To arrange specialist insurance for a rare or modified sports car, give insurers or a specialist broker a complete account of the car as it stands, check how the policy will value it, and compare the actual cover terms—not just the premiums. Prepare a modification and evidence file before requesting quotes, confirm any DVLA requirements for structural changes, and get material answers in writing. This is UK-oriented guidance; eligibility and policy conditions depend on the car, driver and insurer.
Start with a complete, accurate vehicle file
Insurance decisions depend on the particular car and how you intend to use it. Before requesting quotes, assemble the facts in one place so that each insurer receives the same, complete description. Do not omit a change because it seems minor, was installed years ago, or was carried out by a previous owner. Ask the insurer how it treats each item.

Record the car and its use
- Identity: make, model, year, registration number and VIN. Note whether it is imported, and record its original and current specification where known.
- Condition and history: current mileage, condition, prior damage, repairs, restoration work and any write-off history. Include supporting records if available.
- How you will use it: intended annual mileage, commuting or business use, events or track use, and where it will normally be kept. Be precise rather than assuming a low-mileage or enthusiast policy includes every use you have in mind.
- Drivers: provide the requested details for every person who may drive it, including any relevant experience or restrictions the insurer asks about.
- Security and storage: describe where the car is kept and the security measures already in place. Do not promise to fit a device or meet a condition until you have checked what the insurer requires and when it must be in place.
Make a modification schedule
List each modification separately. For each one, note what changed, when it was fitted, who did the work, what parts or labour were involved, what it cost, and which invoices or records you have. Include changes to the engine, exhaust, suspension, brakes, wheels, bodywork, chassis, interior and electronics where applicable. Record restoration or repair work separately from performance or specification changes so an insurer can ask follow-up questions about the right item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPhotograph the car in its current condition, including clear images of significant changes and identifying details. Keep invoices, build records, parts information and prior appraisals together. If you do not know a date, cost or precise specification, say so; do not fill gaps with guesses. An insurer may ask for details, dates and values of modifications. A July 2024 non-standard private-car summary from Prestige Underwriting gives one example of a process that requests these details and says declared vehicle value should include modifications. That is an example of one underwriting approach, not a universal rule or a guarantee of current eligibility.

Including all changes is important even when you do not expect them to raise the car’s value. A modification can affect whether an insurer is willing to cover the risk, what conditions it sets, or how it assesses the car. Do not assume that a factory option, restoration detail or upgrade is irrelevant simply because it was fitted before you bought the car. If a detail is uncertain, flag the uncertainty and ask what further information the insurer needs.
Check whether the work has a DVLA requirement
Insurance disclosure and vehicle registration are separate questions. Do not assume every upgrade has the same legal status, or that notifying an insurer satisfies a DVLA requirement. The DVLA distinguishes repair or restoration from structural modification. Its INF318 guidance says structural modifications must be notified using the Modified Vehicle Statement form V627/3, and an MOT may be required. Its examples include changes to chassis or monocoque dimensions or appearance. The classification depends on the work, so check the current DVLA guidance for the specific changes made to your car.
DVLA guidance also advises: “It’s also advised that you contact your vehicle insurance provider to check whether the changes affect the motor insurance cover.” Tell the insurer about the changes even when you are unsure whether they count as structural; ask the DVLA separately if you need to establish the registration route.
Do not treat the word “modified” as one legal category. A change that matters to an insurer does not necessarily follow the same DVLA route as a structural alteration, and registration steps do not determine what the policy covers. Check the current guidance for the work actually done rather than relying on a general list or another owner’s experience. If you have several changes, consider each separately and keep any DVLA paperwork with the vehicle records.
Approach insurers or a specialist broker with the full picture
When you request a quote, state plainly whether the car is rare, imported, modified, classic or some combination of those descriptions. Send the complete modification schedule at the outset rather than waiting until an insurer has offered a price. A quote based on incomplete information may not reflect terms the insurer would offer once it knows the actual specification.
A specialist broker can approach insurers on a customer’s behalf and negotiate terms for a bespoke insurance contract; the FCA Handbook recognises this intermediary role. A broker cannot guarantee that an insurer will accept the risk, that it has access to a particular market, or that it can obtain agreed-value cover. Ask which insurers are being approached, what information they need and whether any answer is subject to underwriting approval.
Use the same vehicle, driver and use details for every quote. Tell each provider if a detail changes during the process, and ask whether the quote is conditional on an inspection, appraisal, security device or further documents. Treat any insurer-specific acceptance rules as specific to that provider and quote, not as a general rule for specialist policies.

