The safest way to charge and store an electric motorcycle is to follow the owner’s manual for its exact make, model, model year and market. Connector types, temperature limits, charge targets, rain guidance and storage routines differ between motorcycles, so advice for one bike should not be treated as a universal lithium-ion rule.

For everyday use, use charging equipment the manufacturer approves and follow its instructions for when and how long to charge. For storage longer than a few weeks, check the manual’s storage procedure rather than leaving the battery at an arbitrary percentage. The examples below show how specific manufacturers’ instructions differ.

Start with the manual for your motorcycle

Before choosing a charger or setting a charging routine, identify your motorcycle’s exact model, model year and region. Then find the corresponding owner’s manual and look for its sections on charging, battery care, storage and safety. LiveWire organizes its manual resources by model and year; its resource page is the appropriate starting point for LiveWire owners. A manual for a different model year or market may specify different equipment or procedures.

Keep the manual’s instructions ahead of general advice, including the examples in this guide. A connector that fits one motorcycle may not fit another, and a charge percentage or temperature limit published for one model does not establish a safe limit for all electric motorcycles. Even within a manufacturer’s range, charging hardware and instructions may vary by model and market.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.

When checking the manual, look beyond the charging-inlet shape. Confirm whether the motorcycle has an onboard charger, what external equipment it supports, and whether there are restrictions on charging in particular temperatures or weather. A plug that physically connects is not, by itself, proof that the equipment or charging method is approved.

  • Confirm the motorcycle’s charging inlet and the connector type specified for your market.
  • Check which charger or charging accessories the manufacturer approves.
  • Look up temperature restrictions and any instructions for charging outdoors or in wet weather.
  • Use the manual’s own routine and seasonal-storage guidance; do not assume they are identical.

How often should you charge?

There is no single charging schedule for every electric motorcycle. Daily charging is permitted for LiveWire motorcycles: LiveWire’s FAQ states, “Yes. LiveWire motorcycles can be charged every day,” and says riders can charge multiple times per day. That is LiveWire guidance, not a universal instruction for other makes.

The 2020 Zero SR/F owner manual describes a different consideration for riders who routinely use only part of the battery pack: avoid unnecessary charging to 100%, particularly in hot climates, so the bike does not spend extra time parked at a high state of charge. For an infrequently used SR/F, the manual says charging shortly before a ride is preferable to charging immediately after a ride and then leaving the motorcycle at a high state of charge for days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are model-specific examples, not conflicting universal rules. Apply the recommendation in your own manual, taking account of how often you ride and whether the bike will be used soon or stored. Do not avoid a charge needed for a planned ride simply because another manufacturer recommends minimizing time at a high state of charge for a different use pattern.

For everyday riding, distinguish a regular charging opportunity from putting the motorcycle away for an extended period. LiveWire’s daily-charging guidance answers whether its motorcycles may be charged every day; the Zero SR/F guidance addresses reducing unnecessary time at a high state of charge in particular use patterns. Neither example establishes one ideal daily percentage for every electric motorcycle.

Specific cautions in the 2020 Zero SR/F manual

The cited 2020 SR/F manual says to charge the pack within 24 hours after it has been fully discharged. If state of charge is below 30%, it recommends charging to at least 60% and disconnecting; it also warns against prolonged storage below 30%. Those thresholds and timing apply to the 2020 SR/F guidance cited here. They should not be substituted for another motorcycle’s manual.

The manual’s instructions distinguish a fully discharged pack from one that is simply below 30%, and distinguish short-term use from prolonged storage. If the bike is an SR/F covered by that manual, follow the specific action that applies rather than treating the numbers as a general lithium-ion rule. Owners of other models should check their own manuals for low-charge warnings and what to do after a full discharge.

How to choose compatible charging equipment

Compatibility depends on more than whether a cable seems to fit. Check the motorcycle’s connector and regional configuration, the onboard charging equipment, the power available from the outlet or station, and any manufacturer restrictions. A cable or adapter does not by itself increase the motorcycle’s charging speed; the vehicle and power source must both support the charging level.

Use these checks before buying or borrowing equipment:

  1. Match connector and region. Confirm the connector specified for the motorcycle’s market, not just the name used in a product listing.
  2. Confirm the charging level supported. Check what the motorcycle’s onboard charger and charging system accept. A faster station cannot make a motorcycle charge faster than its own supported setup allows.
  3. Check the supply. The outlet, EVSE or station and available power affect charging time. Installation and supply voltage or current may matter too.
  4. Verify approval and restrictions. Follow the manufacturer’s equipment guidance and any restrictions for accessories or adapters.
Manufacturer example Connector or charging setup Published charging information What the figure applies to
Zero Motorcycles The 2020 SR/F manual specifies IEC 62196 Type 1 (J1772) for North American motorcycles and Type 2 for EU motorcycles. Charge time depends on the connected cable, installed equipment and available power. 2020 SR/F, with connector varying by region; not a specification for every Zero model or electric motorcycle.
LiveWire The S2 Alpinista can use a compatible charging station or its included cord with a standard household outlet, according to LiveWire’s FAQ. LiveWire lists Level 1 charging from 0% to 100% in 8.4 hours and Level 2 charging to 80% in 78 minutes. S2 Alpinista manufacturer-published figures. They are not guaranteed times for other models, outlets, stations, temperatures or supply conditions.
Energica Energica describes onboard AC Level 2 charging and CCS Combo Level 3 DC fast charging on its platform. The company displays a CCS session reaching 0–80% in under 40 minutes. A manufacturer-displayed example on Energica’s technology page, not a universal charging-time promise.

