with an authorized dealer using the VIN, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

If a recall affected certain 2024 or 2025 Hornets, does it apply to all of them?

No. The published campaigns describe certain vehicles or production ranges, not every Hornet in a model year. Check the individual VIN and ask a dealer to confirm applicability and whether the repair remains open.

Can an OBD-II scanner or seller’s paperwork confirm that a recall is closed?

An OBD-II scanner reads diagnostic trouble codes; it does not establish that manufacturer recall repairs are complete. Seller paperwork can help document work, but verify unclear status through the VIN lookup or an authorized dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a recall was just announced but my VIN has no result?

NHTSA says VINs for some recent recalls are added continuously. Contact Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer with the VIN, follow any manufacturer safety instructions, and recheck the official lookup later.

The Bottom Line

Use the exact Hornet’s 17-character VIN for a current NHTSA lookup, then contact Dodge/Mopar or an authorized dealer if a recall appears or the status is uncertain. A model-year list, seller assurance, diagnostic scanner, or clean result alone does not settle every recall question. Open safety-recall repairs are free at a manufacturer dealership; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the repair confirmation.
