A CO₂ figure alone does not tell you what you owe or whether you qualify: rules can depend on registration date, tax year, fuel type, price, vehicle category and, in some schemes, pollutants beyond CO₂. For a UK-registered car, check its DVLA record and V5C, then match those details to the current government schedule. For another country, use that jurisdiction’s official vehicle and scheme information.
What you need to check before looking up a CO₂ figure
There is no worldwide formula that turns a car’s CO₂ emissions into a tax bill or incentive. Governments decide which vehicles are covered, what dates and thresholds apply, and whether emissions are only one part of the calculation. Two cars with the same CO₂ rating can therefore face different charges or incentives because they are registered in different places or fall under different rules.

First pin down the question you are trying to answer. “Does this car’s CO₂ affect its taxes?” could mean the charge paid when it is first registered, recurring road or circulation tax, tax on a company car, or a purchase rebate or surcharge. Each may use different rules. An answer about the first-registration charge is not automatically an answer about annual tax or a buyer incentive.

- Exact charge or scheme: identify whether you mean a first-registration charge, annual vehicle tax, company-car tax, rebate, surcharge or another benefit.
- Vehicle identity and dates: note the registration number, first-registration date and, where rules ask for it, the date the vehicle first entered service.
- Vehicle category and powertrain: confirm whether it is treated as a car, its fuel or power source, and any applicable tax class.
- Other inputs: check whether the rule also uses list price, other pollutants, vehicle use or a registration-window condition.
These details keep you from applying a current threshold to a vehicle governed by an older registration cohort, or treating a CO₂ value as if it were the whole calculation.

How to check a UK-registered car
For a UK car, use the record for the individual vehicle and the schedule that applies to its registration date. The DVLA vehicle enquiry service can return recorded details from the registration number, including CO₂ emissions, fuel type, first-registration date and vehicle-tax information. Check the V5C logbook as well: for the relevant UK tax determination, the approved CO₂ figure on the vehicle’s registration certificate is the decisive figure, not a generic value for a similar model.
- Write down the precise question. Decide whether you are checking first-licence vehicle tax, the next licence, company-car tax or an incentive. Do not assume one result covers the others.
- Look up the car on DVLA’s vehicle enquiry service. Enter the registration number and note the displayed CO₂ figure, fuel type and first-registration date. Keep the result with the date you checked it.
- Verify the CO₂ value on the V5C. Compare the vehicle-specific approved figure with the online record. If the figures differ, do not substitute a manufacturer’s advertised figure or a database result; ask the registration or tax authority how to resolve the vehicle record.
- Choose the correct official schedule. Match the car’s registration date and the tax or licence period to the government table. Check whether the relevant rate is a first-licence rate or a later standard rate.
- Check additional rules in the same guidance. Look for fuel-specific treatment, tax class, price-based supplements, exemptions and any separate conditions that could change the amount.
- Confirm the result with the government service or authority. If an official calculator or tax-status result is available for the question, use it alongside the schedule. Save the schedule’s effective date and the vehicle details used.
The VCA emissions tool is useful for researching and comparing new cars and used cars first registered on or after 1 March 2001. It can show emissions and tax information by make, model and registration date, but it describes its database as a guide for first-registration tax. For the individual car’s determination, the V5C figure takes precedence. HMRC’s Employment Income Manual likewise says that for cars first registered in the UK from 1 March 2001, the approved CO₂ figure is shown on the new vehicle registration certificate (V5C), and identifies the V5C value as definitive for that particular car.
Which UK tax schedule applies?
Registration cohort matters. A car first registered on or after 1 April 2017 uses a different first-licence structure from cars in earlier cohorts. For a relevant car, the first-licence rate is linked to its CO₂ band; later licences generally use the standard rate, subject to applicable exceptions and supplements. Always use the schedule for the relevant tax year rather than carrying a previous year’s amount forward.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s April 2026 V149 schedule gives these examples for 2026–27 first-licence rates for most listed car types:
| Recorded CO₂ emissions | 2026–27 first-licence example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 0 g/km | £10 | Most listed car types in the April 2026 V149 schedule; certain diesel cars have a separate higher-rate column. |
| Above 255 g/km | £5,690 | Most listed car types in the April 2026 V149 schedule; certain diesel cars have a separate higher-rate column. |
These are examples from a dated schedule, not a universal UK rate or a promise of what a particular vehicle will cost. The correct amount depends on the car’s cohort and the applicable entries and exceptions. Check the live government schedule before registering a car or budgeting for a purchase.
Do not assume a zero-emission car is automatically free of vehicle tax. GOV.UK says the relevant change took effect on 1 April 2025 and provides 2026–27 rates by registration cohort. Its guidance also describes an expensive-car supplement for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025 with a list price above £50,000. Petrol and diesel supplement thresholds differ. The list-price and registration conditions matter alongside the emissions label, so check the current guidance for the exact car.