Before buying or borrowing a cable or EVSE, verify the exact motorcycle’s connector, market version and permitted charging options in its manual. For the 2020 SR/F, the manual identifies J1772 in North America and Type 2 in the EU; do not infer compatibility for a different model or region from that fact. Installation, supply voltage and available current also affect charging time.

A J1772 cable or EVSE may be a relevant option for a North American owner whose particular motorcycle supports it, but it is not a default purchase for every rider. Confirm compatibility for the exact model and region before purchasing. Likewise, the word “Level 2” or “fast charging” does not settle whether the connection fits or whether the motorcycle accepts that level.

Published time estimates need context. LiveWire’s S2 Alpinista figures distinguish Level 1 charging to 100% from Level 2 charging to 80%; those are different endpoints as well as different charging levels. Energica’s under-40-minute figure is a displayed CCS session. Neither figure guarantees the same result on another motorcycle or at every station.

Charge rate can vary with conditions as well as hardware. LiveWire’s manufacturer disclosure says, “Charging rate varies based on output of the charge unit and ambient/vehicle temperature.” That is why a published estimate should be treated as a model-specific example, not a promise for every power source or day. Energica says its battery management system monitors each of 84 cells and optimizes charge rate, thermal management and longevity on its platform; that description does not replace compatibility checks or the instructions for another brand.

Charging temperature and safe setup

Temperature limits are model-specific. The 2020 Zero SR/F manual says that its power pack will not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 122°F (50°C). It separately says the pack should not be used outside -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). These are SR/F-specific limits, not general operating or charging limits for electric motorcycles.

The same manual says a pack above its maximum charging temperature will not accept a charge until it cools, and warns that charging at high temperature can shorten pack life. If charging is unavailable after a hot ride or in hot surroundings, follow the manual’s instructions and allow the pack to cool as directed; do not try to bypass a temperature safeguard. The separate “use” range and charging range are not interchangeable: the manual gives different limits for those conditions.

Zero’s 2020 SR/F manual also instructs owners to charge in a well-ventilated place away from combustible materials and to use the Zero charger or approved Zero accessory chargers. LiveWire notes that charge rate varies with charging-unit output and ambient or vehicle temperature. Its statement describes variables affecting charge rate; it does not provide one fixed time for every condition.

Before starting a session, set up the equipment according to the manual and the charger’s instructions. In particular, observe any direction about ventilation, combustible materials, approved equipment and temperature. If the motorcycle will not accept a charge, temperature may be relevant for a model whose manual identifies temperature-related charging limits; use the model’s troubleshooting procedure instead of attempting to defeat a safeguard.

Rain and outdoor charging

Manufacturer instructions differ on rain. LiveWire says its motorcycles can be charged in rain because the vehicle inlet is weather resistant, but instructs owners using EVSE equipment to protect the outlet end from weather. The cited 2020 Zero SR/F manual says to avoid charging in rain. Follow the instruction for your exact model rather than assuming that weather resistance at the motorcycle inlet makes every part of an outdoor charging setup safe in wet conditions.

This difference matters because the motorcycle inlet is only one part of the setup. LiveWire’s advice specifically includes protection for the supply-side outlet when using EVSE equipment. Zero’s cited manual gives a more restrictive instruction for the 2020 SR/F. If the manual for your motorcycle does not match either example, use its directions rather than extrapolating from another brand.

How to store an electric motorcycle battery

Routine charging and seasonal storage are separate situations. If the motorcycle will sit unused for more than 30 days, LiveWire recommends setting the battery between 30% and 70% state of charge, checking it once a week and charging if necessary so it stays above 30%. LiveWire’s page does not state a publication year for this recommendation and directs owners to their motorcycle manual for more information.

The 2020 Zero SR/F manual also cautions against prolonged storage at a high state of charge, especially at high temperatures, and against prolonged storage below 30%. It does not make the LiveWire 30–70% storage range a universal target. Use the model-specific storage procedure and account for the intended storage duration and temperature.

Storage situation Manufacturer guidance in the cited material Scope
More than 30 days Set state of charge to 30–70%; check weekly and charge if needed to keep it above 30%. LiveWire seasonal-storage recommendation; LiveWire page publication year not stated.
Prolonged storage Avoid prolonged storage at high state of charge, particularly in heat, and avoid prolonged storage below 30%. 2020 Zero SR/F owner manual; not a general storage window for all models.

These examples are useful comparison points, not a blended formula. For the storage plan that applies to your motorcycle, first consider how long it will be parked, then use the manufacturer’s stated charge window and check interval. Account for the storage environment as the manual directs; the cited Zero guidance specifically warns about prolonged high state of charge in heat. Do not substitute the LiveWire range for the Zero instructions or vice versa.

