On the touchscreen, start at Controls and open the driver-assistance settings section shown in your Tesla. Depending on the vehicle and manual version, it may be labeled Self-Driving or Autopilot. From there, change only the options your car actually displays—such as the speed basis, an available speed offset, or activation behavior. Tesla’s Model 3 manuals provide useful examples, but menu names and availability vary by vehicle, region, configuration, and software.
Find the settings on your Tesla
Open the vehicle’s touchscreen and select Controls. Look for the driver-assistance section, which may appear as Self-Driving or Autopilot. Open the owner manual in the vehicle’s Manual app when you need instructions for a particular control or want to confirm what a setting does on your configuration.

The paths below are examples from Tesla Model 3 manuals, not universal instructions for every Tesla. Tesla says feature availability can depend on region, model, trim, model year, configuration, Self-Driving hardware, and software. If a control or label described here is missing from your screen, do not assume that it is hidden in another menu: it may not be available on your vehicle, or your manual may use different labels.

- A newer Model 3 manual places an Autosteer option at Controls > Self-Driving > Autosteer (Beta). The instructions direct the owner to read and accept the prompt shown on screen.
- A 2024+ Model 3 manual uses Autopilot for the driver-assistance settings section.
- The Full Self-Driving (Supervised) instructions describe Controls > Self-Driving for the expanded visualization display option.
These differences are why the touchscreen and the manual available in your car are more reliable than instructions written for another model year or software version. A menu name in a video or guide may have been accurate for a different car when it was made, but it is not proof that your vehicle has the same control. Start with the section name and choices actually displayed in your car, then use that vehicle’s manual to interpret them.

Change how the car selects its set speed
In the cited Model 3 instructions, Set Speed lets you choose between Speed Limit and Current Speed. The option determines which speed basis is used when the relevant driver-assistance feature is engaged. The available choice and its on-screen description can vary by vehicle.
| Choice | What it uses | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Speed Limit | The speed limit the vehicle identifies, with a configurable offset in the cited Model 3 instructions. | Choose it if you want the set speed to be based on the detected limit, and check the displayed offset before relying on it. |
| Current Speed | The vehicle’s current speed at engagement. | Choose it if you prefer the set speed to begin from the speed you are already traveling. |
If Speed Limit is selected, the cited instructions describe two offset methods: Fixed or Percentage. A fixed offset is a set amount relative to the detected limit; a percentage offset is calculated as a proportion of that limit. Follow the values and explanation presented on your own touchscreen, since Tesla’s manuals do not establish one universal offset value or range.
Choose a speed basis deliberately
- Open Controls, then the Self-Driving or Autopilot section shown by your car.
- Open Set Speed if that control is available.
- Select Speed Limit or Current Speed, considering which basis you want when the system engages.
- If you selected Speed Limit, review the available offset type and its on-screen description before choosing Fixed or Percentage.
The two speed bases answer different questions. Speed Limit bases the selected speed on the limit the vehicle identifies; Current Speed bases it on how fast you are already traveling at engagement. A Fixed offset expresses an adjustment as an amount, while Percentage expresses it in relation to the identified limit. Those distinctions can help you choose an option, but they do not establish that the vehicle has correctly identified every road limit or that a selected speed is safe for present conditions.
Before using driver assistance, check the speed displayed by the car and decide whether it is appropriate for the road and conditions. If the identified limit or selected set speed does not look right, do not assume that the setting will correct itself. A preference for one speed basis is not a substitute for monitoring the vehicle.
Choose single- or double-click activation when offered
Some cited Model 3 configurations let the driver select Single Click or Double Click for the right scroll button’s activation behavior. Other configurations do not offer this setting, so it may not appear in your vehicle’s menu.
| Activation option | What the cited instructions establish | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Single Click | An available activation choice for the right scroll button. | Use the on-screen description to understand how a single press engages the available assistance feature on your configuration. |
| Double Click | Tesla says this is required when the driver wants Traffic-Aware Cruise Control independently of Autosteer. | Choose it if that independent use is your intended setup and your vehicle offers the setting. |
The useful comparison is not that one number of clicks is universally better. It is that activation behavior changes how the right scroll button is used, and the cited Tesla instructions specify a particular reason to choose Double Click: keeping Traffic-Aware Cruise Control available independently of Autosteer. If that is not your intended setup, read the on-screen explanation to understand the choice offered by your car rather than relying on the label alone.

Do not infer that Single Click or Double Click behaves identically across all Tesla vehicles. Read the prompt on the touchscreen and the matching vehicle-manual instructions before changing it. If the choice is absent, the cited manuals do not support assuming there is a way to enable it through another setting. A missing activation choice may simply mean your configuration does not offer that option.

Enable Autosteer where the vehicle offers it
In the cited newer Model 3 manual, the path is Controls > Self-Driving > Autosteer (Beta). Tesla’s instructions say to read and accept the displayed prompt. That specific menu path and label are a Model 3 manual example; use the equivalent instructions in your vehicle’s Manual app if your labels differ.
Do not treat the word “enable” as a promise that the feature will be usable in every situation or that enabling a preference changes the system’s limits. Follow the prompt your car presents and the manual that applies to it. If you do not see Autosteer (Beta), do not assume that the control is hidden under a different label: the name or feature may not apply to your vehicle.
Autosteer is described in the Model 3 manual as combining speed or following-distance control with lane keeping. The manual also identifies features such as Auto Lane Change and Navigate on Autosteer as available only on select vehicles. Seeing one Autosteer-related control does not establish that every related feature is available on your car. Availability depends on the vehicle and its configuration, so check for each option individually rather than inferring one feature from another.
Adjust Full Self-Driving (Supervised) visualization
The cited Full Self-Driving (Supervised) instructions describe a display option called Expanded Full Self-Driving Visualization. To use it, go to Controls > Self-Driving and enable that option if it appears. Then swipe the visualization handle to expand the display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis is a display adjustment: it changes how the visualization is shown. It does not change the driver’s responsibility, make the system autonomous, or establish that a driving feature is available. Do not confuse a larger or expanded visualization with a change to what the vehicle can do.

