For convenient overnight charging, most luxury electric SUV owners should assess a compatible 240-volt Level 2 home setup. You may be able to start with the portable charger supplied with your vehicle, but charging speed and equipment requirements depend on the exact model year, connector, onboard AC charging limit, home electrical service, and local rules. Have a licensed electrician assess the installation before choosing equipment.

Can you charge a luxury electric SUV at home with a regular outlet?

Often, yes: some vehicles include portable charging equipment that can use a standard 120-volt outlet. This is Level 1 charging. It can suit light daily driving or serve as a fallback, but it is much slower than Level 2 and should not be treated as a fast way to refill a large SUV battery. Mercedes-Benz USA says its Level 1 charging can provide up to 1.9 kW and recommends it only when faster options are unavailable (Mercedes-Benz USA charging guidance).

Check your vehicle’s manual to confirm what equipment is supplied, which outlet it supports, and any restrictions. The outlet, circuit, charging equipment, and vehicle all affect the result; do not assume that a portable unit can be used with any outlet or extension cord.

What home charger should you choose?

For regular home charging, compare compatible Level 2 options rather than selecting a charger by brand or advertised maximum output alone. Level 2 uses 240-volt AC. The SUV’s onboard charger, the EVSE (the equipment that safely supplies power to the car), and the electrical circuit all limit the charging power you can actually use.

ChargePoint HomeFlex Level 2 EV Fast Charger, J1772, Smart, Hardwired, 50A
  • Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
  • Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
  • Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
  • Vehicle compatibility: Verify the connector for your exact model year and whether an adapter is required.
  • Power: Match the EVSE’s output to the vehicle’s maximum onboard AC charging rate and the circuit’s capacity. A higher-rated unit cannot make a vehicle accept more power than its onboard system allows.
  • Placement and cable reach: Choose a location and cable length that work for your parking position without creating a trip hazard or requiring an unsuitable extension.
  • Portable or fixed installation: Decide whether a plug-in unit using a suitable 240-volt outlet meets your needs or whether you want a permanently mounted wallbox. A dedicated circuit and compliant installation may be required.
  • Home readiness: Have an electrician assess the panel, proposed circuit, route from the panel, and applicable permitting and code requirements before settling on equipment.

What BMW’s published power figure means

BMW says its Flexible Fast Charger (up to model year 2026) and its NACS Multifunction Charger for most 2027 models can reach 9.6 kW with the correct adapter and a suitable 240-volt outlet; BMW says its Wallbox operates at the same speed under those conditions. BMW specifies that the maximum 9.6 kW requires the correct NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 adapter on a 240-volt outlet (BMW home-charging FAQ). This is BMW-specific guidance, not a universal figure for luxury electric SUVs or home chargers.

What does home charger installation cost?

Audi USA publishes a typical home installation range of $799–$1,999, accessed in 2026, and says the cost varies with the home’s electrical setup (Audi home-charging guidance). Treat this as Audi’s estimate, not a quote for your property, a nationwide average, or a guarantee that charger hardware is included. The published range does not establish the purchase price of an EVSE or any current local incentives.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Ask a licensed electrician for a properly scoped quote. The work may differ based on electrical service capacity, the distance and route between the panel and charging location, circuit requirements, permitting, and local building code. Audi advises consulting a qualified electrician and following local codes. Audi and BMW identify Qmerit as an installation-service partner, but availability and terms can vary; confirm current service in your area directly with the provider.

How do you estimate the electricity cost?

There is no meaningful universal cost per charge or monthly bill without your SUV’s energy use and your utility’s tariff. For a basic estimate, multiply the electricity used for charging in kilowatt-hours (kWh) by your price per kWh. Use your utility’s current residential rate and check whether an off-peak or time-of-use plan applies. Actual electricity drawn at the meter may be higher than energy delivered to the battery because charging is not lossless; include losses only if you have a reliable figure for your vehicle and setup.

Installation checklist

  1. Identify the exact vehicle: Record the model year, connector, and maximum AC charging rate from the owner’s manual or automaker guidance.
  2. Choose a charging approach: Compare supplied portable equipment and Level 1 use with a compatible 240-volt Level 2 EVSE based on your driving and overnight charging needs.
  3. Arrange an electrical assessment: Ask a licensed electrician to evaluate the panel, circuit, charger location, cable route, permits, and local code requirements.
  4. Compare scoped quotes: Confirm what equipment and installation work each quote includes, and ask whether electrical upgrades or permits are needed.
  5. Install and operate as directed: Follow the vehicle and EVSE manuals, electrician’s instructions, and local requirements. Do not use a circuit or adapter unless it is approved for the equipment and installation.
  6. Check the running cost: Use your utility tariff and charging kWh to estimate electricity expense, including an applicable off-peak rate if your plan offers one.
