Buy a used Street 500 in Japan by verifying that the specific motorcycle is registered as a Harley-Davidson XG500, inspecting its condition and records, confirming the seller can provide the transfer paperwork, and getting a written total price. Do not rely on the advertised cash price alone: Harley-Davidson Japan says its certified-used listing prices include consumption tax but exclude insurance, other taxes and miscellaneous expenses. Before riding, confirm the inspection certificate is valid and compulsory liability insurance covers the bike.

Start by confirming it is the right motorcycle

Harley-Davidson’s official service reference identifies the Street 500 as the XG500. Search Japanese listings under both “Street 500” and “XG500,” then verify the identity against the individual motorcycle’s registration documents and frame number. A model name in an advertisement is not enough to establish the registered model, year or market specification.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Ask the seller for the model year, frame number, mileage, Japanese registration status, asking price, service records and modification history before travelling to see the bike. Also ask about accident or frame repairs, falls, and whether the registration and transfer documents are available. Record the answers so you can compare them with the paperwork and the motorcycle itself.

Use the vehicle’s own documents and qualified service or parts information to confirm its configuration. Harley-Davidson’s service material includes regional specifications; for example, it gives an India-only 17-inch-front MRF Zapper tire detail. That is not a universal specification for Japanese Street 500s. Do not order replacement parts or judge fitment from a generic page or a specification for another market.

When a listing uses only one name, ask the seller to confirm whether the registration documents identify the bike as an XG500 and to provide enough details to match the listing to the actual motorcycle. The XG500 designation helps narrow a search, but it does not answer questions about model year, condition or regional equipment. Verify those for the candidate in front of you rather than assuming that every motorcycle sold as a Street 500 is configured identically.

Where to look—and what availability does not tell you

Check official certified-used inventory

Harley-Davidson Japan has an official certified-used channel through participating authorized dealers. Its program describes dealer checks against certification criteria, necessary servicing and a repair warranty. The inventory is dynamic: a search of the official listing surfaced no Street 500 example in Japan on October 9, 2026. That result is not proof that no Street 500 is available elsewhere in Japan; contact dealers and check current listings directly.

Ask the dealer to confirm in writing whether the individual motorcycle qualifies for the certified-used program, what work has been completed, and the warranty’s duration, coverage, exclusions and claim process. The program description does not establish one fixed warranty for every motorcycle, so do not assume a particular term or benefit from the program name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request the warranty terms for the specific bike, not just a general description of the program. Clarify what the dealer means by “repair warranty,” which dealer or service point handles a claim, and whether any conditions apply. The program’s description supports asking about these details; it does not establish a universal warranty duration or list of covered components. Keep the written answer with the sales documents so that the terms you compare are the terms offered for that motorcycle.

Search beyond one inventory page

Check Japanese dealer inventory and used-bike marketplaces using both model names. A listing is a lead, not verification: confirm the year, registration status, mileage and documents with the seller, then inspect the specific motorcycle. When no suitable bike is listed, ask dealers whether they can locate one or alert you to incoming stock; do not treat an empty search result as a market-wide availability finding.

Before arranging a visit, ask whether the motorcycle is still available and whether the advertised price is current. Request photos or details of the registration information, service records and any known damage if these are not already clear from the listing. This can help identify basic mismatches before you travel, but it does not replace seeing the frame number and documents or having the motorcycle inspected.

Inspect the motorcycle and its history

Arrange an in-person inspection or have an independent qualified motorcycle professional inspect the bike. The following checks help identify questions to resolve before purchase; they are not findings about any particular Street 500. If you cannot evaluate an item confidently, ask for a professional assessment rather than treating a brief viewing as a clean bill of health.