LiveWire’s seasonal-storage advice also covers the motorcycle, not just its battery. It recommends washing and drying the bike, checking and filling the cooling system, arming the security system and using a breathable cover. It warns that non-breathable plastic can promote condensation and corrosion. Check the relevant manual for any model-specific preparation steps before leaving a motorcycle unused.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A breathable whole-motorcycle cover is a practical storage consideration because LiveWire recommends breathable cover material for seasonal storage. That does not make a cover a substitute for preparing the motorcycle or checking its state of charge. Follow the manual’s full storage procedure, including any checks or service steps that apply to your model.

What affects battery aging?

The 2020 Zero SR/F manual says lithium-ion pack aging is related to both usage cycles and calendar time. It also warns that prolonged storage at a high state of charge—especially when hot—can accelerate aging. These points explain why storage habits and temperature matter, but they do not provide a lifespan prediction for a particular rider or establish a precise aging rate.

In practical terms, do not treat a single charging habit as a guarantee of a particular battery life. The cited Zero guidance supports avoiding unsuitable prolonged storage conditions; it does not quantify how many years or charge cycles a particular battery will last. Follow the applicable manual rather than relying on a universal percentage target or an unsupported lifespan estimate.

Energica says its battery management system monitors each of 84 cells and optimizes charge rate, thermal management and longevity. That is a description of Energica’s platform, not evidence that every electric motorcycle uses the same design. Battery management features do not make it safe to ignore the motorcycle’s charging instructions, use unapproved equipment or expose the pack to conditions the manual prohibits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither charging habits nor battery management eliminate ordinary motorcycle maintenance. LiveWire lists scheduled inspection or service needs including belt tension, transmission fluid, brake fluid and pads, and tires. Follow the maintenance schedule for the specific motorcycle as well as its battery-care instructions. Electric motorcycles may have fewer engine-related service needs, but they are not maintenance-free.

A practical charging and storage checklist

  1. Identify the exact motorcycle. Record its make, model, model year and market version; locate the matching owner’s manual.
  2. Verify the charging setup. Match the connector and charger to the motorcycle and region, and confirm the power source is suitable under the manual’s instructions.
  3. Check conditions before charging. Follow the model’s temperature limits and directions for ventilation, combustible materials and wet-weather charging.
  4. Use a routine that fits the manual. Do not transplant another manufacturer’s daily-charging or high-state-of-charge advice to your bike.
  5. Prepare separately for storage. If the motorcycle will be unused for weeks, follow its storage state-of-charge guidance and any specified check interval.
  6. Maintain the motorcycle as a whole. Keep up with scheduled inspections and consumables; battery care does not replace routine service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I charge my electric motorcycle?

There is no universal schedule. LiveWire says its motorcycles can be charged every day and multiple times per day. The 2020 Zero SR/F manual advises riders who use only part of the pack regularly to avoid unnecessary charging to 100%, particularly in hot climates. Follow the guidance for your exact make, model, year and region.

Can I leave my electric motorcycle plugged in?

Check your motorcycle’s manual for routine charging and storage instructions. The cited 2020 Zero SR/F manual cautions against leaving the bike for days at a high state of charge when it is not in use, especially in heat, and recommends charging shortly before a ride for infrequent use. That guidance is specific to that model and year, not a universal rule.

What charge level should I store an electric motorcycle battery at?

Use the storage percentage in your motorcycle’s manual. LiveWire recommends 30–70% for storage longer than 30 days, with weekly checks to keep the charge above 30%. The 2020 Zero SR/F manual separately warns against prolonged storage at high state of charge, especially when hot, and below 30%; do not treat LiveWire’s range as a target for every model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I charge an electric motorcycle in the rain?

It depends on the motorcycle. LiveWire says its bikes can be charged in rain because the inlet is weather resistant, while instructing EVSE users to protect the outlet end from weather. The cited 2020 Zero SR/F manual says to avoid charging in rain. Follow the applicable manual and protect the entire charging setup as directed.

Which charger works with my electric motorcycle?

Confirm the connector, regional configuration, onboard charging capability and manufacturer-approved equipment in the exact model’s manual. For example, the 2020 Zero SR/F manual specifies J1772 for North American bikes and Type 2 for EU bikes. That does not establish compatibility for another model or market, and a cable or adapter alone does not increase charging speed.

Can I charge the battery when it is very hot or cold?

Use the limits in the motorcycle’s manual. The 2020 Zero SR/F manual says its pack will not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 122°F (50°C), and gives a separate operating range. Those are SR/F-specific figures, not general limits. Do not bypass a temperature safeguard.

The Bottom Line

Use the owner’s manual for your exact electric motorcycle to choose charging equipment, set a routine and prepare for storage. The examples here show why: LiveWire permits daily charging and gives a 30–70% storage recommendation for periods over 30 days, while the 2020 Zero SR/F manual sets its own temperature limits and cautions. Confirm the model and region before acting on any connector, percentage or weather instruction.