A practical sequence is to prepare the file first, then contact insurers or a specialist modified-car insurance broker with the schedule and intended use. Ask what documents each provider needs and whether it has received the complete list of changes. If a provider wants clarification, answer against the relevant entry in your schedule and retain the response. This makes it easier to compare offers on the same facts rather than comparing a quote based on one description with a different quote based on another.
An insurer may use its own route for reviewing modifications. The July 2024 Prestige Underwriting summary, for example, describes modifications submitted through its portal and asks for details including dates and values. It also says the declared vehicle value should include modifications. This is a dated example, not a statement of current terms across the market. Check the live process and eligibility requirements with the provider handling your car.
Establish what the policy will pay before choosing it
A value typed into an application is not necessarily the amount payable after a claim. The Financial Ombudsman distinguishes an application estimate from an agreed-value arrangement. Under agreed-value cover, the insurer and policyholder agree a value in advance, and the policy pays that previously agreed amount following a total loss, subject to the policy terms. Check that the agreed amount is actually recorded on the policy schedule and understand any conditions attached to it.
Ask whether a quote is based on market value or agreed value. Then read the wording and schedule to see how the insurer defines the settlement basis, what evidence it relies on, and what happens if the car is stolen, damaged but repairable, or declared a total loss. Do not treat a verbal indication, a preliminary quote, or a figure in a quote form as confirmation of agreed-value cover.

|---|---|---|
| Market value | How the policy defines market value and what evidence the insurer uses when settling a claim. | The amount paid is determined under the policy and claim assessment; a figure entered during an application does not, by itself, fix the settlement. |
| Agreed value | Whether the agreed amount is shown on the schedule, what evidence was accepted, and whether an appraisal or review is required at renewal. | The Financial Ombudsman describes agreed-value cover as paying the previously agreed amount after a write-off, subject to the policy. |
Also ask how the insurer treats rare specification, provenance, condition, accessories and modifications in its valuation. Confirm whether there are limits or exclusions relating to mileage, restoration, events, track use or storage. Answers must be checked against the actual policy wording; there is no single settlement rule that applies to every specialist policy.
Clarify the distinction between a valuation used to calculate a premium and the settlement basis used for a claim. A declared figure can be an input to underwriting without being a guaranteed payout. For agreed value, check the document that records the agreement and whether it remains valid for the full policy period. Ask what happens if the insurer needs an appraisal or updated evidence at renewal, and note any deadline for supplying it.
Consider different claim scenarios in your questions. For repairable damage, establish how the insurer assesses repairs and whether you can use a specialist repairer. In a theft or total-loss claim, confirm whether the settlement follows market value or the agreed figure, and read any applicable conditions. For rare vehicles, parts availability and specialist repair arrangements may matter as much as the headline valuation, so ask about both before buying.

Build evidence for the value you are asking to insure
A persuasive value case is about the car’s present market position and the policy’s valuation process, not simply the total spent on parts and labour. The Ombudsman notes that modifications such as spoilers or racing exhausts may appeal to one buyer and deter another. Consequently, modification expenditure does not automatically increase market value by the same amount.

- Current photographs: clear views of the whole car, condition and distinctive specification. Make sure they represent the car being insured now.
- Ownership and build records: invoices, work descriptions, parts details and records of restoration or maintenance that help establish what the car is and how it reached its current condition.
- Specialist valuation evidence: obtain an appraisal if the insurer asks for one, and check who is qualified to provide it, what it must cover and how recent it needs to be.
- Comparable sales: look for genuinely similar cars, taking account of model and rarity, specification, condition, mileage and provenance. A broad comparison with a different trim or condition can be misleading.
- Purchase information: retain the purchase record. A recent transaction may be relevant, but it does not alone settle the correct insurance value.
Ask the insurer what evidence it accepts before paying for an appraisal or assembling extensive comparables. The Ombudsman says it considers specialist motor valuation guides and other evidence. The FCA’s review of firms found that those examined used retail transacted values from one or more trade guides; it also describes the Ombudsman’s use of multiple guides and good practice that allows customers to submit additional valuation information. This background is useful if a claims valuation appears unsupported, but it does not guarantee a particular claim outcome.
For a rare or unusually specified car, explain why the examples you submit are comparable rather than simply collecting the highest asking prices. Note differences in model, specification, condition, mileage and provenance, and identify whether your evidence is a completed sale or an advertised price. If an appraisal is required, ask in advance whether the insurer specifies who may prepare it and what details must appear. That avoids paying for a document that does not meet the provider’s requirements.
Keep a copy of what you submit and when. If a quote or later claim assessment uses a different valuation basis than you expected, you can refer to the schedule, the evidence supplied and the insurer’s written explanation. The FCA describes good practice that lets customers submit additional valuation information. This is a reason to preserve relevant documents and raise questions about unexplained deductions, not a promise that any one document or guide will dictate the outcome.
Compare the policy terms, not just the quote
Put each available offer side by side using the schedule and policy wording. A low premium is not useful if the policy does not cover the car’s actual modifications or intended use. The following checklist helps expose differences before you buy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Compare | Questions to answer from the quote and wording |
|---|---|
| Valuation and total loss | Is settlement on market value or agreed value? If agreed, is the figure on the schedule? What happens after theft or a total loss, and what evidence or renewal review applies? |
| Modifications | Are all disclosed changes accepted? Are parts and labour covered, and are any categories limited or excluded? How must later modifications be notified? |
| Permitted use | Are your mileage, commuting, business use, events and track use covered? Are there age, driver or geographic restrictions relevant to your circumstances? |
| Security and excess | Are an alarm, immobiliser or tracker required? By what date, and under what conditions? What excess applies to different claims? |
| Repairs and parts | Can you use a specialist repairer? How does the insurer handle scarce or hard-to-source parts, and does it impose repair or parts conditions? |
| Salvage and claims | What does the wording say about salvage after a total loss? What is the claims process, and how can you dispute a valuation or make a complaint? |
| Price and service | Compare the total premium, fees, payment terms and service only after confirming the cover suits the car. |
Security conditions are insurer-specific. For example, the July 2024 Prestige Underwriting summary named immobiliser and tracker requirements at certain vehicle values and for specified risk groups. Those thresholds should not be applied to other insurers or treated as current terms for a particular car. Check the live quote and policy documents for the actual requirements that apply to you.
Use the comparison to identify trade-offs, not just to choose the cheapest option. One policy may offer the valuation basis you need but restrict use; another may accept the intended use but impose a different excess or security condition. Check whether the total premium includes any fees, how payment terms work, and whether a condition must be met before cover starts. A tracker requirement, for example, is meaningful only in the context of the exact policy condition and deadline; do not assume a device you already have will satisfy it without confirmation.

