The iPhone 16 charges through its USB-C port. Use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable with your car’s USB-C port, a compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable with an older USB-A port, or a USB-C Power Delivery car charger in the vehicle’s 12V socket. For one phone, a 20W–30W USB-C PD car charger is usually the most dependable setup when the built-in port is missing or too slow.
What you need
| Car connection | What to use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C port | USB-C-to-USB-C cable | Simple wired charging; speed depends on the vehicle port |
| USB-A port | Compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable | Works, but the older port may charge more slowly |
| 12V accessory socket | USB-C PD car charger and USB-C cable | Usually the best upgrade when built-in ports are weak or absent |
| Wireless charging pad | Compatible MagSafe, Qi2, or Qi charger | Convenient, but alignment and heat affect performance |
| Magnetic mount | Powered MagSafe or Qi2 charger | Confirm that the mount actually charges; some only hold the phone |
The iPhone 16 includes a 1-meter USB-C Charge Cable. Its USB-C connector supports charging, DisplayPort, and USB 2 data speeds, but the included cable is primarily relevant here as a charging cable. Apple’s USB-C and charging guidance also confirms that an iPhone 15 or later can connect to a car’s USB-A connector with a compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable.

How to charge through your car’s USB port
- Identify the port. A USB-C port is small and oval-shaped. A USB-A port is larger and rectangular. If the car has only a round 12V or cigarette-lighter socket, you need a separate car charger.
- Choose the matching cable. Use USB-C-to-USB-C for a USB-C car port, or USB-C-to-USB-A for a USB-A car port. The USB-C end connects to the iPhone 16.
- Connect the cable to the vehicle, then to the iPhone. Push both connectors fully into place. A charging indicator should appear in the iPhone’s battery icon.
- Turn the vehicle on or select accessory mode. Some cars power their USB ports only when the ignition is in accessory or on mode. Check the owner’s manual rather than assuming the port remains powered while parked.
- Secure the cable before driving. Keep it away from pedals, the steering wheel, gear selector, airbags, and places where it can be pinched.
Use a compliant cable in good condition. Apple warns that noncompliant USB-C accessories and cables may not work as expected.
How to use a 12V USB-C car charger
If your car lacks a useful USB port, plug a reputable USB-C Power Delivery (PD) car charger into the 12V accessory socket, then connect the iPhone 16 with a USB-C cable. PD allows the charger and phone to negotiate an appropriate power level; the phone does not automatically draw the charger’s entire advertised wattage.

- 20W: Enough for one iPhone and meets Apple’s stated wired fast-charge threshold.
- 30W: The practical sweet spot for one iPhone, with some headroom.
- 45W–70W: Useful when charging an iPhone and another device, provided the charger explains how output is divided.
- 100W or more: Usually unnecessary for an iPhone alone; consider it mainly for laptops or several devices.
For a straightforward one-phone setup, a 30W USB-C car charger is the kind of product to look for. A compliant 20W–30W single-port model is generally more relevant than choosing the largest number on the package.
Multiport chargers can be useful for families or passengers, but inspect the per-port power table. A charger may advertise a high total output while supplying substantially less to the iPhone when other ports are occupied. For example, higher-output options such as the UGREEN car-charger range are most useful when you understand their output allocation rather than relying on the total wattage alone.
USB-C versus USB-A in the car
USB-C
USB-C is reversible and is usually the easiest route to USB Power Delivery in newer vehicles and aftermarket chargers. Use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, but remember that a physically USB-C port does not guarantee high-power charging; the vehicle’s specifications determine its output.
USB-A
USB-A remains common in older cars. Use a cable with USB-A on the car end and USB-C on the iPhone end. It can charge an iPhone 16, but the port may provide only enough power for basic charging. Navigation, streaming, hotspot use, cellular data, and a bright screen can consume power faster than a weak USB-A port supplies it.

Do not buy a USB-C-to-USB-C cable for a car that has only USB-A unless you also have a suitable adapter. An old Lightning cable cannot plug directly into the iPhone 16 because the phone uses USB-C.
Can you charge an iPhone 16 wirelessly in a car?
Yes. Possible setups include a vehicle’s built-in wireless pad, a powered MagSafe car charger, a Qi2-compatible magnetic charger, or a standard Qi pad. Wireless charging is best when cable-free mounting matters more than maximum consistency.
Apple lists the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus at up to 25W with MagSafe when paired with a 30W-or-higher adapter, up to 15W with Qi2, and up to 7.5W with standard Qi. Those are capability figures, not a promise that every vehicle pad or mount will deliver those speeds. The charger, adapter, alignment, case, temperature, and vehicle design all matter.