Condition checks to make in person

  • Start and running: If possible, observe a cold start and ask whether the seller has warmed the motorcycle beforehand. Note difficulty starting, unusual running, warning indicators or other symptoms, and have unexplained issues assessed.
  • Leaks and corrosion: Look for visible fluid leaks, corrosion and signs of neglected storage or maintenance. Ask the seller to explain any affected area and provide repair records where available.
  • Brakes, tires and steering: Check visible condition and ask about service or replacement history. Have wear, damage, operation and fitment assessed by someone qualified. Verify tire specifications for this bike’s year and market rather than assuming regional service information applies.
  • Electrical equipment: Check the lights, indicators, instruments, controls and other fitted electrical equipment. Ask about intermittent faults or modifications and whether the original parts are available.
  • Falls, damage and repairs: Look for signs of a fall, damage or frame repair. Ask directly about accidents and repairs, and compare the answer with visible condition and maintenance documentation.
  • Modifications: Ask what has been changed, by whom and when. Confirm that non-standard parts are suitable for this motorcycle and that the seller can explain their history.

Do not let a single reassuring sign settle a question that needs evidence. For example, an apparently tidy motorcycle does not establish that it has never been damaged, and a seller’s description does not verify a repair history. Where the seller’s answer, documents and visible condition differ, pause and ask for an explanation or a qualified inspection before proceeding.

Use records to test the seller’s account

Request available service and maintenance records, repair invoices and information about prior ownership or use. Compare dates and mileage across records with the current odometer reading and the seller’s description. Gaps do not by themselves prove a problem, but they leave aspects of the bike’s history unverified; factor that uncertainty into your decision and inspection.

Check the registration documents against the frame number and the advertised model and year. Resolve discrepancies before paying or signing transfer paperwork. A tidy appearance, a valid inspection certificate or a dealer’s certification label does not replace a condition assessment and a review of records.

Ask the seller to distinguish routine maintenance from repairs, and to identify work that remains due or has been recommended. Keep copies or photographs of the records you are permitted to review, and note which claims are supported by invoices or entries and which are only verbal. If mileage or dates cannot be reconciled, do not silently assume an explanation; ask the seller to clarify it and reflect the uncertainty in your evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the full purchase cost

Ask for a written, itemized out-the-door amount before agreeing to buy. Harley-Davidson Japan states that the cash prices displayed on its certified-used listings include consumption tax but exclude insurance, taxes other than consumption tax and miscellaneous expenses. The listing information does not establish which additional charges will apply to a particular Street 500 transaction.

Cost item What to establish before purchase
Motorcycle cash price Ask whether the quoted figure is the tax-inclusive cash-sale price and confirm it is for the exact bike you inspected.
Registration or ownership-transfer handling Ask whether the seller or dealer will handle the procedure, what paperwork is included and what handling charge, if any, applies.
Inspection-related work Separate work needed to make the bike ready or address condition issues from the purchase price; ask what work is included and what remains outstanding.
Insurance Confirm the compulsory liability insurance arrangement, coverage dates and cost. Ask separately about any optional coverage you may want.
Taxes and miscellaneous expenses Request each applicable item by name and amount rather than assuming the advertised price includes it.
Delivery and dealer fees Ask whether delivery is offered, what it costs, and which other dealer charges apply to this particular transaction.

Ask the seller to explain whether each line is mandatory for the transaction, optional, or tied to work you have agreed to purchase. The official listing’s exclusions are a reason to request an itemization, not evidence that every possible fee applies to every sale. If two sellers quote different totals, compare like with like: check whether the difference reflects delivery, transfer handling, inspection work, insurance or another clearly identified item.

No reliable current Japan-wide Street 500 price range is established here. Avoid using other Harley-Davidson models’ asking prices as a substitute. To judge a candidate, compare live listings for the same year, condition, mileage and registration status, then account for differences in records, inspection validity, warranty and included work.

There is no basis here for treating a single asking price as a fair-value benchmark. Build your own comparison from current Street 500/XG500 candidates that are as similar as possible, and record each candidate’s advertised cash price and written total separately. A lower cash price may not remain the lower-cost option if it requires additional work or carries different transfer, delivery or warranty terms.

Check transfer paperwork before you commit

A 500cc Street 500 is above the 250cc threshold used in the cited Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) registration guidance. The cited regional procedure for a motorcycle over 250cc changing ownership lists a transfer certificate from the former owner. MLIT also notes that requirements can vary by application, so confirm the current requirements with the transport bureau responsible for your area rather than assuming one regional checklist applies everywhere.