Ask specifically about modifications made after the policy begins. Find out how to notify the insurer, whether work must be declared before installation, and whether parts and labour are covered if the car is subsequently damaged or stolen. Do not assume that acceptance of the vehicle’s present specification automatically covers future changes. Similarly, ask whether any event, track or restoration activity falls outside permitted use rather than relying on a broad label such as “enthusiast cover.”

Before paying, check that the schedule identifies the correct car and valuation basis, and that the insurer has received and accepted the modification information. Resolve any mismatch between your application, quote, schedule and policy wording. Ask for written confirmation of answers that materially affect cover, such as whether a specific modification is accepted, whether event use is covered, or what security condition must be met.

A simple record of questions and answers can prevent avoidable confusion. For each provider, note the date you spoke, the person or team, the vehicle description supplied and any documents requested. Save written replies alongside the final schedule. If the policy documents do not reflect an important answer, ask for the discrepancy to be corrected before relying on it.
At renewal, check the details again rather than assuming the previous year’s valuation, security conditions or modification acceptance carries forward unchanged. Report alterations to the car and changes in use, and ask whether fresh photographs, evidence or an appraisal are required. Keep the new schedule with the earlier records so you can see what has changed.
If a quote or claim does not match your expectations
If a provider declines the car or excludes a modification, ask which feature led to that decision and whether a different use pattern, evidence or security arrangement would change the terms. Do not hide the feature or describe it inaccurately to secure a quote. If the offered valuation seems low, ask how it was reached and submit relevant records, a specialist appraisal or comparable-sale evidence through the insurer’s stated process.

When reviewing an offer, separate a disagreement about the car’s value from a disagreement about what the policy promises to pay. Ask the insurer to explain its reasoning in writing and identify the wording it has applied. If you believe relevant evidence was overlooked, submit it through the stated process and keep copies of the exchange. A claim outcome depends on the policy and the circumstances, so neither an original estimate nor your total restoration or modification spend alone settles the question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to tell my insurer about every modification?
Give the insurer a complete account of the car as it stands, including changes made by a previous owner and work done years ago. List each change and ask how it affects eligibility, cover and valuation; do not decide for yourself that an upgrade is too minor to disclose.
How do I insure a modified car for its agreed value?
Ask explicitly whether the policy offers agreed-value cover, what evidence is needed and whether an appraisal or renewal review applies. Confirm that the agreed figure is recorded on the policy schedule. A value entered in an application or quote form is not necessarily the amount payable after a claim.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What evidence do I need to insure a rare car?
Prepare current photographs, ownership and build records, invoices, any specialist appraisal the insurer requires, and comparable sales for genuinely similar cars. A recent purchase price can be relevant but does not alone establish the insurance value. Ask the insurer what evidence it accepts before paying for an appraisal.
Do modified cars need to be registered with the DVLA?
It depends on the work. DVLA guidance distinguishes repair or restoration from structural modification and says structural modifications must be notified using form V627/3; an MOT may be required. Check current DVLA guidance for the specific change, and contact the insurer separately about cover.
Does the amount I spent on modifications increase the car’s insured value by the same amount?
Not automatically. The Ombudsman notes that changes such as spoilers or racing exhausts may appeal to some buyers and deter others. Ask how the insurer values the car and support the figure with relevant records and evidence.
What should I compare when choosing specialist cover?
Compare the valuation basis, accepted modifications, permitted use and mileage, security conditions, excess, repair arrangements, parts sourcing, salvage and claims process, as well as total premium and fees. Check the schedule and wording for the actual offer rather than relying on a policy label or a verbal indication.
The Bottom Line
Prepare a complete vehicle and modification file, check DVLA requirements for structural work, and disclose the car accurately to insurers or a specialist broker. Before buying, confirm whether settlement is on market value or agreed value, verify any agreed figure on the schedule, and compare use, security, repair and claims terms in writing.