How to verify the emissions value for the exact car
A model name or engine description is not always enough to identify the approved emissions value used for a tax decision. Equipment, variant and certified specification can matter. A general model database or manufacturer figure may be useful for comparison, but it can differ from the value recorded for a specific registered vehicle.
- Use the registration certificate for the vehicle-specific tax figure. In the UK, the V5C’s approved CO₂ value is the operative figure for first-registration tax. HMRC’s guidance gives that figure priority over a general database or manufacturer value for the individual car.
- Use databases for research, not as a replacement record. VCA’s make/model search helps compare available vehicles and registration-date categories, but the agency describes it as a guide for first-registration tax.
- Resolve discrepancies before relying on a result. If DVLA, the V5C and a general database do not agree, keep a record of what each shows and contact the registration or tax authority. Do not choose the lowest or newest-looking number without confirmation.
- Keep the measurement context attached to the number. Record the units as g/km and make clear that you are using the approved value in the vehicle record, not a fuel-economy estimate or a figure for a different trim.
This distinction is particularly important when comparing vehicles before purchase. A model database can help narrow down likely variants, but it cannot establish the tax figure for an already registered car as reliably as the official vehicle-specific record.
Why emissions do not always determine an incentive
Incentive schemes can assess a vehicle differently from a tax schedule. Some use CO₂ thresholds; others include pollutants, eligibility dates, vehicle categories or technical calculations. Check the scheme’s conditions in addition to the emissions record, and confirm that the scheme is open for the vehicle’s registration period.

Singapore: the VES uses more than CO₂
For cars registered from 1 January 2026 through 31 December 2027, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority Vehicular Emissions Scheme considers CO₂ along with hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. The worst-performing pollutant determines the vehicle’s band and the applicable rebate or surcharge. For electric and plug-in hybrid cars, the LTA applies an emissions factor to electricity consumption. A CO₂-only comparison therefore cannot establish a vehicle’s VES outcome.
For a Singapore car, identify the vehicle’s official scheme rating and applicable registration window rather than trying to infer the band from a CO₂ figure alone. The registration dates are part of the stated scheme period; do not carry its terms over to a different registration window without checking the current LTA rules.

France: a dated CO₂ tax threshold
France’s Ministry for Ecological Transition states that the CO₂ tax trigger is lowered to 108 g CO₂/km from 1 January 2026, with the maximum amount reached at 192 g CO₂/km or more. Those figures describe the stated national rule for that date, not the exact amount due for every vehicle at or above the trigger. Use the official French schedule and check the vehicle’s circumstances, including any applicable exemption or other qualification, before estimating a charge.

Compare cars or jurisdictions on the same basis
When evaluating two vehicles or comparing two places, line up the attributes that the relevant rules actually use. A raw comparison of CO₂ values can be misleading if one car is in a different registration cohort, one figure comes from a generic model listing, or one scheme also scores other pollutants.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Official emissions value | The certified CO₂ figure for each exact vehicle, including units and source record. | A general model figure may not match the registered vehicle’s approved value. |
| Registration cohort and tax year | First-registration date and the effective period of the schedule. | Historic and new registrations can fall under different rules, and rates can change annually. |
| Charge type | First-registration charge, annual tax, company-car tax or incentive. | A vehicle can be assessed differently for distinct taxes or schemes. |
| Fuel or powertrain | Petrol, diesel, zero-emission, plug-in hybrid or other classification used by the authority. | Schedules may have separate treatment, such as a diesel rate column or a specific emissions calculation. |
| Price and vehicle category | List price and the official category or tax class, if requested. | Price thresholds and vehicle classifications can add conditions beyond emissions. |
| Additional criteria | Other pollutants, vehicle use, registration window and scheme-specific conditions. | Some incentives use multiple inputs; Singapore’s VES is one example. |
Use the same kind of figure for both cars and the official schedule for each jurisdiction. If one jurisdiction taxes a one-time first registration and another applies a recurring annual charge, present those as different costs rather than implying they are directly interchangeable.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with the emissions figure instead of the jurisdiction. First establish where the vehicle is registered and which authority’s rules apply.
- Mixing different tax questions. A first-licence rate does not by itself answer the annual, company-car or incentive question. Open the guidance for the specific charge.
- Using a current band for an older car. Match the car’s first-registration date to the rules for its cohort, then verify the tax year.
- Treating zero emissions as automatic exemption. UK vehicle-tax treatment changed from 1 April 2025, and a qualifying expensive zero-emission car registered from that date may be subject to a supplement.
- Assuming a CO₂-only result covers every scheme. Singapore’s 2026–27 VES band depends on the worst-performing result across several pollutants, with an electricity-consumption factor for electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
- Taking a manufacturer or model-database value as the final figure. For a UK car’s first-registration tax figure, use the vehicle-specific V5C record and ask the authority about discrepancies.
- Quoting an old amount without its period. Keep the tax year and effective schedule date beside any rate; a past schedule is not a current quote.
What to keep with your result
Save the evidence needed to reproduce the check, especially if you are buying a vehicle or checking a charge that will recur. A simple record prevents a band or amount from becoming detached from the assumptions that produced it.
- Country and, where relevant, region of registration.
- Registration number and first-registration date.
- CO₂ value, units, fuel type and the vehicle-specific record used.
- The exact tax or incentive being checked and any other inputs required by its rules.
- The official schedule or scheme period, including the date you checked it.
- The calculation or confirmation returned by the relevant government service or authority.
If you cannot establish which schedule applies, or if the vehicle record and certificate conflict, ask the registration or tax authority to confirm the vehicle-specific treatment before relying on an estimated amount. An emissions lookup supplies a recorded fact; the relevant current rule explains its financial effect.