  1. Ask who will file the ownership change. If the seller or dealer will handle it, get the scope of service, required documents, timing and charges in writing. If you will file it, contact your local transport bureau for the current process.
  2. Confirm the seller can provide the documents. Ask specifically for the transfer certificate from the former owner identified in the cited procedure, along with the other documents your local bureau requires. Resolve missing or inconsistent paperwork before completing the sale.
  3. Match documents to the bike. Check the frame number and vehicle details against the motorcycle and the registration documents. Make sure the seller’s authority to transfer the motorcycle is clear.
  4. Keep a record of the transaction. Retain the sale documents and any written agreement about filing, costs, included work and delivery. If a dealer is managing the process, ask what proof you will receive when it is complete.

MLIT’s online one-stop service information is another route to check, but it does not remove the need to verify which procedure and documents apply to your application. Do not rely on a seller’s assurance alone when a required certificate is missing.

Make the paperwork part of your pre-payment checklist rather than an afterthought. A seller who cannot yet produce a document may have a reasonable explanation, but you still need to know when it will be available and who is responsible for obtaining it. Confirm that the written sale agreement reflects any promise to provide missing paperwork or complete the transfer, and do not assume that a dealer’s involvement automatically includes every filing or fee.

Verify inspection status and insurance before riding

Inspection certificate and maintenance evidence

Ask to see the vehicle inspection certificate and check its expiry date. Request the maintenance and repair records and review them separately from the certificate. MLIT’s renewal-inspection guidance lists the inspection certificate, maintenance records, applicable tax evidence and proof of compulsory liability insurance among the relevant documents. These are items in renewal-inspection guidance; confirm the precise requirements for your own application with the responsible authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A current inspection certificate is not an independent assessment of the motorcycle’s present mechanical condition. It does not answer whether the bike has undisclosed damage, modifications or a maintenance issue that matters to you. Review the records and arrange a suitable inspection before relying on the bike for regular use.

Ask whether the seller is including any inspection-related work in the quoted price, and whether any work remains outstanding. Keep that discussion separate from the question of certificate validity: a valid certificate and a documented maintenance history are different pieces of information. If the certificate is close to expiry, confirm what the seller will complete before sale and what responsibilities or costs will fall to you.

Compulsory liability insurance

MLIT states that compulsory automobile liability insurance (自賠責保険) is required for owners of automobiles and motorcycles and that operating without valid coverage is prohibited. Confirm the policy and its coverage dates before riding, including how coverage will be arranged if the motorcycle is changing hands. MLIT describes insurance sales through providers and agents, dealers and repair shops; verify current policy terms with the provider or seller handling the arrangement.

Do not treat a seller’s statement that the motorcycle is insured as a substitute for confirming the actual coverage dates and arrangement for the change of ownership. Ask what documentation will show the cover and when it begins or ends. Make sure there is valid cover for the period when you intend to ride; if anything is unclear, check directly with the insurer, agent or dealer handling the policy.

Compulsory liability insurance is distinct from optional insurance. The available official guidance cited here establishes the compulsory requirement, not the terms or suitability of optional policies. If you want additional cover, compare current policy terms directly with insurers.

Compare candidates on evidence, not the badge

When several Street 500s are available, put each candidate through the same checks. A certified-used route may include dealer checks, servicing and a repair warranty under the program’s terms; the individual bike’s written warranty and condition still need review. A lower advertised price is not directly comparable until you account for transfer handling, inspection work, insurance, delivery and other applicable charges.

