How to Buy a Used Tesla: Battery, Warranty, and Inspection Checklist

A practical U.S. checklist for evaluating a used Tesla by VIN, battery-health evidence, remaining warranty, recall status, and independent EV inspection.

Before buying a used Tesla, verify the exact car by VIN, confirm its remaining warranty in writing, assess battery condition using evidence suited to its model and year, and arrange an independent inspection by an EV-qualified technician. A displayed range estimate is not a battery-capacity test, and Tesla’s Certified Pre-Owned inspection is not a substitute for checking the specific vehicle.

This guide focuses on U.S. purchases. Warranty terms, transfer rules, and dealer requirements can vary by vehicle, contract, purchase date, and jurisdiction; use the warranty supplied with the car as the authority for its coverage.

Start with the exact car, not the listing headline

A used Tesla’s value and risk depend on its particular configuration and history. “Model 3,” “Long Range,” or a low odometer reading alone does not tell you which warranty applies, what equipment is present, or whether the car has had repairs. Build a record for the vehicle you are actually considering before comparing prices or making a deposit.

Record the vehicle’s identity and history

  • Write down the VIN, model year, model, trim, odometer reading, title status, and first delivery or purchase date, if available.
  • Ask whether it was privately owned, a Tesla Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle, a demonstration car, or used by a rental or fleet operator. Request documents supporting the answer rather than relying on a verbal description.
  • Request the vehicle history report and available service and repair invoices. Compare them with the title information and the seller’s account of the car’s past.
  • Confirm which configuration, equipment, and software features the specific car has. Equipment and feature availability can vary by vehicle, configuration, model year, and region.

A history report is useful but not complete proof of condition: it may omit events. Treat it as one source of evidence alongside records, the car itself, and an inspection.

Compare like with like

When assessing alternatives, compare the same model and trim with similar mileage where possible. Then account for remaining warranty, battery-health evidence, open recalls, title and accident history, documented repairs, inspection findings, charging equipment, features you actually need, and likely near-term work. A car with a lower asking price may require more immediate repairs or have less remaining coverage; the listing price by itself does not reveal those differences.

Make the comparison concrete. For each candidate, record the same details rather than relying on memory or comparing one car’s advertised range with another car’s warranty. A simple table can include VIN and trim, odometer, title status, delivery date, history-report findings, remaining Basic and Battery and Drive Unit coverage, battery-health information, open recalls, inspection results, and included cables or adapters. Mark items that are unknown instead of filling them in from assumptions.

Understand the warranty before you negotiate

Tesla’s current U.S. Vehicle Warranty page, accessed in 2026, lists general coverage limits, but the applicable terms depend on the vehicle and its warranty documents. Tesla says the warranty supplied with the vehicle is authoritative; an online general summary does not replace it. Ask for the document tied to the VIN and check the coverage shown in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty.

Coverage Tesla’s published U.S. limit What to verify for this vehicle
Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first Original delivery or purchase date, current odometer, and the warranty document’s coverage and exclusions
Battery and Drive Unit warranty 8 years and 100,000, 120,000, or 150,000 miles, depending on model and trim; the applicable time or mileage limit comes first. Tesla’s published terms include a minimum 70% battery-capacity retention during the covered period. The exact model- and trim-specific mileage limit, start date, remaining time and mileage, capacity-retention wording, and exclusions in the vehicle’s warranty
Tesla CPO additional Basic coverage If the original Basic coverage has ended, Tesla states that CPO vehicles receive an additional 1 year or 10,000 miles under the program’s stated terms. If original Basic coverage remains, its balance applies. Whether the car is actually sold under Tesla’s CPO program, what original coverage remains, and the specific CPO warranty supplied with the listing
Tesla CPO Battery and Drive Unit coverage The balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit warranty applies The original vehicle-specific warranty limits and remaining coverage; do not assume CPO status starts a new battery warranty

The figures above are Tesla’s stated program and warranty limits, not independent reliability statistics. They should not be treated as a promise that a particular vehicle will avoid repairs. For each applicable warranty, determine both the calendar time remaining and the mileage remaining: coverage ends when the first limit is reached. Confirm the start date from the records, not just the model year.

