You can replace a Toyota key-fob battery at home, but the correct cell and opening method depend on the specific key. Check your Toyota owner’s manual or the code printed on the battery you remove before buying a replacement; Toyota manuals include examples using both CR2032 and CR2016 cells.
1. Confirm the right battery for your key
Do not assume every Toyota key fob uses the same battery. One Toyota owner’s manual example specifies a CR2032, while another specifies CR2016 for vehicles without a smart key system and CR2032 for vehicles with one. These are examples, not a complete Toyota-wide fitment list.

Before purchasing, check the battery code in the manual for your exact vehicle and key, or read the code on the original cell after opening the fob. Use a Toyota vehicle-specific owner’s manual for the applicable procedure. Buy a CR2032 battery only if your manual or removed cell confirms CR2032; do not substitute one cell type for another based on appearance.

Toyota’s manuals show different key designs and opening sequences, so treat the following as examples and follow the instructions for your own fob.

- Remove the cover or mechanical key as directed. Depending on the design, the manual may instruct you to remove the key cover or first take out the mechanical key.
- Open the fob carefully. If the manual calls for a small flathead screwdriver, protect its tip with a rag or tape as directed to reduce the risk of scratching or damaging the fob.
- Lift out the old battery. Use the screwdriver carefully, following the applicable manual’s instructions.
- Install the matching replacement cell. In the cited Toyota procedures, the “+” terminal faces up. Toyota’s manuals state: “Insert a new battery with the ‘+’ terminal facing up.”
- Reassemble the fob. Close the case and reinstall any cover or mechanical key, following the manual’s sequence.
3. Keep coin batteries and small parts away from children
Keep both new and removed batteries, along with other small parts, out of children’s reach. Toyota warns that small parts can cause choking if swallowed. A swallowed coin/button battery can cause severe chemical burns: if one is swallowed or put into the body, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