Tesla describes Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as attempting to follow a route and handle varied driving maneuvers. The manual nevertheless warns that, in rare cases, the system may not appropriately slow, stop, or resume at a stop sign or traffic light. The word “Supervised” matters: remain attentive and be ready to intervene rather than treating a route or visualization as a guarantee of what the car will do next.
Understand the Green Traffic Light Chime and intersection behavior
The cited Model 3 instructions describe a Green Traffic Light Chime option that can sound when a wait at a red light ends. The described instructions specify applicability in the United States and Canada. Availability elsewhere or on other configurations is not established by those instructions; check the control and manual shown in your vehicle. If you do not see the option, the manual examples do not establish that it can be added through another menu.
A chime is an alert, not permission to move without checking. Pay attention to the traffic light and surrounding road users, and make sure it is safe before proceeding. The chime’s described purpose does not change the driver’s responsibility to remain attentive.

Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control has a separate, important documented limitation: in the cited instructions, it does not turn the vehicle through an intersection. If you need to turn, you must steer. Tesla also places responsibility on the driver to ensure that the vehicle stops or accelerates safely. Do not confuse assistance with intersection controls for authority to make a turn, and do not assume the car will choose a safe action without your oversight.
What the settings cannot do
Changing a preference does not remove the limits or safety obligations of driver assistance. Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says: “It is your responsibility to stay alert, drive safely, and be in control of the vehicle at all times.” Keep attention on the road, check the vehicle’s behavior, and be ready to take over when needed.
For Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual gives this takeover instruction: “When you see this message, take over steering immediately.” Treat an instruction to take over as an immediate action, not as a prompt to explore settings or wait for the system to correct itself. Make any menu changes when safely parked, not while driving.

Settings are preferences for the controls your vehicle offers. They do not establish that the vehicle can recognize every road situation, stop or resume correctly every time, or safely complete a maneuver without supervision. Tesla’s documentation describes driver-assistance behavior and its limitations; the driver remains responsible for safe operation.

- The section has a different name: Look for Self-Driving or Autopilot under Controls, then consult the Manual app in the vehicle. Tesla’s cited Model 3 materials use different labels.
- An option is missing: Availability varies with region, model, trim, model year, configuration, Self-Driving hardware, and software. The cited materials do not establish that every vehicle has each setting.
- A menu path does not work: Treat a path from another manual as a version-specific example. Use the manual associated with your own vehicle and follow the labels displayed there.
- You are unsure what an option changes: Read its on-screen explanation before selecting it. Tesla’s manuals do not establish one universal set of values or behavior for every configuration.
- The system behaves unexpectedly while driving: Prioritize safe control of the vehicle. Do not troubleshoot through touchscreen menus while driving; intervene as needed and review the vehicle manual when stopped.
One practical way to resolve a mismatch is to identify the exact control you want to change, locate the corresponding section on the touchscreen, and compare the wording in the in-car manual. If the section, setting, or feature is not present, treat that absence as meaningful rather than repeatedly searching menus for a control that may not be offered on your vehicle.

The controls covered here are touchscreen preferences and display options. The instructions describe using the vehicle’s Controls menu and Manual app; they do not call for an accessory, repair tool, replacement part, or printed manual to change these settings. For a vehicle-specific explanation, the owner manual in the car is the relevant reference.
Before you use the changed setting
- Confirm the section and control. Make sure you are in the Self-Driving or Autopilot section actually shown by your vehicle.
- Read the on-screen wording. Use the description or prompt for the precise behavior available on your configuration.
- Check any related choice. If you select Speed Limit, review the available offset type; if you want Traffic-Aware Cruise Control independently of Autosteer, check whether Double Click is offered and required by your setup.
- Keep the car under your control. Before and during use, verify that the displayed speed and vehicle behavior are appropriate. Remain attentive and ready to intervene.
- Stop to troubleshoot. If a setting is missing or behavior differs from what you expected, consult the in-car manual when parked rather than navigating menus while driving.

What is the difference between a fixed and percentage speed offset?
A Fixed offset is a set amount relative to the detected speed limit; a Percentage offset is calculated as a proportion of that limit. Tesla’s cited instructions do not establish one universal offset value or range, so follow your vehicle’s on-screen description.
Should I choose single click or double click?
Some Model 3 configurations offer both choices for the right scroll button, and some do not offer an activation setting. Tesla says Double Click is required when the driver wants Traffic-Aware Cruise Control independently of Autosteer. Use the on-screen description for your vehicle.
Why is an Autopilot or Self-Driving setting missing?
Tesla says availability can depend on region, model, trim, model year, configuration, Self-Driving hardware, and software. A missing control may not be available on your car. Check the Manual app and the controls actually displayed rather than assuming another model’s path applies.

Will Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control turn the car through an intersection?
The cited Tesla instructions say it does not turn the vehicle through an intersection. If you need to turn, you must steer, and you remain responsible for ensuring the vehicle stops or accelerates safely.
Do I need an accessory or repair tool to change these settings?
No accessory or repair tool is identified for the touchscreen preferences described here. Use Controls and the owner manual available in your vehicle to review the options it offers.
The Bottom Line
Start at Controls and use the Self-Driving or Autopilot section your Tesla displays. Model 3 manuals show examples for set speed, offsets, activation behavior, Autosteer, and visualization, but options vary by vehicle, region, configuration, and software. Read the in-car manual and stay alert: changing a setting does not change your responsibility to control the vehicle.