For example, a car can be below its mileage cap but close to the time limit, or have substantial time remaining but be near its mileage limit. Calculate both from the vehicle’s actual coverage start date and current odometer, then ask Tesla or the seller to resolve any discrepancy between the app, listing, and warranty document. Also read the coverage language for exclusions and the exact meaning of the battery-capacity provision; a headline summary is not enough to determine whether a repair is covered.

Confirm that ownership can transfer

Tesla states that the New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers to the new owner when the vehicle ownership transfer is completed through Tesla. Before paying, ask the seller to cooperate with the transfer and confirm what steps are needed for the VIN. After the sale, complete the transfer and check that the vehicle appears correctly in your Tesla account. Also make sure you receive the key cards or fobs included in the sale, can access the mobile app, and are no longer dependent on the prior owner’s account.

Do not treat a seller’s promise that “the warranty transfers automatically” as confirmation that the account and ownership handoff is complete. If the transfer cannot be completed or the vehicle’s app access is unclear, resolve that before relying on app-based features or warranty information. Keep confirmation of the transfer and copies of the warranty documents with your purchase records.

How to check battery health on a used Tesla

Battery condition matters, but one screen reading cannot answer every question. Ask the seller to show the battery-health information available in the car and determine whether that model and year support a dedicated evaluation. A range estimate is useful context, but it is not a standalone measurement of battery capacity: displayed range can reflect factors beyond a direct capacity test. Tesla’s documented health evaluation uses battery-management data and compares expected retention for the battery type, age, and usage.

Be precise about what evidence the seller is showing you. A displayed estimate, an owner’s estimate based on driving, and a completed battery-health evaluation are not interchangeable. Ask when any test was performed and whether the car meets the conditions for a valid test. If the car does not support the documented feature, absence of that menu should not be mistaken for proof of a bad battery; it means you need other vehicle-specific records and a qualified assessment.

Use the model-specific test where available

The 2017–2023 Model 3 Owner’s Manual documents a battery-health evaluation at Controls > Service > Battery Health for equipped cars. Its optional Battery Health Test requires AC charging, suitable conditions including a low battery state of charge, and no relevant active alerts. If the test is available and its prerequisites are met, it can take up to 24 hours. That makes it impractical to assume a seller can complete it during a brief viewing. Confirm the instructions in the manual for the exact car, and do not assume that every Tesla model or model year offers the same feature.

If the test has not been run, that fact alone does not establish a fault. It does mean you should not present a seller’s range estimate as if it were a completed battery-health result. Decide whether the available evidence is adequate for your purchase, or make a qualified inspection and further evaluation a condition of proceeding. Avoid promising yourself that a short test drive will settle battery capacity; it cannot replace the documented evaluation or inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask about faults and prior high-voltage repairs

Ask whether the car has shown battery, thermal-system, or charging alerts; whether its high-voltage battery or drive unit has been repaired or replaced; and whether there are invoices or service records for those events. Have unresolved alerts or concerns investigated by a qualified EV technician. Do not open the battery enclosure or attempt high-voltage diagnosis yourself. NHTSA advises that EV service should be performed by a qualified technician with specialized high-voltage training.

When reviewing an invoice, match it to the VIN and note the date, mileage, work performed, and whether a component was repaired or replaced. Ask the seller to explain any alert that appears during the viewing or test drive, and do not accept “it always does that” as a diagnosis. A warning may have more than one explanation; the right next step is assessment by a qualified technician, not guessing at severity or repair cost.

Check charging in a practical way

Where the sale setting allows, verify that the charging port opens and operates and that the vehicle can charge on AC power. If practical and safe to arrange, check DC fast-charging functionality as well. Confirm which charging cables and adapters are included, inspect them for damage, and establish whether they suit your intended home charging setup. There is no single included-equipment package established for every used vehicle, so get the seller’s list in writing rather than assuming particular cables or adapters come with the car.

  • 5. Tire tread depth gauge reads in 32nds Suitable for trucks, motorcycles, automobiles and any passenger vehicle

Check the charging equipment as part of the transaction rather than after delivery. A cable or adapter shown in a listing may not be included unless the seller confirms it. Make a note of what you need for your home setup and compare it with the items actually supplied. This is especially useful when comparing two similar cars: differences in included equipment can affect convenience and may require additional purchases, even when the vehicle itself is otherwise comparable.