Comparison point What to compare Why it matters
Total on-road price Written itemized amount, including what is and is not included The displayed cash price can exclude insurance, taxes other than consumption tax and miscellaneous expenses.
Identity and configuration Year, registered model, frame number and market-specific parts “Street 500” and “XG500” searches may surface incomplete descriptions; verify the exact vehicle rather than assuming specifications.
History and condition Mileage, service records, repairs, accident or frame history, modifications and inspection findings These help distinguish documented maintenance from unverified seller statements.
Inspection and transfer Inspection expiry, required documents and who will complete the ownership change A bike that cannot be transferred cleanly or needs immediate work may not be the least costly option.
Warranty and support Written duration, scope, exclusions, servicing and claim arrangements Certification alone does not establish the coverage offered for a particular motorcycle.

For a side-by-side decision, write down what is confirmed, what is unclear and what would need additional spending for each motorcycle. Give more weight to verifiable details—matching documents, records, a clear written estimate and warranty terms—than to a seller’s broad assurances. If one candidate has less complete documentation, that is a comparison point to investigate, not proof that it is mechanically worse.

A practical purchase sequence

  1. Search by both names. Find candidates under “Street 500” and “XG500,” including dealer and used-bike marketplace listings.
  2. Screen sellers before visiting. Request the year, frame number, mileage, registration status, asking price, records, modification and repair history, transfer documents and a written estimate of additional costs.
  3. Inspect the exact bike. Compare documents with the motorcycle, review its condition and records, and arrange an independent qualified inspection if needed.
  4. Resolve the administrative details. Confirm the applicable ownership-change process with your local transport bureau, identify who will file it, and ensure the seller can supply the required documents.
  5. Compare written totals and terms. Review the itemized price, included work, delivery, insurance arrangement and any bike-specific warranty before agreeing.
  6. Complete the transfer and prepare to ride. Confirm the ownership paperwork is handled as agreed, check the inspection certificate and arrange valid compulsory insurance with coverage dates confirmed before riding.

Keep a copy of the final itemized quote and the seller’s written answers alongside the transaction documents. That gives you a practical record of the price, included work, transfer responsibilities, delivery and any warranty terms you agreed to, rather than relying on recollection after the sale.

Where can I find a used Street 500 in Japan?

Search Japanese dealer inventories and used-bike marketplaces using both “Street 500” and “XG500.” Harley-Davidson Japan also has a certified-used channel through participating authorized dealers, but its inventory is dynamic. A search of the official listing on October 9, 2026, surfaced no Street 500 example; that does not establish nationwide unavailability.

How much does a used Harley-Davidson Street 500 cost in Japan?

No reliable current Japan-wide Street 500 price range is established here. Compare current listings for similar year, condition, mileage and registration status, and request a written itemized total. Harley-Davidson Japan says its certified-used cash prices include consumption tax but exclude insurance, other taxes and miscellaneous expenses.

What paperwork should I check when buying a 500cc motorcycle?

The cited MLIT regional ownership-change procedure for motorcycles over 250cc lists a transfer certificate from the former owner. Requirements can vary by application, so confirm the current checklist with the transport bureau responsible for your area and check that the seller can provide the required documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I ride the motorcycle if it has an inspection certificate?

A valid inspection certificate does not replace an assessment of present mechanical condition or establish that the bike’s history is complete. Check the certificate’s expiry date, review maintenance records and inspect the motorcycle. Confirm valid compulsory liability insurance coverage dates before riding; MLIT says riding without required valid cover is prohibited.

Does Harley-Davidson certified-used status guarantee a particular warranty?

The program describes dealer certification checks, necessary service and a repair warranty through participating authorized dealers, but the general description does not establish one fixed duration or coverage for every bike. Get the specific motorcycle’s warranty scope, duration, exclusions and claim process in writing.

Can I use an India-market tire specification to choose parts for a Japanese Street 500?

Not without verifying fitment. Harley-Davidson service material gives an India-only 17-inch-front MRF Zapper detail, which should not be treated as the specification for every Japanese Street 500. Confirm the year and regional configuration using the motorcycle’s documents and qualified parts or service information.

The Bottom Line

Buy on verified details, not the listing headline: match the XG500 and frame number to the documents, inspect the specific bike and its records, and obtain a written total with fees and included work itemized. Confirm the local transfer requirements, inspection status, bike-specific warranty terms and valid compulsory insurance before riding.