Wireless charging can generate more heat than wired charging, especially in direct sun or while navigation is running. A thick or poorly aligned case can also reduce performance. If the phone becomes hot or its battery percentage falls during a long drive, wired charging is usually the better fallback.
How fast will an iPhone 16 charge in a car?
Apple says the iPhone 16 can reach up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter and a USB-C charging cable, according to its iPhone 16 specifications. Treat that as a conditional Apple claim, not a guaranteed result in every vehicle.
Actual charging depends on the car’s USB port or 12V socket, the charger’s PD implementation, the cable, battery level, temperature, navigation and streaming use, screen brightness, cellular reception, and whether another device is sharing the charger. A 65W or 100W charger is safe when it complies with applicable USB-C and USB PD standards, but its higher rating does not necessarily charge the iPhone faster than a suitable 20W or 30W charger.

Why your iPhone 16 is charging slowly or not at all
It says it is charging, but the percentage keeps falling
- Stop unnecessary navigation, streaming, hotspot use, or other power-hungry activity.
- Try another cable.
- Move from the built-in port to a USB-C PD charger in the 12V socket.
- Disconnect other devices from a multiport charger.
- Let the phone cool and keep it out of direct sunlight.
These steps address common causes, but the symptom does not identify one guaranteed fault.

Nothing happens when you plug it in
- Put the car in accessory or on mode.
- Check whether the vehicle has disabled the port in its settings.
- Reconnect both ends firmly.
- Test the cable with another power source.
- Check whether the 12V socket’s fuse has blown.
- Inspect the iPhone’s USB-C port for debris or moisture; do not force the connector.
- Try a reputable, compliant charger and cable.
Best setup for different drivers
- Cheapest: Use the existing USB port with the correct cable. A USB-C port needs USB-C-to-USB-C; a USB-A port needs USB-C-to-USB-A.
- Best for most cars: Use a 20W–30W USB-C PD charger in the 12V socket. This is particularly useful when the built-in port is weak or inconveniently located.
- Multiple devices: Choose a multiport charger with clear per-port output figures. Total wattage alone is not enough.
- Cable-free: Choose a powered MagSafe or Qi2 charger and mount, then check fit, case compatibility, heat, and the required adapter.
A basic compliant cable is sufficient for the iPhone 16’s stated wired fast-charge requirement; paying extra for an extremely high-wattage cable solely for this phone is usually unnecessary. If you want an Apple-branded option, Apple’s charging-essentials collection lists compatible USB-C cables and accessories. Prices and availability can change by region and over time.
Safety and placement
Set up the cable, charger, and phone mount before moving. Never route the cable across pedals, in front of an airbag, around the steering wheel, or where it can obstruct controls. Avoid leaving the iPhone in a hot parked car or direct sunlight. Keep connectors dry and stop using a cable that is frayed, bent, or intermittently disconnecting.
Leaving the phone connected during a trip is normal, but heat can reduce charging performance. If the phone is hot, move it out of sunlight, remove a heat-trapping case if appropriate, reduce demanding use, or switch from wireless to wired charging.

Can I charge an iPhone 16 from a USB-A car port?
Yes. Use a compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable. The car’s USB-A port may charge more slowly than a USB-C PD connection.

Do I need a 20W charger for my iPhone 16?
A 20W-or-higher adapter is Apple’s stated requirement for its conditional claim of up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes. A lower-power port may still charge the phone, but more slowly.
Is a 100W car charger too powerful for an iPhone 16?
Not when it is a compliant USB-C charger. The wattage is the charger’s available maximum, not an amount forced into the phone. Higher wattage does not necessarily improve iPhone charging speed.
Why does my iPhone lose battery while charging in the car?
The port may be supplying little power, or navigation, streaming, hotspot use, heat, a damaged cable, or power sharing may be consuming more energy than the charger provides.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line
Match the cable to the car’s port. Use USB-C-to-USB-C for USB-C, USB-C-to-USB-A for USB-A, or add a 20W–30W USB-C PD charger to a 12V socket. Choose MagSafe or Qi2 when convenience matters most, and switch to wired charging when heat or slow charging becomes a problem.