What Tesla CPO status does—and does not—tell you

Tesla says its CPO vehicles receive a 119-point inspection and that listings include an AutoCheck history report. Its published CPO mechanical benchmarks include at least 5/32 inch of remaining tire tread and at least 6 mm of brake-pad thickness. These are Tesla program standards, not proof that every aspect of a particular vehicle is trouble-free or that it has no wear, cosmetic imperfections, or future repair needs.

Read the individual CPO listing and supplied warranty. Establish whether the car is being sold through Tesla’s program rather than relying on a third-party seller using “certified” informally. Distinguish any remaining original coverage from the additional CPO Basic coverage described in the warranty table. Tesla also cautions that CPO vehicles may be sold with open recalls requiring future repairs, so CPO status does not mean recall status is clear.

The inspection count and tread and brake figures are program criteria, not a universal guarantee of condition and not a substitute for the independent inspection you arrange. Ask to see the listing’s inspection and history information, then have your own inspector assess current wear and identify anything that needs attention. Tesla also notes that CPO cars can have normal age- and mileage-related wear and cosmetic imperfections. Look at the specific vehicle rather than assuming the label means showroom condition.

Use this pre-purchase inspection checklist

The FTC’s Used Car Rule guidance says buyers can ask for an independent mechanic inspection before purchase. For a Tesla, choose an inspector qualified to evaluate EVs and high-voltage systems. Tesla’s own CPO checks and service documentation can help identify areas to examine, but they do not replace an independent assessment of the car you plan to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arrange the inspection before finalizing the purchase, and agree with the seller on access to the car and records. Ask the inspector to provide written findings and identify anything that could not be assessed. For high-voltage concerns, use a technician with specialized training; do not attempt to inspect or remove high-voltage components yourself.

Records, title, and recalls

  • Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the title, listing, history report, and warranty documents.
  • Review available maintenance, collision, battery, drive-unit, and charging-system repair records. Ask for an explanation and supporting paperwork for gaps or discrepancies.
  • Check the VIN for open recalls with Tesla and NHTSA. Record any unresolved recall and ask who will arrange the repair and when.
  • Confirm the title status and investigate any reported accident or structural repair rather than assuming a history report is exhaustive.

Tesla specifically says CPO vehicles may be sold with open recalls, so look up recall status even if the seller presents a CPO listing or an inspection report. Ask whether an open recall has already been addressed and request documentation if the seller says it has. Resolve who will arrange outstanding work before purchase; do not treat a history report or CPO inspection as proof that the VIN has no open recall.

Exterior, underbody, and running gear

  • Inspect all tires for uneven wear, damage, and remaining tread. A tread-depth gauge can help you record the measurement, but it is not a substitute for an inspector’s assessment.
  • Have the brakes, steering, suspension, and wheel condition checked. Ask the inspector to document measurements and identify work that is needed now versus later.
  • Look for signs of structural repair and underbody damage, including evidence of an impact around the battery enclosure. Leave inspection of high-voltage components to qualified personnel; do not remove covers or handle high-voltage parts.
  • Check lights, body panels, glass, doors, and other visible equipment for damage or inconsistent repair quality.

A tire tread-depth gauge is a modest way to record tread and compare it with Tesla’s published CPO minimum of 5/32 inch, but the number alone cannot reveal uneven wear, tire damage, or the cause of a problem. Likewise, Tesla’s CPO brake-pad benchmark is 6 mm minimum thickness, not a guarantee that brakes on a particular car are in good condition today. Have the inspector document tread and pad measurements and assess the surrounding components.

Tesla service documentation includes a visual inspection of the high-voltage battery enclosure. That is a reason to ask an EV-qualified professional to consider underbody and enclosure condition, especially if there are signs of impact; it is not an invitation to remove covers yourself. Record visible scrapes, dents, or repairs for the technician to evaluate rather than making a high-voltage safety judgment from appearance alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cabin, controls, and road test

  • Operate the screens, controls, restraints, lights, windows, and the other features you expect to use. Note warning messages rather than assuming they are harmless.
  • Test HVAC operation and listen for abnormal noises while stationary and during the drive.
  • On a test drive, pay attention to pulling, vibration, braking behavior, unusual sounds, and any warning that appears. Ask the seller to explain concerns and have unresolved ones investigated before purchase.
  • Test charging-port operation and the charging functions you can reasonably check at the location, then confirm which cables and adapters are part of the sale.

Use the drive to check basic behavior, not to replace a mechanical inspection. Note whether the car pulls, vibrates, brakes unusually, makes unexpected noises, or displays warnings. Test the climate system and the controls and features that matter to you. If the seller restricts a reasonable test or inspection, ask why and consider whether the unanswered questions make the transaction too risky.

Ask the inspector for written findings, including defects, measurements, recommended repairs, and items they could not assess. A useful inspection separates urgent safety or functional issues from cosmetic wear and from future maintenance considerations, helping you decide whether to proceed, renegotiate, or walk away.

Make a decision from the evidence, not one number

There is no universal battery-health percentage established here as a pass-or-fail rule for buying a used Tesla. Tesla’s 70% capacity-retention language is a warranty term during the applicable covered period, not a general purchase recommendation for every vehicle outside or inside that warranty. Consider battery information alongside the warranty, alerts, repair history, charging behavior, and an EV-qualified inspection.

For each candidate, create a short comparison record with the same fields: VIN and configuration; title and history; warranty remaining by time and mileage; battery-health evidence and whether a model-specific test applies; recall status; inspection findings; included charging equipment; and estimated near-term work identified by the inspector. If a seller will not provide reasonable access to records, allow an independent inspection, or complete the ownership transfer, treat that as a transaction risk rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not invent a repair budget from a warning light or assume that a low asking price offsets an unresolved issue. Ask the inspector which items need immediate attention, which can be monitored, and what further diagnosis is needed. Use documented findings to compare likely near-term work across cars. The sources cited here do not establish one set of repair costs for every used Tesla, so obtain vehicle-specific estimates when the inspection identifies work.

Proceed only when the vehicle identity and terms are clear, the records and physical condition make sense together, and unresolved issues have an acceptable answer in writing. If an inspection finds a defect, use the written findings to ask for repair documentation, a price adjustment, or a repair before sale; if a material safety, title, warranty, or battery concern remains unclear, choosing another car is a valid outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check the battery health on a used Tesla?

Ask the seller to show the battery-health information available in that specific car, then check its owner’s manual for model- and year-specific instructions. The 2017–2023 Model 3 manual documents Controls > Service > Battery Health for equipped cars. Its optional test requires AC charging and suitable conditions, including low state of charge and no relevant active alerts, and can take up to 24 hours. A displayed range estimate is context, not a direct battery-capacity test.

Does a Tesla warranty transfer to a new owner?

Tesla says the New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers when ownership transfer is completed through Tesla. Confirm the vehicle-specific warranty document and coverage in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty, complete the transfer after the sale, and verify that the car appears in your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I inspect before buying a used Tesla?

Verify the VIN, title, history and repair records, warranty, and recall status. Have an independent EV-qualified technician assess tires, brakes, steering and suspension, charging operation, warning alerts, and signs of structural or underbody damage. Test cabin controls, HVAC, and road behavior, and leave high-voltage system inspection to a qualified professional.

How do I check whether a used Tesla has an open recall?

Check the VIN with Tesla and NHTSA, even if the car is being sold as Tesla CPO. Tesla says CPO vehicles may be sold with open recalls. Ask for documentation if the seller says a recall repair has already been completed, and agree who will arrange any outstanding repair.

Does Tesla CPO mean a used Tesla has no problems?

No. Tesla says its CPO cars receive a 119-point inspection and listings include an AutoCheck history report, but CPO vehicles may still have normal age- and mileage-related wear, cosmetic imperfections, and open recalls. Treat the program standards as useful information, not a substitute for an independent inspection of the specific car.

Is 70% battery capacity a good used-Tesla pass/fail threshold?

No universal used-car pass/fail percentage is established here. Tesla’s published 70% capacity-retention language is part of the applicable Battery and Drive Unit warranty during its covered period; it is not a general purchase recommendation. Consider the car’s model-specific battery evidence, warranty, service history, alerts, charging behavior, and inspection findings together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Buy the specific car that the documents and inspection support—not the one with the most reassuring range estimate or CPO label. Verify its VIN-specific warranty and recall status, confirm ownership transfer, and use an independent EV-qualified inspection to assess condition. If a material battery, title, safety, or warranty question remains unanswered, pause the purchase or choose another vehicle.
